Vick Goes After Refs For Not Protecting Him In The Pocket

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick couldn’t hold it in any more. After the game in his meeting with the media, once he started talking about his broken hand, he couldn’t help but starting talking about getting hit in the pocket and very rarely seeing a flag for it.

On the play where he broke his hand, Vick was hit by second-year defensive end Jason Pierre Paul with a helmet-to-hand blow. Of course Pierre-Paul was trying to deliver a helmet-to-helmet shot like he had done a couple of time previously in the game.

I think Vick makes a good point and it was a point which Andy Reid tried to make a year ago.. Athletic quarterbacks or quarterbacks who can run don’t seem to be protected in the pocket like quarterbacks whom we call “statues”. Referees seem to feel that they don’t need to protect a guy who can run at times and gain yardage.

They seem to treat Vick like he’s a running back when he’s in or out of the pocket.

When asked about whether his right hand was on his helmet when he got hit, Vick didn’t really care about that aspect of the play.

“It really doesn’t matter where it was at. I was trying to protect myself. Still didn’t get a flag and that’s pretty much been the story for the last three weeks. I mean obviously at some point something catastrophic is going to happen and I broke my hand. Not to blame the refs or say that it was their fault. It’s just one of those unfortunate situations and I just think more precautions should be taken when I’m inside the pocket. I mean if you look at all the replays, I’m on the ground every time and it’s unfortunate for myself and it’s unfortunate for my team and I’ll be lying if I said I wasn’t, if I were to sit here and say I wasn’t frustrated now because of that.”

“Why? I mean, you all see it”, Vick said. “There’s no reason for me to go into a big dissertation about why I’m not getting the calls. The refs, they have to do their job as well. I even mentioned it in training camp to the refs when we had out little meeting, so just for precaution. But hey, I don’t know.”

When Vick was hit by Pierre-Paul everybody was wondering how his head was and whether he was mentally all there or not. The fact that he suffered a concussion last week was the focus everyone’s thinking.

“My head was fine”, Vick said. “I took some shots early and they didn’t affect me and I just tried to keep going and (I was) seeing things clearly, felt good in the pocket, obviously wish we would have done better in the red zone, but tha’t all I have to say now”.

As much as he bemoans the fact that he’s hurt again and may not play next week, Vick needs to focus on the inconsistent play of the offense. They couldn’t put the ball into the end zone.

He needs to have a talk with his head coach and find out exactly what the big fella is trying to do.

Vick has no idea whether he will play this upcoming week or not

He completed 17 of 23 passes for 176 yards with one interception but no touchdowns. He also lost a ball on a fumble, which was recovered by offensive tackle Jason Peters.

Excuses, excuses! STFU Vick! Tell it like it is, your O-line is getting you hit way too much & they suck! Your are only leading the league & getting hit & hurries!

I’ve noticed and have stated sinec Pre-Season that the Ref’s are letting the QB get hit a little bit more.. As long as defenders are not using their helmts as missles or hitting the QB in the Head/FAce Mask area, they will be letting it go so Man-Up VIck and play the game and don’t worry about what the Ref is or is not calling, get the ball out of your hands sooner, lead yuor receivers instead of throwing behind them and for the life of St JOan, protect and tuck the damn ball when you do scramble… I Said this last year and I will say it again, VIck peaked and had about a 4-5 Week incredible window of playing phenomenal football (from Ocotober to mid-Novemember) and it’s been mediocre at best.. He has reverted back to his usual playing style which is exciting with lots of great plays, but with a bacd plays and unneeded risks, and too many turnovers… I am afraid what we have seen out of Vicks last 6-8 games are what we will have over the next 6 years .. and that’s an exciting QB but not a winning one…
I would also go out tommorrow and look to trade D-Jax for some LB/Safety help and get something for him while you can, for he’s a goner afer this season and I can’t believe how he stopped running his route and gave up on that last Kafka Int, He could have at least attempted to keep running or jumping ro deflect the ball or block the defenders vision, instead he just slowed down and watched the defender Intercept the ball.. This is inexcusable to me .. I keep hearing how D-Jax opens it up for everyone else… I have not seen that happen much, Maclin is the best WR on this team hands down…

I was beyond embarassed/insensed by this press conference. There was one borderline hit in this game. And I don’t think it deserved a flag. There was no flag when Babin grabbed Eli`s facemask. Why is he whining like this.

“Ijust think more precautions should be taken when I`m in the pocket….”
You want protection???? Throw the ball before I can count to 5 steamboats for God’s sake!!

