Here I am giving Tucker Carlson exactly what he wants, publicity. He’s a Conservative/Libertarian commentator, who was sitting in on Fox News for Sean Hannity, when he made a ridiculous comment.
“I’m a Christian, I’ve made mistakes myself, I believe fervently in second chances” said Carlson. “But Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did in a heartless and cruel way. I think, personally, he should have been executed for that.”
Carlson was commenting on Vick because President Barack Obama had called Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to commend him and the Eagles for giving Vick a second chance at earning a living at his chosen profession. I happen to agree with the sentiment of the president’s statement despite not agreeing with much anything else of his agenda.
We do have millions of released convicted felons who are given very little chance to earn a living. They shouldn’t be given a break in court and they should be closely monitored but I think they should be given a chance to earn a living. If we want them to be truly rehabilitated they should be given a real chance to redeem themselves.
While we’re on the subject, maybe if we lower the government spending in Washington, D.C. small businesses will be able to hire more of these convicted felons and other people who are out-of-work
I think the Eagles were motivated by more than merely redeeming the convicted felon. They also saw a talented former Pro Bowl quarterback, who was considered a valuable commodity and potentially a franchise quarterback, again.
Still the Eagles should be commended for giving him another chance. They took a chance with the reputation of the football franchise and it’s paid off for them.
I know Carlson was voicing he feelings of quite a few people but he’s talking strictly from emotion we he says that a man should be killed for killing an animal. I understand that there are animal lovers nationwide who might think that makes sense but it’s against our constitution.
Our founders who wrote the constitution based on Judeo-Christian values never argued that an animal’s life was worth that of a man’s. There are sacred cows in other countries but not in the United States of America.
Even during slavery when a slave was considered 3/5 of man, a slave was worth much more than an animal. Are we planning on going backwards and lowering the value of human life?
Carlson was trying to stir up some controversy and get people talking about him and he did just that. He knows that some animal rights advocates want to lower the value of human life to the level of animals.
I’ve heard some say that Vick murdered those dogs. That is an impossibility. Murder is a term reserved solely for taking the life of a human being. Look it up in the dictionary. You can’t murder an animal. You can only murder a human being.
Are we ready to accommodate the desire of animal lovers who are ready to change the constitution to lower the value of a human’s life to the level of an animal? I say no, no, a million times no.
The truth of the matter is that the main reason Michael Vick served 19 months in federal prison was because he ran a multi-state gambling ring. He wouldn’t have gotten nearly as much time for his treatment of the dogs.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Vick’s treatment of the dogs was reprehensible but I’m much more appalled by the legal right of a so-called doctor to puncture the head of a newborn baby and suck its brains out because the mother thinks the baby will disrupt her lifestyle.
I think the lowering of the value of human life is much more dangerous to our culture and way of life than Vick’s disgusting behavior.
I couldn’t agree more G. Excellent, excellent article!!
These conservative over the top politicians are the first ones too get caught doing something grimey and be black listed by there other conservative cult members. So he without sin cast the first stone. Before you comment on my splinters…remove the plank from your eye my friend.
This country and society itself nowadays is so unforgiving and always looking too drag someone down and stone them for there wrong doings. Too me…thats the wussifacation of this country. People are hard working and tough in this country. But look around and see how uptight some people are sometimes. It’s rare too see in this country that someone does something wrong and the media doesnt wanna rack them across the coals.People mess up and deserve too right there wrongs without being convicted for life for them.
Good write up G. Those comments alone by that so called, gentlemen, are the reason those idiots will never be voted in as president. At least i hope never again.
Totally uncalled for and this is why “Journalist” Tucker Carlson has worked for 3-4 Networks in the last 5 years.. He’s worked for CNN, NBC, CNBC and now Fox so you have to consider the source..
In fact I will go out on a limb and state that if it wasn’t for Tucker’s popular Wahsington DC Journalist Sister (Margaret Carlson) , he probably wouldn’t even be in the business.. His Parents are both Washingon DC money/power brokers as well, as far as politics/journalism/media goes…
Paulman with the scouting report on this jerk.Good stuff buddy!!
