Kevin Kolb Sought Advice From Aaron Rodgers Concerning Replacing A Star QB

There was a buzz up at the Eagles Nova Care complex today.  The season starts in four days and the players are starting to get that itch.  Nobody is getting the itch more than new Eagles starting quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Kolb says he’s been preparing for this moment for his entire life.   He was the son of a coach who trained him in hopes that one day he would be a starting quarterback for an NFL team.  The fourth year signal caller is making it a point to take his preparation one day at a time so he doesn’t get ahead of himself.

Kolb wanted to make sure he said and did the right thing as he prepared to take over for long-time Eagles starting quarterback Donovan McNabb.   He decided to seek some advice from somebody else who had been in a similar situation, so he reached out to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers during the off season and asked him about what the thought was the proper way to step in for a very successful franchise quarterback.

“The big thing I pull from him is how he handled everything”, Kolb told a mob of media members at his locker. “The whole picture, that’s with [QB] Brett [Favre] leaving, similar to me with Donovan, also, in my opinion, it’s taking over a good team, it’s not like young guys who come in and they’re doing a rebuilding thing, we both had good teams coming in to, so success is demanded right off the bat, and it’s no different here.”

Kolb let us know that the thing which impressed him most about the way Rodgers took over for Favre was his consistency.   Rodgers stepped on the field and put the pedal to the metal.

“Just how steady he is. Nobody ever questioned his confidence. They’ve always known he had the ability, but the way he has just shown solid confidence through the whole thing, not only is that solid for the fans and the media, and everybody looking from the outside, but it’s important for his own teammates. They never want to see their quarterback waver. So that’s something that I can pull from, and obvious.”

Kolb will get the chance to show Rodgers that he garnered a great deal from his advice by finding a way to lead the Eagles to a victory over the Packers.   Getting a win will probably mean Kolb finding a way to get the football into the end zone, because chances are that the high-powered Green Bay offense will be able to find a way to get there.

Who cares what he “pulled” from Rodgers. I know I don’t. He better learn to play like Rodgers. Forget the talk. Play ball. Yeah Kolb knows how to handle himself well in front the media. He needs to handle himself well on the field because that’s all that matters.

You hit it on the head Scorp. Who cares what he pulled from Rodgers; “play ball” and win some games. Aaron got thrown into the fire and is handling it. Kolb better do the same. No excuses. He’s right, he’s stepping in with a team with explosive weapons. No excuses buddy. Don’t start off you career with needing a shoulder to lean on with that “soft crap” mentor jive either. Screw the pack and every other team out there. Lets just win games and make it to the playoffs and more.

I’m not even worried about how Kolb will do. He will be fine. I’m more interested in how our defense will play this year.

Since we are a much better team this year only b/c of a single key position upgrade, does anyone wonder why we are not picked as superbowl contenders, let alone division champs? I mean we are so much better now that we have gotten rid of the main weakness of our team. The only weakness that has prevented us from reaching multiple superbowls. It was his fault, all of it. Arizona, Carolina, Dallas (omitting Tampa).

Where is everyone coming up the notion, that the 2009 Eagles were a legitimate Super Bowl Contending team. Yes, they finished the season 11-6 and made the playoffs but did not win one game versus a team with in winning record, In fact, in those 6 losses they were outscored 170-84 which is pretty bad and shows how far from they were and still are from being an “elite team”.
So let’s get off the “delusional train”, that by simply replacing the QB, that this 2010 team is ready to compete for a Super Bowl in 2010…

I’d advise you to peruse the many posts on this site and the eagles forum on philly.com. A sizable amount of “fans” identified the qb position as the primary weakness of the team. I don’t know where you’ve been, but many stated that if you change the qb, you’ve solved the problem. No problem, let’s see it. I’d be the first to congratulate if it’s the case. I just don’t like the revisionist history that’s rounding into an “excuse saftey net”.

