In Ironic Fashion, Vick Suffers A Concussion While In The Pocket

Every time Michael Vick’s name is mentioned you hear somebody talk about him taking fewer risks by being more reluctant about leaving the pocket on his frequent scrambles. In ironic fashion Vick suffered a concussion last night while standing in the pocket on a blitz and delivering the football.

Last year he had taken off most of the time when he read blitz. He stood in there last night, now he’ll miss the next game after suffering a concussion.

It was the most talked about NFL game of the weekend because Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was returning to the city where he was drafted. He was returning to the city where he had been the franchise quarterback.

Everything was going fine and the Birds were leading the Falcons until one eventful play. It was a pass play.

On the memorable play, Michael Vick dropped into the pocket and looked up Jeremy Maclin who was coming across the middle. Falcons safety William Moore was blitzing and Eagles running back LeSean McCoy stepped up to meet the blitzing safety.

Moore eluded the running back and came inside of him. Vick let the ball go. On the other side of the play was Eagles right tackle Todd Herremans battling Falcons defensive end John Abraham. Herremans was slamming Abraham to the ground as Moore grabbed Vick and slung him to the ground.

As Vick headed to the ground and his head hit into Herremans shoulder and snapped back like he had been punched. Vick went all the way down to the ground in a heap and it didn’t look good.

Vick was helped off the field after the play and we later learned the Vick had suffered a concussion on the hit. it was ironic that Vick who risks health and limb when he leaves the pocket on his amazing scrambles, gets knocked out of the game, while throwing the ball from the pocket.

Before he was knocked out of the game, Vick passed for 242 yards and two touchdowns and ran 25 yards on six carries in his return to Atlanta. He also threw an interception and fumbled a couple of times.

So far this site has taught me that Kafka sucks and Vince Young would have given us a win (Rocko) and Schiller and Navy the two bed wetters who rode me all preseason about my take on Matthews. I was the first person to step up my position which I’m usually silent about, now it’s mainstream so will you two sign on yet? Or am I still a “hater”?

Anyone have a stat on the amount of games the ave QB misses in a season or career. If Vick gets hurt later in season, would that be considered injury prone or just ave QB injuries?

will it takeAndy another ten years to realize LB position is important. Somebody should whisper in his ear it is 1/4 of a Defense

This injury was a just a freak play, it happens .. How the team and coaches responded was the story in the 4th Quarter collapse and the Defense blew this one big time.. As many of us has stated over and over again.. The LB and Safety Corp are not ready for prime time yet.. In fact, I think the Eagles LB corp as a unit may be one of the weakest in the entire NFL. The Eagles will not go very far against the top O/Coordinators and Offenses/QB’s that they will face unless some changes/upgrades are made.. ..

Atlanta exploited the weakness in the Defense, Safety and LB…point blank, that was the difference in the game. Mike getting injured, part of the game, injury prone?? No. Unless you count getting knocked out by your own teammate. This team will be 10 times better come November/December. They should’ve won that game. My starter next week, Vince Young if healthy.

Whats amazing is that Vick had those number’s and was having a bad night. That’s messed up. I think he was geeked at the prospect of sticking it to the Falcons and forgot some basics. Kafka did his job as a backup. Just a shitty loss. 2 games in there is reason to be optimistic but they need to go a long way.

Vick played a decent game. Too many turnovers. On one of the fumbles there was nothing he could do but gotta hold on to the ball. With that, he still took control of the game and we were going to win. Like paulman said that injury was a freak injury. It wasn’t even the initial hit. Just basically flung onto his own teammate. Can’t really protect against freak injuries. It’s blatantly obvious as we have been pointing out te LB cannot play the run nor cover a TE. And our safeties have been flying under the radar because all the attention was on the LBs and they were overshadowed by the CBs. But every time Atl needed a big play it often came against one of those 5 players. The Dline are beasts. They played good against the run at times but the wide formation will keep them all the ball most times. Same stuff we’ve been talking about. you just cannot have those youg lbs who aren’t that good playing behind such a wide front. Makes them look even more bad than they really are.

Please mountains out of mole hills, just becasue its your team they are the worst in the league? Yeah right. I saw plenty of highly proclaimed LB cores getting burned yesterday by less than stellar Running cores.

The highly regarded Falcon LB core was burnt alive by our run game. Once again our D sured up and was holding the Falcon run game then it got loose. Very short fields is hard to defend against a quality Offense such as Falcons.

