Can This Year’s Eagles Squad Make The Playoffs?

The Eagles are back to work and while the bye week may have helped heal some aches and pains which were felt by many of the players, it doesn’t take away the fact that the Birds are a disappointing 2-4 after six games. What makes that record an even more difficult pill to swallow is the Birds are probably a Michael Vick headache against Atlanta and a poor fourth quarter against San Francisco from being 4-2 right now.

Obviously what’s done is done, so there’s no going back and changing the outcome of at least two winnable games. Going forward, however, the team knows they must cut down on stupid turnovers, and find ways to stop teams from scoring at will, if they want any chance at making the playoffs. PLAYOFFS??? PLAYOFFS??? Yes, I said playoffs. Believe it or not, this team still has a chance at playing football after January 1st. Luckily for the Eagles, no one in the NFC East has fully taken advantage of the Dream Team’s early struggles and Philly finds itself only two games behind the New York Giants for first place in the division.

Last week’s 20-13 win against the Redskins was huge considering it saved the Eagles from an almost guaranteed season ending 1-5 start as well as giving the team a much needed win within the division. Andy Reid and company entered the bye week on a high note and they always return from the week off ready to play. The Birds are 12-0 in the regular season under Coach Reid after the bye week and this year it will be even more imperative to get a victory after the break.

The first three games after the bye will pretty much determine whether or not the Eagles will have a shot at that elusive Lombardi trophy. All three games are at home, and even though the team is 0-2 so far at the Linc, playing in front of the Philly faithful will definitely be an advantage. Next week will easily be the biggest game of the season to date when the hated Dallas Cowboys come to town. Most Eagles fans would be okay with a 2-14 record as long as the two W’s came against Jerry Jones’ crew. The Cowboys have been inconsistent, and are only a play or two away from having a record even worse than the Eagles.

In order to be successful against their most despised rival, the defense must limit Tony Romo’s production. Romo has had his usual ups and downs this year and if the Eagles can pressure him early and force him into a turnover or two, it will go a long way in getting a W. On offense, it could prove difficult for the Eagles to successfully run the ball against Dallas’ top ranked rushing defense.

In order for LeSean McCoy to be effective, the Birds may need to set him up for some screens or get him out in the flat. Ultimately, the outcome of this game will be determined by turnovers. If the Eagles play sloppy and give the ball away like they did against Buffalo a few weeks ago, they won’t beat Dallas. Vick has to make smart decisions and the offense must sustain drives. If they are successful with that, they should win the game.

After Dallas, the Chicago Bears come to town. The Bears haven’t played well on the road thus far, but they aren’t to be taken lightly. Matt Forte has produced like one of the top five running backs in all of football. He runs the ball, catches the ball, and everything in between. The Eagles have had a tough time stopping effective running backs so limiting the success of Forte should be the teams #1 concern.

Jay Cutler can be a turnover machine and this could be a game where the cornerback trio of Nmandi Asomugha, Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie have a chance to make big plays. On offense, it again comes down to protecting the football. The Bears no longer have the superb defense they boasted a few years ago, but they can still get to the quarterback and cause chaos. Again, it will come down to whether or not the Eagles play smart football. It’s hard to see the Birds not winning this game if they don’t turn the ball over and execute when they have the ball in the red zone.

Week 10 will see the return of Kevin Kolb to Philadelphia with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cards have been one of the few teams in the NFC more disappointing than the Eagles with a 1-5 start on their resume. Kolb has made the Eagles look like geniuses so far with his mediocre play. Kolb is only averaging 7.4 yards per completion and his quarterback rating of 77.2 isn’t reminding anyone in the desert of Kurt Warner.

Luckily for Arizona, Beanie Wells has played extremely well or they could very well be winless on the season through five games. Obviously, this game should be a win for the Birds. Ideally the game plan will be to contain Wells and force Kolb to beat them. While the Cardinals do have some weapons, namely all-world receiver Larry Fitzgerald, the quarterback has yet to show he can make the big play when necessary.

Offensively, the Eagles match up well against Arizona. The Cards are giving up 377 yards per contest with almost 119 of those being on the ground. The Eagles should be able to take advantage of a porous run defense, and a big game by McCoy is almost certain as long as he’s given the chance. We’ve seen Andy Reid inexplicably throw the ball more than he should against teams that have a tough time stopping the run. Hopefully he sees the opportunity to pounce with a strong rushing attack. If they do this, the offense will flourish and the end result should be a victory.

