Redskins whiffed on WR’s?

The Redskins had three 2nd round picks in last year's draft and so far it ain't looking so hot. Aside from TE Fred Davis, who missed his first ever practice with the team and immediately showed his dedication and work ethic,

the two WR's they took are looking like busts for different reasons (and Davis might be a bust too but that's not what I'm discussing here).

Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post says that Devin Thomas decided to skip last week's voluntary workouts.  Why would a guy who is battling for the No. 3 WR job and who did absolutely nothing in his rookie year want to miss any time at all?  Because he's an immature dude who is not ready to play in the NFL, that's why.  There were rumors that he wasn't going to grow up and be a productive NFL player prior to the draft, but the 'Skins grabbed him anyway.

The other WR they drafted is contributing nothing for entirely different reasons.  He's coming off another knee surgery and hasn't been medically cleared to play yet.  He didn't contribute anything last year either because he was banged up.  He had injury flags raised all over around draft time, but the Redskins took him anyway.

Currently, James Thrash seems to be the lock for the No. 3 WR.  Rag on Thrash all you like, he is a consistent producer who has carved out quite a nice NFL career.  Is he a No. 1?  Of course not, but not many are.  He's a great role player who plays special teams and would probably try to punt if you asked him to.  But that said, one of your second-round picks from last year should at least be making a strong push to get into that No. 3 role (even if it requires reshuffling. If Devin Thomas is getting playing time, he's an outside guy).

The truth is, they aren't.  And they are both missing time for different reasons.  We can trash the Eagles decisions all we like, but they are nothing compared to those knuckleheads down in Washington.  Dan Snyder thinks he knows everything, so he keeps a "yes man" like Vinny Cerrato around because he'll never stand up and say, "don't do that, Dan. That's dumb."

If Fred Davis can't play, then their 2008 Draft will be just about a colossal waste of time and money.  At least they got Chris Horton in the 7th round.
