This draft isn't deep in tight ends.
The guy mentioned on top of quite a few of the draft boards when it comes to the tight end position is Fred Davis of USC. He's a better receiver than he is a blocker. Davis is a converted wide receiver who has great ball skills.
He was productive during his years at USC and should continue to make plays on the NFL level.

One of the top rated tight ends coming out this year is John Carlson of Notre Dame. He's strong and a good blocker but he doesn't have the pass receiving skills of many of the other tight ends.
A number of the scouts think he has the best combination of size and speed in the draft but I'm not so sure. He ran a 4.9 at the combine then came back and ran a 4.7 at his Pro day. I don't think he's going to be much of a pass catching threat.

Dustin Keller of Purdue had a tremendous combine and is rising on draft boards. The kid made have the biggest upside of this group.

Jermichael Finley of Texas is the young man who worked out for the Eagles recently. The kid has some playmaking ability. It seems that the Eagles are stocking up on tight ends. The position is an integral part of the west coast offense.
If they grab him, I would take it as a bye bye to L.J. Smith after the season is concluded.
