Andy Reid’s 12 Philadelphia Eagles Draft Classes

On Thursday April 28th, the 2011 NFL draft will take place and it will be the 13th draft Andy Reid has overseen for the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s done a good job for the most part on the offensive side of the ball, even though he took a long time to get things right at the wide receiver position.

On the defensive side of the ball, Reid has struggled. He had a great secondary draft in 2002 when he grabbed Lito Sheppard, Michael Lewis, and Sheldon Brown. It’s been touch and go with secondary picks other than that year.

They were fortunate to draft Trent Cole in the fifth round at the defensive end position, but they’ve missed badly on other defensive end picks. They haven’t gotten big time results from the use of numerous high picks at the defensive tackle. Despite using numerous first and second round picks on defensive tackles, not one has become a star or Pro Bowler.

The linebacker position has gotten mediocre results and they’ve been awful with second round linebacker picks, such as: Barry Gardner, Quinton Caver and Matt McCoy. They were all proven to be big-time busts.

Here’s the list of the players Andy Reid has drafted since he became the Eagles head coach in 1999.

A lot of misses on this list over the years..

Unreal how many misses they’ve had. Look at the andrews draft no hits. Last year was the 1st yr they actually had production from players picked rounds 1-7. This is one big reason why there is no championship here yet, was it that they really couldn’t evaluate players or they didn’t want to have to pay anyone and thought they could get by with special teamers? This is unbelievable.

I wish someone would compare the birds drafts to the packers, steelers, ravens drafts of recent years

Given the fact that league wide only about 30% draft choice make it, the eagles have done quite well. It’s naive to expect a high ratio of hits. The first round alone is a 50/50 proposition.

I have calculated (including players who were successful while starting) 33 decent picks out of 107 Players. Thats a 3.24 ratio. So history shows that we will draft at least 3 decent players in this up coming draft.

Fans should be outraged over Kolb debacle. What a wasted 5 years of a #1 pick. Instead of taking a potential starting positional player who would be contributing right now and coming into his prime we have a backup qb who has basically played a few games over 3 years and needs to be moved. Then we have to possibly wait a few years for the draft pick we get for Kolb to develop. What was the point?

To Vricchini
Did you count players like RB M Booker who the Eagles traded a 3rd Round pick to the Dolphins and CB E Hobbs who the Eagles traded 2 5th Round to the PAtriots for .. This should increase and help you Ratio #’s …

Wow what terrible drafts. One all-pro in all them years. Shawn Andrews. Last 5 years. 2006. Avant 3rd down reciever, Patterson average. 2007 Bradley, Celek very avg(a dime a dozen). Kolb wasted pick. 2008 1 damn player in whole draft, home run with Jackson, rest of 2008 draft terrible. 2009 Maclin very avg not dynamic, you throw 50 times a game alot of recievers will catch 70 balls a year. McCoy is dynamic, home run. Fokou 7th round pick good value but still avg player. 2010 lol look at that draft and show me 1 stud. What a terrible draft. 2 great players in 5 years is unacceptable. Jackson and McCoy.

If Im Jeffery Lurie Im raiding Pitsburgh, Baltimore, Greenbay, New Englands or KC scouting department to run my player perssonnel department. Go to there draft boards and look at how many all-pros or future all pros them teams put out. Look what that Scott Paoli did once he got to KC. That team has young studs everywhere. All draft picks.

Agree Dag,
You can add the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Bucs to this list of recent excellent drafts and effective Front Office Personnel
TB Bucs has as much young talent at the SKills Position to rival any team in the NFL
QB J Freeman, RB L Blount, WR’s M WIlliams, A Benn, S Stroughter, D Brisco, TE Winslow Jr and along the DL with high draft picks of McCoy and Price in last years draft… They add a DE, and Secondary help, this will be a team to contend with for the next 5-6 years..

