Eagles Focus On Red Zone And Time Management In Morning Workout

The Eagles got in another workout this morning under some dark clouds which held the rain.  The Birds spent a lot of time working on the end of the half and end of the game situations. They were working on calling timeouts at the right time.

The horn went off on the first team offense one-time.  They worked on getting the punt and field goal goal teams in there with the clock ticking. They worked on the offense getting off the field in those situations.

You could see that they’re legs are tired and they’re laboring through the workouts.

Tired legs, live full go drills and unemotional workouts always equaled injuries in my recollection.  If I were Andy Reid, I would shut down the hitting now, because some guys are going full speed and others aren’t.  That’s a bad formula.

They went full go a few times on red zone drills.   The first-string offense was able to get in the end zone a couple of times, once on a screen and again on a running play up the middle.  Michael Vick scrambled in for a score in much the same way he did during the game

After practice tight end Brent Celek said he had no problem with Ernie Sims laying him out in the full go red zone drill.  He took a while to get up but said it’s just part of the game after practice.  I’ve heard some grumblings about Sims popping his offensive teammates at practice.

Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott straddled the fence a bit on Sims’ hit.  He said they want to learn how to protect each other but to also play aggressively.

Todd Herremans got in more reps which is a good thing.

Kevin Kolb connected with Jeremy Maclin on a couple of slant routes and he got it deep to DeSean Jackson on a deep pass.  He lets the deep throw go much more quickly than McNabb.

Some of the guys look like they’re mentally already on the Northeast Extension on their way back home.

Starting running back LeSean McCoy missed this morning’s practice due to a quad contusion.  Mike Bell was out with a calf injury as well, so Eldra Buckley had his time to shine.  He didn’t shine, he stunk the place up by dropping pass after pass.  You have to be a pass catcher if you’re going to play running back for Andy Reid.

I know it’s early but McCoy needs to show everybody that he can stay healthy if he’s the starter.  I also noticed that rookie Charles Scott is solely a fullback and likely on his way out of here.

On one play I saw young tight ends, Clay Harbor and Cornelius Ingram both line up on the line on a formation, which makes the inside guy ineligible.  They need to get aware enough, so that one of them backs off the line of scrimmage.

Good update G though it sounds like a reather sloppy morning session,
this is about the time in camp where some of the young players start hitting the proverbial “wall” which sometimes is more mentally exhausting than physica and assignments beging to get missed…
Could you give us your take on how some the LB’s are progressing and in particular Clayton,Cheney..
Do you think they have a good shot, also is Fokou getting any snaps at LB or strictly DE for I think he is on his way out too…
I was going thru notes on this Defense and think M Harris,M Fokou,R Sapp are on the outside looking in… I think they will keep Gaither and White for veteran back-ups and Special teams play
which leaves the door for a Clayton & Cheney to possibly make the 53 Roster (or at least one of them and the other to Practice Squad) thnx

i really do like andy reid i do and i could take or leave marty but with this much talent i have to point fingers at the coaching staff for the redzone probs yeah it was preseason and we were only there twice with the starters but those two trips to the redzone should have converted EASY….reid and marty really need to get there play calling alot better or david akers will be our top scorer AGAIN

i dont know if i should be the 1 saying this cause u guys will think whatvever but in all honesty i think thats when vick should really be used in the redzone
i know the fumble was tough but he seems to be a huge threat in that redzone

No doubt that Vick is a great threat in the Red-Zone and should be more explosive now that he has his playing legs back in football shape. I think VIck will see the field 10-12 plays a game this season and make a couple of big plays a game whether it’s running in for a TD, getting that first down and occasionally pulling up and passing to an open receiver down the field.. I wouldn’t mind seeing him handle a complete series in each half either..
Let Kolb watch and learn from the sidelines for a series each half while VIck does his thing with the offense which would be a nightmare for D/Coordinators to have to game plan for …

admit it G..you like Sims because he wears #50 lol

I like the reports that he is making hits in camp, too bad that the 1st team Defense only had 6 plays. I think the guy can be a real improvement this year, but need to see him in more of McDermott’s scheme.

Also, listening to you after the game on Friday I couldn’t stop laughing about the guy complaining about the length of the players hair. You handled him great.

PW, I can see them using Vick or McCoy in a wildcat formation in the redzone. Vick looks faster than last year and can put some pressure on the defense in those situations. McCoy ran the wildcat a great deal at Pittsburgh and I have heard that they have him doing it more at this camp. I didn’t like the way that Andy and Marty ran their attempts last year, hopefully they learned something and also Vick is back into football shape.

That being said, one thing that does concern me about Vick is his ball security, and his tendency for turnovers. It does the birds no good if he makes a great run but fumbles at the end.

Vick should be the Redzone QB. A Dual threat in there with speed and big targets is a nightmare for other teams. Even though he had the turnovers, he showed that he’s willing to check down to a RB. The INT was the result of him trying to make a play with his arm when he could have done it with his legs. So that’s progress. But in the redzone, you gotta put this guy in. He has a cannon to fit it in tight areas and the legs to scramble for TDs.

Scorp- If football truly were run as a 100% team game I wouldn’t disagree with the idea of 7 coming in inside the redzone with Cooper and (Ingram/Washington) at wide out and Celek and Harbor on the line. and then 10 lined up in the back field or something so that there was speed and size maxed out.

3-6 plays with that combo should end up in a-lot of scores

Ernie Sims might be heading towards the “Full Metal Jacket” scene where they beat the shit out that guy with the soap bars in gym socks..lol.

Sims needs to be pancaked by the rookie left tackle. I didn’t see this agressiveness in the preseason game. Do it to the opponents, not your teammates when it doesn’t count.

Yeah Big E I saw a real lack of effort out of sims in all 6 of the plays the D was in for! Come on dude the guy is just doing his thing. He has a chip on his shoulder and thats a good thing. Imagine you had played for the Lions the last couple years. You would be willing to fight satan himself to get a chance to play for this team.

Vick should be used in the red zone, it’s that simple.

If the guy wants to hit why isn’t he on special teams and if he is special teams coverage was poor. Hitting our starting tight end in the back with his helmet is a cheap shot even in practice. This guy is out of control.
