We have another post from one of our loyal readers, BSMvideos, and we had to post it. He basically gave us the reasons he doesn’t think the Eagles will ever win a Super Bowl with Andy Reid in charge.
BSMvideos comments:
The Philadelphia Eagles will never win a Superbowl under current head coach Andy Reid. Andy Reid is a good coach and probably a better man.
But he is not a Superbowl winning coach. There are at least two main reasons why.
The first is the lack of a balanced attack.
There are always a few exceptions to most rules, but in football there are some rules that are more than cliches.
A balanced attack means you mix the run and the pass into your offensive game plan with equal attention. The Eagles are a passing team.
According to the Stat guys on MNF Under Andy Reid the Eagles are the most unbalanced team in NFL history. This does not mean that you can’t
win games.
The St Louis Cardinals under Coryell had three consecutive seasons (1974–1976) with double-digit victories and won two consecutive division titles (1974–1975).
Multi-purpose back Terry Metcalf set an NFL all-purpose yards record at the time in 1975. (sound familar: Brian Westbrook and Shady McCoy two excellent ALL-PURPOSE runningbacks)
Don Coryell then won three straight division titles (1979, 1980, 1981) with the Chargers, reaching the playoffs four consecutive times. Previously, the Chargers had not been to the playoffs since 1965. With Dan Fouts as quarterback, San Diego’s “Air Coryell” was among the greatest passing offenses in NFL history. The Chargers led the league in passing yards an NFL record 6 consecutive years from 1978-1983 Source Wikepedia.
Notice what was missing with all of those division titles, double digit winning season, and playoff appeareances? A trip to the Superbowl. Let alone a Superbowl victory. The greatest passing attack of all time and no Superbowl victory. Why?
Once the playoffs begin you must now win 3 to 4 games against the best in the league with the competition usually going up in each round. These are the problems a unbalance passing attack causes that are maginified in the playoffs.
I. You are easier to Gameplan against.
A balanced attack helps to keep the defense “off balance”. This makes it harder to gameplan against you because you must prepare for every phase of the game. Not just the passing attack. Now you are giving playoff coaches and playoff players an advantage before the game even starts.
II. Your Defense Does Not Get A Chance to Rest
Even if you score fast(by passing) your defense is right back on the field. The Defenders need time to rest. They don’t get it with fast scores or 3 and outs.
III. Your Defensive coaches can’t make adjustments as fast.
When you offense has a long sustained drive it not rests your defense, but it give the defensive coaches time to coach in adjustments based on what the photos and the eyes in the pressbox see. In the playoffs the winning coach is usually the one who can bring you something new and stay within the talent of his team or exploid an under exploided weakness in your team. Just being one play behind an adjustment can mean the difference between a touchdown a key 3rd down stop.
The Second Reason the Eagles Will Not Win a Superbowl Under Andy Reid is Personnel
The Eagle front office gets players that are simply too small.
The Minnesota Vikings went to 4 superbowls. The last 3 with an undersized defense. Loaded with all-pros Allen Page and Carl Eller on the defensive line they were pushed around by the Miami Dolphins and the Oakland Raiders in the Superbowl. Those teams set Superbowl rushing records on the mighty undersized purple people eaters. Art Shell and Gene Upshaw pounded those puny defenders into the 700 level seats. You have to have size and heart at your most critical point of attack. The Eagles have spent 3 number one draft picks on Defensive linemen that simply don’t penetrate or get to the QB.
Conversely look at the Steelers drafting philosophy, personel and results. Draft big players. Cold weather players. Nasty tough players. Win 6 Superbowls.
In Summary.
The St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Chargers and Minnesota Vikings of past have shown that Andy Reids sytem you can win lots of games, a few division titles and maybe even an NFC Championship.
Just NO SUPERBOWL.
Excellent post. We will see if Andy fits that mold but I honestly don’t think we will win one with him. I don’t think the mixture of his philosophy and personnel will get us there. Obviously 2004 was the best chance because you had offensive star players in the prime of their career with a very good defense filled with physical players. But in that game it was the same thing. Too much passing and not physical on defense. Corey Dillion ran on us, no pressure on Brady and we all know Donovan played terrible. But again, that’s philosophy. Why keep having him throw the ball. I understand you have “toys” in Westbrook and TO but it’s not about slinging the ball around especially with you don’t have a gun slinging QB. Eagles Philosophy + personnel = Frustrated fans
BSM, what a man!