09′ is best overall. I’ve said this before and i’ll say it again. He doesnt get it right this year and get some stunners and killers on d this year in the draft he has to go.I’m a big A.R. guy. Much respect for his teachings and guidance to these players in season. We’re a respected team no doubt…but i need this group to hold a title. We’re in the top 3 in the league with regards to offensive firepower. The bigboys up front will be much improved this season with Mudd in here a healthy and hungry J.J.. I think that improves. That leaves the D,get some rooks in here and coach up the vets and finish the deal.

The Bucs talent isnt even close to what we have at the skills spots Paul. WTF have any of those players done thats on par with the Birds. Winslow…ok. But dont give me Blount over Mccoy.Any of those wides got nothing on Snax and Jmac.Avant is top 3 slot machines in the league.

Andy’s overall draft grade. C+. Has made some moves in FA to save his a$$ and get the team to 5 ships. One big Ship appearance. But i need more with regards to drafting ends. And how many times do we have to get sonned by a team with nasty linebackers before they realize you can draft them high and not feel bad.Never understood there b.s. philoshy on that.

As far as the number of players I can say that 2010 was the best draft class in AR’s era…….. Not because there’s a ton of ? marks but theres a lot of upside to Clayton, Chaney, Colemen, Lindley, Riley Cooper, and Brandon Graham, and Nate Allen….. Depending on how they recover from a serious injury…. Mike Kafka is ? able……. But I feel as if he’ll be productive as a back-up……

Bryan Smith was a serious Reach, Daniel Teo’neism was a terrible reach, Billy Mcmullen HAHAHAHAHA, Fred-ex was over-night trash, Matt McCoy was a reach and a bum as well, Victor Abimari what were they thinking…… Anyone from ND is just as spare tire ready to pop……… Useless……. Chris Gocong Aka SoLONG couldnt cover a mercedes benz in a hail storm……. Winston Swift Justice wasnt worth the 2nd rd but had a great few seasons at USC but he’s been solid if not OK…….. Kevin Kolb could be our ticket after all…….. Once he’s traded………

Paulman-”All team GM’s and Coaches are going to follow the Owners orders and wishes”

and what about the 5 teams that were fined for talking to players? i want a responce to this…. I gave you all the info you needed yesterday. If you say that now that they have been busted they will stop ill laugh.

My main point on this Paul is that the teams are trying to hold strong enough together to keep the NFLPA* at bay yet they are still trying to make their own team better. I would imagine that….

1) The birds are shopping Kolb to teams. Remember… they dont have to talk to Kolb about it. He is under contract next year. The new team can work out a long term deal when the lockout is fully over.

2) Fact-FA players are free to talk to teams and so…. agents are calling teams and saying…hey… you want my player?? Teams (as has been reported by PFT) have been saying “we wont talk about FA’s”. But (here comes my opinion)- I would bet that they say something like…. call me in a couple weeks please.

You obviously don’t follow about talent around the NFL, Erock
Tampa Bay Bucs has some of the most talented young players at the skills posistions in the NFL.. This has been stated by most NFL Observors

Let’s take a look deeper and check some Stats out

QB Freeman 291-474 for 61.5% 3,451 yds 25 TD 6 Int, 28 Scaks 96 Rating
QB VIck 233-372 for 62.6% 3,018 yds 21 TD 6 Int, 34 Sacks 100 Rating

RB L Blount 201 for 1007 yards 5.0 avg, 6 TD’s 2 Fumbles lost
RB L McCoy 207 for 1080 yds 5.2 avg 7 TD’s 1 Fumble lost

WR M WIlliams 65 catches for 964 yds 15 yd avg 11 TD’s (Rookie year)
WR A Benn 25 Catches for 400 yds 16 yd avg 2 TD’s (Rookie year)
TE K Winslow 66 Catches for 730 yds 11 yd avg 5 TD’s (finally healthy)

WR D-Jax 47 Catches for 1,056yds 22.5 avg 6 TD’s
WR J Maclin 70 Catches for 964 yds 13.8 avg 10 TD’s
TE B Celeck 42 Catches for 511 yds 12.2 avg 4 TD’s

