During this past off season I heard people comparing Eagles new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb to Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. After six quarters of preseason action, I’ve heard his detractors comparing him to Bobby Hoying. It’s way too early to give the thumbs up or thumbs down on Kolb.
It’s too early to say he’s the greatest after a couple of games and it’s too early to say he’s a bust.
The regular season hasn’t started and therefore the Eagles haven’t lost a single game. Kolb hasn’t thrown one pass that counts, yet many have already made a judgement on the youngster. I thought all of the praise he received during the off season was unwarranted and I think the criticism coming his way now is over the top.
I didn’t think it was wise of Eagles football people to be talking about how Kolb was going to do things better than Donovan McNabb. They have made this situation tougher for Kolb. Why not lower expectations and let him out perform them. There was no reason to say what he was going to do, all they had to do was wait and let him do it. Everybody’s going to see what he does.
In fairness though, we’ve all got to give Kolb some tine before we can claim that he’s great or he’s a bust.
Yesterday was the first time the Eagles offensive coodinator Marty Mornhinweg had to stand up and defend the play of his new signal caller. Mornhinweg was very clear about his faith in Kolb.
“Yeah, [I have] great confidence in Kevin Kolb”, Mornhinweg told the media yesterday. “Look, he missed a few things and he’s done those things before just perfectly. I have to go back and evaluate myself. I think he was thinking a little too much. He knows some of those plays inside and out, and then all of a sudden, he missed a couple. That’s my responsibility, as well, and we did that that week.”
After the practice yesterday, Kolb and the Eagles quarterbacks stayed out and worked on their fundamentals which had been lacking on Friday night. Kolb said he wants to get back to fundamentals this week.
After looking at that the tape of the game Kolb pointed the finger at himself as the main reason the offense was struggling. “It wasn’t very good by me,” Kolb said yesterday. “As a unit, we have to get better. Like always, it starts with me,” Kolb said. “But I’m glad it’s preseason. We’re 0-0 now and it’s time to move onto Green Bay.”
Kolb didn’t think he threw the interception in the third quarter because he was frustrated. The youngster said, “I just felt I was trying to do too much when things weren’t going our way.”
Kolb says he and the rest of the first team offense would like to play this week to get that bad taste out of their mouths, but he’s willing to sit out Thursday game because he’s confident Andy Reid knows what they’re doing. Plus Kolb said, “it’s been like for a long time, at least as long as I’ve been here.
Mornhinweg is convinced Kolb will make the corrections and be ready to play much better when the season starts against Green Bay. “Our mistakes were well-accounted at every position. I’m not going to get into details now. We’ve got great confidence in Kevin Kolb, no question about it. Some of those things he missed, he’s done in the past, he’s done beautifully. I don’t have any hesitation on that.”
To judge Kolb before he gets at least 10 games under his belt and really even the entire season is
just unrealistic.. Too many fans are impatitient and expect great things from every new player right away which doesn’t happen in the SPorts world or the real world wither.. Let Kolb work hord and prepare every week as the Starter, let him go through the growing and learning phase and the players around him need to rally around and step up their games too (including the coaches) Kolb is going to do some things not as well as McNabb did and he also is going to do some things better than McNAbb did, so there is going to be an adjustments made by the O/L, the WR’s and yes, the Play-Calling by the Coaches to take advantage of what he does well which is what good Coaches are paid to do..
well if jemarcus russell was our qb u think marty would come out and say “well jemarcus stinks”
marty is an employee he gotta say that
i agree its to early the book is still out but that happy ending every1 just assumed surely aint guranteed
and comparisons to d5 gotta stop like compare him to chad pennington or kerry collins or something 1st
to me he is ely manning in the flesh all over again fade away no look jump passes and all looks just like him only thing missing is plax
if u like ely then he’s our guy
i hat ethe gmen just as much as the next guy, but eli (which is hows it spelled PW) has a super bowl ring and an MVP to his name.. Mcnabb is on the bench and possibly missing the opener due to an injury, which has been a huge knock on him for his whole career.
PW, why do you even waste your time posting if all you do is bitch and complain, you and songs sound like 10 year girls. Post something worth reading that incorporates some thought, all i am reading now is some guy/girl (don’t want to offend you if you are a female) butchering the English language and crying at his/her computer.