I’m going to post this again because, in my opinion, this is the primary cause for our losses.
This is the difference between Green Bay and the Eagles. After nearly getting Rodgers killed, they began to call plays differently.

ANDY REID’S TWIN – UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
If you saw any of Green Bay’s 16-13 loss at Washington, you saw an offense that would make Graham Harrell and Colt Brennan jump in the air like Rocky and Apollo did in the ocean. The Packers spread the field and threw … and threw … and threw.
By game’s end, they had called 53 pass plays and only 14 runs. While Rodgers threw for almost 300 yards, calling a pass on 53 out of 67 plays has its downside:
a) The offense is slightly one-dimensional. The dudes out in front of Abercrombie have more layers than that.
b) No time is burned off the clock when protecting a lead (Green Bay led by at least a touchdown for a good portion of the second half).
c)The quarterback is susceptible to getting killed.
Let’s start with the last point. Rodgers is tough, but passing or attempting to pass on nearly every down has its risks. That risk was realized on Sunday when Rodgers suffered a concussion late in the game on a helmet-to-helmet hit.
Quarterbacks don’t suffer helmet-to-helmet blows, much less injuries, when they hand off the ball. Brett Favre might get tennis elbow from one of those ridiculous throwing fakes on running plays, but that’s about it.
The other thing injured from constantly passing was Green Bay’s chance of winning, which brings us to the first two points. Due to the one-dimensional attack, the Packers only scored 13 points against a defense they should’ve riddled for twice that many. Personnel-wise, Jim Haslett’s defensive unit doesn’t match up against McCarthy’s offense. Even without running back Ryan Grant, Green Bay had favorable matchups running the ball; Washington was constantly spread out trying to defend the pass, and Albert Haynesworth, the team’s best defensive lineman (in theory), wasn’t playing.
And still, the Packers had a comfortable 13-3 lead when they took over the ball with 6:42 left in the third quarter. Time to run some clock. So what did McCarthy order up on the next two series with a two-score advantage? Seven passes, three runs. One of those passes came on a third-and-1.
Let’s review: 10-point second-half lead, third-and-1, on the road … and they pass the ball! They had to stay on the ground in that situation. Why? Even if they don’t get the first down, more clock gets chewed in the process of running the ball.
It wasn’t just during the second half that McCarthy abandoned the run. The Packers ran Brandon Jackson out of a three-receiver set on their third offensive play of the game. Jackson, starting in place of the injured Grant, navigated his way through the front line maelstrom, made a brilliant cut, and wasn’t caught until he was 71 yards down the field. Jackson’s scamper led to Green Bay’s only touchdown.
So how many times did Jackson get to run the ball the rest of the half after getting 71 yards on his first carry? Two — two! In fact, the drive after his big run the Packers ran six plays: Pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, punt.
Fox analyst Troy Aikman said during the broadcast that McCarthy had mentioned in a pregame production meeting that “we want to maintain some type of balance,” and he didn’t want to go through another season where his quarterback got hit all the time (Green Bay allowed the most sacks in the NFL in 2009 with 51). That’s what makes McCarthy’s play-calling in this particular game all the more puzzling, because maintaining any type of balance is precisely what the Packers didn’t do.
Actually, I’m just waiting to read responses from the haters. I’ll keep an open mind.
Great post G! Every year we get excited as fans, but truthfully when you look at our team as a whole. It is not on the championship level. Two years in a row. Win and host a playoff game at home. We come up short in both chances. You can’t blame one guy. The philosophy has to change. At the end of the season those small linemen don’t hold up. Our D give up way too many 10 play drives, 3rd down converted at willand red zone touchdowns automatic. It was definately time for McNabb to go. I just wish Reid would have gone with him! Can we honestly say that next year will be better
The offense has to be more balanced to prevent being predictable. Andy believes his different formations is what makes the Eagles balanced. No, he has to mix in the run as a weapon and use it if the defense is giving it to him.
