With rookie safety Nate Allen sidelined because of a sprained neck, the Eagles have signed former Montana safety Colt Anderson off of the Vikings practice squad. Anderson spent the 2009 season on the Vikings practice squad and was on that squad again this year.
Anderson’s agent, Ken Staninger told a Montana newspaper that the Birds have been after this guy for a while.
“The Eagles wanted to sign him to their practice squad this year when the Vikings cut him,” said Staninger. “He said, ‘No, I’ll stay loyal and give the Vikings one more year.’
“Then the Eagles called this morning, and they’d had another injury, were short-handed, and wanted help on special teams,” Staninger said. “The Vikings – they haven’t promised anything, but they’ve said all along they loved Colt and wanted to keep him.
The Birds have only two safeties on the roster Quintin Mikell and Kurt Coleman, so Anderson will be asked to step in and learn the system.
I expect to see Eagles linebacker Keenan Clayton utilized as a safety in some situations. Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott used Clayton as a safety against the Colts, so I expect to see more of that this week.
Back to Anderson, he needs to be a fast learner because he’s only going to have a few days to get a grasp of the system. I also hope he has some speed because he doesn’t have much size, standing only 5’10” and weighing 194 pounds.
Anderson will be playing special teams this week, since he’s going to take some time to learn the defenses.
They’ll probably focus on eight or ten coverages that he’ll be able to master by game time.
Here we go again with the “Scrap Heap”. Coleman is the man, a real Thumper that we need around here since Dawk left. By the way, good article on Brian Mitchell. Donovan was and still is to passive. He needs to grow a pair and tell it like it really is. Favre and a host of others don’t hold back when they’re being thrown under the bus by coaches. Lets skin da skins on Monday. GO EAGLESSSS! Peace.
Here we go again with Andy being smarter than everyone else. 3 safeties on the roster? No problem! Injury problems? Uh oh…
sean considine without knowledge of the system. I was wondering how McNabb was going to get his revenge. Better buy him some flame retardent underwear because he’s going to get torched. 1AA Montana.
They should allow the teams to carry at least 5 more players especially these days with so many injuries
I am sure the Players Union and coaches would like athat but I assume the owners don’t want the increased payroll
In 2008, Anderson served as the team captain and saw action in all 16 games. He recorded 129 tackles including 63 solo and 6.5 for loss, one quarterback sack, three interceptions returned for 80 yards, six passes broken-up, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.[4] That season, Montana advanced to the national championship game before falling to Richmond, 24–7. Anderson was selected as a Buck Buchanan Award candidate.[1] The conference named him an All-Big Sky player for the third year and he also received the team’s most valuable player honors.[5] Virtually every FCS All-America team selector named him to its first team.[6] The American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press,[7] College Sporting News,[8] and the Walter Camp Foundation named Anderson to their first teams,[7] while the Sports Network named him an honorable mention All-American.[9] After the season, he participated in the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game.[10] Anderson readily embraced his hometown of Butte, despite the negative associated stereotypes of it held by some Montanans. As the only “Butte rat” on the team, he sang a vulgar cheer celebrating his origin before each game
id like to see the birds grab jason allen, first rounder in ’06 and has 3 picks already this year. We then wouldnt have to watch Joselio Hanson play anymore, which is always a beautiful thing.
Montana is a very good Division II Program and competes in the Playoffs almost every year..
Colt appears to be an over-achiever and a hard-nosed player who may work out well on Special Teams. Knowing that the Vikings are not real strong at the Safety position and him only being on thier Practice Squad doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that he’s a NFL quality player, but time will tell and we’ll see how he does. A plus is that the Vikings Pass Coverages and Secondary Schemes are pretty similar to the Eagles as they are coached by former Eagles Secondary Coach Leslie Frazier so maybe he’s learning curve won’t be that much where he can step in if needed..
I would like to see the Eagles check into/out Jason Allen as KTDawk listed above.. He’s pretty big and physical and has 4-5 years experience in which the last 3 as a Starter on a pretty good defensive team with the Dolphins..He also has some return experience and I think at 6′-1″
and 210 lbs, could probably slide to Safety in the pinch…
(I have heard that Allen has had some off-the field issues which may be a reason the Eagles don’t pursue him)
I think by early next week, we will see the Eagles place CB E Hobbs on IR,
I also think that N Allen will be out for 2-3 weeks at minimum and possibly for the Season
CB’s T Lindley and even J Colvin will probably see some action during the next game or 2..
KTDawk, just curious, if the guy was really as good as his draft position projected him to be, why would hte dolphins have just cut him? Chances are he is a bust.
Good move for depth. I think we’ll be fine with Coleman there and Clayton fillin in on heavey nickel sets.Coleman impressed when he got asked too step up. Kinda overlooked considering Manning didnt have much there in the deep thirds most of the game. Dude is a thumper….he played a big role at OSU and can handle pressure. Might be the starter for a few weeks considering Allens injury.Neck stinger or strain takes a few weeks.
Why are Skins fans jaw’n about there W in week 4!?I like the Birds here fellahs. Our run d is much improved since last game and that was the reason we lost that damn game.
Birds 35 Skins 17
Games versus the Redskins over the years are always close and usually a 3-4 point spread no matter what the Teams records were coming into the game.. I am calling for a 23-17 Eagles Victory that again is decided late in the 4th Period..This game will be physical as usual and I hope the Eagles can stay away from any serious injury which seem to occur when they play the Redskins. This now becomes the most important game of the season and win a Divisional and Conference game and stay in striking distance of the leading Giants. A loss versus the Redskins makes the Colts win meaningless and really hurts the Eagles playoff chances moving forward
Agree Paulman, but don’t forget about the Giants on the horizon. This is a tough game to pick. You are correct that the skins eagles always play it tight no matter the record. I am concerned about the McNabb factor, lots to prove and coming off the bye. Vick cannot play at this level the whole season. There will be a let down and/or poor play at some point.
Jakedog…..
Why a let down or poor play @ some point for Vick? Why cant he be like Manning, Brees and Rivers and be consistent from week to week. Stop asuming the worst. I believe as long as Vick, Desean, Macklin and McCoy stay healthy there should never be a let down. I know its tough for all of those guys to stay healthy but the only way I see this offense being stoped is by injuries and lack of focus.
Please, no hating here, but all qbs struggle at times. Vick has been near perfect and at some point there will be a drop off in production, turnovers
I think Vick never has another Turnover as long as he’s playing for the Eagles..
Any Fumbles will be recovered by Eagle Teammates or bounce safely out of bounds and any interceptions thrown will be overturned due to Defensive Holding,Pass Interference,Roughing the Passer,Too many players on the field,etc,etc..