Good point G. We should wait until the end of the season before we can take a look in retrospect on Kolb’s first year at the helm. He has the potential to be a good QB, he doesn’t even have to be “great”. I wouldn’t think Eli Manning as a “great” QB however he was able to rally a team and win a SB. I don’t know what’s going to happen this year but I expect it to not be easy. We have a tough schedule, a young team all around with tons of new faces and several skill positions. No ones going to hand us a Division crown, playoff berth, or a SB trophy because we might look good on paper. But I know we’ll fight to win every game we can and I’ll support this team 100%. GO BIRDS!
ely or eli has a sb trent dilfer has a sb, jim plunkett a sb, jeff hostetler a sb, brad johnson a sb and so did bum joe namath ( 173 td’s 220 int’s 65.5 qb rating for career) thats right i said it bum joe namath
while guys like dan fouts, jim kelly, fran tarkenton, warren moon, dan marino and d5 havent so what.
ely eli has luckiest chip known to man
i hope kolb is that lucky
hey i dont care if my opinions get on your nerves they should the truth hurts
P.W. is there anythign about the squad that you like and arepositive about? Do you want them too do well? Your stating that your opinions posted are the truth. Truth too you right? I mean how much of an a$$face can you sound like and not realize this is a oppurtunity for all of us Birdbrains too kick the sh!t about our squad. Paulman professes and comes up with trade alerts but he knows its not fact and he CAN be wrong. Get someone too help you form full sentences that dont jump from one topic too another without punctuation.
And have some goddamn faith will ya toolbox!!!! Kolb can play,it’s obvious by the way he moves on the field, the throws he makes look easy, and football “experts” do seem to have some faith in him. So your gonna be a BIG F#CKN BABY about past losses,back-ups playing for us,and yack yack .
Ride with your soldiers or get ripped like the crybaby you come across as and get no respect from not only here but from those around you when the season kicks off. ITS FOOTBALL!!GO BIRDS!!
2 games is all we need to know if this QB can cut it…..
If we’re 0-2…. I could care less about the development of Kolb. He was groomed for 4 years so he’s not a rookie.
We were told he was not only ready but the offense would run better with Kolb at the Helm. This is what was sold to the Philadelphia fans and the media so everyone could feel fine with the subtraction of a franchise quarterback.
No Excuses…Stick to your GUNS.
We are not rebuilding …therefore results must happen immediately and we can expect a better team starting out this year than what we’ve experienced with our former team. We had a draft and Free Agency to improve on top of a more accurate quarterback built for the West coast offense.
Don’t start retracting now “G”
We’ll know in the first 2 games and if Kolb is running scared there’s no use in the fans expecting a fierce competitor when the temperture drops below “0”. TWe don’t need 10 games and a wasted season to determine if this guy can cut it as a pro..
2 FREAKIN GAMES!
“TIMES YOURS
Songs, do you not get it that any QB – from the best down to Ryan Leaf’s grandma, needs time in the pocket in a real game for a long time – a lot of it. You may not understand it, but the vast majority of football fans, players, and coaches know that. If you didn’t, now you do. If you did but ignored it because you’re unreasonable and impatient, well that’s not surprising. You love saying ‘no excuses’ – wow, we’re all impressed tough guy. But we live in the real world. I’d love to be able to fly, and make a million dollars an hour, and sleep with every woman I wanted and rule the world. No excuses – I should get that done. or is that utterly ridiculous and unreasonable? No excuses. no excuses. You’re a tool and you know it. Well I say, you’ve had plenty of time to clean up your act and get yourself together. You’re ready, no excuses – stop being a turd and come back to reality – QBs need playing time, which Kolb has seen very little of, and he’s about to get a season – plus – to develop and play good football in the meantime. Man up and except the real world or stay miserable, frankly, none of us care either way about you and your infantile needs and desires.
2 games is the test for a 1st year Starter…
Ok this would knock out T Aikman, P Manning, D Brees, A Rodgers, D McNabb, P Simms,J Montana, J Elway, T Bradshaw and almost every QB that has ever played on a team that struggled during their 1st Season as a Starter…
For today’s teams and players, you mean a QB like Detroit Lions M Stafford or the Tampa Bay Bucs J Freeman are busts and should be replaced because their teams stunk last season….
