We’ve got a quarterback controversy whether Andy Reid wants one or not. It’s one thing when the fans believe in the second-string quarterback more than the starter, but when it’s the players, there’s a major problem.
It was far too obvious that the Eagles were one team with Kevin Kolb in the game and another team with Michael Vick in there.
I thought it was a mistake on Vick’s part that he said he thought if he had played the entire game they would have had a chance to win the game. Vick can feel that way but he shouldn’t have said it. The former first-round pick said all he needed to say when he played so well in the game.
Vick electrified the team with his skills. Reid was asked after the game why the team looked so different in the second half as compared to the first half when they gained only 49 yards. The head coach took the responsibility to cover for his starter.
The truth is that Vick’s speed forced the Packers to abandon many of their blitzes. It will cut down on the blitzes that every team will use. If you run a blitz against a quarterback with the speed of Vick, it can easily be a recipe for disaster. If he gets away by breaking contain and before you know he’s gone for good.
All of those who said Vick couldn’t run the offense were proved wrong as he made the correct reads and the appropriate throws. Yes he worked his magic with his legs, but Vick also stayed in the pocket and ran the offense. I’ve seen him do this in practice.
Reid studied Vick when he was in Atlanta and always believed he could improve his fundamentals and make him a top level quarterback.
He started out with some short throws to Jason Avant. The throw down the middle to tight end Brent Celek was a thing of beauty. The touchdown throw to Jeremy Maclin was another great throw.
I give Vick credit because he’s been taking the coaching and getting better at running the offense. The constant work at practice helped Vick improve his fundamentals tremendously.
Yes he should have tried to run it in when he tried to connect with DeSean Jackson in the back of the end zone.
“Could have been a game changer,” Vick said as he looked down and shook his head.
“It’s probably one of the plays that I’ll beat myself up over the next few days about,” Vick said. “Sometimes you get indecisive and sometimes you want to give guys a chance to . . . ”
He also missed Jackson a couple of times on crossing routes because Jackson is so fast a quarterback will throw the ball behind him if you throw it like you’re throwing to the other receivers.
On the quarterback draw when ended the game on fourth down, Celek let Clay Matthews get inside of him and that’s what cost them the play.
All you need to do is listen to LeSean McCoy talk after the game, hear him raving about the magic of watching Vick in the huddle and you realize that most of the young guys on this team already believe in Michael Vick because they grew up watching his exploits. They’ve never seen Kevin Kolb do the things that Vick has in his resume.
“He was just being himself”, said DeSean Jackson after the game. “Everybody knows that he’s a dynamic quarterback who can run and throw. He just let the game come to him. It’s just good to see him out there making plays. We actually had a chance to come back and win this game. It was tough to lose the game like that.”
The only way the controversy goes away is when Vick is traded or Kolb gets in there and starts playing great football. I can’t guarantee that either of those will happen this season, so you know what that means we’re going to be stuck with for the entire season.
Vick Stats: Vick threw for 175 yards, added 103 on the ground and boasted a quarterback rating of 101.9, marking the fifth time (including playoffs) he has rushed for over 100 yards in a game with a quarterback rating exceeding 100 … Vick became the third quarterback in NFL history to eclipse 4,000 rushing yards, joining Randall Cunningham (4,928) and Steve Young (4,329) … His 103 rushing yards against the Packers marked his 10th career 100-yard game (including playoffs), and was his highest total since racking up 166 on 11/26/06 vs. New Orleans. It was also the most by an Eagles quarterback since Donovan McNabb had 107 on 10/28/02 vs. NYG
Great article G. Vick showed why he’s the playmaker Qb the team needs now, and it just might save AR’s job after next seasont if he continues with Vick. If he doesn’t continue with Vick, and put’s Kolb back in while we continue to lose, AR will have the Sword of Damocles hangin over his head.
Give this man the starting job and a 5-year contract. Trade Kolb for a 3rd-rounder. Kafka looks much more relaxed and confident that Kolb……..and no, Vick did not need to say that, but he is a rebellious dude by nature. So what, as long as he can win. He fits the Philly mold too…. Randall, Donovan, Vick… scramblers. Didn’t it feel GOOD or “Comfortable” to you watching him run around out there???
I’m not a big Vick fan. However, he made our star QB look like a girl.
Wow this isnt anything like i thought it was going to to turn out. Here is where the dumb FO’s words will kill them. They said they are not rebuilding….well if that’s the case then you HAVE to put in the better player at QB. If they would of just come out and said This is a rebuilding year then staying with Kolb is not a big deal. Again, have to put their foot in their mouth.