Tucker Carlson…slew footed penguin out of his breaks/ doesnt turn his head and find the ball/not a real good locker room guy/ selfish/ in favor of the death penalty/ not a real hard worker in the weight room/not very coachable. Has bounced around the league for a reason.
Real conservatives don’t consider Carlson a conservative–They think he is a clown
But in any case his remarks pale in comparison to what Keith Obermann spews on his political show
And I wonder if Carlson meant prosecuted –because Vick was nor prosecuted for Dog Fighting
Dog Fighting was against the State Laws not a Federal law ( but he is just a clown maybe he did want the publicity )
After Vick was found guilty of the Federal crime –the state declined to prosecute on the dog fighting charnges
One thing that always perplexes me about Ultra Conservative/Right Wing/Judeo-Christian
“Rhetoric” that we hear about all the time about such things as the Freedom of Speech and Human Rights, Fiscal Responsibility, Smaller and less Intrusive Government is that this is the same crowd that decides to go to War with 3rd World Nations and spends BIllions & Billions of Taxpayer money on it’s Military Arsenal with little accountability and seems to have no problem pushing the US Agenda onto other Countries and their peoples, though they say the want limited Government here… Does this make any sense…
They state a strong belief on the Founding Fathers Principles of our US Constititution about all people being Equal, and the Freedom to pursuit Happiness and Liberty but on the other hand, they do not want to acknowledge or give equal rights for Women,Gays,Immigrants who are actually living, breathing and Citizens of these United States… Does this make sense…
I am no Rocket Scientist and consider myself a middle of road person who doesn’t have to be
told on how or what to think on either end of the political spectrum, but I am law-abiding, pay my taxes and treat everyone that way I would want to be treated.. What’s the deal …
Paulman
Yep and his sister Margret is as liberal as you can get
I am a conservative and thought Carlson’s comments were BS and way out. Gcobb you are right.
Hey Paul…immigrants? Immigrants have the full protection of the U.S. Constititution, its illegals who are not fully covered, and for the record we have one of the most liberal immigration enforcements in the world. Trying getting by in Mexico as a Peruvian or other sounth American and see what happens to you.
Anyway not going to do the political debate thing today, I do that everyday at work and I am on vacation.
Tucker Carlson is irrelevant and has been ever since Jon Stewart “murdered” Carlson’s career on his own show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE&t=2m48s
Can we stop talking about him and get back to Eagles?
One last thing get over the military arsenal thing brother, without that aresenal over 40 million Chinese military servicemen would not hesitate to snatch up asia and eastern africa, as they are quietly doing right now by getting land rights in africa to the western worlds important resources, and making alliances with or enemies.
I am not a football stat man, but I use to make my living understanding strategic stats, trends and social history. But I come to Gcobb for sports so this will be my last comments in this area. I get Gary’s context of this issue on this site and it fits. Good job Gcobb.
This guy should have made his statements years ago. Bringing up that stuff makes him look even more ridiculous.
carlson has the 1st ammendment right to say it, nbc has the authority to fire him for saying it, and whenever somebody prefaces their comment by publishing their faith invariably something controversial/asinine follows
G, I respect your right to your opinion because this is the good old U.S.A., and I couldn’t disagree more with your ridiculous characterization of abortion. When you equate abortion with “legal right of a so-called doctor to puncture the head of a newborn baby and suck its brains out because the mother thinks the baby will disrupt her lifestyle”, I am appalled by your propaganda! Too bad no no one visiting this site was up to challenging you on your statement. As far as political commentators go, THEY ARE ALL CLOWNS/ENTERTAINERS! I still dig you though, G!
Uh, oh GARY!
As far as Vick goes, if he didn’t “murder” dogs, he did “drown” and “electrocute” them–if those terms are permissible. If we don’t actually acknowledge what he did, it is that much easier to downgrade how extreme his actions were.
maybe some did not challenge because we agree
Hmm I think you just did FANSince, thumbs up to ya. I got nothing else to say, zippo, nadda.