As you can see, TB Bucs has some talent that should only improve as they all gain more experience, but as a NFL fan, to not acklowledge their production and talent at such a young age and 3 of them finishing their rookie years at the NFL is just plain being ignorant
Ages – Bucs – Freeman 24, Blount 24, Williams 23, Benn 22, Winslow 27
Eagles – Vick 30, McCoy 22, D-Jax 24, Maclin 22 Celek 26

This list is a prime example of two things

1) what an outstanding draft organization and plan this team has had under this current HC and
2) the absolute ignorance of the large majority of Eagle fans

Daggolden – you are quickly entering the ‘gold standard’ of foolish posters – better to let people think you are an idiot then repeatedly post nonsense and confirm it. If you want to comment on the number of All-Pros drafted – go team by team and confirm the number each team has of drafted All-Pros so we have a comparison – for example – isn’t/wasn’t Raheem Block an All Pro, wasn’t Derrick Burgess an All pro – didn’t the eagles draft them?? Does all Pro mean you need to be named to what post-season team to be named to that? Didn’t/Wasn’t WestBrook an All-Pro….

The simplicity with which some poster function amazes me – the Eagles have one of the highest percentages of drafted players on current roster – one of the highest percentages of games started by drafted players, one of the highest percentages of resigning drafted players to follow on contracts, they typically have one of the highest number of picks each draft.

Think about it – in the last 4 years there have been 128 first round draft picks – how many have gpone on to ‘All Pro’ status?

You heard it here first……Brian Dawkin’s leadership and play still have not been replaced.

Nate Allen was not injured when Britt molested him and Hobbs so don’t give me the injury excuse.

Nate Allen is a center fielder that reads but get moved by good QB’s regularly and he gets run over more than any safety I’ve ever witnessed in Eagles green.

I don’t care if Dawk lost 10 steps…He’s still better than every safety on our team and he’s almost 40.

I’m waiting for this team to let a good player go and actually replace him with a better player…

I know some will give the Mcnabb replaced by Vick as one example but before you go there…He was replaced by Kevin Kolb and if Vick would not have covered the organization’s rear end last year Reid would have been exposed.

When are we going to actually improve on the defensive players we decide to let go instead of paying them their worth?

We had to break the bank for Asante Samuel because our drafting sucked.

Earl Thomas was right there for the taking and we draft Brandon Graham..to go cheaper with Nate Allen…when it should have been the other way around.

We should have drafted Earl Thomas and got the best DE available in the 2nd Round.

I hope you guys are prepared for the Eagles to draft another question mark with the 1st pick Saturday.

Their track record shows if the player we actually need is available they’ll draft someone from another position no one is expecting just to show their smarter than everyone else.

Tom Modrak…we need you!!!!!

– Paul – yeah, falcons and bucs had good recent drafts – BECAUSE THEY SUCKED and had high picks. When’s the last time the Eagles where (orriginally) given a high pick – it hasn’t happened much at all becuase Reid’s teams make the playoffs. That HAS to be factored in when comparing drafts of other teams… cmon…

paulman

I disagree Schiller,
The best teams in recent years, like the Colts,Steelers,Packers,Ravens,Giants,PAtriots,Chargers typically have
later 1st Round picks in the draft, but just do a better job of scouting and selecting the best players avaialable that fit their schemes..

Also on Reid, he went from #23 up to #11 and selected B Graham when a baigger need and higher rated players in SAfety Earl Thomas was still on the BOard,, Graham was most likely going arounf the 18th-22nd range and not the #13 and the Eagles overpaid to move up further than they had to
This 1st Round Trade last year ruined their remainder of their Draft I believe for they load their 3rd ROund Selections, and then had to trade down from their 2nd to gaine some picks back and ended up with more 4th/5th Round picks then the multiple picks the origianlly had in the 2nd and 3rd of last year.. They blew a great opportunity last year..

