Joe Banner Couldn’t Help But Reveal Battle With Reid

I’m sure Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was shaking his head when he read about former team President Joe Banner laughing about the deal the Birds signed with speedy wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

Lurie along with Banner, head coach Andy Reid and team COO Don Smolenski had put together a charade a couple of weeks ago to give all of us the impression that Banner wasn’t fired but had merely decided to go elsewhere in pursuit of a more stimulating challenge.

They all did a good that during the news conference except for when Lurie made a couple of mentions about he had to do what was best for the organization.  I was about to swallow some of it until he said that.  Now we all know it wasn’t really what had happened.

Banner let the cat out of bag because he couldn’t help but make his side of the arguments that have been going on in the Nova Care Complex be known publicly.  Lurie’s life long friend communicated his side of the story in an interview with the Boston Globe.

According to Greg Bedard of the Globe, Banner is “having a good laugh” at the Jackson deal.  Here’s what he wrote.

“In his office that is still inside the Eagles’ NovaCare facility, former team president Joe Banner is having a good laugh. Jackson received his $47 million extension, in good measure, because Banner had his contract power usurped. Banner never would have done that deal”.

Clearly the former Eagles President didn’t make this deal and wouldn’t have made this deal with Jackson if he had been in charge of the negotiations.

This is one of the reasons Jackson was quoted on Philly.com last week talking about how “crucial” the 2012 season is to everybody in the organization.  Jackson and his future with the Eagles is on the line and the guy who fought for him and his new contract, Reid have got to deliver with a big year.

Surely Reid has sat down with the key members of his football team like Jackson, quarterback Michael Vick and let them know what the situation is here with the football team.  They must at least have a big year and go deep into the playoffs.

Truth is they want more than that so they can validate the decision by Reid to stand up to Banner and initiate the battle that led to the ouster of the Boston-native from his team President position.

Reid had been the good soldier in the past when Banner had refused to allow him to hang onto a player, who he thought could help the football team. The situation had changed now because Reid’s job is on the line going into the 2012 season.

He was no longer willing to stand aside and let Banner make de facto roster moves by low-balling players Reid wanted to keep but he wanted to get rid of.

The Jackson negotiation was a central point of the team’s post season meetings. Reid was on one side and Banner was on the other.  According to an article in the Los Angeles Times by Sam Farmer, Reid laid it all on the line when he gave Lurie and the Eagles an ultimatum.  Either he gets the power to overrule Banner on roster moves or he’s ready to leave the organization.

Obviously, we can see the Reid was the winner of the battle and Lurie knew during the struggle that it was time to say good-bye to Banner and his methods of running the football team.

I’m with Banner on this one. Was a lot of cake for a #2 wr on the team, and a guy that will no longer be returning punts either – not that he had been doing that with any success the last seasona dn a half.

We’ll see how all these big deals work out.. If players like Vick,D-Jax.McCoy and the other Core veterans who received nice deals don’t win and produce, than this franchise hands will be tied a little with large Salaries given out to such few players

Going to side with Banner. “By their fruits you’ll know them”.

When Jackson did not get what he wanted he decided not to play hard.

The great Jim Rohn said “if you want more, make more of yourself.” “don’t wish less problems wish for more skills” “don’t wish for less challenge wish for more wisdom”

Jackson could have lifted weights and gotten bigger. He could have had a great finale year in his contract and other teams would have been lining up to sign him to a BIG CONTRACT.

Instead he sulked, got allegator arms, dropped td passes, and constantly looked for a soft spot to fall on the ground.

Hope it works out for the Eagles. They have the talent. Just don’t think they have the coaching staff. Like the offensive line and defensive line coaches. Maybe with a year under their belt, some of the defensive coaches will get better at running the wide 9. Maybe last seasons end of year improvements will carry over into this year.

We’ll see.

G,

Maybe you should just let this go. The story is already old and now we just need to focus on the future. Does it really matter if Reid and Banner did have a power play? WTF do I care? It’s done. I just want them to win. Don’t you?

Andy Reid seems to have been given a blank check to make things work this season.

Quinten Mikell a free agent, made the pro bowl with Dawkins back there telling him what to do. With 2 high draft picks at Safety, maybe they should hire a good defensive back coach. Or bring in Dawkins as a consultant.

I don’t believe in Juan, but the defense did seem to get better at the end of the year. But that was the scrub part of the schedual against teams with no quarterback.

Now with Asante “jump the route and don’t tackle” Samuel gone, there should be more disipline in secondary.

George Allen was once given a blank check. They said he exceeded it.

Come on fellas we been following football long enough(or your new to this) to know how these BIg money contracts work. Most players will be lucky to see the big money at the end of those deals. So what they gave him upfront is what he deserves for going to the Pro Bowl in not one but two different posiotions . That year there was a lot to cheer for. Not winning the super bowl or even making it was the bad part.

