Howie Roseman: “I think the future is bright for DeSean Jackson”

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman is heading for Indianapolis for next week’s NFL Combine and he’s sure to run spend some time with DeSean Jackson’s agent Drew Rosenhaus.  As you would expect, he had nothing but good things to say about DeSean Jackson, but he refused to say exactly what the Birds were going to do with the speedy wide receiver.

He did emphasize the fact that he believes you build a good football team by draft good players and keeping them under contract.

“You want to always keep your really good players under contract. That’s the way it’s always been,” Roseman said. “It’s been draft and lets extend them and re-sign them. It just doesn’t always happen that’s how it works.”

I think the Birds will try to sign Jackson, but if they can’t, they’ll franchise him.

“We feel fortunate to have a player of DeSean Jackson’s magnitude on our football team and I think the future is bright for DeSean Jackson,” Roseman said.

Thats obvious. Pay the Guy. He does just as much fort the offense even when he is not targeted. Opens everything up. He could have 50 catches and some people who do not know football would say he is not top 10. But in reality most of what the Eagles get is because the safetys play 20-25 yds deep.

Yea stillmatic….the success of the Eagles is because of Desean Jackson……how did we EVER move the ball before he became an Eagle? I just don’t know. How is ANY team able to move the ball up and down the field when they don’t even have Desean Jackson? It’s amazing.

Yeah his future is bright. He can’t lose now.

-Come in 2012 have a great year and either the Eagles pay him or someone else does. Either way, this kid is getting his money.

I will keep repeating what I have already stated, if D-Jax opens things up for everyone else on Offense, then why hasn’t the team won anything yet in his 4 years playing for the Eagles… 2-3 in the Playoffs overall and losers of 3 Playoff games in the Row.. You would think with all the love and hype for D-Jax that I awlways read about would amount to multiple Championships by now… ain’t happening boys.. he’s a talented player but not a Winner in my book..

We havent won the past 3-4 yrs because according to 90% of people on this site and In the city say the its reids fault! I just state the facts and in the games Desean didnt play the offense looked like a joke. Oh another reason why the Eagles havnt wone last 3-4 yrs. D is soft and never recovered from losing B-Dawk And JJ I dont think Desean is the problem. As I see it he pretty much got us into the Superbowl his rookie year agaisnt the Cardinals after catching a 65 yd TD in 4th Qtr only to have the D let Warner move the ball 80 yds in 2 min for a td. So there are facts!

I say what people are scared to say…….. He it goes another fact that needs to be recorded……..Trade Macklin this ofseason andAsante and get what you can. Get rid of Macklin before he is truly recognized for what he really is. He is nothing without Desean, He never has any game breaking big plays. He drops balls, Fumbles and has a ton of penalties, always hurt, scared to take a hit. get rid of him to any team willing to take him. Put money in Desean since he proves he can make big plays and strikes fear in any DB. Once again this is so obvious how important Desean is and how awful Macklin is.

gmcliff…Thanks for responding to my Fat Al post. I’m a little disappointed with you if you are a big DeSean guy. You can get a much better WR (like Kendall Wright) at #15 than DeSean Jackson. Maybe not as good this year but better than D Jack ever was by next year. Plus you make Maclin put up or shut up. If you recall he was supposed to be the number one and not D Jack. He has been an enigma. We signed Steve Smith because we were afraid he wouldn’t play last year. Now we don’t know what to do with Jackson because Maclin has not given us enough confidence after three years. Jeremy, the time is yours!! Lets see what you got? Speak now or forever hold your peace.

Stillmatic….I got your number Brotha. You are typical. DeSean is a one trick pony and Maclin is a much better player. Lets put them both on the Patriots and see what they did with a real QB. Maclin would be a star and D Jack would still catch fifty passes and drop twenty for a thousand yards and five TDs.

IMO unless you are replacing D Jax with Vincent Jackson or D Bowe then it’s pointless. Whether you like D Jax or not this is what the franchise tag is for. We control his destiny. I would rather have him for one year to prove his worth. I do not want an unproven draft pick. This front office does not have time to rebuild. Like it or not the team has to win now!