Ok Paul, but I said nothing about teams drafting low or the best teams. I said something about your comments on the Falcons and Bucs who had high draft picks. How you disagree with my statments about ‘a’ when your reasoning for disagreeing isn’t about ‘a’ at all – it’s about ‘d’?

I agree paul, I posted something similar on a different article… steelers pick high every year and rarely if ever miss, and they don’t move up or down they stay and pick great everytime.

The eagles picked well last yr but did ruin things when not taking earl thomas… but this was my point on another post, the eagles never go with the sure thing they wanna be smarter than everyone else and do smthin out of the box… and that’s all andy bc his playcalling mirrors that same type of mentality

Paul – you say graham was most like going in 18-22 range – Dude, predicting for fun is one thing, but here you’re using pure speculation in the context of an argument. You have no idea where he was theoretically ‘likely to go’. That’s BS. You can’t cite Reid for moving up too high to get a guy based off of weak speculative BS from a year ago. AND it goes against your comments earlier (yesterday I believe) that Graham was coveted by NE and NY and that the Eagles had to go up to swipe him. Man….sometimes you amaze me…

schiller

April 27, 2011 12:09 pm

j hart – and you define ‘a sure thing’ as what? You really believe ‘sure thing’s exist in the NFL draft? I say that’s f-in ridiculous based off of history, concensus observation and common sense!

Earl Thomas was just as likely to get the injury Graham got in his rookie year – can you reasonable argue against that!? So neither was more of a sure thing. Same goes for injury probability with Allen and Thomas. And we don’t kow that Thomas won’t have a career threatening injury this year, and Allen won’t come back healthy and play well. That’s the problem with making major judgements about drafts – it’s poor reasoning at this stage. 5-10 years from now, we can look back and evaluate Graham/Allen/Thomas situation, but now, it’s presumptuous.

Well one thing is for sure, The Eagles hanve some picks and ammo to work with for this upcoming Draft.. I am excited and believe the GM Roseman and the Scouting Dept have done their homework to bring in more quality players who also happen to be quality people.. They have a great opportunity to improve this team where it needs it the most and that’s in the trenches.. If they can solidify the RCB spot with a high pick or better yet, thru Free-Agency and the add 1 Starter to the OL and a nice contributor at DE & LB positions, then I will consider this a Successful Draft..
When you look at the metrics and measureables of all these talented players, therer typically is very little difference, it’s the Coachability, the Smarts, the Work ethic that have to find in these Athletes and of course, they have to fit your “system” to be able to contribute and excell at the NFL level.. If this was Easy to do, there would be 200 All-Stars every year coming into the NFL and we all know that this is not the case.. If you can get 4-5 good solid players and then maybe another 1-2 thru Free-Agency and then strike gold with a free-agent undrafted players every year, this is how you build a consistent, long term successful team.. Roseman had a good start with last years draft and now with another year under his belt, should be able to add to it… Let’s hope he and his staff are up to the challenge..

I know enough about talent in the NFL to know any scout would rate our skill guys above the Bucs. So in short…your full of sh!t and use stats as your measure. They are FLAT OUT not better then our skill guys. Find 3 dudes on here who agree with you? If not…your friggin full of sh!t. So just admit you made a bad judgement and move on.

Every team at the top and bottom have made serious draft mistakes. Ours are more magnified cause we dont have a title yet. Theres coaching setbacks that are equal to our failure in the draft. No?

Songs – your memories are just that – they have absolutley no basis in reality – Dawkins has been below average at best… you can’t keep comparing every player to Brian Dawkins in his Prime – the Brian Dawkins last year couldn’t cover a baby with a blanket, all you had to do was watch post game films and see the other team scoring. In other words BOTH (and throw Coleman in there) safeties we had last year were better then 2011 Dawkins Not 2003 Dawkins, 2011 Dawkins. But then again in history only about 2 or 3 safeties were better then 2003/4 Dawkins And if Dawkins was such a phenominal leader – why didn’t he take care of the TOwens and Dmac issue??

and I can show you a great picture of Jeremy Shockey coming down with a game winning touchdown pass and patting Dawkins on the head like he was a little kid, there are tons of films available of Plexico Burress treating Sheldon Brown (and I guess that would make Dawkins the free safety) like he was his prison girlfriend.

