DeSean Jackson Goes On NFL Network Show, But So What

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson lives in Los Angeles during part of the off season. He’s from Los Angeles and he loves to speak his mind and get get in front of the cameras. The NFL Network is based in Los Angeles even though quite a few of their shows are produced and aired from Mt. Laurel, New Jersey.

Of course the NFL Network is owned by the NFL owners, who currently have Jackson and the rest of the league’s players locked out. Last night Jackson appeared on the NFL Network.

At the same time one of the lead voices of the NFL players, Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday, who was part of the negotiating group which was representing the players in the talks with the owners, was on the NFL Network show as a guest panelist. Saturday was not only on the show last night, he’s been on the show all week.

Saturday has been the Indy union representative for quite a while. I think Saturday’s appearance on the show is a signal to all of the league’s players that it’s okay to go on the NFL Network.

Truth of the matter is that all of the nonsense the union tried to do by asking draft prospects not to go to the draft, isn’t going to achieve anything. The same is true about players going on the NFL Network or not going on the NFL Network.

The fight between the NFL players and the owners is about how they’re going to split up billions of dollars. That battle has changed a bit with the union deciding to decertify and take the fight to court to challenge the NFL anti-trust exemption. The fight is still really about

Which players go on the NFL Network doesn’t matter and NFL players showing up at the NFL draft isn’t going to matter one way or the other. It’s not like the owners are going to say we will take one billion less dollars because the players forced our hand by not coming to the NFL draft in New York.

At the same time, the players are going to say we’ll take one billion less dollars because so many of our players decided to go on the NFL Network.

This is all something to do about nothing.

I think D-Jax can do what he wants, I also think he should go out for the
US Olympic Track team for the 100Meter race and the 4x100Meter Relay teams

G, thanks for acknowledging that “This is all something to do about nothing.” Its so rare for the media to say that, even though its so frequently the case. Kudos

I agree G. It doesn’t matter to me. But I don’t want to hear any hypocrites who were in support of the incoming rookies not showing up to the draft as a show of “solidarity” but are ok with Desean showing up on the NFL network. Either it’s ok for the players, current and future to have dealings with the NFL or it’s not. Can’t pick and choose which ones make sense. I already talked to a couple of those hypocrites and they were fine because they have too much man love for Jackson and I let them know hypocritical it was for them to be ok with this but not ok with the rookies going the draft.

Like I said, I don’t care. If the owners are ok with him being on the NFL Network and he’s ok, doesn’t bother me 1 bit. It’ll be interesting to see what Desean’s peers think (if it comes out). Especially a guy like Drew Brees who was in favor of having the rookies not coming to the draft who was quoted as “how do you feel to shake the hand of someone who’s about to lock you out”. Well Mr. Brees how do you feel about a current player showing up on the Owner’s tv station? I wonder if he could be not hypocritical and at the same time not alienate that player. Probably not.

But G, you know they are going to make a big deal about it. Because that’s like you being on strike or either locked out from CBS but then appearing on WIP to do a show. Do I care? No. But the people who are are looking with scrutiny will of course make a big deal even if they shouldn’t.

What do you guys think about Dez Bryant’s financial problems. I mean come on. Dude just got in the league. I know some people are hard headed and will do what they want but does anyone know the support system in place for rookies and younger players in regards to financial management? They have stuff about their personal conduct but I have a feeling they don’t do much in the financial area.

I mean many of these players come from disadvantaged backgrounds and either don’t know what to do with money or hire someone who doesn’t know what to do with money. They hire their cousin to manage their finances and take care of their whole family. Their cousin lets them do whatever they want without giving sound advice (because he doesn’t know what he’s doing) and the players all along just thinks he’s doing a good thing by employing a family member. Like I said I know many players will do what they want regardless but let’s be honest, how hard is it for an owner to bring in a good financial adviser to run mandatory workshops for their young players. They need to know how to conduct themselves personally as well as financially.

I think we should all start showing respect to the man that is going to be the BEST wide receiver in Philadelphia Eagles history.

I don’t know who Jerry Maclin is so I have no idea if he was on the show or not.

He (Maclin) happens to be the best overall WR on the Eagles squad Birdo..
D-Jax has a lot of potential and speed, ut needs to show me a lot more to say that he is better than Mike Quick, Fred Barnett, Harold Carmichael, Tommy McDonald for all-time best Eagle WR.. Let’s see what D-JAx does over the next 5-6 Seasons to see how he ends up…

Maclin will be the more consistent receiver over the duration of their careers given he can stay healthy. He’s built for the long haul a career of 10-12 years. Jackson is by far the most explosive of the 2 but Maclin will the more consistent one who doesn’t disappear in games or in the red zone. I actually think Andy like Maclin more. Has a lot to do with his maturity level and his less diva-esque attitude. I’d be surprised if Jackson is still around and explosive in 4-5 years. He’s faster than Randy Moss was in his early days but he isn’t built like him.

Maclin is a better overall receiver in my opinion as well, but Desean is the most dangerous. Desean is the one that keeps teams awake at night. When Maclin starts putting up TD’s that win games for the team, then I’ll say he’s the BEST WR on the team.

