Many times I have to check and see if I’m watching the same Eagles team from week to week.
It’s hard to accept the fact that the same Birds off which went up and down the field on the Giants, was the same group which could only score nine points against the Raiders and only sixteen against the Cowboys.
Birds offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg says that the main reason for the team’s inconsistency is their lack of attention to detail. It’s been the little things which have cost this team.
That missed block by Todd Herremans which cost them a touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin. The penalties, like the one on fourth down to Jason Peters.
With the offensive line it’s not just a matter of them knowing who they have to block, they’ve got to make sure they know which direction they need to block him in order to have a good play.
The receivers need to run better routes as well as being quicker in getting off the line of scrimmage and advancing downfield.
Donovan needs to trust his offensive line to protect him and not get rid of the football too soon.
Fullback Leonard Weaver agreed with him and went on to say that it’s up to each player to take care of their own individual problems.
Weaver also refused to make any excuses for the younger players, like Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy. The veteran fullback said everybody on the team has to hold themselves responsible for doing their job like a professional is supposed to do.
Star wide receiver DeSean Jackson made it clear as well that everybody is going to have step up their game.
I asked DeSean about his teammate Maclin and how it’s really up to him to show teams that they can’t leave him single-covered and get away with it.
He didn’t criticize his younger teammate but he didn’t disagree with my contention that Maclin will have to step and meet the challenge or teams are going to double Jackson and single cover Maclin all season long.
I agree wholeheartedly with what Mornhinweg, Weaver and Jackson had to say.
Players have to focus on doing their jobs and that will take care of the problem.
