Eagles Blow Their Opportunities And Lose To The Bears

This game was there for the taking despite the fact that the Eagles defense made Jay Cutler look like a Hall of Famer. Clearly the Birds had the opportunities to make plays, but they didn’t make them in the red zone and that was the difference.

“We just beat ourselves,” Michael Vick said after the game. “Plays that we can make, we just didn’t make them. When we go back and watch the film, we will see so many opportunities we had. We just need to get better, starting with me.”

David Akers kicked four field goals in four attempts but they were putting three points on the board instead of seven.  You can’t beat good football teams by kicking field goals while they’re scoring touchdowns.

The Eagles special teams were anything but special.  Numerous times they let Devin Hester and other returners put Chicago in great field position to score. The Eagles return game was no were near up to what the Bears were able to do.

The Eagles defense did a terrible job of tackling in the open field.  It was pathetic.  The defense did an awful job of covering and playing the ball in the air.

The offense took the entire game to figure what the Bears were doing defensively.  The Eagles offensive line got their butts kicked because the Bears didn’t do nearly as much blitzing as the Giants..  They relied on their front four most of the game to put pressure on Vick.  I take my hat off to the Bears defensively, who beat the Eagles butts upfront.

I understand why DeSean Jackson has grown alligator arms, but it’s still obvious that he wants nothing to do with any contact when a ball in thrown

Huge problems on defense with Samuel out. He is clearly the most important player for the Eagles D. Lindley looked inexperienced and Hanson is just plain awful. Bradley and Mikell are not only not making any plays, but there are actually liabilities in coverage and neither can make a tackle.

Vick played well although he missed a couple of passes to Celek including a possible TD early in the game. He got no help from Jackson though who dropped 2 TD passes. I understand that he is afraid to get hurt after the big shots that he took, but if he is going to play like that in the red zone, then just come out of the game. Let Avant and Cooper have a shot in the RZ or bring in Harbor for 2 TE sets.

I like that they actually tried to target Celek more, though Vick and he still don’t seem to be in synch. I hope that they continue to try to get Celek into the gameplan because he has been on the side of a milk carton for much of the season.

This team has been challenged. It’s time to step up or go home.

One good point made. Up to this point, we haven’t gotten a large return on all the attention given to the defense during the off-season. We had 13 draft picks, right?

Oh and the special teams was ridiculously awful. Field position battle was already lost after every kick. Can anyone explain why Calvin wasn’t the full time kick returner instead of Hobbs? He is much quicker and more decisive than Hobbs. And since you had Hobbs returning kicks, they ended up losing him for the season. Not that I love Hobbs as a CB, but he is better than Hanson and Lindley.

The last 2 weeks will be exactly the same schemes the Eagles will see down the stretch until they show they are patient enough, efficient in the red-zone enough and score TD’s instead of settling for FG’s and don’t self-destruct with drop passes, penalties, sacks and turnovers, questionable play calls..
When in the Red-Zone, the Defenses are playing their Safeties at the goal line and daring the Eagles WR’s (D-Jax/Maclin) to get open, which most of the time, D-Jax/Maclin begin to slow up,get off timing with their routes and don’t look back for the ball as if to tell Vick, “Hey Mike, Don’t throw it to me for I don’t want to get hit in this tight coverage…
Once inside the 10-15 Yard lines, D-Jax should be on the sidelines period and go with bigger targets like Maclin,Avant,Cooper or even Harbor. D-Jax has regressed as the season has gone along in my book, He’s playing as if he doesn’t want to get hurt or doesn’t even want to play “two-hand touch”, he won’t last another 2 years playing “afraid” like this..
Fair catching the final 2 punts in the 4th Quarter when the EAgles need a big play.. what’s that all about.. and fans want the FO to give him #1 WR $$$$ when he plays like this… no way Jose…

They make me want to throw up when they play like this. I hate them and hope they have a bumpy flight home from Chicago. I am not an apologist.

Vick play lights out Thursday vs Houston….and then….

If the Birds make the playoffs, I am unbelievably confident that Vick will be able to go into Atlanta, or New Orleans or Green Bay and play really well. He’s proven it dozens of times before.