D-Jax/Maclin are the 3rd best WR Combo in the their own Division, behind the Giants and Cowboys.
D-Jax/Maclin are probably in the bottom half in the NFC behind the Packers,Saints,Falcons,Lions,GIants,Cowboys, Seahawks with a healthy Rice,
Cardinals..

Stop Paul. You and I both know that you cant blame it all on 1 thing. Bottom line for Djax is that he DOES open things up. Is it worth the bank? No. But can they do the same thing with a new Rook? no.

Tag him. Look for an upgrade. If it all shakes down perfectly.. we get a better player for Cheaper. Otherwise. Let it be for this year and sell the farm in 2013 if it doesnt.

Eagles 0….thats why I think you are taking a huge chance to do this. We are not talking about someone you drafted with the fifth pick in the draft. We are talking about the 49th pick. 49th! And you got four years out of the guy and he is never ever ever going to be a number one WR. He doesn’t have the build, the work ethic or the attitude. Why risk paying him all of the money we have under the cap because we are stubbornly insisting on “GETTING SOMETHING FOR HIM??????” Who fucking cares! Its the 49th pick! Who cares if you get nothing for him?!?!? GET the fuck over it!! The guy you drafted at 19 hasn’t panned out yet either. Fill other holes and draft a WR at #15!! It is shear stubborness again on the part of this organization to insist they always have to get something for nothing! Jesus!

Jbird. If you tag him the player can either…..

1) Sign it at anytime- the moment he sighns it he and the team are locked up.
2) Leave it alone- Any time a team wants to pull the Tag back they can.
3) Sighn with a new team- if that happens, the former team is given like 4,000 draft picks.
4) the player can retire.

JBird…….LOL Put Macklin and Desean on the Patriots and Macklin would be a star????? What have you been watching the last few years? Macklin is not @ Mizzouri Playing in the Big 12 where Defense is non existant. Once again he lacks big plays and is always hurt and drops alot of passes………Desean had one bad year last year where he was not in it mentally. Desean would put up huge numbers with Brady. Vick misses Desean all the time and the other times he doesnt even look his way and the camera shows that Desean was 10 yds behind the Defesne. Here is another fact that I told people 2 yrs ago when they were all in with Vick.

HE CAN NOT READ A DEFENSE, HOT ROUTE OR BEAT A BLITZ. VICK HAS ALL THE TALENT IN THE WORLD FROM THE SHOULDERS DOWN.

So yes Desean would blow up with Brady.

Jbird- the number 1 WR tag is crap. What matters is the QB progression. Whos the #1 option on that play? Also…. what are the other players doing to help open up option #1. Djax is a HUGE part of nearly every play. Just watch the games that he’s not out there. His speed is respected and he can kill you from any point on the field.

Maclin is a better receiver than Desean. Anyone that believes otherwise is a damn fool and media whore. (which means you love the brash, attention seeking, diva type of receiver instead of the guy that never celebrates and does his job).

Is Desean a hell of a threat? Damn right. I love him. But he has some major flaws that I don’t like.

The future IS bright for Desean….just not with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Don’t pitchers and catchers start this week?? We should hear something to try to steal the headlines away from the Phillies. What do they have. It is way too quiet three weeks before FA. Where is the Mathis signing? Where is the Landri signing? Where are the talks with Jackson going. He is not going to budge from eight mil so franchsing him is a mistake. No one is giving him eight. So how do you trade him after you tag him if he won’t take less? You can’t and then you are stuck with someone who is now malcontent that you wanted to trade him and held him hostage. Just let it go and don’t risk our whole off-season plan by mishandling this situation AGAIN! Where is Shady’s money that he totally deserves if you pay $9.5M for this punk??

I would not mind going into the season with Maclin, Cooper, Avant and signing Robert Meachem to a deal. I still believe we would be an above average WR corps.

Hell, we use to do it with James Thrash and Todd Pinkston!

I don’t want to direct too much attention to the WR corps anyway, we have Shady McCoy. One of the best in the business. Give him the ball!

