We’re finally here. The lockout is but a distant memory, and the first game is in this books. While there were some who predicted that the Eagles’ first test would be a close contest and could even end in an upset, the game on Sunday afternoon was anything but, as the Eagles were able to pull away from the Rams for an 18-point win.
In this 31-13 win over St. Louis, Michael Vick was the star of the show.
The guy just flat out made some Houdini plays out on the field, turning something into nothing at crucial times. But for all the deep bombs and scrambles Vick made, and for all the rushes he escaped; for all the sacks he eluded, it looked like Vick had his mindset on playing in a more conservative manner than he usually does but I think he needs to go further. He didn’t take many chances of getting hit when he ran with the football and he only made a throw or two that was in danger of being picked off.
Mind you, Vick is still a phenomenally, dangerous game changer, who can take off at anytime from the pocket, so a more “conservative” style for him is different than it is for any other quarterback in the NFL. But nevertheless you could sense the battle going on in Vick’s mind between trying to give each play time as he waited in the pocket, while at the same time not forgetting his ability to run with the football.
He had to avoid the temptation of running on every play when he considered the group that was playing in front of him. The Eagles’ offensive line is young and inexperienced and we have already talked in length about how Philadelphia’s pass protection would be very suspect come the regular season.
Vick has learned during his time in Philadelphia that the easiest way to deal with pass rush pressure is by getting rid of the ball early. This is an area of his game, which the quarterback has truly been trying to improve on from a year ago. He goes to the line of scrimmage wanting to read the coverage or blitz and get rid of the football.
When the blitz came for Vick yesterday, he looked first of all to get rid of the football but when he saw that wasn’t a good option, he took off on the run. Even though Vick ran 10 times in the game, he turned down some opportunities where he had a lane open to run but he instead stood in the pocket and stayed aware of the play’s progression.
The Eagles must make an adjustment in their blocking on the right side of their line. The quarterback and his coaches must find a way for him to see that defensive back blitzing from his blindside. Former Eagles safety Quintin Mikell forced him to fumble on one backside blitz, and he was run down another time with a similar blitz.
Still, I want to see Vick get more conservative with his approach. I want to see him get his run attempts down under five per game, if the line is doing a decent job. I don’t want him to be a statue back there because he could easily get hurt in the pocket, but I want him to stay away from taking hits and avoid turning the ball over.
Their defense is better than it was a year ago, so they don’t have to score 30 points a game. Most of the time if they reach 20 to 24 points, they’re going to win. Vick can and must keep himself healthy and stay away from turnovers.
Last year, Vick wore himself down by taking off out of the pocket and getting hit week after week, play after play. This year he needs to get better at picking up the blitz and reading blitz schemes, so he can get rid of the ball and stay healthy.
When Michael Vick throws the football, it’s a beautiful sight. He does it in such an effortless manor that the power with which the ball is actually thrown is deceiving. Vick made some great passes yesterday with that left arm, none greater than his TD pass to DeSean Jackson, but he missed his fair share of passes as well.
No player is perfect, and no player will ever be perfect in a game, but even though the score does indicate a big win by the Eagles, I was looking for Vick and the offense to capitalize more on what seemed to be a soft St. Louis secondary, but I’ll take a win and a healthy quarterback.
14-out-of-32 got the job done today, but against Atlanta, Vick will surely have to turn his game up. Next week Vick is going to hopefully cut down on the errant throws downfield and turn it up on the strikers which are on the money to his receivers. But for now though the Eagles quarterback can take his bow and be satisfied because he made the plays necessary for his team to win and he left the game healthy, that is what is always most important.
Vick’s offensive output may not have been where he will be later in the season. Especially when you consider he is learning to use his new line calling responsibilites while playing “survivor” behind this porous offensive line. I think he had a good game since we got a win and he will improve in his play as the season progresses.
it is what it is….. he’s going to get hit. We cant have it both ways. As long as he tries to get down (he slid to stay in bounds), and tries to get out of bounds at the right times….. he cant really help the rest.
Agreed to both of those commenting above me. The media will bring it up ad nauseam but there’s really nothing to discuss or change. Hopefully the line improves with time, and that’s about it.
Warmdookie? I just had to chime in because of the name man; lol. Najee Davenport might I add? “warm dookie” – I have nothing else to say man. Good job by our birds guys.
The Washington Redskins look like they finally have it together. Defense looks spectacular and Rex Grossman is looking much like Kyle Orton out in Denver. Fred Davis loss some weight and is very quick and athletic Jabar Gaffney, Armstrong and with Stallworth coming back along with a banged up declining Giants team I think the Redskins are to be reckoned with.