Yeah he showed he can still run, but will still make a few bad decisions that will hurt you. That ball on 3rd and goal should have been picked and ended the game right there.
What’s the point of having in a 30 year old QB who still can’t play QB and will be a free agent next year? I’d rather run out Kolb 16 times, go 3-13, find out he sucks and draft a QB then to start Vick and go 9-7.
Wait G, Vick can’t possible run this offense. Paulman said he can’t nor could he be a starter in this league. So if paulman said it, it must be true. Right?
Ozz, exactly. If we aren’t rebuilding you gotta put the best guy in there. If you never intended on trying to win this year, Kolb plays the full season.
Mugzy, All QBs will make bad decisions at some time. Did you see the INTs Rodgers threw? He’s of the top Qbs in the league but the were flat out bad throws. We Kolb will make bad decisions too. We see that now. Yes Vick will be a free agent, but I don’t care what anyone says, if Kolb jsut flat out stinks and Vick proves he is way better than Kolb, this FO will be a fool to let Vick go. That would mean you got rid of McNabb and let Vick go and left with garbage. I still think it’s too early, but if Vick proves he’s better than Kolb, you extend him and trade Kolb. Admit your mistake and move forward with the better player.
What’s the point of extending Vick? He has a few years left with those legs. Once the legs slow down a little, he’s toast.
You need a new franchise QB. If it’s not Kolb, we’re in the mud for a few years.
Vick rallied the troops and played as well as he can, and I am happy for him for he has worked hard to get his chance, but he is gone after this season and will play only as a back-up.. This season is for Kolb to find out if he is a legitimate NFL QB and obviously he played a poor game yesterday. He will have to take his lumps and come out playing versus the Lions. But Kolb is in the long-term plans for the Eagles while Vick is not… As far as trading Kolb, if he falls on his face here for the EAgles after preparing 2-3 years in a very QB friendly system with stable coached, then what would his Trade Value be.. yes that’s right, pretty minimal, don’t you think… Give it a season folks….
mugzybrown, I didn’t say that’s what they should do just giving you a different perspective since you seem to think that your view is the only one. It’s not a far fetched idea especially if Kolb stinks or gets hurt again. Try to think outside the box and consider all the options. Now whether they should do that is a different story.
I liked vick’s game beautiful, but Paul i agree we need to find out who and what we have in Kolb. If you add the Ravens game with the chiefs, saints, the pre-season and training camp, i am not sure, but I think there might be a really good player in there.
Kolb never asked for the hype nor did he nudge it along. When I look at him I don’t see linert, leaf, hoying, or any name you want to throw. Don’t wack me for saying that fellas, I’m not spinning kolb, just thinking out of the box; taking a different perspective.
Which ever way the coaching concenses lands. Vick-Kolb lets just put it together and move forward, if Kolb truely is a pretender then I have to believe AR will do the right thing (I hope). For now he has a pretty good QB record McNabb, AJ, Garcia (They brought in the right back up to match this team), hell they coached Vick up, so there you have my one inflationary cent, for what its worth. Thats my story and I am sticking with it.
Guys on here saying Vick is out of here next year….You sure you want Kolb as the QB for years to come? Look…I’m an Eagles fan and support Vick. He proved he could play after being rushed into duty and the team plays better with Vick. Vick is flat out the better quarterback if we’re going with what we see on the field. Vick is the future of the Philadelphia Eagles and even an older Vick is faster and have a strong arm than Kolb…We need to spend our time prepping a warrior, Vick…We salute you.

Clay Matthews’ teammates gave him a hard time when the Packers linebacker knocked Kevin Kolb out of Sunday’s game and they had to face Michael Vick, according to Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee.
“We said, ‘What are you doing man?’ We’d rather have (Kolb) in there,” defensive lineman Ryan Pickett said with a laugh. “Vick, he’s a headache for anybody who plays him. We came out (of college) together, and I think I’ve played him every other year and he’s a headache to stop every year for a defense. He just showed he’s back in form. But our defense answered the call.”
Defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins agreed.
“(Vick) he changed (the game) a whole lot,” Jenkins said. “You were almost wishing they put the other quarterback back in. Chasing him around is not fun at all.”
The other quarterback . Jenkins didn’t even mention Kolb by name. Those are quotes Kolb should stash away for the next time the Eagles and Green Bay face each other.