Tucker Carlson is irrelevant and has been ever since Jon Stewart “murdered” Carlson’s career on his own show. Rather than getting stuck in moderation I’ll just say, look up [jon stewart tucker carlson] on youtube. Can we stop talking about him and get back to Eagles?
Oops GARY COBB, that 3/4th’s thing is a misunderstood historical myth, no one ever said slaves were 3/4th of a human. For the purpose of congressional seats the sothern states wanted to count their slaves as part of the population, which would have given the slave states more seats and power.
The abolisionist argued that the south could only count 3/4ths of their slave population as a compromise which helped to keep the south from having more seats and thus having the power to implement even more pro slavery laws, which were being countered and contested by the northern abolishinist seats in congress.
Its like the X-files the truth is out there cue the show music.
jakedog & Monolith, one thing I know is true: there is little real, meaningful political dialogue in this country. It’s all cartoons! As you both know, one “must” be either way right or way left.
Hey I am with Horatio, As always LONG LIVE THE EAGLES
Mono,
I was not talking about “Illegals”..
Just go to the communites where “legal” Immgrants work and live like around the large Coprorate
Farms or Meat and Poultry facilities areas of the Country and such… I just find it hypocritocal of the US to blast Asia/3rd World Countries about Human RIghts,Child Labor Laws,Cheap Labor, etc, etc when while we have Legal migrant Farm Workers and American Indian Groups all around this Country living in poverty and being treated like 2nd class citizens.. check on how many homeless US CItizens and Ex-Servicepeople who are living out in the streets…
My main point is that the US has many issues of it’s own and we need to focus on taking care of
US CItizens here in the Homeland first, before we try to spread or force “Democracy” and “Freedom” to other parts of the world that are simply not ready for it for whatever reasons
If we are indeed the Strongest Country in the World, then why do we continue to spend the most
amounf of $$$ per Capita on our Military..but still continue to have High Infant Mortality Rates, Lower Test and Achievement scores, very expensive Health Care, etc,etc than other developed Nations…
Time is not on my side to speak on those issues, but not all but most of those you presented are also misunderstood or myths just like the slave 3/5th thing. I understand what you are saying though.
Horatio help me out, and I do me out.
Paulman, which country would you be comfortable to see spending the most amount of $$$ per capita on the military? As far as foreign aid goes, the Eagles could use some. I hope our defense has the horses to go deep into the playoffs. It is also worrisome.
I could give one Iota what other countries do with their Budgets.. We have no need to fear anyone..
If we want to balance the this US Budget and get our Fiscal House in Order
I propose the FOllowing
– Cut Military Spending by 15% within 5 years — Do we really need thousands of troops still stationed in Germany/Italy and other friendly, peaceful nations..
-Use the US military to seriously protect our boaders between Mexico/Canada/Carribean to cut down on the Drug Trafficking,Human Trafficking and Arms/Munitions trade and use force when neccessary
– Increase the eligible Social Security age by 2 years immediately and then increase it by another 2 more years in 2025.
– Tax all properties and places of Worship, enough of this Tax-Exempt Status
– Make the NFL Channel availabls on all Cable Prgramming Networks, part of a Basic Cable package
I will propose more following cuts in Government Spending and make every Governmental Department (Justice,Transportation,Education,Parks and Recreation,Banking, etc) have the same 10% reduction in Spending… I have to get some fresh air first…
I’m not one to comment, but let me comment.
Remember when crime in the 1980’s was out of control? Why did it dip so drastically in the early 1990’s? I’ve read several theories, but the theory presented in Freakonomics is the one that makes sense to me.
