Whoever Wanted Roy Halladay, As Lee Hurls Another Masterpiece

Lee delivers the baseballDo you remember all of that talk about Roy Halladay?  Remember how Halladay was supposed to be the dominant pitcher we needed?

You won’t hear anything about this from the local experts but remember how so many of them were clamoring for Halladay.

Just like the weathermen and weatherwomen with those bad forecasts, you don’t hear about them anymore after they screw up.

Supposedly Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. was a fool for settling for Lee.

Somebody needs their mouth washed out with soap.

The former Cleveland Indian lefthander now has the best ERA, .054, in the history of the MLB postseason for every pitcher with at least three starts.

There’s no way he could have been better so far in this postseason.  He pitched a complete game against the Yankees and would have had a shutout if it weren’t for an error by Jimmy Rollins.

And so much for the slump that Chase Utley was in.  He took C.C. Sabathia deep twice and the Phils handled the supposedly unbeatable Yankees with ease, 6-1.

This team hasn’t been awed by anything they faced. Now they’ve got the Yankees in a must win situation.

Lee lets one go“Winning Game 1 is huge,” Lee said. “You want to get off to a good start. At worst, we can split here in New York and go home and have homefield advantage. Now we have an opportunity to take both of them here and really have an advantage.”

Lee stayed ahead of the Yankees.  As usual he worked fast and his control was impeccable.  He mixed up his fastball, curveball and change up to keep New York off balanced.

“About me being cool, I‚Äôve been that way all my life. I‚Äôve been playing this game all my life. I‚Äôve put the work in. No sense in being nervous. No reason for me to be nervous … Gametime is the time to go out and have fun and have your skills take over.”

He wound up with ten strikeouts on the evening and made a couple of plays on the mound that embodied his total control of the whole evening.

One occured when he sawed off Johnny Damon and he hit a low infield pop-up to the mound.  Lee made the catch on the ball by sticking out his glove in a nonchalant fashion.

You expected him to yawn when he made the catch.

He made another great catch at the mound against Yankees second baseman Robinson Canoe when he grabbed a ground ball behind his back.

Lee made the catch look like a piece of cake.

He became the first starting pitcher in the history of the World Series, to begin his World Series efforts with ten strike outs, no walks and no earned runs.