In reality this game was ours in all but score which is really the only place it counts, I know that. you have the right to say what you want here, you guys know I don’t fault anyone for that. Still I heard guys whining about Matthews jacking up plays which he was not even in the game for, now that tells me something important about the observers mind set.

Yeah the LB core is getting burnt i know, I see, its going to be an issue in the interim, but by mid season it will be far better and servicable. Now don’t cry about my view on this an then expect your views to be respected. I see it one way, some see it another, it is what it is.

We are elite at QB, WR, becoming above avg on O-line, elite at Corner. So with all that going for us we contiue to focus on the few d-grades and paint pitures with dark hues and morbid shapes. Get real Eagle fans you are the best in the league, but you can be a picky, whinning, self entitled bunch as well. Man up we took a bad lost, a nasty blow, but the constant during the regular season which is all that matters right now is that Reid always gives us a wining show and for that reason alone I AM NOT FREAKING WORRIED AT ALL AT THIS POINT……PERIOD!!!!!!

It was a freaky game, bad lost with tons of flaws to make you red in the face, but i saw some good things and I am encouraged.

Hey Paul you are great man, but you remind me of a friend long ago, we come out of the movie theater after seeing Jurasic Park, us friends were talking about how great the movie was, and here goes the one friend “i hated it, the dinosaures looked fake, some of those actions were not realistic, people would not do this or that.’ blah blah. Yeah what he said might have made sense, but hell it was a good movie with cutting edge state of the art movie technology an he still found something to bitch about.

I had to walk away and ahead of him, I didn’t speak with him for like two hours, not becuase of his views, but rather how is dark perpective was sucking all the fun and spirit the movie had just built up. He was not expressing only is view of the movie he was being deep down dark about it.

Can yall feel me, I repsect “Keeping it real” but sometimes I just don’t buy that phrase form some people.

Hey now if you remarked about Reids trick plays I would be with you becasue that iwas just crazy I can’t figure that one out. Why you guys not bring that up that was a ligit complain.

Now after writing this short novel and saying all that…I still wish all of you comfort in the lost, a great and profitable week, and better football sunday to come.

Take care Eagle Family and as awlays “LONG LIVE THE EAGLES”

RUN, you ain’t the only one who was ripped. This team will be lucky to win 9 games. The LB’s are atrocious, the Safeties are a black hole, the coaching is flawed & predictable & the O-Line is horrific & are going to get Vick killed by game 3. All things I’ve been saying for the entire off season & I’ve been called negative, a hater, an idiot, a moron & a bandwagon fan.
To Schill, Navy & Wmonell, who is wrong & a negative hater now!? This team will be lucky to win 9 games. Teams now know their many flaws & weaknesses & the Birds don’t have the personnel to get much better. So all three of you can take your condescending, argumentative, delusional, idiotic, stepford selves & take a hike

Any one who thinks this team is elite is crazy, this team is elite at two areas, cornerback and maybe defensive line, atrocious at lb, safety, weak at offensive line, and although good receivers/backs, the play at qb is still questionable, developing situation, and we are talking about a ten year veteran, sorry, but I am not impressed with this team, and the coach must be fired

The thing that really pisses me off & angers me beyond belief, is everyone with a real brain knew what this teams off season, dire needs & priorities were. RCB, O-Line, LB & D-Line respectively. So what do the Eagles do, they got DRC, Asomugha, Jenkins & Babin which are good, but then they sign Vince Young, Ronnie Brown & Steve Smith, who they did not need! That $$$ was wasted on surplus, instead of dire needs. Maybe instead of trying to be media darlings & off season champions the front office should do whats friggen normal. SIGN & FILL YOUR FRIGGEN NEEDS! ALSO, WHEN YOU DRAFT SOMEONE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLAY THEM AT THE POSITION THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE! REID, YOU DID NOT INVENT THE GAME! STOP WITH THE SQUARE PEG IN ROUND HOLE $#!T, YOU MORON!!! YOU ARE BIT IN THE @$$, AGAIN!! YOU NEED TO BE FIRED!!!

Remember the 2010 draft when the #1 safety was on the board, and we all held our breathe in anticipation. The eagles finally understood, they had an eye opening experience and they’re going to fill our glaring need at safety and take Earl Thomas. And then…. another Kevin Kolb head scratcher pick… Remember when we had another glaring need at line backer and the eagles were on the board and one of the highest rated line backers was on the board, Sean Lee and the eagles …. well they traded the pick to Dallas. This Front Office is shit

My thoughts on the game:

– Vick played a great game aside from those fumbles (one wasn’t his fault, the other blatantly was) and that INT that should have been challenged because it wasn’t an INT. Sad that he got hurt. I’m sure we wouldn’t have lost that game if Vick would have finished, I’m sure of it.

