An Analysis Of The Wide Receivers Currently On The Eagles Roster

One of the bright spots for the Eagles going into 2012 is the wide receiving core. DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are both coming off down years in 2011, but still even after a down year this duo isn’t nearly as bad as the starting duos for other teams around the league.

I expect both receivers to come into 2012 healthy and with a fresh mindset. The performance of the wide receivers in 2012 will depend on whether or not the front office decides to bring back DeSean Jackson.

Still no word has surfaced about what the Eagles plan to do with DeSean. They may still be working on their plan or waiting to see what options they have in free agency and the draft. A report on NFL.com from less than a week ago stated DeSean has a much different view of his value than what the Eagles believe it to be.

Jackson dealt with being severely underpaid all through the 2011 season and through it all still finished just shy of a thousand yards receiving coming in with 961 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2011. Maclin who missed a chunk of time due to a shoulder injury finished with 859 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2011.

If you look at the overall body of work for this duo though it’s clear they work well together and complement each other on the field. I wouldn’t change much about the wide receiving core going into 2012. In my opinion this is the one part of the team that needs nothing more than a tweak if you bring back DeSean.

You have speed and a deep threat with number 10. Maclin and Jason Avant both can go over the middle and Riley Cooper came into his own in 2011 as another receiver that can catch the ball anyplace on the field. Steve Smith should be gone in 2012 and if anything he should be replaced via free agency or a late round draft pick.

I’ve backed DeSean all season and will continue to do so. Speed kills in this league and with a new deal DeSean will have the right mindset coming into 2012. I believe if the Eagles let him walk he’ll make them pay but the bottom line is if he does end up elsewhere it’s nice to know other options do exist in free agency for the Eagles to fall back on to replace the yards they’d lose.

I disagree with article,
I believe this WR Corps is become very average and when I look aroung the NFL, they rank somewhere in the middle in my opinion.. (I think the Giants,Saints,Packers,Falcons,Cowboys in the NFC Alone had better, deeper WR corps)

I look at D-Jax/Maclin as #2 WR’s and the remainder of the Corps as #4/#5 WR’s in comparison around the NFL.. (Does Avant/Cooper/Hall) present any match-up problems with anyone…

The Eagles will need to updgrade this Position in my opinion

I believe they have decided to move away from DJax…most likely his head injury issues and his slight size have become too much of a risk for the FO to pay out big $…

Celek had a good year, and I believe that as is the trend in the league, he and Vick will continue to develop into a strong combination. However, we will need a stronger WR corp to open up the field for the TE and swing passes and screens to Shadey.

Obviously Vincent Jackson would give us the size we have needed in the red-zone (sorry, Riley Cooper has not been a weapon in the redzone), and is a proven veteran under 30 years old….with the status of Reids contract I believe that they cannot aford to look too long into the future, they will need to win next year at all costs.

CHEAP FRONT OFFICE. HERE WE GO AGAIN, CLOSE TO GETTING TO THE TOP, BUT A CHEAP FRONT OFFICE. JERRY JONES AND THE ROONEYS WOULD OF TAKEN CARE OF DESEAN BY MID SEASON. 2004 SB -T.O. SAGA AGAIN. CHEAP NICKEL AND DIME FRONT OFFICE. THIS IS OUR TEAM’S BIGGEST ACHILLES HEEL. SAME OL’ SAGA. KEEP ON DRINKING THE GREEN STUFF. OF COURSE DESEAN HAD A DOWN YEAR WITH ALL THE MONEY BEING THROWN AROUND AND HE GETS NONE. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!! GO ON A JOB AND OUT PERFORM CO-WORKERS ONLY TO SEE THEM GET REWARDED AND YOU DON’T. YA’LL JUST KEEP ON DRINKING THE GREEN CONCOCTION THAT HAS KEPT US IN THE HOLE EVER SINCE LURIE BOUGHT THIS TEAM. “CHEERS TO YOU”!

If the Eagles have any sense which we all know they dont they would move anyone or anything they can to receive the services of Justin Blackmon.

When you look at the market this year it not that deep at wide receiver V Jax who will resign with the Chargers and Dwayne Bowe who im not quite sure if he would fit into the Eagles offense.

