There’s A Good Reason This Coaching Staff Will Go To Battle For Andy Reid

If you want to know why the assistant coaches that will be available today at the Nova Care Complex are going to do everything they can to get the job done for Andy Reid, all you need to do is see what Reid tried to do for his former defensive coordinator, Sean McDermott.

Reid couldn’t save McDermott’s job here, so he tried to make sure he helped him get a job somewhere else.  McDermott was in over his head here as the defensive coordinator, but he had given Reid everything he had, so Andy was going to make sure the kid landed on his feet.

Once he fired the young man, Reid jumped on the phone and called Carolina Panthers new head coach Ron Rivera and tried to help McDermott get a job.  He wanted him to be in a new position before his firing became public.

“Andy wanted it to be seamless, and unfortunately it wasn’t,” Rivera said. “Andy’s whole guise in my discussion with him was, ‘We’ve got to make people understand that it was not as much because Sean did a bad job or anything. It was just as much always going to be tough and unfair for him. We’ve got to create a situation.’ ”

Reid stuck his neck out for McDermott while knowing that he was going to get blistered by the local media for not coming right out and making a public statement about firing the young coach.  Most of the time nowadays, it’s everybody for him or herself.  Once somebody fires you, they forget you even exist.

Say what you will about Andy Reid, the guy understands something about respecting people who go to battle for him. In the old days they called it honor.  My grandfather tried to explain it to us years ago.  My dad has always lived this way.  Grand Pop would quote scriptures out of the bible about “Honor your mother and father, that your days be long upon the earth”.

It simply means, if somebody lays it on the line for you, you should be willing to lay it on the line for them.  Somebody taught Andy Reid this. This mindset flows from Reid to his coaches and down to his players.  Everybody on that staff knows Reid might have promoted McDermott too soon and the young coach might have come up a bit short, but they also know that the young man did his best.

In addition they all saw how Reid honored that and it’s the reason you will see effort from this coaching staff and they’ll transfer that mindset to the players.

It’s too bad more of our society doesn’t know this principle.  We wouldn’t have as many seniors and children left to fend for themselves and we wouldn’t have as much divorce.  Law suits would be cut down to a minimal.

Rather than criticize this quality in Reid, I admire it.  It says a lot about him as a person.  When you can button up your lip in your own defense in order to protect somebody else, you’ve got discipline and a good heart.

He has protected his players for years after games and you notice how much effort they give him each year when the season is on the line. We could all learn from this honorable quality of Reid.

Yes, he made a mistake with David Akers, when he chastised him after the Green Bay loss even though he had full knowledge of Akers extenuating circumstances, but that has rarely happened in Reid’s tenure.  Countless times he has stood and took the arrows and shielded his players.

You can believe that the assistant coaches who will talk to the media for the first time today in their new positions are well aware of what Reid did for McDermott and what he tried to do for the young coach. Not only are they aware of what Reid did, but the rest of the assistant coaches around the league are aware of it.  Do you think McDermott has anything bad to say about Reid?

There’s a good reason that this staff will be sleeping at the complex during the season and doing everything they can to bust their butts to make this team a winner for Reid because they saw what he did for McDermott.  They know if they do their best for Reid, he won’t abandon them.

Today we’ll get the chance to meet the Eagles new coaches from 11:30am to Noon.  New defensive line coach Jim Washburn, new offensive line coach Howard Mudd, new secondary/cornerbacks coach Johnnie Lynn, and the two former Eagles players, Mike Zordich and Mike Caldwell will be available in the auditorium of the Eagles Nova Care Complex.

Check out the site in the afternoon because I’ll give you my first impressions of the new coaching staff members.

Andy seems to be extremely popular within the ranks of the NFL. It’s fairly well documented that he’s outgoing anf funny behind closed doors along with a great work ethic. He does expect the coaches to work hard. They know he doesn’t stand in the way of them climbing the ladder, but a little to willing to allow the good coaches to leave Philly. Assistants can’t be stopped from getting head coaching jobs, but can be prevented from any other lateral move or promotion. The Eagles top young coaching talent has walked and the team was left with the not so great young guys lingering on the staff. I’m happy they got veterans Washburn and Mudd that aren’t looking for their next job like the young guys. Jimmy Johnsom was great for Andy because he was happy as DC and gave Andy the ability to just think offense. Castillo will run through a wall for Andy which is great, but can he call a game as DC?

