Economy Means DMac Returns

These are tough economic times for the entire country which includes professional sports organizations.

That includes Eagles president Joe Banner and the Birds organization which makes millions from local businesses because of the team's success and popularity.

I don't know where you fall on the issue but I think there are overwhelming reasons the Eagles will probably have Donovan McNabb back next year as their starting quarterback.

Most of the time I talk and write about what's going on with the team on the field.

But in this situation there are factors off the field in this situation that are overwhelming.  I think the economic climate along with the success of a local competitor, the Philadelphia Phillies, overrides everything else.

If you notice you will hear myself along with the other guys on WIP talking about the Phillies much more during the off season than they have in the past.  They are a much tougher competitor with the Eagles for the attention of the sports fan.

McNabb is a household name in the Delaware Valley and around the nation.  Recognizability is worth millions.  Banner and the Eagles know that.

I don't see any way the Eagles will decide to enter this off season with an unknown like Kevin Kolb as their quarterback and the face of the franchise, while they're competing with the World Championship Philadelphia Phillies for the local corporate dollars.

I think Banner and his sales staff need a big name like McNabb to sell the millions and millions of dollars of luxury boxes and promotional packages.

This is especially true with companies cutting back on the amount of dollars they're spending in the entertainment area.

In response to a comment – Corporations have shown no problem spending millions of dollars to tie in with black athletes as long as they stay out of trouble.  Are you familiar with Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods?