Calvin Johnson could be the best wide receiver to ever play the game. I dont think Revis could cover him let alone any corner in the league. #Freakofnature
Does anyone else get the impression that Serena Williams could be a better Linebacker than Clay Matthews? She has bigger shoulders and more attitude than him thats for sure.
Hey Joe Milord, please watch the game more closely next time. As the game went on, the oline started to gel together and gave Vick plenty of time in the pocket. Most of the pressure came from from blitzers that should have been chipped by either backs or receivers(ie:the play vick got drilled when avant should have chipped the blitzer).
The oline was fine yesterday considering all of the changes.
vr – I “kinda” agree about washington – yeah they looked good, but against a TERRIBLE giants team. Do you think they could do that v. our DL and CBs? Me – nope!
Sure Fred Davis looked good and Hightower looks good as well, but I’m not convinced that Washington could do anything close to what they did yesterday versus the Eagles D. And then our O…. yada yada yada….
The Giants are in some serious trouble I believe
They have 6 Defensive starters/Key players that are hurt and out
(4 for the season in CB T Thomas, CB B Johnson, MLB J Goff, DT M Austin
and no rookie CB P Amukarama, and a hurting DL J Tuck and Osi..)
They also have disgruntled players unhappy with their contracts in DL Osi
and RB A Bradshaw
They also lost 2 of QB Eli’s favorite tagets in WR S Smith and TE K Boss
and leader of that OL in CEnter Shaun O Hara who they released
They also have a revamped OL with 3 new players
They also now have to rely more on the overrated QB Eli Manning who has become a Turnover machine
I think the Giants will implode and end up like the Cowboys last year and have the wheels fall off and start real slow this season, In fact I would not be surprised if HC Couhglin makes it to Thankgsviing this year since many of the players don’t like him anyways.. I look for DC Perry Jewell to be named interim HC in his Coughlin’s place..
Oh no Schiller the skins have no chance against Eagles but im looking at it after 1 game and I must say they look capable enough to beat the cowboys… Also if you look at other teams in the NFC Cardinals, Seahawks, Vikings, Ram I think BASED ON WHAT I SAW they have a legitimate chance to out do these teams.
Paulman where do u get ur info? Ahmad Bradshaw just signed a contract extention this offseason worth 18 million guaranteed. Is he terell owens? Coughlin makes it through the season, as he signed an extention this offseason too.
I do think if there is a giant melt down then its coughlins last year as coach. Also its posible Andy Reid could be the longest coach to ever coach a team ever.. Anyone know who the longest-tenured head coach ever?
vr – agreed across the board. At this point I’m convinced that Notre Dame could beat the Cowboys – and only because of the ATROCIOUS secondary and Romo. Any college scrub QB who can toss up a hailmary can score TDs on the cowboy’s corners, and if there is 1 fast DE on the team who can scoop up a romo fumble and run it back – W for ND. (and let’s be clear here – I HATE ND – my most hated college FB team, but I’m picking on them because of that michigan game – ha).
heres what i know boys…. we are 1-0. thank God football is back.
Schiller you don’t know what you’re talking about
agree paulman, eli manning one of the most overrated qbs in the league, he needs to hit the weight room, get some athleticism, i can’t believe he’s even an nfl qb, mr. softy, what a joke, and bradford is another stiff
runtheball – I disagree. Was that a weak, unsupported slap at me because you’re sour I criticize your hate? And the birds one so you’re left to only ‘hate’ me? I think so
Redskins and Eagles will probably split their 2 games like they do almost every year regardless of who has the better team or now.. It’s always a close game
(Except for that Monday Night Massacre last Year on Monday NIght) but that was once in a lifetime perfomance and very unliklely to ever happen again
To Vrichini,
In all Sports, I think it was Walter Alston who coached the Dodgers for a very long time..Red Aurebach coached the Celtics for years and Connie Mack coached thge Philadlephia Athletics for years too…
In Football, Bud Grant coached the Vikings for a long time as did Chuck Knoll for the Steelers and don’t forget about Richie Kotite..
Schiller you don’t know what you’re talking about, just stop talking
I disagree run. You got an opinion about the Eagles/their win/the nfc east? Anything relevant here other than your hate for me?
Whats the matter Schiller? This is all you do every damn day. Even if you agree with someone you’ll find something to disagree about with. Thats all your posts are.
Run, that’s what nitwits like him, with no lives do! Go away Schill & take your butt buddy WM, with you. You argumentative, condescending, stubborn, arrogant, bastards!
Tonights fun ? Khafka or Young if Vick is injured? Khafka looked great in pre season, I had no idea he was so athletic and quick. What do you guys think? Yes, I realize that we brought Young in, lets have some fun with this one. Anyone else impressed with what they saw in Khafka?
