Eagles Must Deal With Internal Conflict Above All Else

“Dejected,” if you had to guess, that perhaps may be the best word to describe how Eagles fans must be feeling after their team’s second half capitulation against the San Fransicsco 49ers, at home.

The fans have every right to feel this way too, with all the hype and expectations usually reserved for a defending champion, the Eagles came into this season as the team to watch. And while some of the scrutiny that stems from comments made by their third string quarterback may be a tad unwarranted, the heavy criticism coming from the vast majority of detractors and admirers is not.

As of right now, the Eagles have become the epitome of an “all style no substance team,” underachievers of a high degree.

For moments during the San Fran game it looked as if Michael Vick was toying with the Niners defense, throwing deep balls for fun in what looked like a guaranteed W, but as we learn week after week, there are no guaranteed W’s in this league, nor is there ever a time to let your guard down in the NFL, especially not at half time when your team needs a vital win.

Indeed the Eagles looked like they were showing that all important quality that most great teams in the league have, that “bouncebackability,” a word that may not be known to Webster’s but is all too familiar for sports fans.

That “bouncebackability” dissipated, when the 3rd quarter began, and the sad, unfortunate, and at times, unbelievable reality began to sink in again. All of the sudden, the Eagles secondary couldn’t tackle anymore, the middle was free to run through, another tight end was allowed to put on a second half show, and the Red zone offense became non-existent, again.

At times, us fans of the game, who look at the sport taking into count more emotional effects than statistics can show, can often be guilty of making rash and baseless assumptions about certain players’ psyche. This time around though, there’s no need for us to even guess.

“I think it was a little bit too happy in here,” said Eagles linemen Cullen Jenkins, about the Eagles locker room at halftime. “Just because you’ve got a lead in the game doesn’t mean you’ve played a good game.”

“The biggest thing we’re missing in here is the attitude,” he continued. “There’s not that fire, that mental toughness that makes you think you’re going to make it happen. And we’ve got to get that. At some point, the man in you has to come out.”

Straight from the horse’s mouth, comes an indictment of a team for which we thought had some mental issues, but also for a team that we now know has some internal conflicts to overcome.

The 1-2 Eagles (now 1-3), came out of halftime in front of it’s own fans, needing a win, and yet as complacent as, well as Cullen Jenkins’ words would have you to believe.

And for that, there is now a price to be paid. There are many around the league who will not take the Eagles as serious contenders after yesterday’s showing, and there are others who may still hold out hope on Philly, but will need a bit of proof to vindicate their faith.

As if they didn’t before, the Eagles have something to prove now. Pride, and respect is at stake and it is most definitely is “gut check” time for the birds.

This season is far from lost and there may still be high hopes to be had for this team yet. The time for Philly to remind us of that can linger no longer, because quite frankly, the Eagles just may not be able to afford itCul

Let’s get a look at the rookie Jarrett …he can’t be any worse…it’s time to start looking at what players to keep…Hell Page and Allen are garbage anyway.

Put lil Fabio back in there.

Eagles have added several high profile fist on chest pumping look at me guys the last couple of years (no names but 3 stand out). I’ve been saying since last year that there’s an attitude of “we da best” that’s been creeping into this team.

Cancer.

Could the Monday night game vs Wsh actually one of the worst hings that could have happened to the Birds? I’m serious. Too much press.

I don’t think the NYG comeback did the team any favours either. They had their asses handed to them for 80% of that game, but all they’ve heard (2 guys in particular) was how great and unstoppable they were since that game.

Vinnie, I sort of agree with you. I think a lot of it is because of the lack of leadership and the incoming of new, younger players. We’ve been use to having veterans all around this team for years. But over the past few years the team has gotten a lot younger and it shows in their maturity sometimes. We don’t have those vets on the team to calm the youth down and talk to you. And then it doesn’t help when your veteran players like Samuel are showboats themselves. But for the most part veteran guys like Nnamdi and Cole aren’t showboats BUT they don’t have the leadership qualities where other players take from their attitude like a lot of other teams have. Having said that, there are only a couple players on the team I would say have an attitude that could be perceived as being cocky. I would be fine with that if it were balanced off by strong player leadership on the field. We don’t have that.

