I don’t know when Andy Reid will do his Monday news conference because the team got in so late this morning after their game against the 49ers. I’m going to be available to discuss the Eagles with you right here on GCobb.com in this article.
Kevin Kolb played well and helped the Eagles get a much-needed win last night in San Francisco. LeSean McCoy continues to show that he’s amongst the better backs in this league.
The defense came up with five turnovers to get the win despite letting the Niners come back in the second half.
The special teams continue to be anything but special.
Feel free to leave your comments or questions for me and I will respond. I’ll be with you until 1pm.
Talk to me now and let me know what you’re thinking.
Why not move Herremans to Left Tackle?
G, any development from Clayton or Cheney in practice?
Also, what is the deal with Reggie Wells? Is he hurt or do the coaches think he’s not that great? Doesn’t know the scheme enough yet?
Also, I noticed that when Celek got dinged up and needed a break they put in Garett Millls yesterday. What about Harbor? Did Harbor take a step back in his development or just not there yet?
Clayton and Cheney are doing much in practice. They’re just working on the scout teams. I could see them getting a chance later on if the linebackers struggle severely. Clayton will definitely get the chance to start next year.
Obviously they don;t think Harbor is ready. He doesn’t even dress for the game. They’re going with only two tight ends. I could see them giving Harbor some work, if Celek can’t go for some reason.
are the birds happy with mike bell? are we pursuing another option?
I don’t think they’re happy with Mike Bell. He’s been a major disappointment and you can see what the Saints didn’t want him back. We’ll see if they start giving some reps to Joique Bell
G what is the deal with special teams?
if u had to guess and i know its early but if u had to guess who do u see as the eagles starting qb next yr
do you think we keep vick ?
kolb has to work on that arm strength
Looks like we played a lot of our rookies on defense:
Graham got a sack/forced fumble, and Lindley got a pick. Allen played all game with Coleman getting some playing time.
We also got a good return from Jorrick, do you think he should be our primary guy?
Also did you think we were getting to cute on defense.
What is Graham doing in pass coverage down the field?
April is emphasizing the guys staying in their lanes to the point where they’re not playing aggressively. Not playing aggressively will not only get you beaten on the football field. It will also get you hurt.
G you think Andy is going to keep running the football or at some point wont be able to help himself and will get pass happy?
G the special teams difficulty is a result of the problems that plague the rest of the team. They are just not a physical football team! From the starters to the back-ups. I watched the Titans and the Cowboys game and the Titans Lb’s and Dline from starters to the bench are solid! They play physical and aggresive at the point of attack, and are big. Thus, on specially teams, you see lanes open on returns because those back-up linebackers are running down and hitting people in the mouth. My concern with this team has not as much been with the players, but the philosophy of talent evaluation, and the system on defense. I dont think you can win it all with Jim Johnsons defense.
Phillywill – I don’t think the Eagles know who will be the starting quarterback next year. They know Vick has the biggest upside but can he be consistent. If he can then he will be the guy. If he can’t and Kolb can be consistent then Kolb is the guy.
mflick – I do think Jorrick could be the number one return guy. He’s got speed, catches punts and kickoffs well and he runs strong.
mflick – I had an NFL guy who watches the coaches tape of the game each week tell me the Eagles are trying to do too much defensively. He thought they tried to do too much in the game against the Redskins. I can understand why they were doing it against Alex Smith. The dude makes a lot of mistakes.
Ozzman – I think Andy will run the ball as long as they’re having success with it. Once the success stops, the running will be reduced. You know his track record.
Wilcher – I think you have a good point, but I think you can win with a small team like this as long as you’re putting points on the board, early. You can bully the Eagles if you have the time to commit to the running game.
I think the reason Kolb was successful was the running game. Sometimes the running games doesn’t work but in the 4 th you can bust one long. If Kolbs going to be successful we need to stay balanced. It brings a physicality to the offense. It also helps the O line.
I think a running game helps both Kolb and Vick. Any quarterback’s job will make easier, if he had an accompanying running game. You can succeed without a running game but it’s a harder job.
Hello G,
What did you think of LB’s Sims and Folou’s play last evening,
Also, who should the Eagles match versus the athletic TE’s they will see coming up for the test of the year since it’s pretty apparent the Bradly just does not have the athleticism to stay with these elite TE’s after about 10 yards or so..
