My Thoughts Eagles/Giants

When I looked at this Eagles team in training camp, I figured that there would be some early bumps in the road. They added a ton of new faces and didn’t have the benefit of offseason workouts to get everyone acclimated. So, I thought things would be a little tough early, but that the team would eventually hit its stride. That still might happen, but I didn’t expect to see the same old nonsense rearing its ugly head like this. The mistakes were so egregious that we forget that this Eagles team actually dominated a good portion of this game. So, let’s look at the game:

What I liked…

-One of the announcers during yesterday’s broadcast made a comment about LeSean McCoy being the best running back in the NFL. Easy there, touchdown. He’s not the best in the game as he still has some little things to work on. I still hate the way he holds the ball (yet he still hasn’t gotten burned by it! I’m happy and frustrated all at the same time. He should not be getting away with this recklessness, yet he does.), and he needs to lose the 10% of Reggie Bush that he has in him when it comes to the East/West running.

That said, McCoy is an unmitigated stud. If you had told me during his rookie season that he’d turn into a back of this level, I’d have told you (politely) that you’re a moron who is watching these games with green tinted glasses. Didn’t see this coming. Of his 24 carries on Sunday, there were about 3-5 of them where my buddy Jay and I looked at each other and said, “all McCoy.” Every back needs some kind of blocking, but he needs less than others. There were a couple, including his touchdown run, where you had to pick up your jaw off of the floor and wonder how he made something out of those plays. A couple of his cuts forced you to yell out and sit straight up in your chair. This guy proves more and more to me each week. This week I learned that maybe he has “bell cow” status and that you don’t need to limit his touches. Of course a full season would be needed to prove that, but still, I never had him in that category before.

And that said, for those people that want to throw the name “Barry Sanders” into the discussion, knock it the %#$% off. Go watch some Barry highlights to remind yourself of why you are way off base.

-I said it before and I’ll say it again: I was wrong for hating on the Jason Babin signing. I didn’t like it when they did it, but I’m wrong again.

-Trent Cole continues to do his thing too. He got another sack, but he was involved in a ton of plays behind the line of scrimmage. Of the two new line coaches, Jim Washburn is the one I like.

-While he hasn’t been completely tested yet, Alex Henery has done nothing to draw our ire yet. I’m a bit of a special teams nerd and the kicking game can set me off. So far so good on the rookie. I was impressed with the rushed field goal at the end of the half. Anyone else reminded of Akers’ work in the Steelers game back in 2000 as time ran out in the game? Okay, okay, it wasn’t nearly on that level. Call it a mini-Akers job.

-Chas Henry did a decent job, although I’m not in love yet. Still, it looks like this kid can kick and will be a good player in this league. Needs to be more consistent, but I’d take him over Steve Weatherford any day.

…and not so much…

-I’ve blocked out about three hours of my day for this part.

-Forget the injuries, I’m just not impressed with Michael Vick so far this season. He’s made some great plays, but has shown a lot of inconsistency, inaccuracy and poor decision making. I joined the chorus of praise last season when he was on a different planet, but that hasn’t been what we’ve gotten so far in 2011. Is it all his fault? Of course not, but he played extremely well with a poor offensive line last year. I’m not seeing $100 million worth of QB play right now. Maybe we’re putting too much on his shoulders, but it’s only because he’s handled that much weight before. Let’s go, Mike.

-And while I’m at it, let’s stay on Vick. What is it that he doesn’t get about protecting the football while running? If these fumbles happened in the pocket, I’d be much more forgiving. You try to look downfield and make a play while you have 300-lb men flailing around you and slapping at your hands. But, once you’re on the move? Tuck. the. ball. away. Jason Peters saved your bacon. Luckily he was a tight end in college.

-I think it’s time to hammer Andy Reid now. This is what I was talking about before about seeing the same old stupid crap. This team, with all-new personnel and all-new coaching, still cannot get one yard when they need to. Remember what we were saying after the 2008 (I think that’s the right year) loss to the Chicago Bears when Correll Buckhalter couldn’t get in from a yard out? Matt Schobel blew a block to let the defender in to kill that play? It’s the same stupid crap. This o-line couldn’t get an ounce of push as we watched Howard Mudd’s guy, Jason Kelce, get blown two yards off the ball. Something is wrong. We’ve changed the pieces but the same stupid crap his happening. Hell, I’m changing the title of this week’s column to “Same Stupid Crap.”

