The one thing the Holiday season also means is Bowl Season. Four weeks of a farewell to a season that saw teams jump conferences, saw a resurgence of Big Ten Football, a demise of a legend and football powerhouse, the continuance of the hybrid quarterbacks rise to the front of the line, and the possibility of one of the most impressive undefeated seasons in a quarter century. It has been a wonderful season. And we have this month of bowl games to celebrate the successes of 70 of the nation’s finest teams. This is by far the greatest sport in the world. So on to the weekends selections.
New Mexico Bowl
Temple -7 vs. Wyoming
Classic matchup of one team’s strength against one team’s weakness. Temple holds a HUGE advantage up front on BOTH sides of the ball. Look for Bernard Pierce to have a HUGE day in what I feel will be his last collegiate game. I think Pierce will be a solid back up at the next level. Temple will play ball control, sustain long drives and wear down Wyoming on both sides of the ball. The boys from North Broad Street are just too physical on both sides of the line and will pound the Cowboy’s interior front. Temple also has a big advantage on Special teams. Everyone knows I put significant emphasis on that. Much more then all the experts.
Predicted Final Score: Temple 41 Wyoming 24
Idaho Potato Bowl
Utah State -1.5 vs Ohio
I like the Bobcats coach. Frank Solich deserves to be coaching at a big time school again. Ohio is a very well balanced offense that does everything well. Utah State relies heavily on the run as they should with stud running back Robert Turbin. Turbin should be a 2nd day draft pick in April’s draft. After analyzing and actually seeing quite a bit of both teams this year, I feel Ohip is just a bit outclassed on both sides of the ball. Plus you have to wonder are they still mentally checked out after blowing a 20 point halftime lead in the MAC championship a week ago. I say it I simpossible to totally block that out of their minds and they may come out flat.
Predicted Final Score : Utah State 35 Ohio 28
New Orleans Bowl
San Diego State -5 vs Louisiana- Lafayette
This is a game of matchups. San Diego State’s Ronnie Hillman is one of the more talented backs in the country. I am not a huge fan of quarterback Ryan Lindley. He has trouble creating his own play when protection breaks down and at times is wildly inaccurate. But the ground game should enable him to use play action and find TE Gavin Escobar to move the chains.
Same scenario for Louisiana Lafayette as quarterback Blaine Gautier will make mistakes if the Aztecs can penetrate and force him to get rid of the ball quickly. Lafayette also has a solid tight end in Ladarius Green who is not afraid to go over the middle and should exploit the Aztecs lack of overall size on defense.
This will be a back and forth type of game. In the end Hillman is the difference. But I’m taking the 5 points here as I feel it’s a field goal game either way.
Predicted Final Score
San Diego State 34 Louisiana Lafayette 31
This is just the beginning of what I am sure will be an exciting four weeks. Doesn’t matter who you root for, its football. It’s become Americas past time. Enjoy the Games everyone !!!!
