“It’s being seriously considered,” one Sixers official said.. “We know the history. We know the ups and downs. But we’re also aware of what (Iverson) can do and that he’s needed here. We simply can’t just ignore the upside he’d bring. Not with our situation.”
According to Smith, as of Friday night head coach Eddie Jordan was on board with bringing Iverson back as was assistant coach and formert teammate Aaron McKie.
There seems to be quite a few Sixers sources telling Smith that it’s going to happen and it looks like Iverson is going to be a 76er again.
Do you want him back?
While I was a huge supporter of Iverson back in the day, I’m not sure what this accomplishes.¬† He can’t do what he used to do anymore.¬† It used to be that no one could run with him and he’d find a way to score.¬† He used to be able to put the entire team on his back (whether they liked it or not) and drop 55 on an opponent.¬† That simply isn’t the case anymore.¬† If it was, he’d be on another team.
The Sixers are 5-11.¬† They have a bunch of athletes, some of which aren’t necessarily good basketball players.¬† They are in a brand new system that they’ve tried to learn for a whopping 16 games.¬† This team is panicking.¬† Iverson is a temporary patch and will not help this team get Jordan’s Princeton system down.¬† I actually think the worst thing that could happen to this team is that they win a few more games.¬† They need the higher draft pick to really make some changes.
Jordan’s system is predicated on passing and shooting.¬† This team doesn’t really have players to fit that system as it is and Iverson is probably even less of a fit if that’s possible.¬† I understand that the Sixers want to sell tickets, but at this point in his career, does he really have the ability to do that?¬† Perhaps, and I guess we’ll have to see.
Let’s be clear:¬† This is not an anti-Allen Iverson rant.¬† This is about what the Sixers are and where they want to be.¬† Iverson should be coming off the bench for that (as G. said the other night on WIP) Vinny “Microwave” Johnson instant offense for a contender.¬† Philly isn’t a good fit for him either at this point.¬† This is a franchise in disarray.¬† They have a new system.¬† They have players that don’t fit that system.¬† They have a star, big-money acquisition who is hurt and doesn’t fit with the players around him, we saw that last year.¬† And now the want to add an aging superstar who doesn’t fit in with any of this.¬†
Ironically, when I read Smith’s report, all I could hear was Tom McGinnis’ voice in my head saying, “Are you kidding me?!”¬†