.. You guys are just being stupid…
erock be happy this is a message board u talk to much id personally shut u the f up
willpen24 at yahoo dot com
u can say what u want there
what f’ing experts u talking bout didinger says he is a work in progress
all ur football analyst ex football players scratch that not all most of them on espn football network or what have u disagree with the move but that doesnt matter im just countering ur dumb ass experts point what experts baldinger lol Joe Banner (bill gates) jeff lurie
u can be a fan all u want im not trying to discourage u and if it is y read my opinion but i state the truth not some o im a eagles fan we r the best bs not some i saw a look in his eye i know he’s great bs
hey u guys read the post everyday
u come on GCOBB everday
so u read and by what u have read does the man that u guys listen too or read everyday favor this move
im not gonna say he dont like kolb but would g have traded d5 to start kevin kolb yall know the ans 2 that
now i know g will come out with a post to debunk what i just said but yall read this every day u act like im makin some s up
so back 2 sb or bust i dont wanna hear this rebuilding or kolb’s gotta learn bs
Try Aikman was a rookie and he showed he could play even when the team around him was miserable..Brees proved he could play in every opportunity he was given. Aaron Roger showed he could play and was great even in preseason when the reigns were turned over to him. Mcnabb was a rookie and showed more as rookie than this guy Kolb have shown in 4 years if you include the preseason.
If Kolb is a total bust then what?
Phillywill…how lucky am i toolshed?Get the f outta here talking about that stuff. You would shut me up? Really? This is a message board and i talk too much? Sure man.
Shiller…infantile needs and desires.Dang son…classic.
And are you giving me your email address? Seriously, your moving too fast for me.
Watch how fast these optimist jump off the Kolb wagon and get missing in action when he throws a few pick 6’s and stink up the joint.
By mid season they’ll be talking about what a great crop of QB’s coming out with next years draft.
Philadelphia Eagles fans are pathetic…We relish in mediocrity and accept any spin the organization feed our miserable fan base.
Get use to it….The Cowboys cock roaches were right…We’ll never see a Superbowl in Philly because the owners are always a day late and a dollor short,… and the fans accepts it.
We were told how Kolb would immediately improve the offense with the young guns and now everyone is retracting after seeing this bum become the 1st QB in eagles history to play preseason without a touchdown…He’s regressed and no one wants to admit it.
Now it’s….”give him time” He had 4 years to be ready for the opportunity.
If he needed time we should have kept “D5” until he was ready….We don’t need time!!!
WE NEED A FREAKIN SUPERBOWL!!!!
times yours
im not a cornball i will state my opinion not call people names what have u
i dont like anything schill has to say but i dont personally attack him
we talk football
thats what im saying
“We relish in mediocrity and accept any spin the organization feed our miserable fan base.”
i agree with this songs
part of it is naive the other is that we have the most passionate fans there r
we r down 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th most stadiums are empty not the bank we believe
the problem is we believe all the time
we r usually underdogs in any sport when going against a top team but that doesnt stop us
shoot u couldnt tell me we werent winning an nba finals in 2001 i joined the parade on broad street just like alot of other fans did that night after winning game 1
and then it usually slaps us in the face after we lose that we werent good enough
how could i think eric snow ai tryone hill george lynch and deke could win it all with that 5
but in 2001 if u were to tell me otherwise i would have went crazy
in a nut shell thats a philly fan for u
This really makes my day so much easier. Thanks fellahs.Go Birds.
I’d love to be able to fly, and make a million dollars an hour, and sleep with every woman I wanted and rule the world. Stop being a turd and come back to reality. Your just a putz.
hahahhahahaahah big e histerical
I’ve been saying all along that I couldn’t understand how anyone could predict what kind of QB Kolb would be. He simply has hasn’t played enough. Sure, he’s had a few cameos/starts, but not nearly enough playing time to evaluate.
Tom Brady shocked the world as a back-up and a few others had very good showings, but those are the exceptions, not the rule. Generally, it takes time to develop. With that said, however, I would be disappointed if Kolb’s development wasn’t accelerated because of his experience.
I also feel that Reid has once again set his QB up for failure. The offensive line is questionable, at the very minimum.
PW, so you’re a front runner? The Birds aren’t the SB favorites and you’ve been trashing them for 8 months now. So when Kolb gets in his groove and this offense begins to play well are you and songs going to jump back on the wagon? Being a Philly fan is believing in the team you root for not stand behind them when they are already in the finals.
What if Kolb comes out and does really well? It could happen despite all of the negativity he gets from a few posters here? Whould you then come out and say, “I was wrong, Kolb turned out to be pretty good after all?” I doubt it, some of you here will still feel the need to disect and dismantle for any small fault in his game. Someone mentioned he threw a “dirtball” so what…did he throw dirtballs on 3 constcutive plays on 2 consecutive series resulting in punts to the other team? Nope… I guess I look at the positive things in this team like even though we didn’t score and offensive passing TD until the Kafka to Cooper vs the Chiefs I still saw a team convert 3rd downs regardless of distance, sustained drives that ate up clock time and decent (not great but decent) ball management. This being the Vanillia Offense of the preseason I see some really good things out there and I can’t wait for the season to begin with the full Offense and entire playbook out on the field. I also see alot of mental errors like False starts and lining up wrong but that stuff can be fixed, I don’t see alot of illegal blocks in the back or Offensive holding or other “major 10+ yard penalties which tells me that these guys are getting more diciplined than last year.
