We got more a glimpse at LeSean McCoy yesterday and we see that he’s not a blazer but a guy who can make you miss with his moves. The jury’s not out on the kid but he started in the right direction and didn’t make any big mistakes.
He was running the ball after getting handoffs and running after getting it from direct snaps. I thought he did a good job of sorting it out and doing his job.
McCoy is a different type of running back than Brian Westbrook because McCoy is bigger and not nearly as fast as BWest. He relies on his change of direction and bursts rather than pure speed.
McCoy will make his living while churning out four and five yards a carry. He’s going to get bigger and stronger which will allow him to wear teams down.
The former Pitt Panther is an inside runner with great vision, who can pick his way inside and avoid taking those head on shots. He’s like Bernard Hopkins, who can fight inside an entire fight yet never get hit cleanly.
You could give him the ball in the second half and let him grind out the first downs and the clock on an opponent that is trailing.
The guy he’ll be taking over from is a different type of back. Westbrook would break a big run every seven to ten carries.
He could explode through a hole make a tackler miss and turn on the accellerator for a sixty or seventy yard run.
During a number of seasons, Westbrook carried the entire offense on his back, but his size allowed all of their carries to take its toll on his body. Hopefully McCoy will be able to hold up against the pounding a bit better.
Westbrook’s style is more like Marshall Faulk as compared to McCoy’s style is more like Emmitt Smith.
Westbrook like Faulk was as good of a receiver as he was a ball carrier whereas McCoy and Smith are better running with the football and controlling the clock.