Being predictably unpredictable is the greatest compliment a coach can recieve. Belicek completely changes defenses on a weekly basis, has called games of 80-20 pass and others 80-20 run depending on the opponent. He beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl by running out of their passing formations in the second half. Our defense expected pass and got blown up by runs.
Making guys hesitate and not sure which way to go opens them up to be blocked or run over.
An additional 50 passing formations doesn’t stop the defense from trying to knock your quarterback out of the game.
Thats a tad harsh, I like AR, I think he can win a Super Bowl, but with that being said…..
Balanced Attack???????? What the *bleep* is a balanced attack? I only watch Eagles games, no idea what it looks like or should look like… Its a shame that it is that simple of an adjustment that just has not been made. Number one problem is we call too many pass plays on first down…Some leading into no gains, maybe sacks…now you’re facing long situations. Running the ball a litte more on first down and even second down addresses that problem…Shady was not getting all of the respect he should have from defenses, with a QB like Vick you think setting up the play action would be part of the game plan every week!
The front line penetration on defense is a very valid point…we see the front line struggle to get to the QB, then we wonder why passes are so easily completed to the secondary..The secondary has been used as a smoke screen for the short comings of the front four all season (however, the secondary played awful on many occasions) There’s problems everywhere on defense…There should be no question as to where you need to add talent on this side of the ball (all positions should be open)…you could call heads or tails on this one. There was not one consistent player on defense, whether due to injury or just play on the field.
I think it should read as: “The Eagles will never win a superbowl with Andy ReidS PHILOSOPHY”
Andy is quite a capable, successful coach and no doubt he gets the most out of players. He just needs to change his philosophy regarding drafting, gameplanning and personnel and he will be fine.
Mimitaro
lol
Real
There’s a difference between “balanced” and “more balanced.”
Well said mimitaro. We’ve all chimed in with our complains but I feel like it all comes down to the philosophy which is a direct correlation to the head coach. A tiger can’t change his stripes and Andy is not going to decide to change his philosophy after 10=+years.
I’d also like to add a positive post for once. This team is not far away. We are extremely young and suffered a ton of injuries this year. I think the Packers are the best team in the NFC and I have thought that the entire year. We were 27 yards away and one bad pass from Vick to beating them. Unlike the past couple of years, this team showed a lot of heart. They beat a lot of very good teams and were in every game down to the last drive. At no point did a team blow us out. Last year, I knew the Eagles were overachieving and winning games by beating a bunch of scrub teams. The Cowboys were legit and exposed us for the frauds that we were. But this Eagles team we have now is a different animal and I honestly think we can win it all NEXT YEAR. I think if Jamaal Jackson can come back and play center and McGlynn plays Guard, it’s an instant upgrade to the line. Stewart Bradley will be over a year removed from ACL surgery which we all know takes at least a year to fully recover. Bradley, Chaney, Fokou and Jordan is a pretty solid set of LBs. I think the biggest need in the offseason is DE and CB. If you make a big upgrade at DE, then you by default upgrade the RCB spot; two birds, one stone. Nate Allen is going to make strides after his first season provided he is healthy. However, apparently his injury is not to be taken lightly. Have faith Eagles fan, there is a lot to hang out hats on.
“He just needs to change his philosophy regarding drafting, gameplanning and personnel and he will be fine”.
So basically he needs to change everything about his personnel to gameday coaching? How easy do you think that is? These are not easy things to do. That’s like saying, we could have won with McNabb if he would have been more accurate, had a killer instinct and been clutch. Well duh. In other words you need a different QB. So the same may be true here. You many need a coach who is ALREADY those things that Andy needs to be. Andy needs to be sitting somewhere in a skybox making decisions for the organization and we need another coach to make decisions for the team.
btc
Do you think Green Bay’s change in philosophy helped them?
Scorp
Drafting, game-planning and personnel. That’s why I laughed. I assumed Mimitaro was being sarcastic. Was I wrong?
drummer, in regards to your question to btc, I just think in order to win you have to be able to adapt and play to the other team’s weaknesses. Our problem is that we have to play the same style of football each week to win. Good teams are able to pass heavy or run heavy when they need to. Now, GB is still a pass heavy offense but they also showed against us that they will run if they have to. Andy just wants to pass against everyone. I don’t care about being 50/50, I just want us to be able to run the ball when we need to. Your opponent changes from week to week and your gameplan should as well. I mean is there going to be a week where the running game took over? I mean in a big game. When will be have one of those games. Even the best QBs in the league have to concede to their own running game when the other team is playing your pass offense good.