He never stares down Wrs. Makes decisions in a blink of an eye. Hits hots reads. Handles pressure. Never lets the rush get to him. Never fumbles.

Eagles biggest game of the Year is Thur vs Texans who are also battling for a playoff run
I believe if Eagles lose Thursday, their Playoff chase will be over.. Only the Winner of the NFC East
will make the playoffs for the wildcards will be the Bears/Packers and Falcson/Saints
I think all 4 of these teams make the playoffs as well as the Winner of the weak NFC West (Rams or Seahawks)
This will leave the 6th Playoff spot between the Eagles and Giants
Giants came back in the 4th Quarter with a banged up team against a hot Jaguars team.. If they get on a roll, they will look back at their game as the turning point.
Meanwhile, the Eagles were done once it was 31-13, though they made a comeback to make the final score closer, the Eagles D was unable to stop the Bears when they needed to and force them into Turnovers. If the Eagles D can’t force othre teams into Turnovers, they will get worn down and give up too many big plays.. How manys TD’s by the PAss have the Eagles giving up…It’s to the point where teams are not even going to try to run the ball much versus the EAgles and wil just keep on passing against them until they can prove they can stop it… Bubble Screens, Quick Slants, are all the Secondary will see over the rest of the Season and since late last when the Cowboys did it in both blow-out games, the Eagles D still hasn’t shown that they can stop it…

You are in trouble when the Chinless Wonder Cutler can throw 4 tds against your D. I do not lose it if they play well and just lose to a better team. That’s life, there is always a bigger badder dude on the next block, but when you go down looking bad to an inferior team with a walking INT machine as a QB, you need to look hard in the mirror and decide if you might not be better suited to a different line of work. I am totally disgusted with them today, I kid you not, the day will come when I head down to the NovaCare center and wait for the buses to return after the flight so I can scream obscenities at them for ruining my week. I want them to know how upset this garbage makes me. If they are going to lose the game, at least win the fight in the parking lot afterwards. Don’t just whine about the bad condition of the turf.

You guys are crazy. If you’re ready to throw the team under the bus for a loss like this then you’re a bunch of idiots. It was a bad field, we didn’t adjust the way we should have. The secondary we had out there was VERY young. We left a couple plays out there, but it’s all good. If we didn’t have the talent to bounce back, I would feel like the majority of you. But we have the talent to score whenever we want….we will be fine……it just wasn’t our day. The Bears played a nearly flawless game – be happy it takes THAT much to beat this Eagles team.

vinnietheevictor
vinnietheevictor
November 28, 2010 11:25 pm

Y a mirage. No doubt. We KNEW (or at least openly talked about) that this was a transition year with so many young players.

Anyone who is surprised that the team (and especially VIck) struggled in a big road game was delusional. That being said, most of the team are 1st and 2nd year players learning their craft…..the past 2 weeks have seen our 10 year veteran QB make the kind of mistakes I would understand if there was a 6 game QB in there (do we have one of those?) Not some 10 year Vet who still cannot:

Hit a hot WR
Make a read against a blitz
throw accurately
stop thinking he has 10 seconds every play
stop fumbling…..wow…I only saw him with 2 fumbles, but NFL.com play-by play has him with 3 fumbles……..

That’s 6 in 3 games….but they just count as sacks, so they don’t really matter……

Vin — I see your Vick hateration is still on. Put the glass down. Vick is the Philadelphia Eagles starting QB, live with it. I think he played well enough for the Eagles to win. Jakedog, what part of the safeties were playing 20 yards deeper than usual do you not understand? What killed us was the interception at the end of the first half and allowing a 10 min drive in the third. The offense took what the D gave them. If you told me we were gonna score 26 on the Bears defense (once again leaving pts on the field as well) — I would have told you thats a definite victory. Our defense and special teams let us down. Period. They will bounce back against the Texans on Thursday and hopefully we get can get things rolling from here on out

True Vinnie,
The better all around team won today hands down.
The Eagles were Out-Coached,Out-Played and ultimately Out-Scored in their loss..
Just like some of the wins have been team wins, this was a team loss… from the SPecial Teams play, to Defense to Offense, they were not focused and it showed where the Bears came ready to play for the entire 60 minutes of the game..
As far as the field conditions, I can’t believe the Eagles Skill players and especialy the DB’s didn’t wear a longer cleat to improve traction, if they didn’t, shame on them, coaches and the equipment staff..It was obvious just in warm-ups how soft the field was going to be and especially outside the numbers where the Eagles DB’s were slipping around as if they were playing the Blackhawks in Hockey. I didn’t see the Bear defenders slipping as much as the Eagles were…