But here’s the controversial line,,,,
“There’s no reason for me to go into a big dissertation about why I’m not getting the calls.”
Because you know what he’s insinuating. I have a strong feeling why he thinks he isn;t getting the calls…..and I know SOngs will agree with you…..but just stfu Vick. Stop holding the ball untill the DE is diving at you and its too late for them to stop. Stop running around like a clown.

“I don’t know why I don’t get the 15 yard flags like everyone else do”

Really? I know why….and its right there in your answer. My 4 year old speaks better than Vick does.

Read D. Throw the ball. What was that line from Singletary? “Can’t do it!”

Mike “5 steamboats” Vick.

Paulman I have been agreeing with you on this for 18 months. We need to trade DJax while his value is high. We would be fine with Maclin-Smith-Avant as the 3 receivers. We are too deep at some positions (CB, WR, RB, and even DE once Graham is back) we need to make some moves and improve areas of the team we are lacking (MLB, OLB, S, OL)

Trade D Jax? I’m so sick of that argument. What do you care? It’s not your money. He’s fun as hell to watch and he spreads the field. Why would we trade an explosive threat?

@Paulman

With all your self righteous ramblings one could actually believe you’re making salient points. You and a few other haters need to quit with this “Vick of old ways” nonsense. The Atlanta version would not be sitting in the pocket become a high school OL trying to make plays. He would be running all over the damn place. Aside from the Washington game and injury last year, his injury have actually taken place in the pocket.

Last week he completed a nice pass FROM THE POCKET only to be taken out by his own man. A freak accident. nothing to do with new or old habits. The old Vick actually neglected the playbook and the offense as it was designed to be executed. He was a mercurial sandlot superstar.

The current version is a qb trying to make the most out of shyt. The playcalling is mostly atrocious. AND HE IS TAKING TOO MANY and its not because he’s always holding the ball. That excuse is the company line from his many haters. A defender farts around Brady, Manning, and the Brees of the league and there’s 50 fing flags on the ground.

An int was all on smith. the fumble i do attribute to him. Get a fing grip guys and stop making shyt up.

Yeah thats right Vinnie and paula shut up Vick and do what we would do. LoL you guys are a joke and the reason the world thinks all philly fans are ignorant morons. yeah Mike stay in he pocket like a statue behind a ridulously lousy Offensive line and get the hell beat out of you on every pass play. Pay the man 100 million you darn sure better make sure he can get to week 3 without injury. Like the man said in he movie “you can’t handle the truth”. You want lies and platitudes from these players. Bottom line is the refs are doing a terrible job of protecting the main asset of the Eagles and like it or not thats mike vick.

By the way might want to tell Desean this is no way to get a new deal, he’s has been invisible since the rams game. And when he does appear its only to drop a pass.

2nd worse in the NFL last year taking sacks after 3 seconds. And yes, his grammar is directly linked to his solid 20 on the wonderlick score (I think that`s about grade 4)..and you wonder why he can`t make split second analysis and decisions……..

The truth seems to hurt you guys so much….you take the fact that he isn`t a good QB soooo personally, and revert to grammar school name calling. Weak.

HOFer Dan Marino’s wonderlic was? How about multiple lomabrdi winner Terry Bradshaw? And what about sure first ballot HOF and SB mvp Farve?

Because we all know as your astute analysis suggest, that wonderlic scores are the be all to end all for intelligence. SMFH

I admit the Playcalling is horrible at the most crucial times and it always has been.. I’ve been on record that Coach AR/MM and their pass happy offense filled gadget plays, get the QB killed, will never win a Super Bowl and I stand by it.. As far as WB Vick goes, and I’ve said this many times,He is very exciting to watch and can make some unbelievable plays that no one else can make, and he gives this Eagle Team it’s best chance to win , but he is not proven to me that he is consistent enough with his reads and accuracy to sustain drives throughout a game and his ball protection has never been that good… idon’ tsee this team as a Playoff Team with or without Vick for 2011, They have 3 LB’s who are not NFL Starting Claiber LB’s and they have 1 in Casey Matthews who I am not sure would even be on most NFL Rosters as a Special Teamer/Practice squad player.. Their Safety play which had so much promise early last season has fallen into the abyss.. I’ve never seen an Eagle (Nate Allen) who got off to such a good start his first 4-5 games as a rookie last Season to looking like he doesn;t belong on a Football Field.. What happened to hthis guy, I know he injured his knee but he’s be up and about for a while now, he looks completely lost and just physically overmathced by everyone he comes into contact with…It must be his confidence or something else going on.. Coleman was good as a back-up and Special Teamer but is not Starter material for he lacks overall foot speed to be an everydown Safety at the NFL level… Page is serviceable by step below Q Mikell and Rookie Jarrett is a year away at best before seeing the field and contributig…
LB and Safety positions are actually weaker than they were a Season ago..
DE & CB are better but Overall this Defense hasn’t changed much//Yes, there will probably be some more Sacks and even some more Interceptions, but at the expense of give up big plays in the middle of the field, getting shredded by TE’s and Screens where LB will get exposed and the bottom line is that without having a physical, tough LB Corp and good Safety play, the Red-Zone Defense will not improve and will probably rank in the bottom group in the NFL again, as it has the last 2 Season and on top of all this, there is the Coaching or lack there of DC Juan Castillo…

Hey Cold…just to review….it isn’t 1975 anymore…nor 1990.