Here’s my biggest beef,
Let’s give Coach the benefit of a doubt, and let’s say Coach AR changes his Philosphy about a more balanced game plan, with more running plays and better drafting, better player personnel,
Then how about his misgivings of his atrocious game-time coaching when the game is
actually being played.. Is he all of a sudden going to learn how to manage the clock and time outs better, or know when to apply the challenges better
The Reality is that he’s a poor game coach and I don’t see anything that will change that..
You wither know how to work a game and the clock, the officals your time outs, or you don’t..
and all the preparation, game planning and scheming is not going to change this simple fact…
Maybe a bit of sarcasm because we all know he isnt going to change his ways.
Just saying the fundamental things you are born with are there in AR (motivational coach who demands respect and has the ability to get the best out of players) its just his mindset and approach to the game which needs tweaking and thats easy enough to change but bottom line is it aint happening.
i checked out, but after reading what mr. bsm posted, just have to say, mr. bsm, you are right on, your posts should be required reading for all eagles fans, and that last post, from your keyboard to lurie’s ears, excellent stuff right there, and yes the eagles with reid, who will never change, will never win a super bowl
Scorp
One of the TV announcers said that McCarthy told him that the number of yards he gained running the ball wasn’t nearly as important as the number of times he ran it. That had been his philosophy since Rodgers’ injury. It’s also the reason why they had a reputation as being unable to run the ball. They weren’t unwilling, they just hadn’t had any success. Of course we were in the perfect defense for them to do so.
Just the same, I agree with you. It’s about having the ability to attack a team’s weaknesses. The problem is we totally ignore a team’s weakness. When G pointed out that Green Bay had Woodson playing MLB in the first Green Bay game, yet we refused to run the ball, that just blew my mind.
Maybe AR has too much to do on gameday? Perhaps giving MM full control of the offense/timeouts and game management would give AR a better chance to view the game as a coach and apply the right in game adjustments needed? I never liked complaining about a coaches use of the red flag as most of the time the call is made in their ear by somebody upstairs who has quickly watched the replay 3 or 4 times unless it is blatantly obvious to even the person in the nosebleeds.
I’m sure it’s been said before, but the definition of insanity is to continue doing the exact same thing while expecting a different outcome. I would like to think that Banner and Co. took that to heart a year ago after making that statement, but it looks like they were just prophetic for the year to come.
However, it’s hard not to realize that this team, by all accounts, over achieved this year, and that should be acknowledged. We definitely didn’t look like a rebuilding team (except on defense). It’s sad that most of the deficiencies identified for the Eagles at the end of last year (or before the draft) are almost exactly the same as they are for next year – much to BSM’s second point.
I would also add that our line coaching is much more suspect at this point than the talent, because last year’s underachievers while on our team are overachievers on other teams with arguably less talent next to them – both the Seahawks and Titans didn’t start a pair of high round DT’s and a 10+ sack DE on one end from the year before, but Babin and Clemons were still able to apply pressure. Maybe it’s because Babin and Clemons aren’t exactly made for coverage that we dropped them, but Clemons almost had a pick in coverage last week. The personnel won’t stand out if they’re in a system that out thinks itself.
grifft, agree. Hire a new D-line coach who can inject a bit of mongrel into our line and give them the ability needed to get to the QB by themselves, without 2 LBS and a DB blitzing with them.
Grifft
Do you agree that we only looked this good because of Vick?
Thats another problem drummer. The Eagles dont have enough playmakers and they asked too much of Vick. He was always the one who had to win the game for us and provide the great comeback (2nd Giants and 1st Cowboys games). That was the problem he had while in Atlanta, he was relied on to win the game and he tried to make too many plays by himself. I want the eagles team to be able to operate as a team with above average players who each do their role better than the average NFL player, and eliminate any pressure off Vick to have to be anything more than the person who throws the ball and controls the game.