This crap happens all throughout the NFL – Pman you mentioned San Diego – OK lets use them

San Diego let one of the all time great running backs in the NFL Tomlinson walk in free agency – Tomlinson signed with the Jets for 2 years at 5.2 million – he rushed for 917 yards when he was supposed to be the back up running back – now this brilliant Charger team (the one that let Drew Brees walk away and had the GM piss off the starting left tackle and Vincent Jackson) drafted Ryan Matthews at 26.65 million – 15 mil gaurantedd who only rushed for 678 yards.

I’m not beating up on graham but he did get benched and old man parker started over him so obviously he wasn’t getn it done and you can check his stats too uh nothing to write home about. I’m not here to say that graham won’t be great but berry and thomas were in a class of there own everyone knew it, they were both sure things at safety, anyone can get injured that wasn’t my original arguement… mine was the birds don’t pick players that they know and everyone else knows are great… injuries can happen to anyone obviously

To Schill
Looking back over my notes again from last year
Giants had the 15th pcik
Steelers had the 18th pick,
Falcons had the 19th pick
Patriots had the 27th pick
These teams were all very much interested in Brandon Graham from multiple reports, interviews, from many Draft observors and reporters..

If you recall, I wanted to Eagles to actually draft C/G Maurkice Pouncey last year and got ridiculed for the month leading up to the Draft and all he did was make All-Pro his Rookie Season and will most likely do so for the next 8-10 years if he remains healthy… (yes I am predicted that Pouncey will be an All-Pro for the next 8-10 years so put it down)
I aslo stated that if Eagles stayed at #23 last year and if Pouncey was gone already, then the EAgles were best to sit tight and Draft CB D McCourtey from Rutgers and many said he wasn;t worthy of played versus mediocre taIent in the Big East Conference, and again all he did was become an All-Pro in his Rookie Season for the Patriots (which I admit was beyond my expecations for him to do in his 1st year but liked his game and thought he would made a good starter meaterial at CB which I though was a need for the Eagles and still do his year too…)

j, they did pick a player that ‘they know and everyone else knows are great’ – that was the concensus read on Graham last year. That’s a fact. They did excatly what you said, just not at the saftey position. And the bottom line is winning in the playofs – neither Berry, Thomas OR Allen/Ghram’s team won the superbowl, and our saftey’s had nothing to do with Vick throwing that pick that lost the game for us in the playoffs.

So otherwise, this is just you disagreeing with the pick they made (and didn’t make), and judging it too soon. Yeah Berry/Thomas’s stats out performed Graham – bar none – in their rookie season. But that’s in hindsight.

For them to move up for graham wasn’t that smart… they should of picked thomas which again proved to be more of a need. There are lots of talented Skill Players around the NFL so let’s not overrate this Eagle WR/Skills Group again this summer like the Philly Media and it’s fans did last season, and just like they did the summer before with it was the O/Line (with the Andrew Sisters) that was the Best in the NFL before they even played 1 game or even practiced together…

I like DE B Graham and think he will end up a very good player for many years
with the Eagles (Probably more of a rotational players than an everydown player) which is ok since the Eagles and really most Teams in the NFL noe employ 4-5 DE’s on their rosters and rotate them in and out..I will always think they gave up 1 too many 3rd Round Draft Picks to get him but that’s ancient history now.
The biggest area that I was disappointed in was in his Conditioning,
and I don’t mean his weight or strength, but his Cardio-Vascular Stamina was horrible for a top Athlete to have..I have never seen a player get so pooped out so quickly while on the field (in 3-4 plays) like he did early last year.. I know he will work on it to improve his breathing, stamina, and it’s all part of becoming a Professional Football player wo he will make the adjustments, but his lack of stamina and conditioning early on was and still is a concern of mine for you cannot make plays if you are gassed every few plays for you will find youself on the sidelines.