-So, it was painfully clear to everyone after two of your four snaps down at the goal line, that this offensive line wasn’t moving anyone out of the way. So, let’s run it up the gut two more times! Why run a toss to the guy with 5.3 yards per carry on the day when we can keep exercising the definition of insanity!? Owen Schmitt? Really? A QB sneak with a small guy? Bring in VY for god’s sake. QB sneaks with guys his size are very difficult to stop even if you know what’s coming.

-I think it was literally five minutes after this display of ineptitude (not five game minutes….five minutes) that the Eagles were faced with fourth-and-a-long-one at or about midfield. You just – and I mean just – watched your offense get thoroughly out-classed by the Giants in short yardage. Not an hour ago, not two hours ago (although it would still be wholly unacceptable)….five minutes. You have a two-point lead and a chance to put an offense deep in its own territory. An offense, mind you, that hadn’t done squat all day but for two big plays that were the result of (man I really want to swear here but G. would kill me) very poor defensive plays. I firmly believe, despite all the other problems, that the game was lost in these two situations. Couldn’t get one yard, then tried to get one yard when they had no business even thinking about trying to get one yard. Same. Stupid. Crap.

-While I’m dog-piling on Andy, how about some of his decisions this offseason that had a direct impact on this particular game. Let’s start with Juan Castillo. No, that wasn’t him out there who couldn’t tackle, but he made some questionable calls at crucial times. I’m thinking about the blitz on the screen that turned into a joke of a touchdown. It’s not that Castillo is awful, that’s not what I’m saying (yet). Yes, he deserves some blame for the way this defense is playing, but let’s go back to Andy’s decision to appoint him. How many times did we hear in the offseason terms like “all-in” and “Super Bowl?” If that’s what you are going for, why on god’s green Earth would you make an offensive line coach your defensive coordinator? Now is not the time for that. You want to win it all this year, yet you’re willing to sit through Castillo’s growing pains and learning curve? Are you out of your mind? How can someone as intelligent as Andy Reid (and he is extremely intelligent in many areas), be so mentally deficient in some aspects? I know that’s not the first I’ve written that and I guess it probably won’t be the last. Maddening.

-Now, let’s go back to the end of last season. The Eagles finally found a guy who looked to have some promise at middle linebacker in Jamar Chaney. So what do you do on draft weekend? Take an undersized guy with a great family tree and immediately call him your starting linebacker. So then you’re moving Chaney to a new position, so he’s not going to be as good right away either. Well guess what? Your linebackers are probably the worst in the NFL and your insistence on downplaying their importance is currently biting you in the behind. You want to get all ticked off in your after-game press conference? Be livid with yourself. It’s these awful decisions that you made, that contributed heavily to this loss. People that know me know that I stick up for Andy all the time and for the most part I support him. But these were dumb decisions that everyone else seemed to think were dumb at the time, and now we know they were dumb. I’m not right very often, so I’m going to brag when I am. I hated the Castillo move and I thought the insertion of Casey Matthews into the starting lineup on draft day was questionable at best.

-Casey Matthews can’t be on the field. Did I make that clear yet? Not strong side, not weak side, not the middle. Can’t be on the field. When Brandon Jacobs is making big plays in the passing game, there needs to be a change. I can’t say this clearly enough: Brandon Jacobs might be the worst receiving running back in football (at least of those that are relevant and actually play). I lived in the NY area for much of his career and watched him every week. Absolute stone hands with no ability to catch anything out of the backfield. Yeah, that’s the guy that burned Casey.

-How about those safeties? Kurt Coleman single-handedly cost this team a touchdown. What kind of hit/tackle was that on….Victor Cruz? Victor Cruz?! This guy was on IR last year with an injury that wasn’t season-ending! Get it? That was pathetic. And Jarrad Page was picked up off the scrap heap late in the preseason because it was painfully obvious that the safeties were horrific. He’s not doing it for me either. Nate Allen is coming off of a knee injury so I don’t want to pick on him too much. But, he was a waste of space out there too. Between the safeties and linebackers, it’s like a big giant hole of suck up the center of the field.