I see fans are already talking about 2012-2013 as the year we will contend…these same fans are excited about this season knowing the Eagles will take steps backwards and there disdain for Mcnabb runs so deep that they would rather have less talent and losing seasons than except what he meant to the Eagles. I wonder why?..Some claim it’s because he couldn’t win the “big one”…This organization lead by Reid and LLurie, and Banner’s wallet could not win the big one. Don’t make excuses for them yet say that’s the reason the one bright spot of the team had to go.

Just be an Eagles fan,..Dream for 2012-2013

it doesn’t matter what a guy on Fox said, i guarantee anyone of us can throw together a slew of predictions that are more accurate and have a more substantial basis than some schmuck form Fox. Remember last year when everyone said the Panthers were going to be awesome and it was a clean split on ‘experts’ picking the winner…Its a shot in the dark, enough with the predictions b/c truthfully not one person on here knows sh*t about the future. if so, whats the next big bubble and we will pool our cash and buy this team.

disdain?? no one on her hated McNabb, many people realize his time, which was very good at times, has passed us. he isn’t who he once was and is on the decline for his career and that is a fact.

Just about every QB in the league talks to eachother. It’s like they have their own QB Fraturnity (sic). Kolb still talks to McNabb alot and I’m not surprised that Kolb reached out to Rodgers becuase he’s the only other QB that I see that mirrors the way Kolb is starting out.

SONGS, so how much less talent do we have? You don’t know how Kolb will turn out, you can only speculate based on what you think as a biased McNabb fan, it wouldn’t matter if we had Bradford starting this year, or Flacco or any other QB we could’ve drafted because they’re not McNabb and all these “losing seasons” we’ll have..I believe you as well as many others on here would’ve been fine with “like 1 SB and 9 losing seasons”.

We’re all (mostly) greatful for the service and dedication that 5 brought to the Eagles, but he’s gone now. Not my decision, not yours or anyone elses. The Eagles drafted Kolb for a reason, we’re going to find out how good he really is this year, he could sink or he could swim I don’t know anymore than anyone else here. I’ll be cheering come Sunday regardless..I got some Kool-Aid to drink…I’ll be back.

To ColdBrew
Maybe my opinion differs from most on here because I pay attention and follow the entire NFL and do not make my opinions thru “Eagles-Colored Glasses” from the Organization, local media,talk-radio like many of the fans do..I stated on others posts, that since 2005 season, the Eagles are 44-35-1 overall which is a .550 winning % which is above average but is nothing special and definietly not a Championship level.. If you all want to point the the Front Office making comments that we are the Gold Standard or have the “Best Roster of the NFL” and think it’s really true, then I have some swamp land to sell in South Jersey… Follow the records, follow other teams and the league and you will come to the conclusion that the Eagles are simply just a slightly better than average team.. I don’t see that changing a whole lot while Coach A Reid is here… “They are, what we thought they are”

KTDawk…A lesser Mcnabb on the downside of his career is better than Kolb. You’ll see Sunday.

Kolb have an average arm and go into a shell after being hit…He’s Joe Montana with the “red practice shirt” on.

Watch him Sunday

Paulman, I agree with you about this team not really being a championship contender last year but that didn’t stop a lot of fans and media persons from expecting that. Remember going into week 17 last year, if we beat Dallas we were going to be the number 2 seed. You don’t have the chance to be the number 2 seed and not be a Super Bowl contender in a lot people eyes. I don’t think this team is a contender now but that still doesn’t mean I should want less.

The notion with a lot of people has been that McNabb has been the biggest on field problem of why we haven’t been successful in a lot of games. So now you come back this year with the same exact offense but a different QB who is supposed to be more accurate and be better suited for this offense, so people are going to expect about the same or better. And rightfully so when the Eagles claim that the team isn’t rebuilding (which I don’t think we are) and hasn’t taken a step back. Of course they are supposed to say those things but at the same time don’t come to us acting like this team will be improved but expect fans not to expect improvement. Just shut up and play ball. All the young guns need to stop talking about how they will be and just do it. You heighten expectations when you do that and a bunch of fans eat that stuff up.

