ESPN has reported that the Eagles will announce an extension of Andy Reid’s contract sometime this week.
The Eagles responded with the following statement:
We’re aware of the reports regarding Andy Reid’s contract. The organization has acknowledged earlier that it expects to extend his contract at some point in the near future. Beyond that, the organization has no furtheer comment.”
They said all they needed to say because it’s what they didn’t say that speaks the loudest.
They didn’t deny the upcoming extension and announcement.
The extension willl mean Reid will remain the team’s head coach for at least three additional years.
I think Andy has accomplished enough to get a new deal but I want to see them demand that he make some slight changes.
He should be forced to hire a coach that does nothing but help with the clock management and late game decisions. If I were the owner or team president, I would hire a former coach who was strong in these areas to help Reid at the end of games.
I would also demand that he bring in an offensive coach who was a strong proponent of the running game. This would help stop the Eagles from being one-dimensional.
Big Red took over the Birds head coaching position in 1999 and also became the team’s general manager a couple of years later.
The Birds say that Reid should be rewarded for the consistency of his football teams. They have been to five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl.
I think this signing all signals the likely end of Donovan McNabb’s time here in Philadelphia after this season is completed if he doesn’t lead this team to a Super Bowl championship.
I think the Eagles signaled their moves when Joe Banner told Comcast Sportsnet’s Derrick Gunn, that it’s insane to keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.
Clearly the extension of Reid’s contract means the Birds won’t make a change at the head coaching position.
I believe they are going to make the change at quarterback by trading McNabb during the off season and handing the keys of the team’s offense to Kevin Kolb.
Yesterday after the game, McNabb offered support for his head coach when asked about the contract extension. “The guy has done nothing but win,” McNabb said. “Obviously, everyone wants to win the Super Bowl. I do, too. I think we strive for it every year. Sometimes it doesn’t happen. You just have to continue to keep punching. Having a coach like this that continues to prepare his team well and have winning seasons, he deserves it.”