-Nnamdi, you aren’t getting a free pass either. This team needs more from you. Not thrilled so far.

-Let’s pick on drafting, shall we? You can go through any team’s drafts and pick them apart for mistakes. It’s very easy to do. But, let’s look at the Eagles last two drafts. Sure, Brandon Graham might be a bad example because of the knee injury and microfracture surgery. But, he wasn’t doing squat before he got hurt. I don’t know that I even saw flashes. Maybe because he’s probably better suited to OLB in a 3-4 and most people knew that before the draft? Don’t tell Andy? We just talked about Nate Allen, so that’s covered. Daniel Te’o-Nesheim (I hate typing his name) and Trevard Lindley? Both cut after one year. I had to do a Google search to see what they were up to. Te’o-Nesheim is thankfully on our very own practice squad! Didn’t want to lose all that production, did we?! And I saw that Lindley had a tryout with the Bengals a couple weeks ago. The bottom line? No one else wants these guys and they were third- and fourth-round picks in 2010. That’s pretty bad.

As for this year? Your first two picks were in areas of great need. Danny Watkins was slated to start at guard. Jaiquawn Jarrett was supposed to be a force as a safety. Anyone heard their names this season? Crickets chirping. They don’t even dress. What does that tell you? Watkins went from starter to not even dressing in a matter of days. Is this to say that they will never contribute anything? No, that’s not what I’m saying. But to not even dress by Week 3? Especially Watkins. While he certainly has things to learn, guard is mostly a position of, “see that guy in front of you? Yeah, block him.” That doesn’t take a ton of brains or knowing which receiver is running a sticks route. You should, at the very least, be on the active roster on game days.

-I guess the drafting issue is a little bit more sensitive this week when I see Brandon Graham on the sidelines and a guy they could/should have gotten, Jason Pierre-Paul, destroying people on the field.

-Just because you maybe realized that you were too conservative with the play-calling with Mike Kafka against Atlanta, doesn’t mean that you go bombs away on his first throw this week. There is a reason you were conservative with Kafka. He’s Mike Kafka.

-While I don’t think DeSean Jackson could have caught the ball on the deep interception that essentially ended the game, he could have provided an ounce of effort. It looked to me like it was just kind of an “oh well” situation. Speaking of DeSean, I don’t care who is draped on your back, you need to catch that ball. Right through your hands for an incompletion. You know who makes that catch? Larry Fitzgerald and Santonio Holmes. Look at their paychecks and now look at yours. Get back to work.

-And how about Steve Smith helping out? I know he has a resume that speaks for itself, but this was a lousy game for him. He was targeted I believe five times. One clanked off his hands for a huge interception. One he caught for a first down when the game was probably out of reach. On another, he made a great third down catch that was 1-2 yards short of the first down (didn’t they used to call third downs “Third and Smith” in NY?). One of his targets was in the end zone that was batted and almost intercepted. He needs to get his game back, especially with the uncertainty of Maclin this week.

-I still haven’t gotten a good explanation for why this team didn’t sign Kirk Morrison. Which Eagles linebacker is better than Morrison? And he was on the street for a while so he couldn’t have commanded top dollar. Maddening.

Okay, my energy is gone. I’ve probably left some things out, but I can only complain so much. It’s not time to get off the bandwagon for this team by any stretch of the imagination. But there are some glaring problems that need to be addressed pronto. Let’s just hope that these issues aren’t so debilitating that the Eagles miss the playoffs. The Giants are a banged-up, mediocre team. I think the Redskins….well, water sinks to its own level, right? It’s a long season and it’s easy for people like me to overreact, but this was a loss filled with the same stupid crap that we’ve been watching with Eagles teams in the Andy Reid era. I’m not on the “Andy must go” train, but I might be after this season.

Good stuff Micha, watch the replay videotape of McCoy on the 4th & 1 Play from mid-field, the play was designed to go behind LT and there was a hole there to get the neccessary yardage to get the 1st Down.. McCoy broke to his right way too early to try to make the big run instead of the safe run… I will continue to call them as I see them and for as great as a game he had, it was a huge blunder that in essence, cost the Eagles the Victory..