Roe v. Wade was in 1973. There were tons of babies being born into awful environments for way too long. What happens when they become adults? Chances are, the result isn’t good. Do the math….crime dropped significantly when there were less bad apples out there on the streets. The early 1990’s is right around the age when these kids would have become full-on criminals. I’m a firm believer that if you aren’t prepared to give a child a good environment, then you shouldn’t have it. (Side note: Idiots that use abortion as birth control are just that…idiots. I’m not saying this is a method that should be used willy nilly. Yes, I just said willy nilly).
What irritates me (and I’m of neither political party, I hate them both equally), is conservatives that talk about how life is sacred. It’s life we are talking about! Life is important! Yet, where do they tend to fall on the topic of capital punishment? Oh, wait. THAT’s okay though. We are allowed to take the life of someone who has done something very wrong. Okay, so this isn’t really about “life” then, because at this point, you are condoning taking a life (and I’m not even saying one way or another what my opinion is on the death penalty. Truth is, I’m not sure. But I’m just pointing out hypocrisy). And this paragraph isn’t aimed at G. (I’d like to keep my job), but at people who support the death penalty, yet are adamantly anti-abortion. It’s okay to support both, just don’t give me the “life” argument.
So let’s take a step back. That guy you just executed because he killed four people? Think he was someone born in a bad environment? There is a good chance. If his parents had made the decision that they weren’t ready to try to raise a child, maybe his four victims would still be alive.
And as far as government spending…..what do we spend on prisoners every year? If we were more careful about how kids came into this world and the types of environments that they were brought up in, we’d probably have a lot less criminals. Thus, reduced spending.
Population control is of utmost importance in the world. It might be the biggest threat to our civilization and it doesn’t get brought up nearly enough. I guess it’s a moot point because stupid people are able to make tons of babies even though they can’t properly care for them. And there are too many stupid people out there. You need to be 18 to vote. You need to pass a test to get a driver’s license. Populating the world with more idiots? GO FOR IT.
Okay, I’m done. Spent way more time on that than I was planning to.
Good points Micah..
The best plan I ever heard of for preventing Teen/Unwanted Pregancy is to have every 12-13-14 year old
work at a Chucky Cheese for at least a year…
Once seeing, attending, serving and cleaning up after all those Baby Parties and Toddler Parties seems to scare the “Be-Jesus” out of most Teens….
Paulie, you have to do better than that, Micah just suggested if not correlated effective crime control through extermination
I agree with almost all of your points, G, including that there was nothing justifiable in what Tucker said. If Tucker had made that suggestion about a non-felon, charges could potentially have been drawn against him because it’s actively condoning murder.
I don’t believe that curbing government spending would do much to affect hiring by small to medium businesses. Small businesses haven’t been hiring, for the most part, because of the recession that was in place before the current administration. Regardless of whether federal gov’t spending should be curbed (and it should in some areas, or spent more effectively), lower spending by the federal government would have much less of an effect on small/medium business hiring than lowering spending of state governments. This isn’t really the site to talk about such things, but the time I spent with small business owners (and as an owner myself) showed me that there are so many factors at play that to blame the federal government is to sit back and yell at the cat for all the dog poop in the yard (pun not intended on the original subject).
I also think that killing an animal not being murder is semantics (i.e. – focusing on vocabulary not the reality of the situation). There is a proven correlation between cruel treatment of animals leading to cruel treatment of people. That’s not to say that Vick isn’t rehabilitated, or he hasn’t learned his lesson.
Vick’s actions in the past were deplorable, but he has proven through his actions that he’s at least trying to redeem himself. Let him redeem himself (and also receive congratulations as he’s doing it, because it’s VERY hard to change one’s foundation), and also let each person who feels that what he did was unnecessarily cruel feel that way as well.
The line is crossed when it is suggested that someone should be killed when they have been given a second chance by law. If you spit in the face of one’s inalienable rights, you spit on your own, because we’re all equal under the law. Tucker’s “conservatism” should actually be called “anti-American” based on his comments.
Micah, I also largely agree that population control is an issue, but suggesting that to a right-wing conservative culture like our own is way too progressive not to offend someone. Good luck with that (I’m saying that one with a smile)!