Out of all the garbage on that field today you pick Vick to get on. Are you friggin serious? 5 fg and a td should be more than enough against that pathetic Chicago offense. Cutler sucks, his recievers suck and Forte is avg at best. That McDermitt defense made them look like all-pros. Friggin Vinnie posts that Vick overthrows Celek early? Every qb misses WTF. Behind the pathetic Bradley, Celek who looks like a slow non-athletic white guy all of the sudden. Jackson, the oline, special teams, Mcdermitt. and the list goes on. Do you not remember all the years when McNabb would have bad games and we would punt 10 times? Have you watched Miami, Buffalo etc who have been looking for a qb for 15 years? Stewart Bradley is no where near a dominant middle linebacker and is actually a liability teams scheme to attack in the screen game as well as the intermediate game. Ray Lewis is 100 years old and still commands respect in his space.

When was the last time you heard Bradley’s name called on a game changing play or seen him knock players out of a game? Bradley’s just a guy and this team need to think hard about beefing up the middle linebacker position next season. Fakou is a keeper and even Simms is showing fight but we need a real intimidation coming from the middle line backing position. We need speed as well as power and the Eagles may need to dip early in the draft to get one.

This is just the type of game we needed to correct deficiencies going forward and take a look at our talent in an effort to improve our roster going forward. All in all Vick did enough to win this game. Our offensive line could night compete against 4 men and had no push up the middle. Our defense played scare, (all except Trent Cole) and our safety play was horrendous. Nate Allen have not bounced back from that Tennessee debacle. Hanson should not be in this league, and Trevard Lindley was very tentative against average receivers.

Our starting 1 and 2 receivers didn’t want no part of any contact out there, and the coaches didn’t adjust defensively all game long.

Songs is right. To blame Vick for this loss is completely idiotic. To say that he played poorly is ridiculous unless you are comparing him to his 6 TD game against the skins. Did he miss a couple of passes? Absolutely, but he also had dropped TDs and terrible O-line play. To expect him to comeback when they are down 18 in the 4th quarter is just plain crazy. That is a ridiculous mountain to climb and the fact that they were in the position to score 3 TDs in the 4th is no small feat.

The focus of this whole thread should be about the defense. Specifically the awful play of the secondary mostly centered around Hanson, Lindley and the both safeties. Lindley gave too much space, Hanson couldn’t cover a pee-wee WR and the safeties were slow to react to plays and couldn’t tackle. And to agree with Songs completely, a MLB in this league has to be big and fast or a sure tackler that reads the play well. Bradley is none of those things. He doesn’t make any plays. MLB is high on my list to Santa along with resigning Werth and finding a way for the Flyers to lock up Ville Leino in a long term contract.

Defense and Special Teams let us down. That Bears offense is one of he worst in the league, and they ran all over us.

Akers should just start putting the kick-off out of bounds, at least they will only start on the 40 yard line then, an improvement over what they did all night.

Coaches April & Jauron had terrible preformances from their players. Each coach has a big reputation, and each has had issues throughout the year. They need to start getting better results or look at retiring.

This team is still in the thick of a playoff run. Maybe they are not the “greatest” team that many were believing, but that doesn’t mean that they cannot get things done. One positive thing I saw last night was the play of Shadey. The guy plays hard, every play, and he is becoming a good blocker. Take a look at him blocking Uherlacker up the middle, that was really maximum effort. This team is 7-4, did anyone really think we were never going to lose another game or Vick was not going to have an interception?
I waited until this morning to cool down after yesterday, there are things that need to be corrected, but this team will make changes. Defensive leadership was lacking yesterday, we have a clear leader on the offense with Vick, we need a leader on the defense to step up. Bradley was thought to be that leader, but he came up small and never got his unit together to prevent the big plays. This team will have little time before Thursday nights game, but it is “gut-check” time for the defense. I believe that they will make the adjustments and step up.
