Nnamdi Asomugha’s first day of practice at Lehigh University was a success. Once he stepped onto the field, he was greeted by the Philly faithful in the form of a thundering roar of cheers.
Clearly, Asomugha is already a fan favorite, and deservingly so.
He’s one of the best corners in the game, and for a Philadelphia defense that struggled against high-powered passing attacks last season, his presence on the field is bound to greatly improve the unit
With three Pro-Bowl cornerbacks all in the same secondary, there’s going to be some confusion as to how to please everyone. But it’s a good problem to have, and Andy Reid, along with defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, have already discussed their plans for Asomugha and the star-studded secondary.
“It was day one really for that type of thing. Juan [Castillo] has a pretty good idea though what he’s going to do and how he’s going to use them. You saw that when we started the team period and blitzed, he came out with the three corner look. It gives you quite a bit of flexibility and all three are really good football players,” said Reid.
At first, Asomugha was seen lined up over the tight end in his first time out on the field today. The Eagles have allowed the opposing tight ends to get free in the middle of the field over the past couple of seasons, but with Asomugha showing that he is willing to take on that role, there won’t be too many tight ends breaking out for big games.
Simply put, Asomugha can, and will, play anywhere on the field.
“He played some inside in the nickel over dime situation, and then he played outside at the corner spot. He can do either-or and he wants to do that,” said Asomugha.
His team-first mentality is what makes him such a huge asset to the team. With Asante Samuel still on the team, and no deal in the foreseeable future, there will be three highly-talented cornerbacks all vying for playing time. Samuel is the least likely of the three to play in the slot, which means either Asomugha or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will have to take up the nickel spot.
Both players have already expressed their interest in playing the role for the benefit of the team.
But Asomugha is the best man-coverage cornerback in the game today, so I expect him, as he should be, to line up opposite Samuel.
“When he and I talked – he was in a system and listen, it’s been very successful for him at Oakland in a system where they play man coverage,” said Reid. “Al Davis loves man coverage. He recruits players there and drafts players that play man coverage and that guy was the best in the business at it.”
Covering the opposition’s number one option will be Asomugha’s main job, but because of his physicality, the Eagles can use him anywhere on the field and allow Rodgers-Cromartie to take the outside.
“But now [Asomugha]’s going to be exposed to all these different coverage’s and he welcomes that, that’s what he wants to do; and then, he wants to be moved around and put inside and do that. He’s expressed that to me when we talked,” said Reid.
With so many options in the secondary, Reid and Castillo will showcase a lot of different looks to the opposing quarterback, which will make it hard for the opposition to gauge this defense.
There is no way that they paid this guy all that $$$ to play 5ç & 10ç. He has played the same side of the field his entire career, & is arguably the best in the NFL. IMHO, Samuel don’t make the weekend. It’s a spoil of riches to have. Trade him so you can fill a need & get more picks. Also it gives you the flexibility to give long term contracts to Vick & DJax. It’s smart business. The Birds ain’t stupid.
Wonder if Asmo can be the Red-Zone WR the Eagles need and maybe can also kick long field goals over 40 yards to take a little pressure off the Rookie Kicker for he has a strong leg too … .
Asmo is bored playing the same position. I truly believe he relishes the fact he is gonna play ALL over the field.Thats a brilliant move by Castille. TEs days of killing us is over. DRC or Asmo definetly is drawing that assignment for good TE teams. Asmo will line up all over the formation, blitzing dropping etc. Also the best safety on the team is Coleman. I told you that last year. I look for him to push to pro bowl status befor all is said and done.
The reason Nnamdi want to be like charles woodson and in college he was that type of player.. Hes bored just making 20 tackles per season, and last year grean bay had 3 high level corners… and the play 100 percent of the snaps 98 percent of the snap and 89 percent of the snaps.. you think DRC is going to complain if he plays 89 percent of the snaps.. come on ..to deal with the saints, falcons, greenbay, the top 3 teams have a tone of passing weapons. the league is changing.. the eagles know what theyre doing for once
DD, I disagree. I think the Birds keep Asante this season, take their shot, and assuming he has his usual boatload of interceptions this season, trade him before the draft next year. By then T Lindley or Marsh should be ready to step in and play a larger role next season. You head into the draft with, hopefully, a Lombardi trophy, 2 1st round picks, 2 2nd round picks, a 3rd and two fourths. Gives the Eagles a shot to load up on young talent for years to come. I do not think the Birds can afford to trade away such a talent when they are all-in this season.
