Eagles Have Options At WR

Last week, as I stood watching the progress of Eagles rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin I couldn’t help but think about some scenarios which could develop if he continues to shine.

Right now, Reggie Brown seems to be the odd man out here in Philly at the wide receiver position.

That's not a done deal though, not until he's either traded or released.  Remember how quickly injuries can change things.

Kevin Curtis' first job will be staying healthy.  Hopefully he won't have any more problems with the sports hernia surgery and his groin.

He is slated to be the starter opposite DeSean Jackson.  Head coach Andy Reid will work in rookie Jeremy Maclin to allow him to make some plays with his ability to run with the ball after the catch.

I've been so impressed with the way Maclin has improved at the mini camps that I could see him doing much more than being a gadget (screens and reverses) guy.

On third downs they could have Curtis lining up in the slot and Maclin outside, or they could bring in Jason Avant and have him operating out of the slot.

There could also be times when you would see four receivers in the game with two receivers at the slot, either Avant and Curtis or Maclin.  The receiver not in the slot would be at the outside receiver spot.

Remember that Curtis was an outstanding slot receiver during his years with the St. Louis Rams. I could see Curtis lining up more and more at the slot position if Maclin proves he can handle that outside spot.

Avant and Hank Baskett have specific roles cut out for them in this offense.  They both do a good job of special teams which is very important in their roles as back ups.

I emphasize that this is the way things are set up to work at the present moment, but it could change.