There are and array of talented Linebackers the Eagles could target like Aldon Smith and Stephen Tullock. Eagles win games from the deep ball and that was non existed last year.

Rocko, please explain where said front office is being cheap. Desean is asking for Fitzgerald money. Would you give that to him? I wouldnt. Hes a 1 trick pony who disappears in big games and when jammed off the line. I love the guy but he might be worth Santonio money at best.

That’s just Rocko, who, along with others here just spout the familiar party derisions that circulate amogst the ill-informd.

“They’re cheap” (when in fact they’ve consistently been in the top 5 in payroll since Lurie took over) just means, “They’re not signing my favourite players”

@ Rocko….that old, “the FO is cheap” really hasn’t been true for a number of years. They were very active in Free Agency last year..they signed their QB to a big deal….they still need to lock up Shadey. It looks like they have decided that DJax is too much of a risk, physically I would presume. Otherwise, while some of the moves don’t always work out, the team has spent money.

Wild_bk – who said that Desean demanded Fitz money? I never heard desean say that. But I do believe he’s prolly worth what their initial offer is. That’s why he has an agent and they bargain. These NFL reports are just speculative stories to spin in the owners favor because they aren’t in the union. Their on the other side, and the NFL network is on the owners side. Watch our offense plummet if Desean isn’t in the line.up

I meant to say: “He’s prolly worth more than what their initial offer is”, it’s called negotiating. They’re (the owners) are on the NFL network’s side.

DJax may have changed his $$ demands, but through most of last year I believe they were reporting that he was looking for Santonio Holmes type $$…but who really knows how accurate “those reports” really are..the agents do alot of spinning of the media to get the most money for their clients.

I agree with you Rocko…if the birds do not make a move to replace DJax, it will have a negative effect on the offenses performace. He opens things up for others even when he isn’t getting alot of balls. Without his speed, look for the other recievers to have trouble getting open (can any remember the Thrash and Pinkston days?). We need to have a quality replacement if they intend on letting him walk.

so much to clear up… so much. Vinnie- Dead on. its tough to watch our fav’s walk out the door but sometimes they are not worth the price to keep them. also- clearly players that have left have done little elsewhere. I actually kinda hate this fact because it says alot about big red (and i dont like such facts). but…… at the heart of the issue… if you dig deeper at ROCKO’s statments you see a bit of truth among the clutter. and the truth is this….. our beloved eagles fail time and time again to ajust to losing such players. Examples… long before we had a T.O or Djax, we had NOTHING at the wr position. and finally… andy had seen the light and landed T.O. but after he left… we had nothing for a while. after dawk left… we had nothing. after trot left we had nothing. after sheldon left we actually somehow replaced him with something worse than nothing. nothing would have better than what we had. after JJ left we replaced him with nothing than again…. something worse than nothing. so…. i also share this fear if Djax leaves. will we again be left with a pass happy andy withb james thrash at the wr position again? you know he wont stop throwing regardless.

I’m with Rocko on this one. DeSean Jackson, should have been paid before, V. Young, and Jason (overrated) Babin. I think he could have shown a little more maturity, but I understand how he feels….Pay Him!!! I also agree with Paulmans suggestion to continue to upgrade.the WR position. This can be done in the draft without breaking the bank in the first round possibly in the 3rd – 4th rounds with a Brian Quick, Joe Adams (mainly for kickoffs) and or Jordan White. GMCliff will be revealing his draft the way he would have it come out Wednesday. I draft stars, and impact…look for it……but good stuff today fellas……

as far as the kind of money Djax wants we only know what he said on the T.O. show. he clearly stated that he was gunna get paid and that he was going to represent the wr’s. i dont know what he wants but that does not sound humble to me.

to me- the need to sign Mathis RIGHT NOW. get that done so we can use the tag on DJAX if needed. they need to secure leveradge. then….. see about draft day trades…. see about drafting a WRand all of that. but we cannot just let him walk. i dont see him ever leading the league in TD’s or catches but if he fell into the right hands he would do serious pain work on teams. i can see Djax landing with the pats as their starting MLB/wr. he wou’ld catch 8 TD’s and lead the league in tackles.. really not that crazy when we are talking about the pats.

yes green AND… i would not mind 1 bit if they bring in 1 more starting player for this Oline. we still have 2 young players, 2 studs and a guy coming off a good season. im not sure i would call this line stable. how many times have we seen 1 big guy go down in the preseason with back problems or something?