I agree 100% with AS,
The only way that Samuel gets traded is if he went to Coach AR and requested to be trraded which I don’t see happening.. Next Off-Season is a different story and we can all worry about that next year
daggolden.. I agree coleman is now the best saftey on the team and i was hoping he would be moved to free saftey and Jarret strong.. Nate Allen is soft.He was run over by ryan torrain the redskins back up running back last year and others.. Hes coming off an injury and though he has size he doesnt use it.. I was hoping he wouldnt even be back this early..Kurt coleman deserves to start he gained muscle and is ready to start and hes a play maker he can play free saftey.. once jarret learns the scheme we willalll see what he can do and that HIT
Good stuff fellas
I will say tho, Nate Allen will be a very good player, he is smooth
Stop asking for the world when it comes to rookies
Not many rookies start on the Eagles, and he did a solid job in his role.
He will basically be our “Ed Reed,” meaning he is our center fielder (not the Phillies, for the Eagles!)
He has the corners, and we have Coleman (and Jarrett) who I agree is good as well.
We have the WRs and TEs on lock with our corners, and whoever is the SS (Coleman right now) will help against the run and some tight end.
Allen plays center field, and the d-line attacks. Cole finally has help.
All the LBs have to do is play there lanes, and we have an elite defense.
The offense speaks for itself, we will easily average 24+ again (last year 27.4)
So I’m glad we’re going out of our box by signing these guys, and allowing Asomugha to use his talent, as well as our other 2 CBs and down the roster.
I’m lovin’ this, can’t wait for August 11, our first preseason game against the Ravens and Coach Harbaugh!
Some NFL News around the League today
Titans CB C Finnegan walk out of Training CAmp upset about his contract status (he is in his the final year of his deal which pays him apporx $3.5 Million, not sure what he’s complaining about.. Play ball and finish your contract and move on next year if your that unhappy.. just like D-Jax except Finnegan is making a lot more $$$ than D-Jax) .
RB M Bush re-signs with the Oakland Raiders as expected
QB D McNabb signs a 1 year Deal with the Vikings for $5 MIllion with another $2 Million in incentives for personal and team stats
NO Saints sign Center O Kruetz from the Bears
So im hearing the defense looks NASTY out there, the offense will eventually catch up when everyone gets back desean maclin mainly but this will be great for vick, him having to throw to these jason avants and chad halls among others… He ll only get better…
Also, Marty today was talking about the final step that Vick has to take and he said blitz recognition is included in that next step, i mentioned this during the season and after the season that he had to work on that, if hes gonna watch a QB he should watch Rodgers because hes a genius at the line, he can recognize a blitz a mile away… And i believe i heard he said that hes been watching tape of rodgers which is good… they be battling each other for the next 5-6 years for SB visits, they are both All World QBs, 2 of the best in the business. But you gotta give Rodgers the crown as the best right now.. but Vick is on his heels and if he wins it all this year will be the best in the NFL, yes over manning and brady too…
Another point, i mentioned in a different post that the eagles have installed in the offense HOT ROUTES similar to what green bay has with rodgers… what it does is have specific routes for when teams blitz you, there quick routes that require you to get the ball out fast, so Vick will have all control at the line… it wont be the responsibility of the center anymore it be up to Vick to make the proper adjustments, similar to what peyton manning does at the line probably less dramatic though lol … I love hearing this though, andy brought in Mudd and now has changed his philosophy…
Sounds good JOn,
The big thing for those Top QB’s (Manning,Brady,Rogers) is the pre-snap reads that they see and adjust too..Vick can react to the BLitz better than most beccause of his atlhleticim but if he ends up just scrambling, he’s kinf of let th eDefense off the hook.. The Other QB shift their protection and then are able to find an open Recivers (hot routes) who can then turn a 6-8 Yard pass into a 20 Yard easy gain sinec the team is 1 less player in their Secondary. This is level that QB Vick needs to work on and get to, for he will get blizted and the key is to make the Defenses pay for it when they do which means they become less likley to do it if they get caught for big plays when they do..
This is another reason why it’s important for D-JAx and hopefuilly Maclin soon to be able to practice for a lot has to do with the WR,breaking their routes and being aware what’s happening too.. Way too many times last year I see D-JAx and MAclin running doownfield with their heads down and havinh no clue that their QB was getting blitzed.. All of them need to do a better job of this .. .