And do you think we are strong enough at the WR position with 4 Players active and a 5th player
(C Hall) or need to go out and maybe grab another physical, more of a possesion type of WR…
G, im only looking at history with the “style” of defense they play. In all of the NFC playoff and championship losses, even the Super Bowl. The plan of attack has been the same, Run the ball against us (because we are small up front), Throw quick passes to the wide recievers, or running backs(which nullifies the pass rush of the front four), then, when the d coordinator gets frustrated cause he’s not getting pressure and goes to a zero blitz, they BURN us with a big play for huge chunks of yardage rinse, and repeat. Tampa, Carolina, New England, The Saints, Arizona, and last year Dallas, all the same result against this defense. Think of the Joe J. play against Tampa, and compare it to the first half play of Larry Fitz in Arizona? all the short plays to Deon Branch in the Super Bowl and compare it to Miles Austin last year…same formula beats us EVERYTIME.
Kolb should be throwing to big physical receivers. They fit his style. I don’t think they’re going to need to go out and sign somebody if Cooper can’t come back this week.
Sims and Fokou did a good job of producing a turnover each, but I have no confidence in Sims getting better. He’s a great athlete but not a great player. Fokou will get better but he’s got limitations because he doesn’t have great quickness.
They don’t match up well against good tight ends because they don’t have great size and athleticism at the linebacker position.
Wilcher – you make a great point and that’s why a good big player is better than a good little one.
Carlos Emmons, Corey Simon, Darwin Walker, Tre Thomas, Shawn Andrews…all players this team never found propoer replacements for. Walker and Simon would get you 8-10 SACKS a peice at the DT spot. Bunkley and Patterson may split 3 sacks a year!? Thats terrible!
You ever notice Reid is considered a GREAT coach because he has taken the Eagles to 5 NFC championship games and a Super Bowl but McNabb is considered a choke for those same reasons?
Someone get me Kelly Washington on the phone. Boy did I pick a bad week to stop sniffing glue.
Any interest G in former redksin WR/Returner D Thomas..
IS he worth bringing in to look at and would open up a Roster spot since he could be a factor in the
Return game (saving D-Jax/Hobbs) and also be that 5th WR..
Bring him in and place J Colvin & C Hall on practice squad freeing up another roster spot for DT J Owens in the event that Bunkley injury is more serious..
G- Hugh Douglas made some statements about Rory Segrest, and the poor job he is doing with the defensive line.
Why would the team keep putting this guy in higher positions when he clearly failed in his last position? They traded up to take a defensive lineman in the first round, but have this guy in charge of his development. Why would they do this?
Green-Because the Eagles Org is the land of never-ending last chances. see also: Shawn Andrews, Sean Consadine, Stacy Andrews, Hank Baskett, Mike Vick, Jeramiah Trotter, etc…
Segrest will be VP of football operations before he’s finally let go. Only to be replaced by Bobby April..
and i know this has nothing to do with nothing
but our kevin kolb of the sixers has been anything but advertised this pre season
2-9 last night 5 pts 2ast 3to’s
evan turner 14pts 7ast
like i predicted with the birds evan turner will replace jrue as our starting pg by mid season
y dont 1 of these philly teams hire me dammit
Some more injuried around the NFL
COwboys ILB B james tore some ligaments and may be out 4-6 weeks
Cowboys TE M Bennet suffered high ankle sprain and in a walking boot..TE Witten another poosible concussion..
Packers TE J Finley out for 3-4 week with Knee Sprain, OLB Matthews JR out with High-hamstring pull
G man, with all these injuries not only this season but in recent years, how are these teams going to play an compeitive football over a new proposed 18 NFL Game schedule..
What are your thoughts as a former player on this, how expanded would the Roster and PRactice squads need to be so the quality of Football is still competitive in the last month of the Season
This SPort is becoming like the NHL where it’s realyl becomes a season of attrition and the teams who are lucky in not having top players out with serious injuries will be the competitive ones…
Pman, Thomas sucks. That’s why he got cut (and he’s on your panthers now anyway). Why do we need to address the 5th Wr spot? We have no injuries or depth issues at WR. And the return game is fine – you want jackson playing there because he’s that good. Do you take Roy Holliday out of the rotation because he might get injured? No you let him pitch cause he’s a stud at it. You let Jackson return punts because he’s a stud at it.
GreenFan – I agree with Hugh Douglas that Rory Seagrest must have something on Andy Reid. The guy has a weak resume and he was a terrible special teams coach. He’s nothing to write home about on the defensive line. Sometimes I have no idea what Andy’s reasoning is.
Paulman – Injuries are starting to play a bigger role in which team wins and which team loses. I think they need to add ten players to the roster but they’ll probably only add six. The game is more violent because of the short passing game. Players are faster and they’re colliding at faster speeds.
Cobb,
I’ve been saying for a a while now, that the day of the running back is about to return to the NFL, because pass rushers (linemen and linebackers) have been getting smaller/quicker. I think it would be a good time to ahead of the curve. Cower Power!! Any thoughts?
BTW: Can we get a thread on game day (during the game)?
drummerwinslow i agree GAMEDAY THREAD.
