Let’s Take A Closer Look At Eagles Offensive Explosion

Has this been an amazing season for the Eagles with twists and turns everywhere?   They’ve only played six games and you would think the season has already gone by.

The Eagles have had injuries at nearly every position on the offense, especially the offensive line, yet they continue to get the job done.

Of course everybody has questions about the quarterback position, so I’ll give you my take on it right off the bat.

Andy Reid said Michael Vick will be the starting quarterback if he practices this week, but I think he’s going to find a way to let Kevin Kolb continue to be the starter this week and it only makes sense.

Vick will likely be able to play next Sunday, but he won’t be at full strength.  If he were to get hit hard by the Titans, it could re-injure his ribs and set him back for weeks.  He’s also been unable to practice for a couple of weeks,  so coming back after the bye would let him get in week or two of practice before starting again.

Kolb has been playing very well and should continue to start until Vick is closer to 100%.   I still think Vick has the ability to make plays that can’t be coached and I believe they’re going to need some of those plays when the game plan and the blocking aren’t as good as they were yesterday.

At the same time, Kolb showed us againt that he has the ability to be a very good starting quarterback in this league.  I applaud his play.  He has really stepped up under the microscope and the pressure.  The throw to Maclin on the eight-yard touchdown was a thing of beauty.  As Maclin said, “he put in the only place where he could put it”.

Reid said it was great situation to have two quarterbacks that you could win with and I agree with him.  Think about it.  Other teams in the league have had their starting quarterbacks go down, but none of them have had their backups get the production that the Eagles have had.

DeSean Jackson was on fire when he started the game against the Falcons.  Now after suffering another concussion, he had one a year ago against the Redskins, Jackson won’t be playing next week versus the Titans.

Jeremy Maclin on the other hand, stepped into the number one wide receiver role when Jackson left and had a career day of seven catches for 159 yards and two touchdown catches.  He’s got six touchdown catches this year.

Going forward, it’s going to interesting to see what happens at the wide receiver position.  Jackson is as dangerous as any player in the league, but the concussions and his size might have to make the Eagles wonder about Jackson’s durability.

Jason Avant did a nice job at the flanker position with Jackson down, but you could see the defensive backs start to creep up with Jackson on the sidelines.  The Eagles aren’t the same team without Jackson.

I was wondering what the Eagles were going to do to John Abraham in his battle with Eagles left tackle King Dunlap. The big fella told everybody during the week that he could handle Abraham, then he went out and proved it.  He did have one hands to the face penalty but he wasn’t jumping offsides.

The Eagles had Abraham wondering what was going on and who had the ball.  I don’t know if Abraham ever recovered from that reverse by DeSean Jackson on the Eagles second play from scrimmage.

Surprisingly, Abraham didn’t try as many bull rushes on Dunlap as I had thought.  He tried to beat him with speed moves which was playing into Dunlap’s strengths.  The guys arms are so long he can tap you on the shoulder if you’re sitting across the room from him.

“I thought big King did a pretty good job”, Andy Reid said after the game. “He had one penalty for hands-in-the-face, but when a guy is trying to bull-rush you and you’re 6-9, sometimes that’s going to happen. I thought he bent well, and I thought he delivered his hands in tight. He has 35-and-a-half inch arms, so when he extends those, I’m not sure there is anyone in the league that can get into his chest. He battled all the way through.”

LeSean McCoy is starting to dance a bit too much in the backfield, I know he was trying to make a big play, but he’s got to go back to getting what’s there.   He can’t force a big play, he must take what’s there and try to get the big play when the opportunity presents itself.

The entire offensive line did a tremendous job of blocking for Kolb.  He had time all day to sit in the pocket and go through his progressions.  He got sacked once, but that sack was because of error by the receivers on a wide receiver screen.

I’m getting more concerned about tight end Brent Celek, he’s been far to inconsistent catching the football.  In this offense, the tight end has to be a dependable receiver.  He’s got to catch the football when it hits his hands.  It hasn’t cost them a game yet, but going forward he’s got to do a better job of catching the football.