DCar – though I see where you’re coming from, if they gave an once about winning and taking care of their playmaking threat, they would came up off of the money and taken good care of DJax; thereby ‘m still calling em cheap. if they got so much money to spread around, why not take care of DJax?

Stevo – yes i agree that the least they could do was place a tag on him and show some appreciation for his services and keep the continuity going with this offense next season. Also, i was a little confused about Djax playing the MLB/ wr position for the Pats, but knowing belicheck, anythings possible! The fact that you can see through the clutter lets me know you’re coming along fine buddy.

@ Rock….I agreed with that last season also, why not pay DJax…it obviously affected his mindset during the season…the guy is human, and he looks in the lockerroom and see Steve Smith sitting over there on payday…it is not right.

But I can also see where the team might see this small receiver with 2 head injuries as a risk that they don’t want to take…to them it is a business, so thanks for your service, we are going in another direction. It is cold, but it looks like this is the move they are going to make.

It does look like a cold move that they might make greenfan; as much as i want to see#10 rewarded, it looks colder and colder day by day for Djax. it could possibly make us colder as a team , while the rest of the east passes us by – The Giants already have within 5 years and 2 Superbowls.

3) OLB- i-like you- want 2 here but 1 may have to do.
4) FS- bring the pain, bring the funk- bring the noise- bring the WOOD!!
5) #2 qb. Vick gets hurt. also… vick was not good. He is our starter BUT… we need something better than Young. ill admit…. i waas wrong… though young would be good.
6) If Djax walks out the door, we need a WR prolly more than ALMOST anything on my list. Djax spreads the field… this HAS to continue.
7) Backup RB- id go draft here.
8) RG/RT/LG- whever Herm is not playing..lol. we need 1 more on this line.
9)CB- im assuming Asam is gone. I honestly think we will be better after DRC moves outside. i really want to know what we have after Hanson. If its crap…. they HAVE to draft here.

as far as Jackson being a MLB- i was kidding.

I agree with fact that the Eagles are cheap when it comes to negotiating with key players. The two most inconsistent positions for the Eagles in recent history have been MLB and WR. You can not win a SB without having some semblance of stability at these positions. Jerimiah Trotter and T.O. were arguable the best players the Eagles have had at these positions both have had very public nasty disputes over their worth and both of them had a right to be angry. Both wound up leaving the team and were damaged for the way they handled the situation and the Eagles have suffered because of the departure of both of these players. Trotter comes back and the defense is immediately better… he should have never been gone to begin with. But none of this was Reid’s fault. He doesn’t decide who to pay and who not to pay. Ultimately that lies with the FO. Djax had a right to be angry when Philly brought in all these free agents and gave them big contracts even though they had yet to play a single down. I would have been pissed too! He’s not a #1 WR but he’s definitely a game breaker worth more than $600k. When it comes to the Eagles front office they have sometimes made it hard for Andy to manage his team because of a lack of willingness to negotiate. So yes this FO is lacking in negotiation acumen and if they don’t learn how to keep key players happy and stop playing these “who’s gonna blink first” games I expect the chemistry of this team to be blown up again.

Having said all of that I think the team should definitely target Vincent Jackson. He’s big, fast, and experienced and can give you plenty of YAC as well as a big target for the red zone. Vincent Jackson gives you a big receiver that can take hits over the middle leaving the outside to Maclin and DJax…. if the team gets Vincent Jackson or a player like him, in my opinion the offense is primed to go deep into the playoffs.

V-Jax is from Colrado, has played on the West Coast his entire COllege and Pro Career and has had a few run-ins with the law off the field, with the media nad also front office personnel while with the Chargers. It’s very unlikely he comes to the East Coast to play for anyone.. I see him moving the 49ers,Arizona or possibly even back hom for the Denver Broncos..

Thanks Rocko, I just want to see this team win and bring home the Lombardi trophy. I don’t think this team is that far away from the promised land. I think next season will make people forget about this season (especially if we do well in the draft). I think that oddly enough, having a disappointing season which leads to us having the #15 pick gives the team a chance to get what we need defensively in a rich draft class. And I think that what we need at WR can be filled through free agency. Just a few pieces and this team goes deep into the playoffs in my opinion.

