The Eagles have signed running back Reno Mahe to be their new punt returner. We used to always say that a punt returner had to be good enough to let the special teams coach sleep the night before the game.
The signing of Reno Mahe will allow Rory Seagrest to sleep the night before the game, but his inability to make big plays will also allow the Redskins special teams coach to sleep the night before the game.
From Brian,
Hey G,
This is just my opinion on what I have seen, but I don't understand why you couldn't just bring back Jeremy Bloom. I know he struggled to make decent returns and find the holes on Kickoffs, but he never dropped the ball, he didn't fumble and he knew when to fair catch. He even took some big hits as a receiver and held on to the ball. This is exactly what Reno Mahe does except he has no speed. He may know how to hit the holes better, but his lack of speed prevents him from doing anything with those opportunities. You obviously know a lot more than me on football, but am I way off on this? If they both understand the position and are pretty sure handed with catching the ball, wouldn't you want the guy with speed??
Love your site, keep up the great work!
Brian,
I think you make a great point, plus I think Bloom's toe limited his speed in the last three preseason games he played. I do agree that he was very good at catching the punts and making decisions. Who knows maybe the kid will let his toe get healthy and come back with somebody.