Looking ahead, the Eagles certainly have their work cut out for them if they want to make the playoffs. But with three winnable games after the bye week now is the time to take advantage and make a run. I personally see the Eagles winning their next three games, which will take them to the Meadowlands with a 5-4 record. Anything can happen, and usually Andy Reid’s teams play their best football in November and December. If the trends from past seasons continue, the Eagles could very well see themselves playing meaningful games during the holiday season. And, if the trends from past seasons continue, Eagles fans will eventually have their hearts broken whether this team makes the playoffs or not.

This team will not make the playoffs because there’s other teams in the NFC with superior coachng staffs.

Right now, the Packers,Falcons,49ers,Lions,Bears,Saints,Giants,and Bucs, have better coaching.

Right now, were sitting with teams like Rams, Redskins, Vikings, Cowboys, Panthers.

Look, if there was a situation in which Castillo could be trusted to make halftime, or in game adjustments on the fly in crucial moments the outlook would be more positive….

The reality is folks this is an experiment season.

the Eagles have invested in an offensive line coach who have never coached defense on the collegiate or pro level ever to mold a defense into a Superbowl winning defense.

If we played the Rams and Redskins for the rest of the season we’re shoe to win the Superbowl and Kurt Cloeman’s Bust would be in the mold,,,,But we don’t.

The Stinking Cowboys come into our stadium and show us how pathetic our defensive coordinator is with a rookie runningback running for 150 and Jason Whitten ripping the middle of the field.

Also look for bubble screens to Dez Bryant while Asante plays 20 yards off the line.

The game will be close but we’ll lose a heartbreaker at the end with Jason Whitten catching a game winning touchdown with 30 seconds left on the clock over Kurt Coleman.

Cowboys 27

Eagles 24

Reid takes the blame and insist he must put his players in position to win, and positive Juan tells the media he seen some good things in his young guys and they’re really playing hard out there.

He’ll also repeat how the defense will come near the end of the season like most winning teams that take shape near playoff time.

GO EAGLES!

Who talks about making the playoffs when you have
“Bozo the clown” as your defensive coordinator
and “Coach Dufus” running the show.

I said over the summer that you could give Andy Reid the NFC Pro-bowl team and he would still lose. Now with 6 probowlers on his defense, they stink.

Yes the Eagles will play better. They will get your hopes up as the season goes along, then the “Force of Fat” will find a way to lose that no other coach in NFL history has.

Need a few examples see Vikings game last year losing to a rookie QB and rookie coach at home.

Trading out of the first round

Drafting a 27 year old offense stiff in the first round

hiring a offensive line coach as your defensive line coach…oh sorry

as your defensive coordinator.

Unlucky 13 years of Eagle time wasted by “the biggest loser”.

A dome or west coast roster built for speed playing on the East Coast. A moron.

Why do the haters focus on the far future – thus ignoring the fact that once late decembmer comes around, things between now and then will change the context of everything? Is it a lack of intelligence? A complete disregard for what they experienced every football season before this one as fans (the league in week 7 doesn’t look like the league in week 17)…?

And BSM – put your silly preferences and emotions aside. You ‘don’t like’ the guy, so the fact that he wins MUCH more than the other coaches get’s thrown out with the trash? You’d rather like the coach and have the team suck? It seems that way. How many playoff wins did Buddy Ryan have with the Eagles?

Schill…We focus on the far future because anything less than a Superbowl appearance is failure.

We’ve sleep walked through many seasons just to end up lost and disappointed, or an early exit altogether.

Now, we can actually look forward to next season because Reid’s decision to give the defensive reigns to his failed offensive line coach, coupled with a reshuffled offensive line including a first round 27 year old fireman who couldn’t start the season, along with moving our starting linebacker to experiment with a 4th round bum at linebacker..have dug us a hole we will not get out of.

The 49ers & Falcons losses were in direct result of Andy’s off season decisions.

If McDermott was still coordinator those games wouldn’t have been close.

We need a change…

If Andy is the coach next season I will root for every team the Eagles play until he’s gone.

This was the 1st season I refused to buy any paraphanelia or year book from the Eagles.

I cancelled my Eagles Newspaper subscription i held for 17 years.

I will not go to another game or support this team financially until Andy and his compadres are gone.

This year no financial support….Next year if he’s here I will go to every public event Andy is obligated to speak at and heckle the hell out of him and root for his demise.

FANS NEED TO MAKE MORE SIGNS “FIRE ANDY”…TO WAVE OUTSIDE THE NOVACARE COMPLEX!

Schill, I don’t give a damn how many rings Buddy won.

He have won the same amount of Superbowls Andy have with less time being head coach.

At least his teams had fire and passion, excitement.

And at least he wasn’t a front office puppet. If we have to lose at least have a team that’s fired up with a coach that takes no prisoners.