NavyEagle did you ever think the reason why the Eagles cant pass protect, cant run the ball on 3rd and 1. Cant cover anyone or stop the run is because of all the bad draft picks. hmmmmmmm. Westrook never was all pro. Burgess and Brock/ great personnell moves. They were all pros for other teams? We counting that now?. The Philadelphia Eagles have had 2 all pros in 12 years. Shawn Andrews and Dawkins. Maybe Akers. They have highest number of drafted players on there roster. WTF does that mean? They have a bunch of drafted players who cant play is what it means. Michael Vick saved this team last year from being 5-11 thats what it means. NavyEagle did you think of them sayings all by yourself. Your so clever and original.lol

dag – those statements are not true about the Eagles in the past two years. With McCoy, Weaver, Schmidt, VICK, Harrison, they’ve been MUCH better at short yardage. They have also stopped the run MUCH more effectively. And can’t cover? Yeah, last year was bad, but before that, not ture.

Schiller, I like allen but who’s sold on lindley? Coleman is a rotational player anf was out of place a lot last yr but thats correctable… I just feel that they reached for graham there and should of nabbed Thomas then took care of the DE later on… when you have a chance to draft a berry or thomas you gotta get him, all that work to move up and you draft graham over thomas? Let’s hope it works out down the line…

I answered your Question Stevo,
So some teams were talking to players when they weren;t supposed to, so what, anyone surprised..The NFL has clamped down and will reprimand, fine and possibly suspend employees and may even yank Draft picks away if they find anyone in the Front Office who doesn’t abide the “no contact” rule..
To this day, there still has not been any “Player Movement” and there won’t be for at least another week to 10 days, I stand by my statements..

RT- in other posts ive said rt/rg and i forgot to do that on this one. BUT- i think if they can get a stong RG, RT would be less of a need. But im fine either way. They need to get1 in FA too when that happens.

DE- I dont want to see the birds draft a DE in RD 1 this year. They do not have a good track record of drafting DE’s in later rounds (or in early rounde either). They need to get more production out of what we already have.

LB- Id like a LB… I want a big fat monstor BUT….. in todays NFL, 3 starting CB’s are more important. AND…. the birds O is such that they should be playing with a lead most of the time. That means….. a starting LB is less important.

But paulman- that wasnt what you stated. You said….. “All team GM’s and Coaches are going to follow the Owners orders and wishes”. And i showed you that they havent.

the larger point is that I believe that the owners are all in on it. The birds are (like prolly all others) trying to talk to players while saying at the same time they cant.

The larger point where you and i disagree is that the NFL is still running…. the birds are still trying to trade Kolb…. the birds are still letting FA’s know they want them.

Navy,
I agree with just about all your points. The Eagles compare well with most teams in the NFL. They have done a great job in getting younger over the last season or two. They do however seem to have a difficult time on the defensive side of the ball especially the D end position with lots of high draft pick misses.

j hart – re lindley/colmeman/allen – sure, nobody should be sold on ANY of them. But, I know I’m a broken record… YOU ARE MISTAKEN TO EVALUATE A DRAFT AFTER 1 YEAR. That’s such common knowledge but so many fans ignore it. 1 rookie year is a terrible frame of reference for judging an NFL player. Period. That’s a fact.

But you’re doing that right now man….

They are and were supposed to, but obviously some didn;t the bigger point is the Goal of the Owners from Day 1 is to limit and proliong Player Movement for as long as possible until a new Settlement is reached or bya COurt Order..
Theat’s been their goal and so far it has worked since no players or agents have signed any deals with anyone…How is a GM going to go against the wishes and instructions of fella that owns the team and pays his Salary. Is a GM or person of authority going to jeopardize his career for wanting to talk to a player or agent who may improve his team… C’ Mon, Steveo, you are all mixed up on this and not seeing the bigger picture …