Marino, Bradshaw and the ultimate overrated Qb Favre. Nice list.

Do you know what the number 84 is? Thats the total number of passes Bradshaw threw in 4 SBs. And they weren’t of the complicated variety…He talks often about how each WR would only have one route to run….I’d like to see him run the Birds offence.

The average score for a winning SB QB over the past decade is 30.3. Go take the test yourself….its a frikkiin’ joke. But wonderlick is just one indicator.

Of the last 9 SB QBs…8 have been 4 yr Uni grads…and Dilfer went back later to finish. They’ve learned how to read…study….assess…evaluate.

Your buddy Vick left after 2….and I doubt he attended many classes while he was at VT…….

So combine his low score, lack of education, pathetically irresponsible life choices, with his butchering of the english language, and I don’t think its much of a stretch to determine there’s not much rattlin’ around in that noodle of his.

Besides, he’s put the ball on the carpet 6x over the past 2 years….like all good QBs do.

BTW…did anyone get the # of the bus Vick threw his O-line under during this interview?

I know about 3/4 of the way through he rather uninthusiastically dropped the obligatory, “I have confidence in my oline.”….but I have to wonder how the great leader’s confidence building rant:

“Everybody’s seen the game…I’m on the ground constantly…. all the time….everytime I throw the ball…. in all my highlights (there’s that my again), every time I throw the ball I’m on the ground……”

is going to go over amongst his OL mates?

They have to know he’s one of the worst in the league holding the ball too long…..there’s bound to be one or two of them who listened to this and are saying, “ya…always on the turf eh?…why don’t you just throw the ball when you;re supposed to……”

I just watched Ben Rothlesburger get blasted all over the Indy turf tonight….you think he’s going to say anything like Vick did?

Any Reid didn’t have this team ready to play. There was no intensity and the tackling was horrible. Reid’s play calling in the Red Zone really was bad. This has been going on for ten years. I felt bad for Vick but there is no way we shouldn’t have been ready to play at home. I don’t see Vick playing again until after the bye. Give Vince Young a chance and lets run the ball with McCoy. We also need to settle the Jackson situation. Its apparent that the contract is affecting his play. If you aren’t going to pay him that we do need to trade him and move on. Right now he’s not making a good case to receive a big contract. Juan is doing a terrible job as the defensive coordinator. He’s not getting the most out of his players which is a bad sign if we are suppose to be a playoff team!!!!

everything is bad,, sloppy defense .. offensive play calling .. i knew vick shouldve just took the week off .. kafka isnt ready by any means.. we need vince young in there if vick cant go.. what a disappointment.. vick has to realize that he has to do everything.. he cant rely on noone.. that why he shouldnt just waited till he was 100%…hes frustrated.. the only reciever he really trusts is avant.. desean doesnt go full speed half the time.. i think vick is relying to much on his teamates .. the play calling was moronic.. if vick was 100 percent i expect a bootleg every time in side the red zone so he has the rupass option.. there are no excuses…. if mccoy is tired at the goal line the ball must be in vick hands.. i dont know what the eagles coaches are thinking they had it right year.. theyre out thinking themselves ..

I think it made vick look like a crybaby the way he said he did not get the calls. He holds the ball to long and thats why he gets hit alot after he throws the ball. Also when he runs outside the tackles and gets hit the rules for being in the pocket no longer apply.Mike kafka get whacked after he released his first pass he threw that was intercepted when he came in the game but he did not whine like a baby.I guess vick wants to be treated like he is in training camp and wearing his red jersey and no one can touch him.Even tony romo did not cry like a baby after he got hit after throwing a pass and got his rib broken and there was no flag thrown. The bottom line here is quarterbacks are always getting hit after they throw the ball and it is legal as long as they do not get hit in the head or legs or get hit too long after the ball was released.Sometimes the refs call roughing when they should not and sometimes they do not call roughing when they should. It is a judgement call just like pass interference or holding and the refs are only human and do not always get it right. We also have the advantage of seeing the replays in slo-mo and from many different angles but the refs do not have that benefit