To Mimi
I offered Coach AR and the Eagles Franchise to handle the Time Outs,Challenge Flags and the
sidelines traddic the last 2 seasons..(Free of Charge, my only request is that they would have to fly me to the games and get me a good meal) I am still watiting on a reply…
Just a side note, anyone know how many of Stark’s 123 rushing yards came from running right at
Trent Cole & Sims (the left side of the Defense)…
95 yards on 14 carries around the left tackle and left end for Starks for a 6.7 yard average
running the ball at T Cole and E Sims.. (See the Packers Coaches are smart for they watched the
VIkings tapes and saw that AP had lots of big carries running left on the Eagles with AP getting to the 2nd level consistently) — DE Trent Cole should be relegated to pass-rushing downs only for his
play against the run was really bad the 2nd half of the season and with NO tackle LB E Sims behind him, this is a real weakness on this Eagle D …
BSM
Air Coryell was doing when the league was a “running” league. Defenses were built to stop the run. Now, of course, defenses are designed to stop the pass, which makes it even more difficult. Miami, with Marino, had similar results.
One thing you pointed out is that the defense needs rest. As Buddy used to say, a running game is a defense’s best friend. While Buddy went extreme in the opposite direction by totally ignoring his offense, he was right. These problems with imbalance have a trickle down effect. Your defense begins to look worse than it is because of the lack of rest.
I think the classic example (from this season) is the Titans game. Coming off a big win over Atlanta (where we ran the ball 54% of the time until the 4th quarter), Reid started the Titans game off with a more balanced attack, only to suddenly begin to throw the ball like crazy with 4:00 minutes left in the game. We were up by 11, but ended up losing by 18. The defense was frightful, but the offense contributed with a succession of 3-and-outs, and 4-and-outs.
I thought Reid did a great job of help Kolb against Atlanta. In the past, he had done the same with Garcia and other replacements. Then, he suddenly decided that Kolb was ready to carry the team on his back. No QB can do that. Even the Patriots run the ball.
If you go back and look at the superbowl teams from the past 4 or 5 years….the two teams in the superbowl were not all that much better (if better at all) at running the football than we were.
While many think a balanced attack is the way to go….it’s not always true. The way the game plays out has lots to do with the play-calling.
In the end, it is about executing on both sides of the ball and not turning it over…plain and simple.
I agree about the running game giving the defense time to adjust/rest….i’m a big fan of that….but I just think so many people think that if we run the ball we will win a superbowl….it’s not that easy.
Eaglebeliever.. the Saints, Colts and Seahawks were all the bottom 5 ranked rushing teams in the NFL this year yet they all made the playoffs and two have won the superbowl in the last few years. Running is definitely not the answer if the situation is not right.
Packers game: Justice has two penalties and backed the eagles up to 1st and 30 or something ridiculous. Of course we are calling 3 pass plays there. Celek has a holding penalty on first down, you can guarantee any team is going to have to pass at least twice to convert a 1st down. Vick gets sacked on the first play of the game you know we have to pass it twice again. The eagles constantly put themselves in positions where the run becomes ineffective and not an option.
Exactly….I agree mimitaro…i feel like too many people look at the final run/pass ratio and dictate their opinions based on that. There are circumstances in the game where you can run the ball. Do the Eagles need to do that more? I think to some extent…But you can’t just say “Shady should have 30 carries” when it doesn’t fit into the context of the game being played. You can’t run the ball all the time when you are down on the scoreboard or are consistently putting yourself in a hole….and that is what most fans don’t understand…they look at the overall final numbers…rather than breaking down the game by plays & drives
GCOBB — this is getting ridiculous. Why don’t you post on why the best coach in franchise history who CONTINUES to lead his team into the playoffs year in and year out WILL win a Superbowl?
Are we all mind readers now?
I’m not going to say Andy WILL get us a Superbowl, but I WILL say that with him we will continue to have CHANCES at even GOING to the Superbowl.
If/When he does finally achieve the Superbowl goal — there’s going to be many of you at the feet of Andy Reid asking for forgiveness — including GCOBB.
To be fair Birdo this is BSMs opinion which Garry is quoting. And this is why most of us come here. To have an opinion on our favourite team with fellow fans. You are entitled to yours but keep in mind people usually hold it in higher regard when your post comes without emotion and bias.