Andy Must Go Today. We are tired of the same excuses. G we can’t continue to beat ourselves with bad coaching. This team has to much talent to be 1 and 2. Unless he changes his terrible coaching habits immediately we won’t make the playoffs. The second half of the schedule is worse than the teams we are playing now. You can’t give away games and expect to make everything up at the end. The play calling in the red zone was enough to say Andy must GO!!!!!!!!

I’ve always held out hope that the Eagles would get the ship righted, but the truth is, the Eagles will never win a championship under Andy Reid. He freezes in the big moments. He is a total blank slate when it’s crunch time to come up with the big calls or the crucial in-game adjustments. We see it year after year as Micah has outlined in great detail. Same stupid crap every single year. Andy is a great QB coach, and nothing more IMHO!

Anyone know the last team the Eagles actually beat a team with a Winning Record besides the Giants in the Miracle Comeback Win last season
I do not count the Colts from last year when they were missing like 5-6 Starters and still almost beat the Eagles at the Linc..
Check it out … It’s been a while ..

i don’t think it’s a stretch to say lesean might be the best back in the nfl. it’s not like we have two coaches in andy and marty where we could actually find that out because they hardly ever run the ball. plus they spell too much. i mean look at what he did when he was playing yesterday. he looked like barry sanders. not to mention we have a bandaid offensive line. i think lesean mccoy could be the best back in the nfl if you take those things into account.

@Micah – good work! but, a thing about your comment “McCoy needs to lose the east/west game”…I dont agree….this is where he turns losts, into gains…when we need a short 2 yards or so, yes he should be going more south/north…but what makes him great, and what makes him the type of player he is, is the way he gets away from tackles, makes something outta nothing…without that east/west game he’d be a mediocre RB in the league… Lets not try and change up McCoy’s game….

There at times to take a chance for the big run but a 4th and 1 play is not the time.. If you see a video-replay fro behind the backfield, you will hactually see a nice size hole develop just left of Peters wheere Peters & Mathis Double teams the Defender to the insdie and the the Te or FB had the left end sealed off.. look like a little daylight to get a couple of yards and most importantly the 1st Down..

I am in deep mourning today – at the gym I watched about 10 different replays of McCoys 4 and 1 –

If you watch – especially the end zone view from behind the O – the play started left and McCoy cut back – watch it – Peters crushed/caved in the Giants line – most of the interior submarined –

Clay harbor kicked the outside man -had McCoy run hard off tackle he would have scored easily untouched……….

What this has to do with Vick getting smacked around – badly missed tackles – why we insist on running traps in the red zone, why we keep giving up big plays………… and what is up with 24 – he was supposed to be this shut down CB.. the rams got him for a long pass and a PI – he got beat yesturday………………… I am now officially onboard with this dude Rolle or Jordan have to get a chance – they can’t do any worse……………….

depression until at least Thursday….

i have refiled my paper with the NFL to reinstate Paulman from retirement
I figure I have about 6-8 good games left in my body and can help out for the stretch drive..
I never want to see my favortite or home team panic, but this weeks game versus the 49ers is a must win, I don’t care how ugly, who plays QB, who scores and who makes tackles and plays, but if the Eagles lose at home to 49ers and go 1-3, there season will be over for all intents and purposes for that would be 3 NFC Conference losses before they even get into the meat of their Schedule.. What a letdown this Season has been….

Thanx for the specifics NavyDave, I wasn’s sure if it was Celek/Schmitt or HArbor Sealign off that left side, but there was a nice hole to run right off of Peters left cheek and cut outside to left sideline and it;s probably a 20 yd gain and maybe even to the house, but mcCoy cut to the right before he had too and has done this a few times with great success where, but on a 4th &1 there is no 2nd chances, run for daylight and get the yardage needed to keep possesion and that’s the biggest area where McCoy has to learn and mature in..