Buddy, made football fun again in Philadelphia after years of obsurity.

He built a defense the represents Philadelphia…Then we had Bud Carson defense which represented the blue nose football followers…then Ray Rhodes came with a tough defensive footbal philosophy.

The best thing Andy did was hire “JJ”..but now he’s tarnished the philadelphia defensive brand with a failed offensve line coach.

That shows Andy have lost respect for what’s important here in Philadelphia.

We have 6 Pro bowlers on the defensive side of the ball and look where we’re ranked.

It’s like finding a precious rock that could be worth millions with an expert diamond cutter…..

But to show I’m smarter than everyone hire a butcher to cut the diamond because he claimed he had lunch with the screenwriter of the movie “blood diamond”.

Ridiculous.

I have switched my medications and I now predict an Eagles Blowout win over the hated Cowboys… Eagles 41-Cowboys 20
Vick has a big game where all the WR contribute and McCoy/Lewis have big games as well.. .Cole,Babin each get 2 Sacks on Romo and create 2 Fumbles as well as 2 Int’s by the Secondary..
Rookie RB D Murray off his big game versus the Rams has 28 yards on 12 carries as Cowboy become 1 Dimensional and score a late TD in garbage time to make the final score…
It”s the biggest win of the Season so far as the Eagles inprove to 3-4 and improve their NFC East Diivisional Record to 2-1 and NFC Conferernce Record to 3-3.. The Eagles fight to play another week and face the Bears next.. A slip up or loss to the Bears makes this Cowboy win meaningless, the EAgles continue their march of high exection, error free Football.,,
Coach AR gets applauded for keeping team together and Lurie/Banner announce a “Lifetime Contract” for HC A Reid to Coach the Eagles..

Songs, you are a person, so don’t get confused when I say the following – YOU SPEAK FOOLISHLY. I’m not calling you a fool, but I am calling your statements and questions foolish. VERY foolish.

First, if you think that Andy Reid, Lurie or anybody on the Eagles or in the city for that matter is unaware that some fans want Reid fired – THAT’S FOOLISH. If you think that a sign out front of the Novacare Complex, or stating so in any other way in any other place or context will increase awareness of that – THAT’S FOOLISH. If you think that they might fire Reid during this season by any slim chance – THAT’S FOOLISH. So therefore, your suggest is entirely FOOLISH. It would accomplish ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. The only possible difference would be some kind of pathetic catharsis on your part.

Look, I don’t disagree that the season will be viewed as a failure if they don’t make the superbowl, but to think that means that we can speak with knowledge about the future is FOOLISH. We all have to WAIT and SEE WHAT HAPPENS! That goes for the haters to the most head-over-heals Koolaid drinker who has season tickets, buys merch every game and swoons for the front office.

…”have dug us a hole we will not get out of” – THAT’S FOOLISH – it’s by definition, fortune telling. FOOLISH

“If McDermott was still coordinator those games wouldn’t have been close.
We need a change…” You hypocritical numbskull (I am calling YOU that here) – you yourself, and many others, said last year that McDermott was not doing a good job (in fact, you said it much more harshly) and that he had to go – that ‘we need a change’ – you got your change, and you have given it an insufficient sample size to evaluate it (SCIENTIFIC FACT). You sir always covet the ‘grass on the other side’ because ‘it’s always greener’….That’s FOOLISH

You can’t know the future and you can’t influence a pro team to do what you want – especially when they already SUFFICIENTLY are aware of your opinion. – thinking otherwise is FOOLISH

Suck it up and watch the season. The Eagles might win the division and they might improve significantly. It’s happened many times for teams to significantly improve from the first few weeks to the end of the season. If that happens, and I’m not saying it will, but I sure as hell am saying it can and might – then all they have to do is win the division or get a wildcard. The rest comes down to what happens on the field with that oblong ball and ‘any given sunday’.

None of these Andy experiments ever work…can’t you see that?

What experiment Andy tried worked?

Segrest to Special teams coach to defensive back coach – failure.

Gocong sack master in college drafted and switched to a standup linebacker to cover tight ends – failure

Reno Mahe – Greg Lewis punt/kick returner – failure

Sean McDermott replacing JJ instead of getting a veteran defensive signal caller – failure

A failed offensive line coach with one of the worse offensive lines in the league get’s rewarded with a promotion to coach the defense.

Juan Castillo – Another Andy Reid failure.

Who pays the price?