If we franchise him and can’t work a trade then our whole off-season is spent on one player. Are trade talks prohibited now as well?? What is the rule on that? I think you can’t do anything before 3/13. Is that right?

jbird

February 17, 2012 1:58 pm

Birdo…I agree. The first thing I would do is try to trade Assante Samuel when I can. Then I would re-sign Mathis, Landri and tender Dixon at a third round tender. I would not cut Jenkins and I would not answer the phone when Laws agent called. I would see if Fat Al would sign here with no guarantees. I would not franchise Jackson. I would cut JJ and Justice. In FA, I would sign Manny Lawson, Burress and Fat Al. Then I would draft Kendall Wright at #15 and then a MLB to compete with Chaney for the MLB job with my very next pick. And I would trade up a few spots in the second to get the guy I really wanted by parting with one of the fourth round picks or the third if necessary. Thats my simple plan. If Fat Al worked out to be at least productive and quiet, I would be a God Damn genius. Starting line up on opening day:

Vick, Peters, Mathis, Kelce, Watkins, Herremans, Celek, Shady, Burress, Maclin, Kendall Wright.

Cole, Jenkins, Fat Al, Babin, Lawson, (Chaney/Rookie), Rolle, Nnamdi, DRC, Allen, (Jarrett/Coleman)

Henery, Some other punter, (Gilyard/rookie)

Stevo….regarding the defense. I see it like this. They are good enough to win the SB if…..Bowles gets Nnamdi, DRC and Allen to play their A game. And any two of DT, MLB, SAM and SS gets a significent upgade. Not all of these but just two. What do you think?

Stevo

February 17, 2012 2:42 pm

jbird
jbird
February 17, 2012 2:43 pm

Stevo…..This is just a hunch but I don’t think Assante cares much for Nnamdi and makes him feel like an outsider and kind of gets others (like DRC) to treat him similarly. I think getting rid of Assante is essential for maximizing Nnamdi’s game. This is purely a hunch based on what little I can see of the types of people Assante and Nnamdi seem to be.

jbird
jbird
February 17, 2012 2:47 pm

Stevo….I never saw it as that cut and dried. They needed more than a RCB. They needed two OLBs and a SS as well. And that was still putting way too much stock in Dixon and Chaney based on a few games. The big problem with the FO’s whole plan last year was putting too much faith in players like Vick, Chaney, Allen, and Dixon. A few games does not a player make.

jbird
jbird
February 17, 2012 2:53 pm

Stevo…..If the Eagles do not end the off-season with any of these players, I will be disappointed. Tyvon Branch, Michael Griffin, Mark Barron, Tulloch, Hawthorne, Lofton, or Lawson. I expect one of those guys to be on this team next year or I don’t really see how they improved the defense. God forbid they did soemthing ballsy like sign Mario Williams and trade Trent Cole on the last year of his contract.

See now this is the Fans I know. Hey we go years with no WR core so now we get a core that can lead the league in offense and hold on…..we bitch and want them gone.

We want a prime QB enter McNabb piff boom pow we bitch and want him out of here not when he was in decline mind you but a mere few years after he came here and lost an NFC Champ game.

Riiiiight you want a superbowl, but hell at the time you had not even been to the Conf’s in like a billion years and wow the team let you poor eagles fan down.

I got some of you figured out, hate what you have…want what you don’t have….If the Eagles win the Bowl it will because the conference was weak, the other teams stars all got hurt, it was in spite of the coaches, and Lurie won it but didn’t really want to win it.

Don’t get me wrong many of your points are valid and spot on, but I sometimes get “BITCHING FATIGUE” whenever I take a chance and read the posts, shame on me I am so cursed weak arrrrrrrrrr!!

Stay strong and true brothers, I still got hearts for you all, (You to Paul)…Peace.

JBird…pretty interesting what you said, I can see the WR core as you have it being decent.

jbird

February 17, 2012 3:03 pm

Monolith…we do bitch a lot. And I do think Lurie wants to win the SB. And so does Mike Brown. Everyone wants to win but at what cost? Lurie is not willing to pay the price so therefore he doesn’t really want to win. If you treat this too much like a business and not like a sport, you won’t win a title. Money has to come on the way to winning trophies not the other way around. I doubt Jerry Jones would take another billion dollars over a couple more Lombardi’s. He cares more about winning and gloating than making scads of money.