I think a plyer like Jenkins (who has won a ring with the Packers) is calling out soft players who disappear when it counts (like Trent Cole,M Patterson and A Dixon) and need to show more attitude and it’s ruffling seom feathers..
there are no leader types at the LB and even Secondaty level.. Q Mickell was th glue that held that back-end together and A Samuel just does his own thinkg and is not a leader type ad Asmo looks so lost, and playing poorly, that he has little confridence or credibility… DCR is playing out his contract and will leave via Free-Agency as soon as next off-season comes and wants a chance to shine and showcase his skills which he won’t be able to do being the 3rd CB on the Eagles…
It’s just a mess.. no Veteran Leadership with the players who you would expect to hear it from, but it;s not happeneing…

The Eagles have no heart and these are the players that were drafted by the head coach and Howie. You need to draft players who are aggressive and have a football attitude, not wimps who beat their chests after a catch in a losing game. The whole defensive backfield doesn’t have one solid smash mouthed tackler and on top of that they aren’t covering so good. None of the linebackers strike fear in rhe opposing tean but the opposing offense does salivate when they see opportunities to gash them for big plays and run them over. You see Desaun Jackson talking trash and beating his chest like a fool.
You see Juan Cheerleader jumping up and down like a monkey after every play propably with the 32nd ranked defense. This team is embarrasing the City and it’s fans. The dumb plays at the goal line show how clueless the coaches are after all those years of coaching. When the fans recognize their stupidity before they do something is drastically wrong.

@paulman – Trent Cole, although absent yesterday, has been the fireplug for the defense for the past 4 seasons…Patterson is a waste of space and a paycheck..he sucks! Another wasted pick by Reid and company….

As for Jarrett, he is not an NFL player..there is a reason he isnt dressed…. Roseman needs to be replaced with a legit GM, this isnt fantasy football. This scouting department has done an awful job at talent evaluation these past few drafts and its killing this team… they have no depth and by the 4th quarter they are “done”.

I think Jenkins was calling out players on his side of the ball that Bail and Play soft down the Stretch of games and in particular his Defensive Linemates for he knows as most of us do that the success of the team hinges on the front 4 who have yet to play a solid 60 minutes of Football… and it’s all of them too… Maybe with Tapp and Parker, they will get a little lift, but what has Patterson,Laws,Dixon done so far this season and what has Cole done in the 4th quarter besides his usual fade out…

Vick isnt cocky nor is he young. Great article. And great posts. Vick has had nothing to do with this horrible start. He ate his own teeth for three games and put on a clinic yesterday. This whole debacle is our defense. The Asamouagh transaction has been nothing short of a disaster. I cant understand how some of you guys lay this at Vick’s feet when he has done everything except play Safety. Our defense and Juan Castillo are a joke, plain and simple. Back off Michael Vick, he’s doing all he can and our defense is relying on him too so they can get a free check week in and week out.

Now after 4 games with Cole and other D lineman out and hurt, The defense will get worse, but how can you get worse when you are at the bottom already. Big E – I seriously want to thank you for phrasing the following post of yours the way you did: “I remember Schiller defended the Juan Cheerleader hiring because it was too early to cast judgement on him because he hadn’t started.”

That to me is a perfect, prime!, example of where you (and several people I often get into arguements on this site with) and I differ.

I was not defending anyone in that case. I was making a statement about the sample size to evaluate (‘cast judgement’ is a negative phrase, notice how ‘evalute’ is neutral). I didn’t say ‘Juan Castillo was a great decision for DC. I didn’t say ‘He will succeed and be a good DC’. All I said was it is foolish and silly to cast judgement before any content. That’s a fact.

You know that expression “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, well you judge books before they’re authored!

If you told me that Desan Jackson’s grandson will suck at football, I’d say that’s ridiculous because the kid isn’t born yet. I’m not defending the son of Desan Jackson, I’m making a comment about your prejudgement.

Do you see that difference? It’s a very significant difference. It explains how I can say the things that I do without defending or expressing support for coaches and or front office personel. There’s a distinction between assessment and the subject of said assessment. I really hope that you get that now, it wiill help you and many other understand my points much much better.

Stevo = the most brilliant, profound statement on this site in weeks! I admit – i was wrong – I thought the Eagles would be 3-1 and in first place. I admit, I thought our D was going to be really solid – maybe give up some runs with the young LBs – but take away the pass and big play and keep teams out of the end zone. I admit – i thought our O would be unstoppable and we would be racking up 35 a game. I admit I thought this team looked really good coming out of the gate and after St Louis and the first 3 qtrs of Atlanta I thought – this outta shut up Songs for a while – I admit – I was wrong….

Right now this team sucks…. you douche bag no nothings fire everybody, everybody is ass are in my humble opinion band wagon jumping, fair weather fans – oh… its the same thing… oh Andy can’t draft… ohh Andy makes the guy jerk off left handed when in Oakland he was a reach around and fondle masaterbater…. oh Juan hasn’t been a D C for 100 years… oh where is Jon Gruden… oh,,,, oh…. oh ground hog day, let me make up a stupid nickname … oh the Fo aren’t football people —- it has to be this persons fault or that persons fault –

Bottom line is all 53 on the roster (including Vinve Young for that STUPID dream team comment) all 8 on practice squad and every memeber of the FO need to take a long hard look in the mirror and decide if they want to show up to work today and tommorrow

and the same goes for the ‘fans’. Don’t give me this ‘rationalized’ version of its OK I hope the team does really really bad so we get better bullshit – no fan, ever, no real, die hard, bleed green fan would ever ‘want’ the team to do bad.. get with the program – we have the coaches we have, the players we have, the team we have here and now and a game Sunday – the only way to get this ship going in the right direction is to get focused and win – this week –

we can worry about the rest when the season is over.