– Shady is a God amongst men.

– Aside from the opening drive and the last drive, the rush defense played fantastic. However, all people remember is how it ends….and that last run by Turner was just atrocious defense. Sad because they really held him in check all game.

– We couldn’t get off the field on third and long. I saw three times where they converted third and long and that’s just unacceptable. Our secondary showed flashes of brilliance but had some hiccups, and those hiccups cost us.

– Another VERY impressive showing by the o-line. They are just getting better as they continue to play and continue to fight. Our tackles were absolutely FANTASTIC last night. In the words of Marty, they were OUTSTANDING. Herremans was owning whoever was on his side and Peters was all over the place. Peters looks like he’s well on his way to another Pro Bowl. Well worth the money and hands down the best LT in the NFC.

– Our front four are just beastly. As they continue to gel and continue to play with each other, they are only going to get better. I can’t wait until the second half of the season.

– Great game by Maclin and the WR corps in general. Maclin dropped an easy one at the end but to be real, it should have never came down to that. 171 yds and 2 tds for #18 — very impressive. Especially after that dirty hit he took. Still, to be a premiere WR in the NFL and establish yourself as a top dog, you have to make the catches that everyone remembers…..Maclin just didn’t this time. #10 had a couple catches, a crucial run down (that ended up being a TD anyway) and a nice block on a Shady McCoy run — not too impressive for someone that wants Santonio Holmes money.

All in all it was just a back and forth game that we gave away, took back, and gave away again. Give credit to the Falcons. They had alot of breaks go their way (first Tony G TD, Roddy White TD, the INT that wasn’t an INT which they later scored a TD on) — they made great plays when they had to and we didn’t. I still believe we thoroughly outplayed them and just came up short when it mattered.

Sad.

There is one constant with this team and the way in which it loses games and even entire seasons – Andrew Reid.

Despite the full financial support from his front office, it doesn’t seem he can put together a winner. Just as in the McNabb era, we now have a few stars who carry this team, but our holes are dark, deep and murderous.

Admittedly, there’s still time for the team to come together. However, I can’t help but think that our offensive line, linebacker and safety play will fall way short against the best offenses in the league. We’ll probably get 10 or 11 wins, but in the playoffs, another one and done. The NFC East isn’t great, but it still isn’t as weak as it was when Reid was winning conference championships. Still, we’ll probably struggle to win the division.

When I consider the amount of money invested in this team this year, I don’t feel Reid’s plan was a good one. Our wide 9 defensive alignment seems to require excellent run support from our LBs, but I think we’re too small to provide such support.

It hurt to see Tony Gonzalez killing us. I wanted this team to grab him a few years ago, though I don’t completely fault them for not doing so (because of his age).

In conclusion, let’s say QB play has been an issue for the past 12 years. Perhaps, it’s the position coaches who fall short. Player personnel, perhaps. Scheme seems to be an issue on both sides of the ball. The bottom line is that Andy Reid is responsible for all this.

The last time I posted this comment, someone asked who I would replace Reid with. I’ll respond by saying first, that it’s not my job to find a replacement. That’s for the professionals to do. They have the front office personnel and data necessary to do a thorough job. They found Andy Reid. Who was Reid before he became our head coach? When he was chosen, everyone asked “who is this guy?” He had never even been a coordinator. So what made him a wise choice to be head coach?

Who was Mike Tomlin before he was the Steelers’ head coach? What about Belichik? When Vince Lombardi left the game, the NFL didn’t die. Other great coaches were found. There are coaches out there, and I believe we need to find one, soon.

I hated the lost, and was pissed when Vick turned the ball over on those fumbles…Eagles would have been delivered the knock out punch…in which he still led the team to 31 points before he went out, 10 point lead! But we dominated that game, we controlled both sides of the ball for majority of the game….yes you gotta finish and close…but watching the game, I saw how effortlessly we can put points on the board..two weeks in a row, we get down by a TD, offense comes right back, as if they turn it up another level…We were obviously the better team…its only week 2…Kafka looked good, plays were more simplistic, so I’m not sure how he’d fair against a team preparing for him…But if he takes the field I’ll be cheering him as hard as I cheer Vick…
To be an elite team you must dominate both sides of the ball and close out the opponent…We;ll be doing both by years end!

drummerwinslow

Some things are just common sense. For example, yes, it’s a passing league, but if your run is working, use it! That’s what the Falcons did. They didn’t beat us with the pass. They beat us with the run. Reid is the type of coach, will disregard the run regardless of how well it’s working, regardless of the other benefits gained, i.e., creating protection for your quarterback, playing to your linemen’s strengths, etc. It’s that type of thing that bothers me most about him. Common sense seems to be his enemy.

