Eagles Place Franchise Tag On DeSean Jackson

The Eagles just placed the franchise tag on wide receiver DeSean Jackson.  They had until this upcoming Monday to make the decision but they decided to get it done right now.

Philadelphia is the first NFL team to use the franchise tag this year.  Imagine that.

General Manager Howie Roseman says, “We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” said Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

I think it’s a good decision when you consider the emphasis on making the most of the 2012 season.  Maybe they could bring in a receiver who could be better for them in the long run, but Jackson is the best way to go right now.

I see them signing Plaxico Burress to provide some red zone help and I think that’s the way they’ll end up going to battle in the fall.

So what do you think?  Was a good decision or a bad one?

GMCLIFF — idiot. This is NOT a good thing. This just means that they couldn’t work out a long term deal with him.

I expect a trade soon.

I’m very happy about this move, unfortunately, gmcliff I have to disagree with you, I think the hating will intensify. Now the haters will talk about trading him. I would like to see the Eagles draft Streeter from Miami or hill from Georgia tech. Both are 6’4″and ran a sub 4.37 in the 40. That would be a great addition to the receiving corps. Desean will be an Eagle. Sweet music to my ears.

Paulman wrong again… I am 0 for 2012…
One thing for sure, the Eagles got away with not paying him anything near market value the last 2-3 Season, so the man deserves as much as he can get and this is how the system and process works..So Congrats to D-Jax and Hopefully they work out a deal for I don’t think it’s in anyone’s interest to have him a 1 Year Rent-a- Player and go thru all the media questions, scrutnity, etc, etc…

I wouldn’t mind seeing him signed to a deal but I wouldn’t rule out a trade before the draft.

this IS a good thing. 4 things could have happened.

1) Pman plan- let him walk
2) Tag- plays this year for the birds
3) Tag- works out a long term deal before season starts
4) Tag and trade

only 1 was flat out stupid. Bottom line….. eagles will not be without something. Ill take it.

G, It would have been stupid to let him go. They were more to blame for this whole process. Why would anyone give away talent like that. You can talk about everybody elses stats, and how they compare to DeSean’s and it really doesn’t matter. He fits this team. Yes he had drops, and so did a lot of the free agents a lot of people wanted here. I would have been pissed too, if I was knocked out twice, and I was making less than the long-snapper. He’s still human….and will continue to be an Eagle. The only receiver that should be drafted is one that will KR/PR ala Devon Wylie. Lets here all the back pedeling on what the so called experts felt was in the Eagles best interest. They just did what was in their best interest,.

Howie Roseman is a good business man and can talk very well. So him saying he wants desean to be an eagle for the long haul, isnt saying much. Anyone can say that. Like i could say I want paulman to write another article for gcobb.com, is that the truth? No. But if i was to put it out there people could believe it. So with that said, it would be bad for business and for deseans trade value if roseman came out and said yes we franchised desean but were actively trying to trade him. Thats when you would see his value plummet.. So dont believe everything they say.. but with that said they could very well sign desean to a longterm deal and he could be an eagle for life.. its very possible.. it doesnt mean they cant go out and sign another WR or draft one either.. So it was a smart move all around..

lol pman. stuff it.

im fine if he plays this year under this tag. If he gets hurt and loses talent, we can walk away without a problem. I think this is GOOD for the eagels. As far as the media and distractions… this is philly….. ALWAYS be distractions…. T.O. McNabb desean reid….. on and on we go.

Birdo whats with the name calling brother? I don’t think your an idiot, I respect your opinion. I just think your mistaken in your evaluations in reference to DeSean. Besides I can’t be that much of an idiot if I was right. And I will be right again, when they sign him to a longer deal afterwards; He wil not be traded, just because the minority want to see him gone, because of nonsense that could have been avoided by just paying him.

This is whats gonna happen, the Eagles are gonna try to trade D-Jax all the way up until draft day, when their isnt any takers D-Jax is gonna give us what he gave us last year and this years excuse is gonna be cause he doesnt feel wanted, mark it down guys.

Eagls 0 SB – I am pretty mean on here – but comparing anyone to Songs is cruel……

Andrew P – I think you are correct – and I think that ‘may’ be what happens – I think DJAX will sign the tender and be a really good soldier this year – but do not think he put himself at risk if he does play under the tender.