Liionsden…and here we are with this “Desean was “disrespected” BS again. How many times do I have to print the salaries of other NFL stars who are better than Desean and get paid less before you start accecpting that this happens on every single NFL team, every single year. Every single player watches Free agents or draft picks come in and sign bigger contracts than what they have. This is commonplace.

What is not commonplace is how Desean acted like a little whiny bitch about the whole thing. Pouting during interviews, acting immaturely towards his responsibilities, and allowing his play to sufffer dramatically – whether it be ranking 1st in fair catches, at the bottom of the league in actual returns, leading in drops, or ranking lower than 50th in the league in most WR categories.

Lions, you wrote:
He’s not a #1 WR but he’s definitely a game breaker worth more than $600k. ..

Was Matt Forte worth more than $550k? Was he “disrespected” when the Bears signed Marion Barber to a $4.6 million deal while he was the starter?

Is Ray Rice worth more than $550k? He must have felt very “disrespected” when they signed Ricky WIlliams to a 2.6 million dollar deal when he was only nmaking $550k.

Is Arian Foster worth more than $550k? Was he “disrespected” when they signed the awesome Lauwrence Vickers to a 2 year $3 million dollar deal when he was only making $550k?

Want Wrs?

How about the entire Pitt steelers….Wallace 500K for 72 catches 1200 , or Antonio Brown $500K for same, or Sanders at 400K….I wonder is they were “disrespected” watching the incomperable Arnaz battle on special teams at double their salaries?

I could do this for days.

Playes coming in and getting a better contract than the next guy is commonplace and happens on every NFL team. Every year. Desean acted like a bitch.

Oh…by the way….how did Wes Welker (making $2 million) react when the Pats handed Chad Ocho a $4.75 million signing bonus on top of his $1 mil salary? Funny, I didn’t hear him whining how a guy with 15 catches is making 2.5x as much as he does…..

The “disrestected” arguement and the “Eagles’ handled the situation incorrectly” line is complete bullshit…

But…what else from could I expect form a guy who thinks Terell Owens “…….had a right to be angry” What a joke that is.

@paulman I understand your argument but at this stage in his career I think VJax wants to win and realizes that the window is closed in SD. Also, a change of circumstance and surrounding could be what he needs as well as knowing he could be the difference maker on a team that is very close to a SB. Nnamdi, DRC, and Jenkins all came over from either the midwest or west coast and are just fine… I think a change in surrounding with a new team might be what reinvigorates his career. That’s just my opinion.

Vinnie… you are MUST SEE MUTHAFUCKIN’ TV!!!! Some of the shit you write is so far disconnected from the reality of the game that I don’t know what to say.

First of all, until you go out on the field and expose yourself to concussions and the potential for paralysis or any life altering injury you do not have the right to call any professional football player a “whinny bitch”. So get back on the couch and calm down. Secondly, DJax is a significant player on this offense because his speed alone combined with Vick’s arm strength forces Defenses to have to play 2 deep safeties at all times allowing for huge opportunities underneath. A team that can’t get a significant pass rush on the Eagles cannot beat them. You want to call a player who has been to 2 pro bowls at two different position his first years in the league a “whinny bitch”… are you searious… have the other people you mentioned done this? the dude has had two 900+ receiving yrd seasons and 2 1,000yds receiving season in his first 4yrs and averages roughly 300yds in return yds over that same period. “Whinny Bitch”… seriously??? I could care less what other players are payed around the league… it is the importance of a player to his team that determines his salary and if a player is brought in at a high salary based on his past performance and doesn’t fit in he will definitely be cut or traded. I have no doubt that Ocho will be shopped around next season if he can’t get it mid way through. And let’s understand something… Forte was criticized by many players for caving and being a “good little soldier” and subsequently he got injured and might not get his due. Part of the reason he got injured is because he was the workhorse of that team more valuable than even J. Cutler. He should have held out because what the Bears did to him was complete and utter Bullshit.