Birdo I do agree with you. But when you say “When Maclin starts putting up TD’s that win games for the team” what exactly do you mean? What TDs that Maclin caught did not put up a win for the team? We’re talking about TDs receptions and not punt returns. We are comparing the 2 as receivers. Sure Desean is the more dynamic of the 2 because of his return ability. But as far as a receiver goes, it’s arguable that his production isn’t better than Maclin. Sure, it’s more flashy and bigger home runs. But in my opinion doesn’t matter if the caught a 40 yard TD and Maclin caught a 20 yard one. Personally, I’d take the guy that that will give consistency over the duration of the entire season and not just against a couple bad teams.

There’s no denying Jackson’s speed and the affect he has on defense but honestly, look around the NFL and the history how important is it to have a guy with blazing speed? Looks like teams get by pretty well with well rounded receivers who show up every game and not just against Detroit and Jacksonville.

But that’s just my opinion. I’m a DJack guy but I just prefer the well rounded receiver who by the way is pretty fast himself.

schiller, we are certainly at liberty to discuss who we think is better even though they are both on our team. Stop trying to tell people what they should and should not talking about. You comment added nothing but a condescending tone that was better left unsaid. Don’t like what we’re talking about? Ignore it.

scorp – you are damn right you are at liberty to discuss. I made no mention of trying to deny you that liberty nor did i “tell” anybody anything. Infact, both sentences in the post you are referring to have question marks at the end of them if you notice. Keep comparing if you’d like. I didn’t intend to be condescending at all or take away your fun. You can take the last few sentences of your post “You comment added nothing but a condescending tone that was better left unsaid. Don’t like what we’re talking about? Ignore it.” — and apply it to your response!

Serioulsy, no bad blood, hate, condescendence at all. I’m just pointing out, that, IMO, it doesn’t matter who’s better/more valuable/ yada yada yada yada. To me that’s like saying, I got two twenties in my wallet. Which one is better? I’m more interested in the 40 bucks myself.

Well if it doesn’t matter to you, then why is it worth your comment? Let us discuss what we want to discuss without anyone interjecting their opinion about how irrelevant the conversation is. Either you’re in the conversation or not. Period. Don’t sit on the sidelines and talk about how silly it is or useless for us to have the conversation. If we want to compare Jason Peters to Winston Justice then so what. If we want to compare Stewart Bradley to Chaney then so what. Football players are always going to be compared to their peers especially guys on the same them.

scorp, I hear you. I’m sorry if I bugged you. I personally (in addition to my interest in the Eagles and sports) am interested in sports psychology (fans too) and cognitive psychology. I am fascinated by the discussions/conversations/arguments that sports fans have, particularly philly sports fans -both cause they’re so dynamic and because I’m a homer. So I often post my thoughts about that kind of stuff. Clearly it bothers you and I’m sorry for that, but I never mean to tell people what they can think/say etc…

Paul, cant deny the validity of your sarcasm, but I don’t think there’s a ‘lack of cognitive powers’ among philly sports fans. I don’t think it’s a matter of stupdity, or that I am ‘cognitively greater or above’ some of my fellow Philly fans…

I do think there’s differerent ways we can all think about/frame things that would be more benefitial to our mental health and understanding of our teams/their success and failures.

I agree with you Schiller,
Philly fans are as knowledgeable as any in the Country (probably more so)
and are definitely passionate about their sports teams and players,coaches..
I do think the “Little brother of big NY”, the “Losing Image and Reputation” that Philly Sports has, is ingrained into the local population of which the
doom and gloom of many come out often and loud..
I admit, I am probably a perfect example of this, of whatever can go wrong, does go wrong kind of mentality when it comes to the Sports teams..It got so bad that I had to move 500 miles away to be able to deal with it (only kidding), but you know what I mean .. See I am your first patient for your diagnosis…

Paul, and as I’ve stated before, i believe that the negativity spreads to players, and for some (ie Donovan), it can mess with their heads and hence the negativity holds back (somewhat) some of the teams. That’s one of the reasons why I work against it – especially speculative/assumtive/irrational negativity.

I agree with you schiller. The negativity can have it’s effects and many people go overboard a lot. But that’s not to say that people can never say anything bad about a player or team. If a player let’s what fans say on message boards on people in the paper influence their performance for their JOB then I have a much bigger problem with the player. Donovan is a good example of how it affected him. But at the same time, many athletes deal with it all the time and all they do is go out to prove everyone wrong or ignore. Not sure what world everything is rosey and made of marshmallows and cotton candy. There will always be 2 sides to something so to think it’s your duty to try to “fight” the negativity is actually a little funny when most of the time all you’re doing is saying stuff like “you don’t know that” or “what proof do you have”. Who made you the positive police? Anyhow, I find nothing wrong with people expressing their views about something. Now its the ones that are BOTH overly positive and negative that irk me. Because you have 1 group who ignores issues and you have the others who make a big deal out of non issues.

schiller

April 1, 2011 3:14 pm

scorp – of course that’s not to say that all negativity is wrong and nobody can say this or that… I say negative stuff about philly teams all the time, just not nearly as much as some philly fans….

But nobody made me the positive police, I never said I was.

I don’t think everyone has to be positive all the time. And I don’t think I have any ‘duty’ as a philly fan or poster on this site AT ALL. I just personally am motivated to challenge negativity that I think is empty/baseless.

The ‘what proof do you have?’ or ‘you don’t know that’ – to me that’s entirely different than positive or negative…. I do like to challenge people who pretend they know what’s going to happen in the future or just say stuff without thinking it through. That’s a natural part of conversation and arguements. I don’t see it as out of place on here. This is a conversation board, not just a unilateral ‘everyone posts separate comments about the article’ board.