Great assessment G. I think we need to start touching on how Shady holds the damn ball too. He’s fumbling WAYYYY too much. It’s going to cost us sooner or later.

Alright TO ALL USERS…….im gonna have to man up here and acutaly say it. Kolb had a very very nice game. I think the one interception was just bad luck cause it got tiped a few times. I will however say that was a bonehead head throw that almost LITERALLY got desean KILLED….just saying mcoy was WIDE OPEN. He stood in the pocket like a MAN for once. He made beautiful reads with some really nice throws. I think all in all a very solid B+ against a VERY GOOD d. That being said vick is still the better QB but i must agree with the fat pig. He is right when he says we have 2 starting caliber QBS who can win games and thats avery good problem to have. GO BIRDS

I am amazed how well the offense played without a big game from McCoy like he had against the Niners

I thought his continuing to be a run threat was what the O needed to balance things out

Good article as usual G. Agree with Celek and his hands-issues. Hopefully it is not a trend… And I agree KK can be an effective QB IF he has protection. Without it he APPEARS to hear footsteps, and his effectiveness drops considerably and hence the Vick argument. Wonder if Cleveland would give up a #1 before the deadline?!

I think McCoy injury caught up with him,
He didn’t seem to have that explosion he has shown all Season so far and tended to dance around a few times when he did have openings to run thru.. He’ll be ok for I think he was a little worn out from
the 49ers game and it’s probably a good idea to give him some breathers in the 1st half so he can be a little more rested for crunch time..Once RB J Harrison is ready, they should have a pretty good 1-2 combo and Buckley showed he is more that adequate to get a few rushes too..
With the win this week and the overall Offense looking real good, I would expect that Vick,D-JAx,Peters will all be held out this week versus the Titans so they can get a full 2-3 Weeks of healling and be ready to go versus the Colts, but the way Kolb is playing right now, I think it’s hard to
pull him out..

great analysis i agree with everything. rbent celek i believe is still nursing that wrist injury from early on (cant remember if it was wk 1 or 2), im trusting when he feels closer to normal he will be reliable again. props to the staff for the gameplan, to the oline for executing, to mccoy for grinding out yards on the ground, and kolb for dominating with his weapons.

nasty hit on desean, but glad its a concussion and not a neck/back injury, although we dont know how we willl recover. it was a football play, it was unfortunate, and a mistake by kolb he threw that too late but its the game. hope he has a speedy recovery he is probably a top 2 explosive players in the league, behind CJ because RBs get more touches. those 2 can score any time they touch the ball and i believe they will when i see them.

desean will probably be back after the bye and start with vick, it would be nice going into that game healthy and in first place because i think dallas beats the giants in dallas next wk. i know people will talk about the trade deadline, but both our QBs have been injured and filling in for each other, were gonna need the depth throughout the year and deal with contracts in the offseason. every team needs a backup, we have 2 starters.

tennesee, that will be a physical and could be an ugly game. if we can find a way to contain CJ and not allow more than 1 or 2 runs of 10+ yards, vince young doesnt have the weapons to burn us and our pressure wont allow young to run wild. if we get a decent ground game going at tennesee, our aerial assault should carry over even without desean, although we will have to spread it around more.

we have a good problem at QB, whatever gets the W, andy reid is looking like a genius right now. trading a hall of famer because he has a former pro bowler and a QB of the future. the situation may play itself out with performance and injuries etc, idk whats going on or whats going to happen, but as long as we are getting wins while trying to sort everything out, im cool with it!

G:

Kudos to Big Red and Marty Mohrningwheg (or however else you spell it.) Game ball to Dunlap, Kolb and Maclin. I could not believe I was watching the same team I had watched previously. Watch out for Tennessee though. Fisher is a better coach than Big Red.

