As if the Flyers didn’t already have their fair share of injuries to deal with, the puck hit to the head that Sean Couturier took in yesterday’s game is about as scary as they come. The organization sent him to a hospital and announced he will miss the next two games, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw extended time off the ice.
You don’t take a wrister to the temple and walk it off.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren now has to shuffle the deck once again, recalling Adirondack Phantoms forward Ben Holmstrom. Andy Bombach was recalled by the Phantoms from the Trenton Titans to fill their roster.
Holmstrom, captain of the Phantoms, has 8 goals and 16 points in 25 games this season. He will likely center the fourth line and eat up time on the penalty kill now that Giroux and Couturier are hurt and Andreas Nodl is no longer an option.
Danny Briere will likely move to the top line with Scott Hartnell and Jaromir Jagr while Matt Read can center the second line with Jakub Voracek and James Van Riemsdyk.
Max Talbot can center the line the third line with Wayne Simmonds, with either Tom Sestito, Zac Rinaldo or Harry Zolnierczyk moving up with them.
The Flyers also announced today that defenseman Andreas Lilja has finished his conditioning assignment and is back with the team. This is coming off news yesterday that Lilja was scratched because of a wrist injury. Hopefully he just needed the day off to heal a minor injury.