The Eagles have had a history of bad negotiation with key players and this is well know fact… Everyone wants to complain about Linebackers and WR’s but when we get good ones they don’t want to pay them. Trotter leaves the defense goes down… Trotter comes back the defense goes up. Donovan has problems getting the ball to receivers and getting out of the NFC championship game… F.O. Get’s T.O. and Donovan has a career year in Completion percentage, TDs, and Finally gets to the SB. T.O. rehabs himself back from a broken ankle has 9 catches for 122yds in the SB and you don’t want to pay him. I will not apologize for TO because he was wrong in his conduct, but they should have paid him because he earned it and TO was a bonefide #1. DJax is not a bonefide #1 but he is of great significance to this team… if he doesn’t come off of that “I want #1 receiver money” shit then I will say he is definitely not being realistic. But he’s not a “whinny bitch” he has earned a pay raise.

VinnietheEv… I know you can do this for day’s because in your head you actually know what you are talking about… so who are we going to get now that they fired Juan like you predicted they would…. what’s that???? they didn’t… but how could that be after all YOU said they would…. Just a day in your life on Planet I Hate Mike Vick…

You’ve seriously got to go get this dislexia problem of your checked out.
Again, I write on thing and you read another. I stated clearly at the end of the season that Castillo would remain the DC. I was a staunch supporter whilst everyone on here was orgasming over the possibility of Steve Spagnolo.

But of course I write one thing, you read another. Like I said, you should get that checked out. I wouldn’t like to see you at a 4 way stop. Though you must be a blast on a road trip trying to read a map. North is south, right is left. When you go to a restaurant and order a steak, do you then start yelling at the waiter when they bring you a steak? “But I read Salmon!!!”

“First of all, until you go out on the field and expose yourself to concussions and the potential for paralysis or any life altering injury you do not have the right to call any professional football player a “whinny bitch”.” Interesting. I didn’t realize you had access to my medical history. I better go talk to my doctor about that patient privacy business. Wrong guess again bucko.

“A team that can’t get a significant pass rush on the Eagles cannot beat them.” Cannot. Cannot. Totally unbeatable. Man, every time I read your drivel I think to myself, “ok that’s his most ridiculous statement…,” but then you always go and outdo yourself. Atlanta game. 0 sacks. Loss. 1st NYG when NYG missing 2 DL) game 2 sacks. Loss. Buffalo game 0 sacks. Loss. Arizona game 2 sacks. Loss. I could go on I’m sure, but this game is too easy. After you just make this shit up, do you then honestly believe your own delusions?

“…have the other people you mentioned done this?” Again, you read the list right? Each player (save sanders) better, and more important for their team than Desean.

I am however getting a feel for what kind of fan you are. Owens, Desean, Vick….these are the guys you’re constantly drooling over. Punks one and all. But I suppose you have a special place in your heart for guys who say they wish they wished they’d signed with other teams.

And a guy like Forte who plays through his contract? You have no room for a guy like him do you? He’s a “good little soldier” and “should have held out.” (garbage) You can’t respect a guy like him because I guess he isn’t ‘thug life’ enough for you. He should have a little more Diva in him.

You love the fist pounding, hogging the camera, diving backwards into the endzone, grabbing the sharpie, “I’m bigger than the game!!” punks. Unfortunately, and one day you’ll learn this, those guys never win championships.

Vinnie… Mr Pocket Protector… I am almost certain you never played a down of football and if you did you were not any good at all and that explains why you have so much anger towards this team because it was probably your dream to play for them and that didn’t workout so well.

But let me show you why I know you don’t know shit about football:

“A team that can’t get a significant pass rush on the Eagles cannot beat them.” Cannot. Cannot. Totally unbeatable. Man, every time I read your drivel I think to myself, “ok that’s his most ridiculous statement…,” but then you always go and outdo yourself. Atlanta game. 0 sacks. Loss. 1st NYG when NYG missing 2 DL) game 2 sacks. Loss. Buffalo game 0 sacks. Loss. Arizona game 2 sacks. Loss. I could go on I’m sure, but this game is too easy. After you just make this shit up, do you then honestly believe your own delusions?” Why are you listing sacks??? Is there something out there that says a significant pass rush always equal sacks??? A significant pass rush leads to turnovers because the QB is hurried and his timing is disrupted but it doesn’t always lead to sacks. In that Atlanta game you mention… Vick was hit from behind while trying to hand of the ball to McCoy and fumbled (significant pass rush), Vick play fakes turns and a defensive lineman is in his face immediately and he throws his lone interception, that wasn’t really an interception, (significant pass rush), Vick is put out the game because of a late hit by falcons d-line man that resulted in a concussion (significant pass rush). In that NYG Game Vick suffered 2 late hits the last of which put him out of the game because his hand was thought to be broken (significant pass rush), Buffalo Game 4 int’s 2 tipped passes while defenders are coming at Vick, one when Vick was hit from behind (significant pass rush) and one when Maclin didn’t run the proper route and Avant didn’t fight for the ball. There was also one called back because Vick threw an Int due to a defender being in his face (significant pass rush) but the ball was ruled down because it hit the ground. Arizona game second play of the game defender comes unblocked and cracks three of vicks ribs and he is not the same the rest of the game (significant pass rush) Vinnie for the last time STOP TALKING TO ME ABOUT SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. I have watched and analyzed all of these games time and again and I know for certain you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Vinnie… if you go to work and you help that company make money and increase their bottom line (with you’re intellect I can’t imagine some one would actually pay you but try and follow me on this one) you expect to be compensated for your work. If you make that team significantly better you expect a raise. The NFL is a business my friend. It has been said that playing in the NFL shortens your life expectancy. If you want be undercut in your worth and risk your health for far below your value then go ahead… Be a drone. Matt Forte got hosed! I feel really sorry for him because he deserved better than that and now he may never get paid.

But now I know what kind of players you like… Now I know what kind of person you truly are and the content of your character. You don’t like people who stand up for themselves and speak out about injustice. You don’t belong in modern day society Vinnie you belong in a time long past. You don’t deserve any of my time nor any of my respect because you can’t get past who Vick, DJax, and Owens are on the surface. I am willing to bet that Vick does more in the community then you’ve ever done, I watch DJax take a little boy under his wing after finding out that the little boy was bullied. DJax now mentors that same boy and has changed his life. And while Owens has not always conducted himself the right way he is surely no ones punk. What you said was shameful and disgraceful… IF ANYONE ON THIS SITE IS A PUNK IT IS VINNIETHEEVICTOR! I’ve been watching you drop racial epitaphs over and over again and just haven’t responded to it. But I am certain it will catch up with you soon…

Lion, you make some good points, but Owens sure is being punked by his 4 baby Mommas, ain’t he? Vick is doing community service & charity because he has too, to save restore his broken image. I agree that DJax did a cool thing with the bullied kid & should have gotten something $$$ wise, but it is plain to see. The Birds don’t want him & surely aren’t going to give him top 5 receiver $$$. It’s just that simple. Read between the lines, it ain’t rocket science. If they truly wanted him, it would have been a done deal a long time ago!

Had to comment after reading the lion and vinnie. I’m not really into all the accusations and name calling but the topic is worth commenting upon. Vinnie you brought up some decent cases but many of them don’t have merit. First off you can’t compare RB $ and WR $ they just aren’t valued the same in today’s NFL. Also a lot of the ppl u mentioned have yet to prove themselves beyond one good season (coming into this year) such as foster, brown, and sanders. As far as the welker referral, he is good true but clearly a product of scheme and QB play (Julian Edelman was doing a decent job pf filling his role for a bit when he was out) where as chad was supposed to bring a dynamic to the team they lost with moss being gone Desean has been the eagles #1 receiving talent since literally day one. In addition to his actual production you have to account for everything else he does for “this” offense. When Desean steps onto the field safeties line up at least 10-15 yds deeper than when he is not. This not only opens up underneath routes but also assists both McCoy and Vick in gaining rushing yds since they don’t have to worry about safeties creeping up in the box. His presence in the eagles offense makes the entire unit better. So yes he was grossly underpaid and I can’t fault him for being disgruntled. If you don’t agree just look at what happened to osi of the giants. After his monster season he wanted to renegotiate his contract but was told be a good little worker bee and the rewards will come however he got hurt the following season and now doesn’t have the work to demand the money he was told he’d get and by the time his contract expires he won’t be near as explosive and therefore has forever missed out on his “big money” shot. I agree with you vinnie on some points that it is a business and it isn’t always fair. However players have a very small window of being at their peak and it can be easily shut due to injury. Who are we to criticize them for trying to capitalize.