I was listening to WIP last night and this guy called in and said we will be 13-3 this year and win the division and make it to the NFC championship. He was dead serious. His reasoning was because he believes Kolb will be able to win us 2 more games than McNabb with the same offense and a better defense. That’s the stuff people are talking about.

As fans we are not supposed to settle for less and be happy with a solid 8-8 record. Expecting a super bowl is different than accepting mediocrity.

Paulman, you have to think about like this. People wouldn’t get all pissed and wanted McNabb out the city or Reid fired if they didn’t think their team was supposed to win. But because fans expect their team to win (no matter how unrealistic it is) the anger comes out. So when you read angry posters or hear someone that was so upset that was because they don’t the team was better. Now whether that should be the case if a different conversation. I don’t agree with it, but that’s how it is.

PW, JJ, and all his natn’l titles and SB trophies wound up being wrong didn’t he, PrimeTime is a PrimeDouche, and even G’s opnion isn’t always consistant.

I absolutly hate it when analysts pick us to win the SB..it’s been just about every year they do it and it’s never just because we had 5 at QB. This year I don’t see a single person even have us on their post season boards. I say good…no one really had NO on thiers last year..not even Jimmy Johnson.

We’re a good team right now, not great or elite by any standards and I’ll believe we are when we’re a 2 seed without having to rely on team “A” losing and team “B” winning. The past 2 years we made the playoffs it was because we needs other teams to win/lose we didn’t get in all by ourselves. Teams that make it on their own steam are true contenders.

“G” said..

Rodgers is an outstanding athlete and he’s capable of getting outside the pocket, buying time for his receivers to get open with his feet, then making throws downfield for big plays. Rodgers is a big dude, which is why he was able to be sacked 50 times a year ago, but still have a huge year statistically. He can take a hit and he can break tackles.

He’s got a strong arm, which allows him to make deep throws from any place on the field.

Does this sound like someone else we once knew?

How and the Hell people are comparing Kolb to Aaron Rogers when he don’t have the Arm or Athletic ability of Rogers?

Compare ths dude to Bobby Hoying with a weaker arm.

I think every fan in every city want’s their teams to win,to bring home a Super Bowl Championship
but too many Eagles fans are unrealistic and cannot be objective enough about looking on how good the Eagles are or are not, versus the competition to the rest of the NFL..Maybe all the years of having the lable of a “Loser City” has perpetuated the desperate need of having a winner so bad that many Fans get distorted views on how good their teams and players really are.

No problem. I pride myself on having a broader outlook as well. The point of my post however, IS to address eagle fans, columnist, radio personalities, and others under the eagle umbrella and remind them of what thev’ve said or stated over the last 3-4 years. The national media and other fans were never my issue or concern. Just so-called real fans with an every changing litmus test as to what constitute a great qb.

I hear you Coldbrew,
We are all passionate Eagles Fans or we wouldn’t be on here commented about every move, player, article, written on them.. Sometimes we fans get too close and caught up on the hype, rumour, blogs, talk radio that we don’t take a step back and see what is going on around the league.. If we went by some posters on here, this team would never be competitive and then by some others, this team will be Super Bpwl Champs and never lose.. The reality is, the Eagles are a good solid team that is awful young (3rd youngest average age in the league at 25.5 years of age) so th efoundation is being set for a good run for the next 4-5 years is key players perform up to their abilities (Peters,Kolb,Maclin,Bunkley,Patterson,Bradley,Sims,Samuel & Mikell to name a few)
I am looking forward to 2010 with an eye to the future for I really expect this team to be a little rough out of the gate and to improve by mid-late season so there overall reacord will probably be around .500 but waht is key is that the young players improve and gel as they get more game experience .. Kolb obviously is the key on Offense but so are Maclin,McCoy, Peters,Justice all have to improve and show that they are next leaders of this team, On defense, there are like 5 new starters compared to last yers D and they are healthy which DC McDermott will have his chance to show what he can do and he cannot afford to have similar results as last years Defense,so there are big years needed from Bunkley,Sims,Bradley,Hobbs,Mickell,Tapp and of course the all the young guys in Allen,Graham,Teo and Lindley who will pay significant roles this year and moving forward..
