During the off-season the Phils courted veteran infielder Nomar Garciaparra, he chose to go to the West Coast and play for the Oakland A's instead.
Now that the A's are 17 games back and in last place in the AL West, Garciaparra has reportedly changed his tune. When asked by the San Francisco Chronicle about the possibility of joining the Phils he replied, "Sure Why not?"
A waiver deal could be on the horizon as the Phils reportedly sent scouts out to watch Garciaparra during the A's series against the Kansas City Royals.
The Phils still have a need for another right handed bat off the bench. True, they do have Ben Francisco acquired along with Cliff Lee from the Indians but he's only an outfielder. Nomar would be a great candidate to replace Eric Brunlett as the teams "jack-of-all-trades." As Brunlett has had a tough season with a batting average hovering around .180 all year.
Even with a bad batting average Brunlett has given the Phils solid defensive play off the bench with the ability to play many positions. Regardless of what many may think a player like Bruntlett is hard to find, how may guys can you name that can play all positions besides Catcher and Pitcher?
Unlike most I can see the worth of Bruntlett to this Phils team but Nomar would be a clear upgrade and something the Phils would be smart to look into=
