A team source told the Inquirer's Bob Brookover that Westbrook's upcoming ankle surgery is more serious than people are making it sound.
"I'm just concerned that it is being underplayed," the source said . "It's a lot more than a little spur and it's much more than the knee arthroscopy he had (in February)."
As Brookover correctly points out, we won't really know how serious it is until Dr. Meyerson goes in there and does his thing. But I don't think it needs to be said that this is a situation that bears monitoring big time.
I've been telling anyone that will listen for a while now that the Eagles are very thin at RB. Westbrook is elite, but also gets banged up. I think LeSean McCoy will be fine at some point, but if he can't pick up the blitz, he can't play much. I think Weaver will be able to contribute if called upon, but I don't want him as a full-time tailback (unless he's great at it, in which case, I'm all for it). And I'm sure Lorenzo Booker is a nice guy, but my dad is a nice guy and I don't want him playing RB for the Eagles.
I'd like to see he Eagles add another somewhat capable back to the stable. There are a couple names out there like Edgerrin James and Duece McAllister, and I don't know what they have left in the tank, but if they have to Chris Warren it up a bit until Westbrook is 100% then so be it.
Is Darnell Autry available?
