There was a time when the Eagles were madly in love with their franchise quarterback Donovan McNabb.
That's no longer the case and hasn't been the case for a while, but they don’t have a viable option, so they’re probably going to have to make like they love him and give him some of what he wants.
I talked to a league source today and he told me that the Eagles decision-makers feel McNabb has taken them as far as he can. No longer do they have the glowing confidence in him, but the circumstances predicate that they bring him back and give him much of what he wants.
You can see that they’re not rushing to do it.
In fact last year when the team was struggling and McNabb was playing poorly, the word around the Nova Care complex was “at least we won’t have to be bothered with the McNabb nonsense any more”.
They’re just plain tired of his act.
When the team went on its run, all the post-McNabb plans had to be torn up. With McNabb back in the driver's seat, hey rallied to win two playoff games and make it to the NFC Championship game for the fifth time.
It has put McNabb in a powerful negotiating position esecially when you juxtapose his resume with the uncertain play of his supposed replacement, Kevin Kolb.
McNabb knows he’ll probably never be in as strong of a position again. That’s why he and his agent Fletcher Smith are so eager to sit down and talk to the Birds. It's also probably why the Eagles are dragging their feet.
The focused public attention on this much anticipated meeting is going to put pressure on the Eagles to have it sooner rather than later.