Loyalty is priority one with Reid, almost to a fault, look who he brought in to back up McNabb, Pederson, who was just terrible, but it was a payback move, banner, Lurie moved McNabb, the decision to bench Kolb was fo decision, notwithstanding the garbage he peddles, the signing of Vick and decision to start Vick was lurie’s, Vick is lurie’s qb, kolb was reid’s, and Reid never wanted to fire his coordinator

I am so touched that andy is a nice guy . We all knew this problems is he stinks as a gameday coach and in big games. We can all talk about how great a man he is next off season too when we are sitting home during the SB.

jroc…ozzz…I am with you both.

I would agree, by all appearances Andy is a great guy to work for and a generally all around nice guy (unless you are a member of the media).

That is great, but it really doesn’t mean sh** to the average fan.

From all reports, Belechick is a real d-bag…but he has brought multiple SB championships to New England…..nobody cares if he is a good guy or bad guy.

Coach the team to win, that is what I am all about.

Really? Did you hear the press conference after the green bay game? He didn’t chastize Akers. That was blown way out of proportion. I heard the criticism before hearing the comments, and when I hear the comments I was like “wait… that couldn;t have been it… When does he go off about Akers?” Apparently that was it… All he said was he made the decision to kick the feild goal because he has a good kicker that he can trust. And the media took it as him saying he made a mistake in trusting his kicker. Ridiculous.

Media always takes and blows things out of proportion……. Its the world we live in that negativity is like the common cold and everyone has caught the fever…… NFL is now the new reality show that pretty soon we’ll be seeing games on the E! Channel…….. You heard it here first…….

i guess i trust andy with his coaching staff decisions. but now he needs to upgrade his player personel, they need to hit a home run with there 1st pick and land at least 2 starters in free agency , and there is where i don’t quite have as much faith in andy.

Nice Article G and having Loyalty and Honor are indeed good traits to have
for everyone and especially someone in a leadership position..
I’ve stated numerous times that Coach AR is a good guy and a good overall Coach, but I still think he lacks that “killer instinct” to win a Championship
It’s almost as if he is a little too nice and is sometimes blinded by his heart and loyalty to make adjustments, changes or take chances. but my biggest beed has always been his “Philosophy” and his 65-70% pass to run ratio which doesn’t win Playoff Games and Championships and especially when your team plays in a Northeast City with the outdoor conditions..
Maybe as his seat gets ‘hotter” we will see a more aggressive off-season where they obtain some veteran skilled players at positions of need and go all out to attempt to win a Super Bowl instead of always looking down the road.. Who knows the status’s of any free-agents and trade scenarios with no CBA in place..No players or teams can make any moves until a new CBA is in place and who knows when this will occur.
My thinking is that this 2011 NFL Draft is not real deep or strong in my opinion.. It has good depth on the DL/LB/OL which are all areas of need for the Eagles, but not very deep anywehere else, so they should use their draft picks to strengthn these positions but I think they need to go out and obtain some Veteran Starters type at CB,S,DE and RG or RT postions even if they have to spend some $$$ doing it.. We all know they are way under the Cap and have $$$ to do this

Reid is the new Holmgren.
Deserves more credit than he will ever get w/o a ring.
Holmgren received the bulk of his love after he won, and after he retired.
That might be the same for Reid.
It does take more than a head coach, more than a staff to win it all.
It takes more than just good players to win it all. Just look at the Packers.
McCarthy isn’t a top 5 coach in the league, with 15 players on IR.
It takes a franchise, top to bottom to get it done.

Back to Andy Reid though.
Despite the flaws and setbacks, I never called for his firing for these reasons.
A good person with loyalty, and stands up for his people.
Not the best coach in the eyes of the media and even some fans,
But players, coaches, front office love him and thats all that matters

I’ve played, refereed, coached, kept stats, scouted, given camps and clinics
I’m a fan, and I’ve seen every perspective.
He is Mike Holmgren Jr., Mike is 1/2 in Superbowls.
Mike is a QB guru, great head coach, great in the front office.
These guys are players coaches, and coach’s coaches.
He came from the branch, and is the foundation of his very own branch.
Coaches spreading throughout the league have derived from Andy Reid!

