Brian Westbrook and Kevin Curtis may be on the field when the game starts on Sunday but they aren’t starting any more for the Birds. They are sharing time with their backups which means there has been a change.
When I hear Andy Reid say about Westbrook, “right now, he’ll rotate in there with LeSean [McCoy]”. I hear that Westbrook is sharing time with McCoy.
It’s a change but it makes sense because Westbrook’s body can’t hold up to the pounding any more.
Having him share time with McCoy will reduce the work load and hopefully keep him healthy for the rest of the year which will probably be his last with the football team.
The Eagles turned down an additional year options on his contract. Hopefully for Westbrook and the football team, he can regain the magic which he has displayed over the last few years.
If he’s healthy it makes the Eagles a much better football team. If the Birds can make the playoffs and have a healthy Westbrook to perform in the playoffs, I give them a good chance to reach the big dance.
Curis is in a similar situation as Westbrook only he has a player behind him who was a higher draft pick and one who has as much or more athletic ability. Jeremy Maclin is destined for that split end position and he might take over the starting role before the season is over.
Curtis is still a better receiver right now if he’s healthy but he can’t seem to stay healthy. These are more than injury problems.
Reid said that “wear and tear” is the reason Curtis is having so many injury problems.
“Wear and tear” means a player is getting older and his body is starting to tell us that it can’t take any more of the pounding which is part of the NFL. That means your career is coming to an end.
Curtis won’t be a Philadelphia Eagle next year. If he can stay healtlhy and be productive, he might be able to sign with another team next year.
The clock on the wall moves very fast in the NFL.
