Philly.com is reporting that the Eagles can’t negotiate with Michael Vick on a new contract. They’ve got to franchise him then try to work out a deal afterward. Here’s what they had to say:
“I’ve written this a few times now, but nobody in the media seems to have noticed. RE Michael Vick and a new contract: My understanding is the Eagles HAVE to franchise him, though they then could work out a new longer-term deal, once they have done so.
Why? Because Vick’s incentives met in 2010 pushed his salary more than 30 percent beyond what he got in 2009, ELIMINATING THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENDING THE DEAL. I have this from an excellent source.
So no, the Eagles are not negotiating with Vick on a new contract. THEY ARE GOING TO FRANCHISE HIM. Then they might be able to work on a longer deal.”
I guess that’s why there appeared to be no real urgency to get anything done during the season
If he needed to tagged “Franchise” for exceeding the 30% Rule..
These rules for player contracts and salray cap stull is getting like the IRS Tax Code..
I guess this mean more work for the Lawyers and Accountants…
If there was just a “Flat-Tax” with “Standard Dedcutions” in this Nation, what would all the Lawyers,Accountants do for work ??? Ridiculous….
DE is easily our weakest position. Especially with Graham out first 8 games. Cole is the only proven player. CB/S is our next weakest postitons. We need 3 of our top 4 to be DE & DB’s
I agree Godson,
Weakest Position by far is the DE.. I actually think the DT’s are pretty good and is probably the
deepest postion on the entire Defense and maybe the entire team.
You could probably add TE to the list also, our TE’s scare nobody and it seems like every other team
has a TE or 2 that you have to gameplan or worry about.. When is the last time another team had
to worry about a TE on the Eagles.. probably have to go back to TE Keith Jackson almost 20 years ago..
Paulman — the Falcons didn’t worry about Chad Lewis in the 2004 NFC Championship Game. We saw how that turned out. I still believe til this day that we would have won the Superbowl had Chad played.

I am not sayting that Celek/LJ Smith/Lewis have never had good games,
but in today’s NFL which really comes down to match-ups and taking advatange of those match-ups,
the Eagles have a very old school TE Corp which doesn’t worry a Defense. They could use an athletic big target who can not only stretch the defense, but be a great target in the Red-Zone and sorry to say TE Celek is not that type.. maybe HArbor can be, but he’s not very big..