Songs you are just the most ignorant, double standard mother fer that ever existed – LEARN YOUR GOOD DAMN EAGLES FOOTBALL –

1989-1990
The following two years would see playoff appearances as well, but the team could not make it past the first round. This failure was greatly frustrating to many Eagles fans, as the team was commonly acknowledged as among the most talented in the NFL. On offense, the Eagles were led by quarterback Cunningham, one of the most exciting players of his generation; tight end Keith Jackson; and running back Keith Byars. The defense is commonly acknowledged as among the greatest in league history, and as the best never to win a championship.

Buddy Ryan was fired at the end of the 1990 season. Despite his tough talk, the Eagles failed to win a playoff game in the five years he had been head coach.
Oh – so Buddy ‘talked’ tough and Buddy was great at ‘Bounty Bowls’ and Body bag games – of course that would impress the mindless rabble like yourself – and then he would LOSE as soon as he got to the playoffs –

So why is it Buddy Ryan gets a free pass – because he was a great bullshitter with the press – funny with the quips, Buddy couldn’t win any playoff games – WITH THE MOST TALENT LADEN TEAM IN THE NFL –
why with AR is it ‘SB or failure’

you are so full of shit!

Whatever happened to Reid, the great QB instructor?

Were it not for Vick’s natural abilities, this team would be 0-5. And when Donovan was young, he carried this team with his natural abilities (along with Westbrook).

Kolb lasted all of one game because of his lack of natural ability. They’re almost ready to bench him in Arizona.

I’ve said for a few years now that the Eagles won in spite of Reid, not because of him, and he is proving it more and more with each passing week.

The same problems that many blamed Donovan for still haunt the Eagles to this day, ie., red zone, time management, holding the ball too long, etc.

Last week, Reid finally called a short passing game in the 1st half against the Redskins (reminiscent of Kolb’s game against Atlanta 2 years ago – in which the Birds ran the ball 50 times). The results were great – kept Vick from getting clobbered and the running game was on point. So what did Reid do in the 2nd half . . . need I say more.

If so, I’ll say this and leave it alone. Reid is garbage!

Navy,

the patties are a tough one to understand because they seem like they are clicking and then boom- something stupid.

On D- the eagles should bait Romo. This could be a huge game for asam if he doesnt get killed on the bubble screens again. And i think thats exactly what they will do….. run up the middle and throw bubble screens outside. But if they can sustain pressure from the DE’s, Romo will wet the bed. I see 2 or 3 picks on D and 3 or more sacks. If the birds get up by 10 or so early…. we may see LOADS more sacks. They will run on us and we NEED to be able to tackle at the LB level. 4 yards a carry and we are still ok…. but if we are watching failed leg tackles again sunday we may get killed.

On O- the key (as always) will be a balnced attack early. I would still take my shots down field but i would ONLY do it over the top. Their CB’s are not very good but we dont need to make them look good with a throw underneath to Maklin. Id let the speed of our WR’s take them deep on the first series but it HAS TO BE OVER THE FF and SS.

clearly our team has not “clicked” yet this year. I think they can jump start that this week if they can tackle and if Vick doesnt turn in over 3 or more times.

I think Jarrad could be a player and a killer on special teams if they give him a shot but still mfeel he was a reach in the 2nd round.

He’ll do well If the Eagles give him playing time but the way the league is calling the games now may be against his greatest asset..He hits to slow recievers down as the game go on.

They need to play him during the game just to send a message for recievers coming over the middle.

stevo…to tell you the truth every Eagle fan will have their eye on this game knowing if we lose the season is done.

There’s tenative optimism for most..Me on the other hand is tired of the same season, different year.

I’m stuck between wanting the player to do well, yet wanting Reid gone.

So, Ive decided to lean towards the latter so I real coach can come in here and win with this talent.

I look at those Bucs teams that were built and Loyal to Dungy, yet Gruden came in there and lifted them pass our Eagles.

I’ll take a coach even if it’s for one season who can come in here and give us that kind of year.

Reid is a good guy but he’s not the one who will get us the ring.

It’s been 12 years already.

I absolutely agree with what was said about Reid here and he should take most of the blame for the losses. However, so far in all but the last game against Washington the performance of this team has been Subpar, not what you would expect from a team full of probowlers.

The Answer is Yes (Mathmatically) but realistically, the Eagles need to go
4-0 over their next 4 games just to have a chance with a 6-4 Overall record.
Next 4 games versus the Cowbys,Bears,Cardinals and Giants must all be Wins or the final 6 Games of the Season won’t make a difference.. Eagles must win the NFC East to make the playoffs abnd for some damn reason, the EAgles just don’t match up well with the Bears

the eagles need to take a ” save our coach mentality ” which i do not think they have . they need to real off a major win streak , if they do they will b 1 hot team headed into playoffs. but paulman is right they need kick ass the next 4 games !