Mimitaro and EagleBeliver
Because Mr. Cobb ask us to summit an article and not a novel I left many points out.
Running for the sake of running is not the answer.
But running so your play action pass will work is.
Running so your offensive line gets a chance to inflick pain instead of receiving it on every down.
Running so you can wear out the other teams defense.
Running so your wr’s get a break.
Running so you can limit the amount of time a Aaron Rogers or a QB like him has posessions.
Running so your offense in not predictable.
And most importantly running so your QB does not have a bright red BULLS EYE on him for every single snap.
McNabb – broken ribs, broken leg, torn acl, and sports hernia.
Vick – broken ribs.
Andy’s QBs get killed because everybody in the stadium knows that it’s going to be a pass.
I also left out Andys world famous clock management
I also left out his horrendous red flag challenge record or his inability to throw the flag in the 1st place.
As I stated he is a GOOD coach. He just is not a Superbowl winning coach and is not likely to adjust to do the things that will make him one.
McCoys 12 carrys and the game starting with a blindside sack are proof of Andys ability to Adjust.
Another point I left out. Which would be an entire article in itself.
I understand that mimitaro, but what I’m noticing is that GCOBB is posting things on whats WRONG with Andy Reid and the staff and not how Andy came in third in Coach of the Year.
He defended Donovan McNabb vigorously and ’til this day has not admitted that he, along with MANY others, were wrong and that trading McNabb was the best move to make for the franchise to move on.
Why can’t the best coach in Eagles history and the ARCHITECT of this team get the same love that McNabb got damn near EVERYDAY on this site?
BSM — a Superbowl coach? Really? That’s what you’re going for?
I don’t think Tom Coughlin is a good coach, but he has a Superbowl? Why? It took luck. People want to talk about running the ball and clock management and gameplanning and thats fine — that all plays a part, but so does LUCK. We need some of that and we will get it eventually.
mimitaro you are incorrect. The Saints were ranked 6th in rushing. The Colts weren’t that good of a rushing team. It’s not about yards but it’s about how many times you actually try to run the ball. Sure on paper, our average looks pretty good. Take away Vick’s rushes then what do you have?
And EB when people say balanced they aren’t necessarily talking about 50/50 but run a little more than they do. That’s all. How about making a gameplan around the run for a week? Try something different for a change. Whether the problem is they don’t want to run or can’t run, it’s a problem. So when you say better than us, those teams actually hand the ball off to their RBs and not QB runs.
Birdo, maybe submit an article on the good things AR provides in his defense? A positive article. I already stated a couple of things earlier up this thread.
It’s not just about the ratio it’s about actually trying to run the ball. If a team constantly lines up in Nickel defense why the hell won’t you run the ball? Andy abandons the running game entirely too much. I’m not looking for this team to be the 2000 Ravens and McCoy to rush for over 1500 yards. This team is unable or refuses to run the ball when the situation calls for it. Our short yardage plays have been relegated to gimmick plays with the QB because we’re afraid to run the ball. Again, we don’t have to lead the league in rushing but stop coming out in shotgun in the beginning of every damn game. They have extra DBs on the field do you still continue to pass the ball. Well Green Bay saw us playing 2 deep all game, what did they do RUN THE DAMN BALL. We saw Chicago, Minny and NY playing 2 deep in nickel package. What did we do? Throw the ball, get the QB killed and barely win the games we did. You dont have to run all the time but there are clear situations where you should and there’s no mistake about that. FO apologist need to stop sniffing Andy’s butt.
Uhhh dunno where you got your stats but NFL has Saints ranked 28th for 2010. And if you want to go into the whole “attempts” thing the saints were ranked 30th.
Birdo when you just got knocked out the playoffs again no one cares if he was 3rd in coach of the year. After 12 years, that stuff means nothing anymore. Anything other than a Super Bowl means nothing. So when he constantly loses we will talk about what is wrong with this team and not try to “look on the bright side”. There is no bright side as long as Andy is still the coach. Last year McNabb set Eagles records for passing and points. But in his press conference after the Cowboys loss all people could focus on was him saying “well we won 11 games” and air guitar. No one wanted to look at the bright side then. So just as it was time for McNabb to go, the time is coming for Reid. Period.
mimitaro they ranked 28th for 2010 as in this season that just past. Last year the 2009 regular season they were 6th.
