Eagles Pre-Draft QB Position

For years Andy Reid has run an offense that doesn’t fit the strengths of his quarterback, Donovan McNabb.   McNabb is a better deep thrower than he is a short passer. It makes sense to let him do what he does best.

They should take advantage of this situation by building a strong running game and throwing the ball down the field.  They should take advantage of the speed they now have at the wide receiver position in DeSean Jackson and Kevin Curtis.

This means getting the offensive line straightened out, drafting a young running back, teaming him with Brian Westbrook, then running the ball more effectively and throwing it downfield.

Notice I didn't say running the ball more often because that's not going to happen with Reid, so more effectively will have to do.

Yes, the Eagles have done a lot of winning with Reid coupling McNabb and the short passing game but they haven’t won a championship.  McNabb’s best year was when Terrell Owens and Todd Pinkston were the team’s wide receivers and he was throwing the ball downfield.

I’m not talking about changing the entire offense.  I’m talking about tweaking it in order to get the best out of McNabb.   Throwing downfield takes advantage of his arm strength.

I think number five could have one of the best seasons of his career if the offensive line is stabilized, the tight end position is improved, and Westbrook stays healthy.

With regard to his contract, I think the Eagles are going to offer him an extension if he and the team get off to a good start.

As for the backups, Kevin Kolb has something to prove as the number two quarterback.  Unfortunately for him, he can’t prove anything in the preseason.

He has to get into a game that counts, play well and lead the Eagles to victory.  If Kolb doesn’t get the chance to play, expect him to start making noise.

The third guy in line, A.J. Feeley has shown that he can lead the team to victory in a backup role.

If McNabb were to go down, Kolb would take over.  Reid would give him a good shot to run the offense but if he were to struggle for a few games, Feeley would then be given a shot.

Currently the Eagles are very strong at the quarterback position and aren’t likely to draft a player at this position.