I havent heard anyone called a putz in a while.Wasnt that something Fonzie would call someone? Classic BigE.The kid will do fine..he’s got weapons and the defense looks really stout. Run d looks much improved.Anyone else seeing a positive in the way the D seems too be dictating too the offense what they’ll be allowed too do. I think these young corners are gonna keep Ellison the top of his game. And with the way teams go 3-4 wide. We should see some picks from the nickle spot, batdowns. Laws is a plus…dude is getting after it daily. Like his drive after everyone pretty much wrote em off cause of the slacker attitude he showed early in his career. GIVE ME B-GRAHAM TAKEN DOWN RODGERS IN THE 1ST QRTR!!
nah im a players fan man i dont root for these front offices
we had ai watched every game from 20 – 62 days loved sixers my fav team of all time trade ai and bring in andre miller awful hated sixers
same here u trade d5 for this dude kolb lmao
at least andre miller already had a name for himself in the nba
i always been a players fan period
traded barkley hated sixers till we got ai
same here im sure when chase ryan and jimmy go i may feel someway bout the phils thats just life
im an eagle fan at heart but i hate this team so call me what u want but thats what it is
and btw i dont see kolb getting in this groove we dont play the chiefs this yr at the linc sorry
Erock-I can almose see it now, Packers run on first down and gain a yard, 2nd and 9, Rodgers steps back to pass and BIGRAHAM gets his first sack of his career.
defense looks great
we wont have smash mouth get a 3 and out down 7 with 2 min left d but we never did
we will have a very fast d swarm to the ball create to’s sacks just chaos
we will give up an occasional big play but on the whole i like this d to keep alot of teams out of the endzone
top 5 in takeaways top 5 in sacks top 5 in points allowed
I hope D/C McDermott has a plan on how to Cover Packer TE J Finley (and please don’t say OLB Jordan) This guy will be a thorn in the Eagles all day long and they need to stop him amd make him pay for coming across the middle
The Packers probably have the best WR corps in NFC with G Jennings, D Driver, J Jones and J Nelson, which will a great test versus this revamped Secondary.. Their RB’s are average and will put the ball on the Turf if you hit em enough, the key obviously to get to Rodgers early and often
and weatch for the Screen plays
If Kolb becomes Aaron Rogers..I would be the 1st to admit I was wrong, but I know that he have a better chance in becoming Bobby Hoying.
I’ve seen the look in his eyes this last pre season game and I don’t care what you all say.
He wasn’t acting as if it was just preseason…He’s concerned and so is the coaching staff.
Success breeds confidence and the lack of success this preseason is taking a toll. If Green Bay defense get to him early I believe this will get real ugly, especially if there’s no running game.
But, let’s hope i’m wrong and Andy and Ol’ Marty are playing rope a dope.
You know I’ll be the first one on Gcobb’s site after Game 1
Paulmans Ranking of best Wr corps in the NFC

cards will drop out of ur top whatever and that will leave cowboys 3rd
o really top 3 qbs have the top 3 wr corps
hilarious whatever
i’d like to see drew brees arron rodgers or romo with our wr corps and then let u rank them
A couple of updated around the NFL for players released or placed on IR
Giants place back-up QB J SOrgi and W S Moss on IR and will miss 2010 Season
TB Bucs released disapponting RB D Ward that Eagles were interested in 2 years back and would actually be a very good fit in this Eagle offense igf his head is on straight
TB Bucs starting CB A Talib has been suspended for Week #1 for anger managment/personal conduct issues ..(this gut is a Pro-Bowl type of player if he kept his head on straight too)
Seahawks LB L Hill agreed to a huge paycut from $6 Million to $2.25 in order to play this year..
(he’s had a slew of legal troubles off the field, marijuana, domestic violence, etc, etc,)
Cowboys has WR D Bryant return to opractice whiole WR R WIlliams injured his back and sat out and is listeed as a mior precautionary measure, back-up TE J Phillips has been placed on IR and is out for the Season
willis mcgahee is on trading block
i know his injury past and dont care
he is an upgrade over mike bell i am an upgrad over bell
CB A Talib is suspended for 1 game because of his 2009 arrest. Also the Redskins just placed Malcom Kelly on IR ending his season too.
