Could Jackson be ready for Opening Day?

If you watched the Eagles preseason game Friday night against the Cincinnati Bengals, you saw an offensive line that was pretty horrific. Not only was Kevin Kolb running for his life for much of his time on the field, but they couldn’t move anyone out of the middle for LeSean McCoy either.

It was bad. And part of the reason for that is having some backups in there. Specifically, the center position is a mess since Jamaal Jackson went down with a torn ACL against Denver last year. Nick Cole was bad and Mike McGlynn is relatively ineffective (although he is supposed to be a guard).

But there could be good news coming. Jackson was out there with the one’s today at the NovaCare Complex and he says he’s feeling pretty good.

Went real good,” Jackson said, per Rueben Frank of Phillyburbs.com. “Just going out there and actually having people run at you and blocking them, that was a big step for me. I was encouraged. Hopefully, I keep doing more and more and keep progressing.”

Is there any way you could do everyone a huge favor and be ready for Week 1?

“I’m optimistic about it,” he said. “I would bet on myself.”

What he wants and what is reality are two different things, but at least there is a slight possibility. Several months ago, I don’t think anyone would have thought that he wouldn’t miss a regular season game.

Although we need him, I hope he doesn’t rush it then suffer a set-back.

MaybE its just me but i though Mike McGlynn did a good job. Its that left guard that scares me. We need Todd . And i can do without that Peters. Dont get me started on him

Is it just me? Peters was voted to the Pro-bowl last year. Is the talent pool in the NFL that bad or was he reating on a good reputation from Buffalo? Compared to what we had for so long with Tra, I thought he had an erratic and completly average season. Am I missing something?

Melmilliones yes it’s just you. That entire o-line was terrible especially the interior including McGlynn.

greenfan, I think it’s a combination of both. There are that many dominate tackles in the NFC and his reputation combined with our team winning as much as we did helped him make the pro bowl. But he’s a turnstyle. He’s built to run block and not drop back and pass block every down. In Buffalo, he played in an offense where he run block most of the times and he’s good at that. But pass blocking just isn’t his best strength. He’s always early off the line which shows his apprehensiveness to get back before someone blows by him.

LT in the NFC last year was very shaky and had a down year..
Cowboy F Adams was too old, Bears O Pace was too old,
Panthers LT J Gross was injured and missed half the year
Redskins LT C Sammuels was injured early and missed most of the season
Seahawks perennial Pro-Bowler W Jones retired before the season started..
Giants LT D Diehl was also injured and did not play that well so it was not a very deep, talented group
for the 2009 season at LT

For the 2011 Season the following will be battling for All_Pro Status at LT in the NFC
#1) 49ers J Staley – the best young LT in the NFC on and up and coming playoff team
#2) Saints J Bushrod – young and improving and on a Top Team with the Top QB in D Brees
#3) Falcons S Baker – another younger player on a solid playoff team who protects M Ryan
#4) Panthers – J Gross – a solid LT on a very strong running team, but offense is limited w/unproven QB and a lack of a passing attack who will struggle to be a .500 team
#5) Eagles – J Peters, has the ability and potentially will be a very potent offense who should be in the Palyoff hunt

I would say 49ers J Staley

Greenfan – I think you’re also putting way too much stock in the pro bowl. It’s pretty bad in terms of measuring the best at any position. It’s a joke. Peters is what he is. Hopefully he’ll play better this year now that he’s more familiar with the team and the quicker releases from Kolb hopefully help him too. But that cincy preseason game was all about the new ref position behind the OLine and them overcalling (or now it’s the norm?) line stuff. It’s either going to be a little more lax during the regular season, or there’s going to be TONS of OL penalties throughout the league on a regular basis. Soon the ref will be a DL’s best player. I’m not saying Peters and Justice are hall of famers, I’m saying there was something else going on during that PRESEASON game at play….