Yeah BSM – that will help – great ‘insight’

One of my greatest coaching years our team started 1-2 and got crushed in those two loses – crushed (30-0) we came back – won the next 6 gamnes – the last 4 by shoutout to make the playoffs – and then beat the team that beat us 30-0 – and we shut them out 10-0. Maybe I don’t know how to give up – that must be my problem – probably why I was so successful in Football as a player and a coach…

October 4, 2011 1:01 pm

Stevo, I fully agree with you. It’s like some people come on here just to say “I told you so”. I do however think those that predicted doom or whatever, are just as upset as those that were more optimistic. I can see when you have people like Navy and Schiller telling everyone their opinion stinks and just about agree or make excuses for this organization it’s hard to not say “I told you so” especially when they do it so often. Schiller was one of the first people to act as if he someone did something great when the Eagles signed all those people in offseason. He was quick to jump on those people that called the FO cheap. So of course that was his “I told you so” moment.

If fans weren’t so critical of each other’s opinion then we wouldn’t have that as much. But when you have those that are complete polar opposites in their opinions with the team and at the same time insult each other everyone is ready for their “I told you so” moment. The fact of the matter is that we’ve all be right at times and wrong at times and for different reasons and it is disgusting that some people like Vinnie rather see Vick fail because he doesn’t like him and that type of QB but claim to be an Eagle’s fan in the same breath. But if Vick fails or plays bad he gets to posts how he was right the entire time. Just sad.

At the end of the day, I think we all want the team to succeed. Even the most pessimistic person would love to be proven wrong if that meant a championship. The problem is this team does everything it’s power week to week to divide fans and bring out the “I told you so” in all the people that really believe Reid can’t do it. But what would be more interesting is that if Reid did win, I’m pretty sure those that supported him will say…… well you know.

Anyone want to bet that the BIlls put 35 Points + on this Eagle Defense this week.. They lost last weak to a overmatched but hungry Bengal team on the road, so their big heads after beating nemesis New England are long gone and they will prepare ahard and HC/OC Chan Gailley is licking his chops puttting together a game plan versus thie Eagle Defense.. Expect lots of 4 wide and slants to the slot recivers to the middle of th field yielding big plays like the 49ers 1st TD where he catches a 7 yard slant and virtually runs in 30 yards untouched which is unbelieveable to happen in the NFL in my opintion.. Then a few deep passes to Steve Johnson past a befuddled Asmo and then the Tight End Chandler with 15 yard Button Hooks and DOwn and outs all game long and ooh I forgot to mention both RB’s Fred Jacksons and CJ Spiller runing for 60-80 Yards each and turning a coupld of screen passes for big yards and potential TD plays… This game will be 38-27 or 41 to 30 but the BIlls win as the Eagles come back to score some late points to make the final score closer than the actual game was,,, and then I will be repeating the same story that this Eagle Team is just not that good and that the Playoffs chances become even more remote and the Team would need to run the Table to get in which isn’t going to happen…

Here’s what I know personally after years of watching and supporting Reid.

Every year Reid injects himself and gets in the way of the prize.

EVERY TIME!

Remember the Blaine Bishop coming while Jeremiah Trotter leave debacle?

Jurevicus is still running.

That was a big year!!!!!!

Reid got in the way and punctuated the situation by abandoning the run.

Tampa Bay wins!!!!!!!!

Remember the year we were told our reciever’s were just fine?

Damn midget from carolina wouldn’t let Pinky off the line.

Stifled!!!!!! Panther’s win!!!!

Finally we get T.O….in the Superbowl leading by 3 at the half.

We’re in position to get within striking to win it all time ticking against us.

Andy don’t go to the 2 minute drill but take his sweet time getting in plays.

“WE SCORE”!!!!!!

But the majority of the CLOCK have expired.

We lose again.

This is what we come to expect with Andy Reid..

So when the 49ers scored twice after halftime…Was any of you surprised Alex Smith looked like Montana against our team and pulled out a win?

I wasn’t the least surprised.

This is what we as fans are use to.

Failed special teams coach Segrest rewarded with a job over the secondary…the secondary sucks once he put over them. Expected an improvement? …..I didn’t

Reno Mahe put in charge of return duty while the position is being ignored…

We’re screaming for a return guy!!!!!

