I don’t think the Eagles are overjoyed about Bengals free agent wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh but I think they’re going to put some big money on the table for him.
I think they’ll make sure it’s made public that they made a play for Houshmandzadeh but I doubt that they do all it takes to bring him in, if other teams jump in the chase.
I know the Birds like their wide receivers and think DeSean Jackson will get better, so they’re not thrilled about investing much more in that position.
I think the public push by Donovan McNabb for the Eagles to add weapons, will help provide the Eagles the motivation to make a move and leak it out, if they don’t get him.
He’s no where near the talented receiver that you saw in the previous big name wide receiver the Eagles brought into town, Terrell Owens. Still, Houshmandzadeh is clearly the best of the group of free agent receivers currently on the market.
He isn’t a big receiver like the Birds covet. He’s listed at 6’1” and weighing only 200 pounds. I heard that he’s more like 6’ even, which isn’t the size of the big receiver the Eagles really want to acquire, but I think the Birds have no choice but to go after him.
Houshmandzadeh caught 92 passes last season for a total of 904 yards, so he would be a good fit in the west coast offense. He’s great at finding seams in the zones and he catches everything near him.
I think the pursuit will be more than a public relations campaign because the bidding for the Cincinnati wide out is going to get ridiculously high.
Would the Eagles rather have Anquan Boldin? Yes, a thousand times yes, but the Cardinals may refuse to trade him and the guy has two years remaining on his contract.
They’ve got to make a run for Houshmandzadeh, but I don’t know that they’re going to be willing to go far enough.
