I think we're going to see the Eagles tight ends, Brent Celek and Cornelius Ingram be kept quite busy by Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg. They both bring a dimension to the offense that was missing with L.J. Smith.
Celek has shown time and again that he can find the gaps in the zone coverages in the middle of the field. The former Cincinnati star has a good set of hands and is willing to take a pounding if it means making a big catch.
Celek is starting to get the feel for working the middle of the field against zone coverages. Tight ends have to develop an instinct for getting open over the middle with linebackers climbing all over them and trying to knock them out.
They have to use their bodies to screen the defender off much like a post player does in basketball.
Brent has Donovan's confidence so McNabb has no problem trying to get the ball to him through very small windows. If Celek has a half-step on a linebacker, Five is letting it go.
Brent caught a couple passes this week with the linebacker missing knocking it down by a centimeter. After catching the passes from McNabb he was off to the races. He rumbled and stumbled for gains of 30 and 40 yards.
This offense doesn't need the spectacular play from Celek. They need him to be dependable and steady, in much the same way that Chad Lewis played. He's got to help move the sticks on 3rd and three, four, five and six yards.
Backing up Celek is Ingram who from a pure athletic standpoint is even more impressive than Celek. The young man has speed, leaping ability and a great pair of hands, plus he can make the spectacular play.
On one route today, Ingram did a great job of selling the middle linebacker on a square out move then he headed back upfield on a seam route and made a diving catch. You can tell he's getting the timing and feel for those routes.
I'm starting to believe that wherever the ball is thrown, Ingram can come down with it.
They're planning on featuring him in the red zone.
The one area where these two are going to have to prove themselves will be as blockers.
They're working on it, I'll keep you posted on how they're progressing.