Drop 2 games in a row due to poor return plays with fumbles that cost us.

I can go on and on…..we were here with Mcdermott..Andy said he’s the guy who worked close to JJ because we didn’t protect Spags like most teams do with up and coming coaches.

McDermott is “outta here”.

Now, it’s the damn woeful offensive line coach over the defense?

Come on guys…Even the most starch supporter of Reid must admit something is flawed in his thinking in key areas that can make or break a team and waste a promising season.

Reid can not get out of the way!

It would serve the Eagles Brass by letting Reid do what he do best and put others in position where he’s clearly flawed.

I think he earned an organizational position somewhere within the Eagles Brass but it’s time to let a real game day coach, coach this team. We need a field general that will not take crap. We need coaches who have pedigree in positions as coaches.

We need a change

Reid should be that change and he can take his caddys Don Juan Castillo and Marty Morning Breath with him.

Songs – “schiller, what’s your thought about Reid “sucking hard” in the red zone, short yardage situations, time management, and knowing when to challenge for reviews?”

First, I disagree with them sucking at short yardage situations and challenges.

Short yardage – that was a major issue for years in the past. I honestly feel that from when they signed Weaver (he was great at it), Vick – same even when it was all he ever did, McCoy – very good at it, harrison – same…. etc… I don’t think it’s been an issue. There will be times when every team – even the Steelers and other strong running teams – fail to convert a short yardage play. I feel however that the Eagles are not below average at it. If you’re strictly talking about pounding it directly up the middle with this current OL, well yeah, they’re small interior so that’s an issue. But Vick, McCoy, and many others – DJax on a stretch…to the corners? We’re great at it.

And challenges – see navy’s stats you can ignore them all you want but Reid isn’t that bad at it. He’s just not. Yeah, there will be times where he should have and didn’t challenge and times when he throws the yellow flag and is wrong. But it’s very challenging and it’s easy for fans to have a better view of it. I do think that Reid, and every coach, should consider getting an assistant to do it full time – ala tressell I believe it is who was hired to do it for a team this year but was suspended for violating rules in college?

The other stuff – dunno, it sucks. Wish and hope it would improve.

Schill..if you were in position,….What would you do to improve the other stuff…instead of hoping things improve?

If you were a head coach would you put a guy who was argubly over the worse offensive line in the league as defensive coordinator?

Do you think Juan “Sucks Ass?”

Can I play songs – if I could sprinkle magic pixie dust and live in your world of make believe –

cut down on turnovers……. we are avergaing waht 3 a game – no picks, no fumbles

2) No dropped passes – for a team that passes so much we have got to catch the ball and then HOLD IT

3) penalties – got to cut down on the free 15 yarders…

pretty basic solid stuff right – play good, clean football and then see what happens….

ESPN did an article a while back on how the teams do replays (challenege them) – and Ried uses an assistant – according to the article – didn’t say which one – but apparently they are at the mercy of the TV replay crews to show the replays and they have to find the right angle to challenge or not challenege – and the other team is either 1) running a play quickly or 2) you are up against the play clock.

songs – that’s the difference between us – I tend to not play ‘arm chair’ coach. I don’t have the training, the experience, the expertise, the film, the access to the players and a whole buttload of other resources Reid, and any head coach, does.

But it seems like many fans, not just you specifically, act like they have just as much ability to make the decisions.

About Juan – first I don’t think he was the very best OL in the league. But I certainly do not think he was the worst, or that his Ol was the worst – or even close to it. There were many teams with worse OLs during Juan’s tenure, including last year. Songs this is an example where either your bias (it’s cool we all have biases, I certainly do, and yours is clear as day an known to all) is SERIOUSLY skewing your perception, OR you’re just exaggerating out of emotion from the Eagles sucking it up recently. But either way – suggesting that Juan was a bad idea because he a bad OL coach in the first place is stretching it big time.

I don’t think that ‘Juan sucks ass’. I think that some aspects of the defense in the 4 games so far have sucked ass. I KNOW that you can’t tell if a coach in a new role sucks ass in four games. I KNOW that you can opine or guess if a coach is good after only four games, and your guess/opinion may turn out to hold true over time. But I Know that you’re harping an a conclusion that you jumped to at a point that is too early for accurate assessment.

Dude, the Eagles f-d up big time in the last 3 games. NO DOUBT. And if the trend continues, they’re in trouble for sure. But you’re (characteristicly) looking for blame and solutions now. That’s your perogative, you like to do that. And you’re free to. But I think a football team needs time and opportunities to develop/improve and make changes. It’s Tuesday. They don’t play till Sunday. There’s 0 things that you or I can do or say today that will influence anything about the Eagles. So you can talk, or question all you like and it won’t do anything. I personally don’t like to waste the time.