Not only for us, since we have been waiting forever, but for him and the city,
I hope we get that championship under his belt
(hmm…do they make the world heavyweight championship belt in his size?)

It seems with the new coaches in the trenches, Washburn and Mudd,
That he has stability, veteran coaches that are here for one goal, to win it all.
Not to go on to become coordinators and ehad coach.
But to coach their positions under Andy, win a ring, and most likely retire.

run the ball, and with a ring, which you wouldn’t get, the team would, you could do what? Brag to your friends who live in other cities? Pat yourself on the back? Sustain an erection for longer? Walk more upright? Feel better about yourself?

Hey, I want the Eagles to win the superbowl. DUH. But this whole idea that your life will be better once the Eagles win one is pretty silly.

Look we all know that coaches like Marty Shottenheimer, Norv Turner, Mike Holmgren, Dennis Green, and Jeff Fisher had success as HC…….. But through there years of let downs perhaps on not winning the superbowl……. Maybe there is loyalty within the NFL…….. But now with the new faces of the league like Tomlin, Sean Payton, Mcarthy, and not new but has a shorter coaching span than the names I mentioned (Tony Dungy) and also (John Gruden)…… Have success on winning and winning early on there superbowl chances…….. A lot of these names I’ve mentioned have out coach Andy Reid in either games that mean something or were regular season games that could have put us in better positions to seed us in our favor in the playoffs……..

It’s promising, and he has given his coaches promotions for success.
Individually, our DBs have done a nice job (Samuel is the only star)
Nate did a good job and Dmitri did a decent job overall
Mikell is all-pro, shouldn’t have been, but he is and is a stable player for us
Promotion to Mike Zordich, and we get a solid addition with Johnny Lynn
I like emulating GB in terms of a CB coach and a safeties coach

LBs are arguable, although we had new acquisitions and injuries
It is good to see Chaney and Fokou come in to start and play at least decent
We all know how a healthy Stewart Bradley plays
These are all guys that we have drafted, maybe those 3 are the answer

DL, well we have Trent Cole
Dixon and Laws have improved, Bunkley and Patterson are solid
Graham had a decent rookie year
Parker has been a stable player
We have productive half-seasons & wear down in the 2nd half
So we went out and got one of the best DL coaches there is

Hopefully Juan continues to have his individual coaching success
He did more with less on that OL as a whole since the Tra and Runyan days
And we acquired another great OL coach, arguably the best

Culley gets some love for a back-to-back Pro-Bowler in DeSean
Maclin has good numbers and is improving
Avant is a stable part of our core
Cooper has talent and should be adding more to the mix
It was just yesterday when we had no WRs, got T.O., then let go of T.O.

RBs, I love how we transition from Westbrook to McCoy (we drafted both)
Harrison was able to come in and give us some production (I like him)

Reid, Marty, James Urban, and Doug Peterson
The work they have done collectively on our QB position
McNabb was a Pro Bowler, some Hall of Fame hype, best franchise QB
To make a big move, they felt they have groomed Kevin Kolb
He will be a started in this league, that is inevitable (and people like him)
Michael Vick was 2 years removed from football
This was his first season as a starter, calling a new playbook
Learning how to manage himself, his live
Learning to study and practice after hours, learning how to be a leader
They have done wonders with Vick in the pocket
He may have tried too hard to show he can be a pocket QB
Unlike McNabb, they will help Vick realize when to pass and when to run

Oh, and Bobby April, one of the best special teams coaches
We have Mr. Reliable David Akers (most of the time)
Can’t really speak about Rocca, but i guess he has improved
Stemming from Andy and our front office with Roseman and Banner
We are making moves, subtle such as Dixon and Harrison
Splashy, with Asante, Jason Peters and Vick
Notable, with Ernie Sims (I know, I know) and Will Witherspoon

My point of all this, I like what we have in Philadelphia
We need a few pieces to solve the puzzle such as…well such as what?
If you ask me, our answer at CB could be on our roster already
Would I like Asomugha? of course, everybody does
LB, having a collectively healthy unit of Chaney Bradley Fokou could work
Would I like someone new? Sure, I’ve been calling for Posluszny
Our answer on the DL is most likely on our roster as well
I would say our priority is to get a RT, esp. if our QB is left-handed
Then it is like getting a LT, and that is where I think our focus should be
Followed by CB and RG, and then on to LB and a bigger DT to go with Dixon
Fly Eagles Fly!