Tucker Carlson isn’t even a fair representative of decent conservative radio; he’s just another trying to earn himself a fulltime job with an unbridled voice that lacks wisdom. He showed himself as a fool and as an embarrassment.
Those who attempt to declare their “righteousness” by stating they are religious are often hypocrites. Even Jesus said to the self-righteous leaders, “Let him who is without sin throw the first stone.” Carlson may call himself a Christian, but he knows nothing of the Word or the life of Jesus, because if he had, he wouldn’t have exposed his heart as he did. Carlson needs to repent and seek forgiveness… publicly, and to Mike Vick!
This is the best piece I have read so far. let’s get that nut nutter out of city hall…G Cobb for mayor.
Did you guys see that Derrick Burgess got cut already? This is exactly why you can’t get hyped over because the Eagles signed a player who used to be good.
G it’s funny that Carlson agree with the slaughter of millions in an unjust war with Iraq and Afghanistan, along with the genocide thats going on right now in Gaza….but is calling for an execution for Michael Vick. He’s one of those “good ol boys” in the day that needed any excuse to “string em up”. Tied any nooses lately mr. Carlson.
Gotta laugh at these good ol Christians who still think blacks are 3/5th of a man…and maybe that’s the underline piece in all this Vick talk. There’s people in this country who feel black people being 3/5th of a man written in all law is equal to a dog.
Songs, there are people in this country who value dogs over the rights of the unborn, the elderly, children, of any color or creed
some dogs live better than all the largely unprotected class of humans listed above, go visit some nursing homes
Back to the Eagles who Cut D Burgess today and signed DE Bobby McCray formerly of the Saints
He’s been around and was very effective last Playoff season for the Saints as he became a starter filling in for a injured DL W Smith of the Saints.. He’s 29 years old, 6’6″ and 280lbs, Who knows what kind of shape he is in but he was a player that I liked whan the Saints first released him back in September..
Eagles also signed DT J Clark who also has been around and is 27 years old and 6’3″ – 295lbs and has played for Arizona,Dallas and Washington and will replace DT J Owens who was placed on IR
spot on the Roster…
and for my last comment about Dogs.. Does anyone know if Sarah Palin is running for President……
PFT has had Kolb starting Sunday up for 2 hours already.
Vick will probably be in the locker room and not even dressed for the game (like the last time vs Falcons) and then Coach AR will be surprised that the media ask’s, why wasn’t Vick dressed and on the sidelines again…
G: Your points were well made except the following: “Even during slavery when a slave was considered 3/5 of man…”. This is a MYTH and must be clarified as it was about representation, not the value of a human being. As we know from history, the northern states were generally antislavery and the southern states were generally pro-slavery. The southern states were being hypocritical in that even though they considered slaves to be property they wanted each one counted as “1” because for every 30,000 persons they would get a congressman. If the north agreed to this, then the south would have way more representation and the south would be able to continue to propagate slavery. As a result of negotiation, the south agreed to the north’s counting of the slave population as “3/5″‘s for the purpose of representation. It is important to note the the Constitution was an antislavery document (“.. all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights…”) but unfortunately, it took another 80 years for the immoral, horrendous institution of slavery to be abolished due to the lack of will of Congress and the Presidents to address the topic and they evaded and pushed the topic of slavery onto the next Congress and President. This led to continued hostility and ultimately the Civil War.
Alot of intersting points here. Micah I think made a point but said it in a wrong way. conservatives are the first to be “Pro Life” when it comes to abortion life is sacred yes i even agree that it is but that law could never be absolute because it would go back to back alley abortions of the 70s and no one wants that .At the same time Conservatives love to send our 18 year olds to war to die for corporate ideals real quick in the name of “freedom” and when i say conservative i am more talking about the staunch moral right that wants “Less Govt” but wants to regulate our morals. I dont find how anyone can be only one thing as it comes to Liberal or Conservative as we all have our own thoughts and there surely is more then 2 trains of thought and that is the biggest issue I have with america’s political system. As far as this Tucker dude i always thought he was a bit of a douche bag. I dont think he should be fired though he is on a network that employs Glen Beck and he says stuff like this all the time and they don’t fire him.