Mgahee will be moved (my guess is the Oakland Raiders) who lost their best RB in M Bush with a broken bone on his hand… I th ink th Raiders will contend for a playoff spot in the AFC West this year
the Defensive Rookie of the Year is MLB R McClain wiithout a doubt.. (and the Giants wanted him so bad too and were going to trade up not thinking he would go that high.. the Best Raider draft pick in
years)
DE Sapp…gone for the year…
Kolb is thinking too much. We wouldn’t want that. I hope he doesn’t chew gum while he plays. Don’t put too much on his plate. Just keep throwing 70% of the time and let him run around without thinking about the play, but only protecting his body and running ffor his life..
I wish the Eagles would trade DT M Patterson while he still has a high value..Antonio Dixon/T Laws and Jeff Ownes can all rotate and I don’t think they would miss much with Patterson gone, lots of teams would like to have him adn I would like to see him traded for a good back-up TE to assist Celek who is going to have his career shortened by 2-3 years if he doesn’t get quality help ..
A team like Seattle who needs DT help and trade for back-up TE Chris Baker 6’3″ 265 lbs who can block, run and catch and a 3rd or 4th Rd Draft pick and remember that Patterson when to USC where Pete Carroll coached when he was in College…
WTF are you guys talking about here?
I’ll give him 2 games, maybe 3 if the first were less than or at just 1 touchdown. After that, sit his a– on the bench and put Vick in.
New nickname, One look Kolb, or Double Coverage. This guy kills me, only eyeballing ONE receiver, MOST OF THE TIME. He’s going to get someone KILLED. Come on Andy, get to work with this guy. Eagles: maybe 7 win this year. I HATE SAYING THAT, but get use to a lot of turn-overs this year.
we need logan mankins. It ALL starts up front and we have a VERY…VERY weak line right now. Peters and Andrews have not panned out….time to upgrade the line or live with 7-9.
7-9? are you kidding me?
This team will be blessed if they get 5 wins
I’m sorry…if you have DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy squeezing through hairline fracture size holes and Celek in the starting line-up IF the guy is a franchise QB there should have been a couple of BIG QB plays during the Pre-Season. I’ve seen decent WR play, decent RB play, decent TE play but the QB hasn’t done anything that looks beyond serviceable with stellar skill players around him and that’s a problem. Maybe if Maclin grabbed that long-ish pass instead of letting it drop between his hands I would think differently, but that still would have only been one play.
The same Red Zone issues have shown up, the same inability of the play to not immediately have at least one receiver open in a pattern is starting to reveal some things that many people have thought for the last 11 years, but I won’t get into that now. At this point Kolb is looking pretty average compared the the rest of the league and that’s a fair criticism. I’m personally tired of people saying that he needs a couple of 7-9, 8-8 or 9-7 years to get good enough to really be competitive. Every fan was told that Kolb would be getting rid of the ball faster which would make the team better PERIOD.
I thought Jackson would play 8 games, but with them throwing short to him as much as they are I don’t even know if that’s realistic. The only thing I can think of right now is the Eagles starting to straighten the ship out by drafting Jake Locker or Ryan Mallet after the season is over.
Butch, what about specific playcalling and game planning. You don’t think that those factors could make a big difference? I do. I’m just saying, you don’t hear anyone say – yeah, it was clear that (Insert the name of any successful QB) was going to really be a great QB in the first three preseason games before the season he started. No, you never freakin hear that because the preseason is meaningless. And if you’re not factoring the patchwork injured O Line into it too… I’m just saying, dismissing Kolb as not adequate after 3 starts in relief and 3 preseason games is nothing but foolish. G said it, along with anyone else who played or analyzes the game – QBs need at least a year as the starter to really develop and you just don’t know until they’ve been playing in the league for a while. You’re jumping to conclusions way too early. And as for them throwing short to Jackson in the preseason – THEY’RE NOT GAME PLANNING! So that means nothing about the calls they’ll do in the regular season. Kolb has looked bad so far in exactly 0 games this season. Preseason games are not real NFL games – not even close – don’t give me that ‘no excuses’ crap – if the team doesn’t plan against their opponent, doesn’t open up their playbook and just calls vanilla shi* to get through the game and evaluate the fundamentals of the youngsters…. you can’t draw conclusions about what will be in the regular season. There’s a reason that all the writers, coaches, ‘experts’ agree about that – because it’s true.