YEah I was yelling at the TV – I was never a RB – but damn 1 yard get the shoulders down and run HARD –

I Off Coordinated for one season – we were a triple option team – quickest way to make it into coaches dog house – the cheesy cut back – run hard, run straight hit the guy and get the extra yard – I would rather 2nd and 8 then watch you freakin dance and leave me with a 2nd and 11. Yeah McCoy is a pro – but got to know the difference –

and is it me – or does Ronnie Brown now look like he wants to do that dancing thing too –

and don’t get me off topic – what the heck is wrong with this defense.. they are getting worse

After watching the Cowboy and Redskin game, I was not all that impressed with either teams offenses, but both of their Defenses will create a lot of pressure and turnovers on this Eagles Offense.. and the way that both of them can run the ball and uses their good TE’s, I don’t see the Eagles matching up well with either of them at this time.. anyone notice that Cowboy ILB Sean Lee is leading teh NFL in tackles and had another strong game tonight.. Of course the Eagles traded one of their 2nd Rund picks in 2010 Draft to the Cowboys to make up for the 2 3rd Round PIcks the Eagles traded away to move up and get Brandon Graham..
The 2010 Draft year will haunt this Eagle Team for years in my opinion for they went into the Draft having 5 Selections in the Top #120 Picks
1st Round (24th Overall) and 2 2nd Round picks and 2 3rd Round picks

Instead coming out of the Draft with 5 Highly rated players they traded up ridiculously for Brandon Graham, Traded a 2nd Round Pick to rival Cowboys
who then took ILB S Lee (the very position the Eagles are hurting at 1 Draft later) and traded away 2 3rd Rounders to move up and get Graham

In essence, the Eagles 5 of the Top 120 Selections in the 2010 Draft and ended up with Bradon Graham, Nate Allen and Teo’ Neisham…
This is absolutley horrible and I don’t want to hear about or car about getting good value in the 4th.5th,6th Rounds with players like Kafka,Chaney.Coleman…
This strategy of moving all around and reaching for players has hurt the team for a the few Drafts and now we see the results of it for if you take away key Free-Agent SIgnings and Trades the Eagles have made the last 2 Seasons, where is all the good young talent.. Take away C Jenkins,A Dixon,D Tapp,J Babin, P Hunt, A Samuel,Asmo, DCR, J Page and where is the home grown, drafted and developed Talent on this Defense
Then on the Offense, take away the acquisitions of OL Peters,Mathis & Devan and where would this Eagle OL be…
The Eagles have hit at WR with great Draf Picks in D-Jax/Maclin.Avant and Cooper and also at RB with McCoy and Lewis.. but suspect everywhere else and especialyl across the line of scrimmage whioch originally was Coach AR strength and I just don’t see the ressults and the picks on Defense have been abysmal if you ask me…

paulman, its kind of hard to miss on a RB and WR too so dont read too much into the drafting of Mccoy, Jmac, Djax etc. You pretty much know what you’re going to get when you scout those positions.

September 27, 2011 4:48 am

There are many misses at WR’s , Here’s a quick list of WR’s taken in the 1st 2 Rounds since 2008 who have not panned out at all in the NFl and some are not even in the league anymore

2008 – Donnie Avery (Rams), Devin Thomas (Redskins), James Hardy (Bills), Malcolm Kelly (Redskins), Limas Sweed (Steelers) Dexter Jackson (TB Bucs)

2009 – Darius Heward-Bey (Raiders) , M Crabtree (49ers), Brian Robiske (Browns)

2010 – Demaryius Thomas (Broncos), Golden Tate (Seahawks) , A Edwards (Panthers) Taylor Price (Patriots) , Andre Roberts (Cardinals)

Point is, about 1/2 the WR’s Drafted in the 2-3 Rounds don’t make the Impact as expected and either have problems learning the playbook, the speed of the game or lack the maturity or work ethic to improve their Route Running, their hands and strength which is probably the norm at all postions where about 1/2 the players selected just don’t make it for whatever reasons..

I have to get this off my chest. we are playing like dukie. the vick rant i understand but it was for his lineman also. IF it was Paytons line or Bradys line and those guys saw a lineman take a shot at there QB you would see flags allover the feild becasue there lineman would be kicking but and punching the defense in the mouth. These guys play like they dont like him. QBs and lineman stick together and fight together. Reid needs to make these guys live together durning the season, sleep in the same room and do the buddy system untiol the get along. Im sorry but the coaches got to much talent on this team they have to fire someone to get the point across or we wont win another game.

to loyal Eagles fans and to the NFL and the rich history of American football.
Don’t they have any pride or toughness. They play and coach like a bunch of