It’s not the end of the world guys but it’s very evident what will be the downfall of this team if we do not win it all. We’ve been talking about it for the past few weeks and it hasn’t changed. The problem is, I don’t think it can change. Not sure there’s anything that can be done with the LBs at this point to make them better and same with the safeties. Against most teams we’ll be able to overcome these problem areas with the talent we have at other positions. But against the better teams in the league, they will eventually find a way to exploit the weaknesses. A good team that has good skilled players and can do both the pass and run is the team that will beat us. Andy built this defense to play ahead and I get that but the problem is, you won’t always blow everyone out. This team isn’t built to stop short yardage plays and stop the run.

What do we do with our Dline? They cause havoc when they align wide, but it leaves our garbage linebackers vulnerable. So if we pinch the Dline, it may help against the run but if the other team changes it to the pass, we probably won’t get that much pressure. THIS IS THE PROBLEM WHEN YOUR LBS STINK. Many people talked about how the Dline and secondary will mask the LB play. In actuality the LB play will affect what these other positions can do which maybe mean not being able to be as aggressive. With possibly no Vick next week and we know the Giants are going to try to run the ball, it could be an even worse loss. Hopefully Vince Young is ready to go. At least he’ll be able to make some plays. He’s not the best QB but he does win games. Doesn’t have to be pretty.

No, you are a moron. If you watched the game you saw the O-line manhandling their d-line. Vick did a good job picking up the blitz. The o-line had one miscue that was costly, and that was the goalline fumble that ray edwards returned.

Eagles oline is playing alot better than they did in the preseason… They still get over whelmed in spots.. What they do really well is pulling and moving.. The run blocking is pretty good out there.. the pass blocking is inconsistent… they have room to improve, but the real issues right now are the linebackers, the safeties to a lesser extent and some of Andy’s gameday decisions are a problem too…

I think you could get away with the safeties we have if the linebacking core wasnt such a huge weakness.. those huge holes need to get closed.. they need to sit down with Juan and tell him the casey experiment is over… he is a rookie and he needs to find a seat next to Watkins for now.. Put Chaney in the middle and either create a hybrid formation where Nnamdi/DRC covers your TE or find another linebacker to play that position…. Matthews get pushed outta middle way too much… like I said after the rams game.. there are times when it seems we dont use linebackers at all out there…thats how invisible they are… they get totally blocked outta the television screen just dominated…

celek dropped a td.
we gift-wrapped field position for atl.
all they did was capitalize the field position and redzone attempts.
we did most of the work for both teams to score.
better earlier than later, we dominated that game.
not many teams can win without their starting qb, let alone their backup.
we had a 3rd string inexperienced qb which put the clamps down on the playcalling, and that last screen play was predictable unfortunately
i predicted a convincing win, and stand corrected with the reality of what happened
if we meet atl in the playoffs with vick, we will do what gb did to them last postseason, no doubt in my mind
sure, we have things to work on but atl squeeked and lucked out at home, and clawed with desperation

the complaining or “hating” will always be around, those pessimists have egos and want attention
heres ur fifteen seconds – how did the run d in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs?
it doesnt matter right, atl started strong with the run and end strong with one big play and a goal line score on the ground right?
ill let you have your b.s. now because you wont get it throughout the season
this loss keeps the hype under the radar, although mgreg rosenthal from pro football talk sees it how i do
were dangerous and have way more pros than cons, and the atl was lucky, but they did what they had to do

am i bummed? yeah, just because we dominated the game and we had to revert to kafka
if vick stays in this game, despite the mistakes we had made, we win 38-21, maybe 38-28
we were up 24-21 when vick left, but we were near the redzone (or in, not completely sure) and shady finished with a td on the ground, 31-21
we had a couple 3 and outs and the defense had to stay on the field, with short fields against their backs
right now, this early in the season, its not our time for attention and to shine
were buiilt for the long run, and we no longer need early season recognition
weve accomplished as much as you can without being crowned, there is no doubt in my mind that were going to be playing in jan with a shot at feb
with vick, were going to the superbowl and although that was my preseason prediction, watching the first 2 weeks and looking at the schedule/match ups makes me better about that

idc if you arent happy with the names in the lineup, were a pretty darn good football team
were not going to make a lot of these same mistakes and drops
we had a chance to win with kafa (a 3rd string qb in prime time against a playoff team from last yr) and a pro bowl caliber wr drops a wide open first down (turnover on downs, ends the game)
keep it real, not hostile
ill agree with the flaws we do have, but were good enough to make up for those or rise above them
last night, we just didnt have option a or b to finish the game

bummed about last night because of an L and an injury, but better sooner than later
go birds!