Hey G…I ‘ll send my info off screen if you want it so bad.

Everybody agrees…Andy is a good guy who takes care of his hires too a fault. Maybe that is a reason that he will promote a guy to a position that he is not prepared for ( ie: Peter Principle) instead of searching out the best posible candidate? I am an example of the same thing on a smaller scale…a manager that tends to believe that even the poor performers will turn it around with a little more efforts from my managment. There is a rule out there…hire slowly and fire quickly….you take your time and due dilligence up front and recognize poor performance (and the reasons behind it) and cut ties quickly.

Fans are not employees….we are consumers. I could care less if the restaurant manager is a jerk to his employees if the food is great and the service spectacular….just don’t care. If your boss treats you bad it isn’t your bosses fault…only YOU are in charge of working somewhere that makes you happy…it isn’t the responsibility of your boss…if you are unhappy, find somewhere that makes you happy.

With respect to the Eagles….turns out that Andy is the type of boss that everyone would want to work for…and they type of boss that many bosses should emulate…but in the end the guys on this website don’t work for Andy…we are fans of the team…and as far as this fan…I am tired of the same old results.

Yes…Andy should be comended for the qualities you outlined. My father spoke and illustrated the same qualities to me and my siblings…but at the end of the day…at the end of 12 years….what does that mean to the Eagles fans? We have had plenty of coaches that were “good guys” and plenty that were “jerks”..the one thing they all have in common is that none of them have won a SuperBowl….and from the history of the guy in charge now, we have no reason to believe he will be any different.

G, thanks for the post. Great perspective. I particularly liked your comment – “It’s too bad more of our society doesn’t know this principle. ” There’s a good reason for that G – there aren’t enough parents and grandparents in this country like your Grand Pop. This principle needs to be taught and reinforced – at home. Unfortunately, that practice is becoming much more rare these days. So rare, most people don’t recognize “honor” when they see it.

Some good points Wmonell
One area/position I disagree strongly with you is the quality/talent of the the Eagles LB corps.. I think the Eagels group is in the bottom 1/3 of the League and needs a major upgrade… Look at the teams that went deep in the playoffs this years… Packers,Steelers,Bears,Ravens,Jets and even the Seahawks LB Corps are far superior in talent and depth at the position.. The lack of a real LB Coach (SHuey) and at DL (Segrest) probably limit the development of the Eagles recent young players so maybe there is hope with better coaching.. but valueable time has been lost the last couple of years while these Coaches were in place

@Real and Vmonell…… I never said trade in loyalty…… NEVER…….. I said I will take a A@% coach instead of a nice guy…….. (Period) Thats it……. Never said anything about loyalty……. And second of all……. Am I the only one in the the twilight zone????? Yes I know Reid is successful as a coach but big games he doesnt show success against these new coaches……. You would think that with experience he would have the upper hand but no……. Just another trip back at home watching the Superbowl on the couch……. We should have beaten GB….. And at the End we would have beaten the Steelers………. But I never said anything about LOYALTY….. He can be loyal all he wants but winning is a different thing……..

Vmonell….. How do I sound childish when I am speaking the truth…… Thats how society is now……. You can live with all this settle non-sense but you know what at the end of the day…….. The leader loses power……. Put a tooth under the pillow and expect the dollar the next morning…… The city of Philadelphia is not a brotherly city……… The people have been patient long enough and still no championship…….. I rather for him to be a 500 coach through the 12 years than to come sooo sooo close and blow it during the big games……. It took HC Tom Coughlin 4 years to win a Championship for the NYG’s……… He had great success as a HC with an expansion team the JAX Jaguars …… My thing as that we lose our former LB’s coach Steve Spagnola and he becomes the defensive coordinator for the Giants and applied the same scheme and beat us with our own recipe…….. Not only that out coaches the teachers who taught him a kraft……. This year we have an early rude awakening with offensive line coach turn defensive coordinator…….. Andy picked up a defensive tackle that had been cut from two teams. It just so happened that he played for Brigham Young and was Mormon. He put him on the practice squad and he made $80,000 plus. How did this help up improve as a team. This is is like patronage jobs in the government.