Big E – one thing I know you and I will never ever ever ever ever ever agree on –

know what that is –

The definition of Loyal – try some of these – unwavering in devotion – steadfast in allegiance – faithful – staunch – unwavering

you all cry like little bitches at a 1-2 start and things aren’t going the way you precious princesses think they should – boo freakin who – time to suck it up – buckle down and really get behind the team you profess your loyalty to – loyal means for better or worse richer (oops – that’s a wedding vow (smile that’s a joke)) – loyal means we love them when things go wrong and we love them when things go right – loyal does not mean you sit around bashing the owner, the president, the GM, the coaching staff half the starting defense and half the starting offense and call everyone names and say they suck – that my friend is not ‘loyal’

A man can learn a lot from animals – I am going to use a dog analogy but I am sure some jackass is going to make a Vick reference –

dogs – now that my friend is loyal – most of the people on this site – fair weather fans – actually putting in print the eagles are going to lose – hoping that the team tanks so the coach can get fired – then making the lame ass excuse that ‘well maybe it will get better after the team sucks and we fire the coach’ no Big E – loyal would be cheering harder, hoping harder, finding everything lucky you have in the world for the eagles to right the ship and win – don’t ever place yourself in the category of ‘loyal’ I am offended you wopuld include yourself with us loyal ‘kool aid drinking Andy Ried butt licking, fo ass kissing Dave Spadaro wanna be, schilling for the eagles FO’ sheckle counting loser’ who actually thinks that our job is fan is to cheer our team –

Micah – I’ve been a long time admirer of your assessements and insights. Keep doing what you’re doing.
I’ve long had reservations re. Vick for just the reasons you noted above. The Eagles “gifted” him with $40 million that he didn’t deserve and will never earn.

Before the season started, I predicted that the Birds would, indeed, make it to the play-offs and that they would be led by an experienced, talented, and athletic QB … Vince Young. 3 weeks in and I stand by the prediction.

Oh, and contrary to Howard Mudd’s apparent belief – Jason Kelce is NOT the next Jeff Saturday … but it would be nice if he was.

Navy, all these players who came here weren’t loyal to their teams. I sat through seasons at the Vet where it rained every home game and every home game was lost. Those days have come to an end. When fans take the game more seriously than the team, it’s time to stop believing in fantasies. Note in my statement I did not refer to myself as a loyal fan. I am not foolish enough to believe screaming and exhorting the team in front of a TV set will help them one iota. Players used to play for the love of the game and had second jobs. Now they play for the love of the money. Watching Reid coach and the players lacking basic football skills has gotten old for me.

I’m tired of seeing the Eagles in other teams highlight films. By the time you get to the NFL you should be able to tackle as a defensive player, not get swatted like a bug as Allen did. The same old shit we have to do a better job. We have to stress fundamentals. Who believes that shit any more. 30th against the run. High powered offense with so many weapons firing blanks.

Things going wrong with the bounce of the ball or weather are fine but not when the level of play is amatuerish and the mistakes in judgement continue from coaches year after year. Stupid challenges-worst in league. Failure of a hurry up offense. Failure to score in red zone because of idiotic play calling and lack of vision. Failure to draft quality linebackers. Failure to protect your QB. Sloppy pass patterns and giving up on plays. Failure to get off blocks.

Most of these players know nothing about Eagles-Giants rivalry and most don’t care. Half the offense and defense is new. DRC saying in an interview that the Giants wanted the game more than the Eagles in a casual now lets eat attitude
and Eagles fans being upset for days just doesn’t jive in my book’ so cut out these lectures.

FFF, welcome! BTW, you are correct! Jeff Saturday he isn’t! That entire O-line is atrocious, from LG to RT! Same as last year! Except Herremans is a little bit of an upgrade over Winston “I give you no” Justice.

Big E – interesting points, you basically admitted that a lot of what upsets you is actually with the modern NFL and not specifically the Eagles. I can’t disagree with the fact that the money is just stupid and hurts the game. I too think giving Vick the money only hurt his chances to play well – he has played much worse since the contract, no question. It’s better for Vick to see himself as an underdog disgruntled player rather than a multimillionaire superstar franchise QB. No question. Sucks for us now…

Navy – yep, panicking after three games is the sign of a true baby. Less than 25% makes the hundred? nope. But let’s not be surprised, it’s philly where a sports writer once termed ‘ID people” – nuff said