Question for the knowledgable ones – what happens if DJAX refuses to sign the franchise and sits this year?

The Eagles just issued a statement two weeks ago that they would franchise DeSean Jackson. This has been an ongoing debate since seasons end. I have been saying this since day 1. It would be stupid to let him go, trade him or otherwise. I know it pisses you off, but you will get over it. It won’t be the last time your opinions, and realty don’t balance. Don’t be offended brother, just swallow your pride, and move on to your predictions in the draft. All of us will be wrong there, I’m sure. Peace.

A team has to give up a high pick for him now. You guys arent being very league savy thinking that will happen. He doesnt appeal to teams that much. Hes a key elemant to this offense.A bum team might wanna give all that up,but highly doubtful.

He’ll be a Bird in 12′ ….case closed.

Can we get a article about FA’s or how well the Nova care staff is doing in rearanging the weight room?

Rueban Frank was just on DNL and said the Eagles are definetly working on signing DJax to a long term deal. There is no thought of a trade. Only the dumb ass fans want to run him out of town. DJax is more likey to get a deal the Lesean McCoy. Nobody is gonna break the bank on a RB in a passing league. lol

DeSean also said last year he would sign it at the end of the season, how he was “humbled” by his experience last year. The Eagles still could revoke the tag until the point he signs it, so it’s in his best interests to sign quickly.

Plax isn’t a terrible idea… as a fourth receiver, red zone threat. I’d rather we brought a big receiver or another tight end that can stretch the field opposite Celek in through the draft. Wondering if we should package our 2’s, move back up into the first, pick up an LB and big WR day one. The only downside is that it’s a deep draft (Al Toon’s kid is supposed to be a mid 2), so maybe we don’t need to do that.

navyeaglefan
navyeaglefan
March 1, 2012 5:33 pm

The long snapper 1) has less turnovers 2) touched the ball more 3) had fewer drops and 4) gets hit everytime he is out on the field – this is typical GCOBB discrimination against lineman (and I hope all the gibbersih about both sides about getting a LT deal worked out is true – but those of you that love to quote the negatives of Eagle history know that the team typically does not retain players once we get to this point – other then Vick – can anyone name a player they could not work out an extension on that made it to be tagged that was then signed?)

Could you imagine trading DeSean and Asante for a 1st round pick and picking up Kuechly, Fletcher Cox, Kendrick, and a guy like Curry from Marshall? Two good LB’s, a new DT, and an extra DE.

This would be entirely unnecessary if we signed Tulloch though. We could just keep Jackson and get Kuechly….. Burfict in the 4th!

vinnietheevictor

March 1, 2012 5:49 pm

The only reason he might not get traded is because they aren’t getting offers for him. (which says something). I don’t think there’s a big market for showboating mini-man malcontent pussies who contribute 4tds and fair catch 95% of the punts that come their way.

There were 10 WRs at the combine who ran 4.42 or better…..

Who’s going to be willing to give up more than a second (generous) for Desean….no-one.

I still think he’s gone before or at the draft. Package him with a 2nd and move up into first to get Cox. $$

They just tendered Mike Wallace, watch how fast the Patriots scoop him up, they have 2 first rounders so giving up one isnt gonna be a problem, unbelievable how they get all these picks and put there selfs in position to make moves like that or come out on top, i would love just once to see us do that and actually take advantage of it.

So the Birds go to the effort to tag him….then trade him for a teams high pick.1ST or 2nd rounder right? And in your opinion you think a team with a wideout need is gonna be willing to deal for that? Come on Bird. You wann aset the O back by trading this dude? Stop with the juice guzzler stuff and just state your point. You think they trade him. We’re all men with opinions on here….guzzle that juice.

The longsnapper didnt break games opne since he was a rookie and lift the top off coverages.

Having a great player like Mike Wallace is not a dilemma,” Colbert said. “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that Mike Wallace remains a Pittsburgh Steeler and I think that’s Mike’s belief as well. Usually when you have two parties that share the same goal, it’s easier to achieve that goal.”

Man that is good to hear, DJax said he wouldn’t mind being franchised.

I know this has nothing to do with DJax, however I was wondering how do some of you feel about Albert Haynesworth, being brought in at about minimum (or a little more) pay, with stipulations in his contract, no work, no pay. I know last year he wanted to play for Washburn. I personally think he would be a good addition to the defense if they could get a contract and him to work.