To be honest mscott2112
Most white folk in the South probably did not care much about how the the new Congressional count and districts were going to be worked out, outside of the Politicians,Intellectuals & the Academia crowd…But many of the common White folk in the South did not see Black people as equals to themselves,so a 3/5 representation is probably kind of high for how many folks back then felt which is another sad chapter of American History, but it’s how it was and unfortunately racism in certain parts of the Country today still exist all these years later…
Tucker Carlson is an idiot.
MScott, good points i even brought up a little of that earlier. The thing is that slavery and civil rights have always been fought for and argued over in the congress. There has never really been a lack of will, in fact there has been few sessions of the new congress where slavery was not brought up, even Virgian congress and statesment fought for the abolishment of Slavery, hence the eventual split of the state of virgian in its later years into tow states, which gave us West Virgian.
In fact the issue of slavery was the longest and most fueled debate in the constitutional congress to the point that the new government was nearly not created over it, now what a tragedy that would have been for the world.
@ Paul, the lower classes of the white south actually had sympathy for the African slaves, as they felt that slaves were an unfair advantage to their work life, and actually helped slaves. They didn’t want slavery in the begining, the view didn’t change until generations later as the slave population grew and they blamed their economic situation on the slave population. They then bought into the upper classes theories of superiority. the rest is pretty much like you remember Paul.
With that said I will match our histroy against that of any country in the world on civil rights, pick a nation Colonial Britain, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, Soviet Russia, Communist China, Rome, Egypt, Persia, France, Zulu Nation, South Africa………….okay pick one anyone and get back with me. The death and misery the above nations have casued is umparelled in the concoius of humanity. Those are some real monsters right there. Slavery was evil and we should never forget it, never, but it pisses me of when I see nations with Satanic monster histories pointing a finger at arguably the most generest nation and people in the history of mankind.
Dang what happen? This is Gary Cobbs sports website, sorry “G” LONG LIVE THE EAGLES
Beat the Cowboys, win the Superbowl.
Songsrme, it doesn’t surprise me that you referred to a non-existent “genocide” in Gaza. It fits in seamlessly with other such opinions you have espoused at this site. The only genocidal behavior in the mideast has been practiced by the Palestinians, who worked with Hitler in the hope of bringing the “final solution” into the middle east. The indiscriminate suicide bombings and attacks on Israeli population centers are much more akin to the behavior of Al Qaeda and America’s enemies than that of Israel. That was hater talk there, buddy!
Great article G, I could not agree more, especially with your last point. Albeit, I think you are being a stickler for the definition of the word “murder” and thus not allowing it to be used in the spirit of its meaning. FanSince1960: I could not disagree with you more and I think your point of view is skweded. Micah Warren: we all read freakenomics back when it came out in 2005. (surely you watched the movie recently). It is an enticing read, but don’t get completely sold on the results. All the author did was pick “sexy” topic and produced “sexy” hypothesis /null hypothesis
G for President! It only took you 364 days to write the best damn article of the year!
I’m a Christian. That is not a Christian response to Vick’s action…. and the timing is bizarre.
Fansince…there’s no shred of proof that Palestinians were in league with Hitler…another propaganda lie spinned to excuse more senseless killings in the middle East…Look… Hitler was from Germany…That was a European spat that had nothing to do with a state being developed in the middle east….If anything, the germans who inflicted the pain on jewish people should be paying instead of Palestinians dying. So now, when you figure out how a fight between Europeans ends with the slaughter of middle easterns give me that answer. Until then i’ll conclude that the world we see was “the plan” before there was any such man named hitler. Prescott Bush “George Bush’s grandfather help finance Hitler. The agenda was not created by Hitler for he’s dead yet the planned genocide of Africa along with the middle East continues. Read History and examine the big picture before spouting unlearned rhetoric.
Go Eagles
