This Was Not A Good One For The Eagles Defense

It was really nice to see the Eagles do a great job of giving Donovan McNabb a rousing ovation prior to the game.  It was a classy move by Philadelphia Eagles fans.

The game started at 4:15 but the Eagles defense didn’t start playing any resemblance of NFL football until the second or third quarter.  This isn’t the first game in which that has happened.  Of course Andy Reid took blame for it and said he’ll have to straighten it out for the next game.

Eagles punter Sav Rocca booted a line-drive punt, which was returned into Eagles territory.  Somebody lost contain on the right side of the coverage unit.

Quintin Mikell started out the game with a dumb horse collar tackle on Santana Moss.

Did you see Mikell get run over by Ryan Torain?  It was one of the worst displays of tackling that I’ve ever seen by a safety.  He looked like a mosquito getting run over by an 18-wheeler on the expressway.

Somebody should ask Mikell if he got the license plate of that bus which ran him over.

Those stretch run plays at the beginning of the game by the Redskins may have “let the cat out of the bag” on the Eagles defense  and showed other teams what they can do against this unit.  The stretch running play seemed to expose the Eagles lack of size along the defensive front.

The Eagles defense will likely see this type of running attack, if Michael Vick is out for a while and Kevin Kolb has to start.  If the Eagles don’t come out and jump on teams, the defense is going to be pounded with running games by the Giants, Cowboys and any other teams that like to run the football.

Notice how the Skins ability to run the football, neutralized the Eagles pass rush.  Trent Cole and Brandon Graham weren’t a major part of the game.

Would somebody please cover the tight end?  I don’t care who it is, but somebody please try to cover the tight end?  Donovan McNabb’s touchdown throw to Chris Cooley was too easy.  There’s no way you can make it that easy.

It seemed that Stewart Bradley got over their late and was beaten down the seam on the first step.  Bradley really didn’t play well yesterday.

He was supposed to help them be more effective against the run and he didn’t help at all.  The Redskins ran right at him and the rest of the defense.

We saw Ernie Sims make a few plays today.  He showed up that great speed by running down McNabb.  That’s the one thing Sims has is speed, but he never causes any turnovers.   I’ve seen enough of him.

Nate Allen should thank McNabb for that gift interception.  It was an ill-advised throw.

In the second half with the game on the line, we saw the defense get pounded again with the Washington running game.  They let McNabb get loose a few times on third down scrambles, which hurt, but it was their inability to shut down the run which cost them.

Next week they’ll play a Niner team which runs the ball well.  Guess what they should expect from a winless San Francisco team.

There is an easy fix to all of this mess…just FIRE ANDY REID NOW were not going win the superbowl this year anyway so we might as well fix what is wrong. I have said this for a long time now # 5 was never the problem. you trade a franchise QB within the division and he comes back to beat you in your house??? Andy Reid should be fired immediately for this fiasco. Kevin Kolb was supposed to be ready, quicker release, hit receivers in stride instead he shouldnt even be in the NFL!!! are you kidding me??? Andy Reid is the real problem and I dont care how many NFC titles he has won. it is about winning the SB anything else is horse manure. we are the only team within the NFC east without a superbowl championship and with AR will continue that way. He and his whole staff needs to be FIRED immediately.

None of the defensive players could explain what the Redskins did differently in the game that they didn’t on tape just the same old bull about having to execute and look at tape and correct mistakes. Stewey has hands of stone and thought he was playing one hand touch in covering Cooley.

Talongrip, I’m with you. With Andy Reid and his hand-picked idiot, Morhinweg, we’ll NEVER, EVER see a Super Bowl in Philly. The NFC East was weaker when he was winning. Now that tthe rest of the East has gotten stronger and are on to this dodo’s philosophy, he either won’t ,or can’t , adjust. As judges of talent. they are even worse. PLEASE LURIE, FIRE REID.or, better yet, SELL THE TEAM you belong in Hollywood not as an owner of a professional football franchise.

I thought the Nate Allen interception was a symbolic gesture of “passing of the torch”

Well all the really good Eagles coaches have gone onto other teams and haven’t been replaced with equal value–Fisher–Spagnolo–Childress and one died Johnson

To Slick1
the Rest of the NFC East better… are you kidding me…
The NFC North and South Divisions have surpassed the NFC East as far as a higher quality brand of football

It’s no secret the Eagles defensive tackles gets pushed around. The idea is they are 2 gap penetrators in this 4-3 defense. I have a problem with the concept because they are undersized on first and second down when the run is most likely to come and do get pushed around far too often. On the third and longs smaller defensive ends take the spots when their quickness is supposed to give them an advantage. I think Bunkley can be good if he adds 25 pounds and just clogs the middle and bull rushes most of the time. The most domonating defensive tackles over the last 10 years have been huge men; Nata, Haynesworth, Ratliff, both Williams in Minn, Henderson, Stroud, etc. Give me 2 monsters in the middle to clog up the run, keep the linbackers clean, require both guards and the center to block and the defense would be much better. Everything is easier said than done, but it just takes monsters to clog up the middle if your running a 4-3 or 3-4 defense.

JP, I agree brother they do need to get some bulk on the line that is going to bring the “Fear”. Hey fellas I tell ya i don’t give a blinking $#%$% how strong or weak our division or NFC conference was when we were winining we played the games we played and am I am not listening to revisionist history just to pile on Big Reids real problems of today. We won every game fair and square, I wouldn’t trade it for anthing ( Except a couple of S-bowls which we could have had). Slick1 you are correct the other teams have adjusted well to us (Hell they should we spank their a…s long enough for them to get some damn good draft positions near the front row. Anyway I agree with most of the above statements, not all but most, just don’t apologize for winning, you don’t hear cowboys fan complaining about beating up on a hopeless 13 loss eagles back in the day do you. As Always Amigos LONG LIVE THE EAGLES