I agree with Birdo and that the Eagles OL play was very good most of the game and definitely good enough to win the game.. The Falcons had 0 Sacks and both Peters and Herremans were beasts all game long..
Did Vick get hit on some plays, of course he did which happens to every QB in every game and of course, he scrambles a lot more than the average QB, but for the most part, he had ample time to get rid of the ball and that injury was just a fluke play where he was spun into his own blocker …
Now what I don’t like is the play calling once the Eagles are in the Red-Zone,forget these Play-action passes, Gadeget high school plays and these Trap runs with pulling blockers once your in the red-zone for they take a little longer to develop and when you are in the red-zone and those extra 2-3 seconds is huge difference where the Defense is simply keying off the QB
or RB
I am disappointed in the loss like everyone else is, but there were some good things and lessons to learn from it.. I’ve stated since the get go with the 1st 2 games on the Road and in loud noisy Domes, to get a split at 1-1 is not the end of the world and for the most part (besides Vick’s fluke Concussion, the team has remained relatively healthy)..
But there is no doubt that teams will run the ball around Babins/Samuel side and they will attack the middle of the field with TE’s/Slant Routes against these LB & Safeties.. I also see teams attacking this Defense with no-huddle attacks to not allow the Eagles to make the many substitutions that they like to make… Someone has got to cover the good, athletic TE’s from the get go and at the line-of-scrimmage, Falcons TE Gonzo was getting free-releases all game long and you cannot allow that.. Why not put DCR right over top of him, or LB Rolle or Clayton who have the size and speed to stay with Athletic TE’s which the Eagles will face in upcoming games like the
Redksins,49ers,Patriots,Jets,Bills,,etc,etc… The LB’s and the Safety position are the areas I will be watching and expect some changes to be made..

paulman

Drop Passes is another area of concern..
D-Jax dropped 1 in the End-Zone (I think there ended up being a penalty on the play against the Eagles but still, you have to make that play)
Celek drops a pass at the 2 yard line (which seems to happen every game with him anymore)
Avant drops a 3rd Down pass (partially deflected by LB, but again you have to catch that ball in the NFL)
Maclin drops final pass (after having a great game too..)

Ball Security– Vick and McCoy have to do a better job of protecting the ball when out in space, they are carrying the ball like a suitcase which will get battted out every time

Oline was fine.

Awol…you said it correctly, “ATL capitalized on field position”, but you seem to have left out where the field position came from. You fail to mention or fumbling, bumbling, “making things happen” QB, who decided Sunday night was a good night to giftwrap some pts for the ATL.

When Vick left game it was 24-21. Though Birds were on the 18 and did score a few plays later. All of ATLs pts were a consequence of Vick’s carelessness with the ball.

Vick did one thing very well last night. He was great at keeping both teams in the ganme (an old Brett Favre specialty).

vinne – thought you can cacth my drift
i said: we did most of the work for both teams to score
im commenting, im not writing a blog post
ur picking at stuff just like you do with the eagles, thats fine
just realize we have more pros and cons, very promising team with, were not the chiefs (bottom of totem pole)
were similar to the chargers, pick us every year and for whatever reason, we dont make it/win
were gonna be fine, and id rather give the other team 2 qtrs of running the football and their tight end, then be thrown all over
we take care of the little/stupid mistakes, we dominate that game and most of this season

but sure, u thrive on the negative and thats how you wanna be
go ahead, do you ill do me, and when its all said and done if we dont win it all were all going to have a bad taste
if we win it all (whenever that is) we’ll all be celebrating, thats the bottomline

Tough loss, Maclin dropped the ball and that’s that! We had the game won but once are leader went down it seemed team was deflated! Atlanta needed this game bad and we had dominated them in series as of late. I’m not happy about it but we’ll send the dirty birds home sobbing in playoffs!!! This loss sucks!!! We had matty vanella ice do splits like a balarina dancing in pocket whipping his butt. Defense has a lot of potential but they folded and let these guys come back. I guess a negative can be turned into a positive and they trip, fall down and come together as a unit as the season goes on. Lick the wounds raging EAGLES and come back soaring!!! GO BIRDS!!!!