On the present Roster I do think a combo of Chaney,Bradley & Fokou would be an improvement over past years LB Corp but would not be a top LB Corp by any stretch.. Bradle is injury prone and his pass coverage abilities are suspect..
Chaney played well in relief but he is a little on the small side to play the “MIKE”. Fokou can imprve and plays the run well, I would actually like to see him blitz more for I would think he could be effective in that role..
I also do like Clayton who I think could be a 3rd Down Specialist and cover TE’s/Backs out of the backfield due to his speed, again I don’t think Clayton is big or strong enough at the point of attack to be an everydown LB..
I would like the Eagles to pursue (if there’s Free agnecy) a Steve Tullock,
or a James Anderson or Ben Leber or a Kevin Burnett and then draft a LB within the top 3 Rounds to add depth

Here’s a list of LB in the Draft that could be selected 3rd/4th Rd who could be good fits for the Eagles

OLB – D Moch (Nevada – 6-2 230lbs and can fly,runs a 4.4 40 time)
OLB – B CArter (UNC- 6-3 235 lbs and runs a 4.6 40 time)
OLB – KJ Wright (Miss State – 6-3 250lbs and was a teammate of Chaney)
OLB – T Keiser (Stanford – 6-5 245lbs and a real nose for the ball)
OLB – C Carter (Fresno State – 6-2 245lbs and runs a 4.7 40 time)

ILB – Q Sturdivant (UNC – 6-2 230lbs and is a tackling machine)
ILB – K Shepard (LSU 6-2 240lbs and runs a 4.65 40 time)
ILB – Casey Matthews (Oregon – 6-1 240lbs and has the family bloodlines)

Schiller if Reid pissed on your shoes you would praise him for making them cleaner and giving them a shine.

I think it is great that reid treats his staff and players with honor… now he needs to honor the fans and stop playing around out there on game days…

I like him, but this is wearing thin…. he needs to balance his offense and improve his defense..

Biggie fries, re jessica beil, good question. My answer is revealing tho, BOTH. If andy wins one here, then we will have gotten both ‘beil and bunker’. You are entitled to think he won’t. But do you know the future? Nope. You don’t.

And as for your obsession with me and my lack of hate for Reid, please show me a quote where I openly and directly praised him at all. I’m not a huge reid fan at all. I am amivelent – luke warm on the guy. Your opinion of him is so extreme that you assume mine is extreme too. Not the case.

I think the qualities you state G our great, I just don’t see how they apply here. He lies to the media and the fans who were going to find out anyway to help land him a job that doesn’t care about him being fired. What purpose did they lie serve? how did it help? Ron Rivera knew he was fired and he hired him. It is insulting if Reid thought the ruse would keep everyone from knowing Mcdermott was fired. Great virtue only applies when it makes sense.

rastadoc – Did Andy lie? On the surface – yes, absolutely. But most parent lie to their kids all the time. White lies are a big part of our society. You have to look at the context, WHY he lied. He’s the coach, minutes after a season ending loss. Picture yourself in that situation. You are required by your job title and contract to speak to the media. You have no motivation other than that requirement to actually speak with them at all. And therefore, there’s really no motivation to do anything except for get through the press conference quickly. They then ask you a serious big question. Just give the an answer, NO coach would tell his hand their. Seriously. And if you say ‘no comment’, then there’s speculation that their fired. If you have been focusing on who’s coaching AFTER a playoff game BEFORE the game itself, then you are f-ing up as a coach. Bottom line. If you know that answer, you’re a fool and you’re revealing yourself as one. So you just stall.

It’s not any coach’s obligation to be entirely honest and open with the fans and media. It’s their obligation to try to win games and championships. It was against the best interest of the team for Andy to say he was getting rid of McD. And for all we know, he really hadn’t made that decision at the time.

He didn’t outright lie.

And don’t say I’m just blindly defending the guy. All the above is dead true about any coach in any situation. I’m not even head over heals over Juan as DC, or Andy as HC. But I hate it when unreasonable criticism gets spewed out of negadelphians. I firmly believe that Philly negativity messes with players heads – not because they are wusses or babies, but because they are humans. And that has contributed (though indirectly and not to a huge degree) to the lack of many championships (any for the birds unless you admit that ‘superbowl’ v. ‘NFL championship’ is just semantics… but I digress).
