Source: Donovan wanted Vick

You are seeing more and more people starting to jump up and question whether Donovan McNabb actually wanted Michael Vick in Philly, or if the team was the one that came up with the idea.

Michael Irvin is the latest I've seen to openly question if McNabb really wanted Vick here.

"I had to question that," Irvin told USA Today.  "Did McNabb go to [the team] about Vick, or did they come to him?"

Well, I spoke to a source close to McNabb that said "beyond the shadow of a doubt" Donovan went to the team and lobbied for Vick.  The source said there were two reasons he really wanted Vick in town:  He is friends with Vick and wants to see him succeed, and more importantly, Donovan really wants to win and he thinks adding Vick will help the team a lot.

Now, all that said, the source made it clear that the team didn't sign Vick just because Donovan wanted them to.  They still did their due diligence and obviously had to approve the final decision, but Donovan is absolutely the one who brought up the issue.

As for the throat-slashing gesture during the preseason game Thursday night?  The source says that Donovan just wanted to get the offense going in their most important preseason game. This had nothing to do with pulling the plug on the Vick project.  This had nothing to do with Donovan not wanting Vick here.  Like Donovan has said several times since then, he just wanted to get the offense going at that particular moment.

And he is exactly correct in wanting that.  Vick is probably not available until the fifth game of the season.  Well, doesn't the offense still have to put up points before he's available?  And if the offense sputters early on, who will get the blame?  Exactly.

So, this is another case of a bunch of people speculating about something Donovan did or didn't do.  Let the Michael Irvin's and the talking heads speculate and drum up rumors.  Donovan lobbied for Vick, he's happy that he's here and he wants him to stay here and be involved.