This team is unable or refuses to run the ball when the situation calls for it.
—-
It was 2nd and 3 in the 4th quarter and the eagles ran it twice after passing it all the way downfield. Mccoy didnt make the first down and we were left with 4th and 1 and had to settle for a FG attempt. The situation called for run but maybe if we had of passed it…
And why would we run it when 3 of our drives started 1st and 30, 1st and 20 and 2nd and 18?
My point was those 3 teams made the playoffs and were successful without the run.
The rankings for the 2009 regular season where the Saints won the Super Bowl are as follows:
1. Jets
2. Titans
3. Carolina
4. Dolphins
5. Ravens
6. Saints
7. Dallas
8. Cleveland
9. Bengals
10. Jaguars
So only half of the top 10 rushing teams made the playoffs that year. Kind of sums up the arguement to rush more.
mimitaro, It’s not just a specific play. Each time a team comes out and play nickel defense you have to run the ball some of the time to make them change up. But we didn’t and we don’t. We adjusted to none of the defenses we played in the last month. And that’s the problem. I personally don’t care about running the ball 25 times or whatever. But I am sick of Andy and Marty calling a bunch of pass plays when the oline sucks and the defense keeps blitzing defensive backs. Or when they are drop 4 back into coverage with 2 deep safeties yet they won’t take advantage. While at the same time we try doing the same thing on defense but the other team is smart enough to run the ball.
mimi, I never said the rush rankings mean anything. I was just pointing out you were incorrect and to put out the correct information. Again, I don’t care about the ratio. That’s not my beef. You might want to talk to someone else. But it’s clear this team abandons the run too quickly and never uses it effectively in the game plan. Our run game is base on Vick’s scrambling and screen passes. At some point you will have to be able to hand the ball off and get yards a different way. Like I said I don’t care about ratios and rushing ranks. I don’t think those are a big indicator anymore. But the good teams in the league can use both the rushing game and passing game when they need to when it’s time to win. period.
This team would not be able to put a team away by running out the clock. We did it like time this year and everyone was shocked. It was great to finally see some ball control and wearing down the other team instead of getting pushed around like we always do. Again, I don’t need to see this each game. But I would like our team to be able to do it more consistently.
Nothing I said was incorrect. I was quoting 2010 stats and saying 3 of this years playoff teams were in the bottom 5 for rushing. Then stated they were superbowl winners in recent years. And I know you werent pointing out rush rankings means anything but it strengthened my arguement so I pointed it out.
I know as well as anybody we need to have a scheme with more rushing involved but you have to put it in perspective and the coaches have to call plays depending on what the game gives them.
-1st & 30 no matter if the defense is playing nickel we aint rushing
-1st and 20 we are forced to pass
-2nd and 18 we are forced to pass
-2nd and 3 we run it twice and dont convert anyway.
Mimitaro (and everyone else):
Do you consider Marv Levy a successful coach?
To clear things up lets look at the drives:
-1st drive Vick gets sacked and forces eagles to have to throw it twice from 2nd and 18
-2nd drive start off with a Vick 1st down. They statr the next set of down by rushing twice (awesome) for 7 yards but cant convert 3rd and 3 (oh well, punt)
-3rd drive start with a 9 yard pass followed by a 3 yard rush to convert for 1st down (as you would expect the playcall to be). 2nd and 10 Mccoy rushes for 6 yards to set up 3rd and 4 but wait Celeks been holding so back it comes for 2nd and 20 and the eagles are forced to pass it out.
-4th drive we come out with 3 runs and covert a 1st down (awesome right?) Then we run again on 1st and 10 for 4 yards but get sacked again and are forced to punt.
By now we are down 14 points.
We start our next drive with a false start so 1st and 15. Vick gets a checkdown to Mccoy for 5 to get the yardage back and covert 3rd and 10 for another first down. We start that off with another rush as you would expect and Mccoy only gets 3 yards so as the two minute warning strikes we are forced to go into our two minute offense.
