Reid and Banner Say Johnson Left A Legacy

Jim was talking about the start of training camp up until the end Andy Reid said.  He had the dates of the start and finish of this year's training camp stamped in his mind and they were on his mind until he passed.

Andy said he had talked to Jim a couple of days ago and they discussed his cancer treatment and what was going on with the football team. Despite his physical ailments, he was still talking football.

Reid and Banner went to visit him last night but he had lost the ability to speak.  All he could do was listen.

This evening they talked about Jim being a "football guy" who lived, ate and slept football.  His life was football and his family.

If he wasn't working at football then he was doing something with his family.  Jim had fun playing with his twin grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

I just finished listening to Andy Reid and Joe Banner talk about the passing of Jim.  Reid talked about Jim's personality and the way he was so brutally honest.

Reid spotted Johnson when Andy was an assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers and Johnson was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts.  The Packers had an outstanding team which went into Indianapolis to play a bad Colts team.

Big Red said the Johnson-led Colt defense took them apart with his bitlzes and he never forgot him.

When he got the Eagles head coaching job, the first guy he wanted on his staff was Jim Johnson.

Banner said that the pre-Reid Eagles had experienced a similar offensive disaster when they had taken a team to Indy to play a Johnson-led defense that was supposedly down because of injuries.

The Birds president says Johnson's defense destroyed the Eagles offense and they cleaned the Eagles' clocks.  Joe said he and Jeffrey Lurie smiled when Reid brought up Johnson's name as a defensive coordinator.

The Eagles head coach said he never had an argument with Jim in the more than ten years that they coached together.

He said Jim made things easy for him as a young head coach because he got in behind everything he asked him to do.

Andy talked about how feisty Jim was even though he was getting up there in the years.  He laughed about how other guys mellowed  out and they got older but "Jim's stinger got bigger and bigger".

He would get after his players but they loved him for it because he was so honest with them.  He would praise them when they played well but chew them out when they played poorly.

Reid talked about the patience he had in teaching his defense to Ron Rivera, Leslie Frazier, Steve Spagnuolo and now Sean McDermott.  He said he took time to break down the defense with them and teach the detail of his schemes.

Andy said that's the reason his coaching assistants have gone on a been so successful.

The head coach and team president said they have been swamped with calls, emails, and text messages from people who have nothing but good things to say about Jim Johnson.

I can tell you for a fact that the guys who played for Jim think the world of him.