G:

I definitely start Michael Vick this week. And I expect him to astound. Kolb can wait until Vick gets hurt again – and that will happen, unfortunately. The OL played very, very well yesterday. Good job.
But here comes Tennessee….

no way man, vick gets an extra wk off then the bye. we have the rest of the season to use him and kolb has the hot hand. it just makes too much sense, and would be foolish to risk vick because we simply dont need to man. vick is the better man this yr for the job, but kolb is making a name for himself and i will say theres a 100% chance he starts at tennessee

Agree with Wmonell
There is no chance the Vick starts this week versus Ttitans, maybe after the bye week versus Indy.
If Kolb has another great game next week and the Eagles beat the Titans, then Kolb will be the man
for the remainder of season (considering he doesn;t get hurt) and Vick will be used more in Wilcat/Eaglcat packages..I do think that VIck will be utilized a whole lot more that he was as a back-up previously and would get 15-18 snaps/plays a game …

Folks be real…the falcons defense looked pretty weak! The Eagle man handled them on both sides of the ball…The Falcons have a 4 -2 record, but can easily be a 3-3, or ever an 2 -4 team…I’m not knocking Kolb’s performance, he did an excellent job…however, I still believe Vick would have done just as well against that horrid defense the Falcons put on the field yesterday!

@ Paul Mancini
Even if Kolb wins next week against the Titans, Vick will be the starter when he is healthy! Vick offers defenses challenges that they dont worry about with Kolb…Vick can make all the passes Kolb can make, Kolb can not make all the throws Vick can make…Kolb is a solid QB dont get me wrong, but Vick opens up soo much more (running game, a defender on D has to account for Vick, which opens the passing game up more) …Do I have to mention the difference in running ability?

Also lets be honest…The coaching staff called a hell of a game yesterday on both sides of the ball!!

True, Vick like all scrambling qb’s(Mcnabb,Cunningham) look amazing for most games, it’s the Chamionship games i am worried about. Vick has a passing pct of 61 and Kolb is leading with Brady, Manning, + Brees, at around 67. That is a big difference. But then again those qb’s with high pct. also win Super Bowls against those great defenses. Vick would get shut down. Scrambling qb’s look like ultimate weapons until they play in Championship games( the D shuts their running and weak passing down) Cunningham,Mcnabb, Vick all throw nice bombs to their WR, but to win SB, u need qb who completes his passes and moves the chains.

Another thing, Scrmbling QB’S get hurt alot, Remember Cunningham, Mcnabb. I am afraid Vick will get hurt too and miss games, oh nevermind.

Before Vick’s injury he was the best QB in the league at converting 3rd downs….Vick has moved the chains just as well if not better than the qb’s you mention…also his running ability makes up for the 6% difference you mention…no way you’ll have manning, breez, brady or kold rushing for close to 100 yards in a game…Vick has ran with the ball his whole life…I’m not worried about him getting hurt at all…I think you’ll see Vick running when he can and either getting out of bounds or sliding more often from here on out….

I say, play them both.. In for 2 series and then out for 2 series..
Have VIck run the 2 minute offense at the end of the half and at the end of the game…
Also have Vick in there for Red/Zone sshort yardage situations…

The fact is Manning, Brady, Big Ben, Brees, have 67% now ,but their SB victories usually had higher pct. For example Brees last SB was 82%. Vick, who has 61% would never complete that much against a SB team. In fact, it probally would be 55-57 % against a great D.

Did someone really just blame Kolb for DJaxs’ injury…

PM, I say give them a half each and change up every game. Play Kolb for the 1st half and work the field, put up some points and the 2nd half, bring on Vick to runn the already tired D into the ground. And Vice versa, let Vick make the CB’s run the entire field all game for a half and then turn Kolb loose with the no huddle O and pick them apart.

Wow WWW,
That would be an awesome game plan…
Have Vick in a single set-back in the shot-gun formation
Have K Dunlap and A Howard lined up as Blocking TE’s outside the OT’s to make the Offensive Line
7 players across and have D-jax/MAclin as WR’s positioned wide on either side and have Celek in motion.. Run for about 3-4 running playsm then fake the run hit throw it deep to the WR’s
if they are covered hit Celek in the middle of the field to keep the chains moving and then do it all again..