But i have to sy this about what im starting to hear and read. In my opinion SOME of the power of the fandom in this town must have switched from Blue collar to white collar. There are to many peopel calling up radio stations and posting stuff worring about other peoples money. Blue collar fans understand what its like to physically bust your ass for a living and dont cry as much when shit hits the fan. all these people calling up must not rememember before Andy got here, we didnt have to much to cheer for and started fights with whoever came to the vet just for fun and becasue we knew we would lose. But now with all the tv all these NEW fans jumped on the band wagon and are crying about stupid stuff. Why are some of yoy caring about what desean is doing with HIS HARD EARNED MONEY non of us played not one down or took one big hit for him so let that man do what he wants with his money. I never heard once anyone calling up and talking about Akers when he invested MILLIONS of dollars in a business venture hoping to make money or any other athlete from one of these teams and complain about them investing in there future. and by they way DID DESEAN LOSE ANY MONEY?????…. not that i know of and its nonof my business.. but you are complaining about something that never happened.. so until i hear fair treatment for him the same way you guys let “other” players live and spend ther money please stop with all the girl shit and worry about your own families and your own bank accounts. I tell you i thought this was a MANS SPORT TOWN. its starting to sound like we have more ladies aas fans than men or most of yall need to take some test boosters becasue you cry like bitches.. If you are not one of those people calling up mikey miss and angelo complaining than you should not be offended.. if you are offended im just giving my OPINION….

interesting how Mikell made pro bowls all pro in 10 and Dawkins was only here in 08……… but it was Dawkins that whispered in his ear…

The Jackson contract doesn’t expose the Eagles to much financial risk from what I remember. I do think Jackson is only good on deep routes between the 20’s. With all that said, it should be the football guys having say on keeping players and that man is Andy. If he wants to put the $ in Djax’s pocket, then he can decide where to make it up (typically done with good draft picks). I think there should be a GM to do most all the personal moves, but Andy gets to make the major decisions, he is really and coach/president more than coach/gm. This set up prevent veteran GM’s from coming to Philly if Andy has the ultimate say.

Not a big suprise in what Banner says, but just a confirmation or earlier rumors and Reids own statements at the Banner press conference.

The problems with getting DJax lead to some real problems in Rieds locker room last year….having Steve Smith making many times more than DJax was a recipe for disaster with a “diva” reciever.

While I worry about DJax having had 2 concussions and him being targeted on the field, the cotract as structured is pretty fair to the Birds and pays him a good market average for a player that helps open things up for the other guys with his presence on the field.

There is no doubt that this team understands that the coaches future depends on turning things around for the 8-8 debacle last year. Reid will clearly not have an excuse of Banner promoting a non-productive relationship with the players.

Banner isn’t as bad as many look to make him out to be, but if you hear from many former players, there was a real “us vs. them” mentality forged from tough negotiations. It cannot always be easy, but clearly the Reid and Roseman team look to consider the ultimate player / team relationship when approaching negotiations. No excuses this year Big Red…it is all up to you. GO BIRDS!!!!

Here’s the actual snippet from the original:

“Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson started a rap label and dropped $25,000 at a Los Angeles launch party. In his office that is still inside the Eagles’ NovaCare facility, former team president Joe Banner is having a good laugh. Jackson received his $47 million extension, in good measure, because Banner had his contract power usurped. Banner never would have done that deal.”

Ummm…I may be missing something, but where is the quote from Banner saying he is laughing? Where is Banner actually saying he wouldn’t have done the deal?

Its Bedard who is telling us that Banner is laughing and never would have done the deal. Again, no quotaions, no confirmation….not even an “unnamed source”

….once again an article based entirely on opinion. If Banner indeed said those things, give me a quote. If it is true..well..I’m still siding with Banner on this one……

Banner tried to hold on to the Shekels which tells us who really had control over the roster all them years. You control the purse, you control who stay or go.

If Banner was doing this for over a decade then Reid should be fired for allowing it to happen.

That Shekel hoarder robbed us of a key opportunity the year Trot and Barber deals were not done and Tampa Bay snuck in and snatched the prize while playing in or house.

I am sorry – but since Mr Cobb chasitsed us all recently – can someone explain to me how ‘Jessie Jackson Songs’ post here is not anti-semetic?

And songs – based on the fact you have called Tampa a better team as recently as yesturday – Gruden a better coach – how in the hell did Tampa ‘snatch’ one – you said they were better – and as I recall – the final score of that game was 27-10 and we scored all 10 points in the first qtr –

I know you don;t know shit about the eagles or eagle history – but Mithcell ran a KO back 70 yards – we punched it in and then the Tampa D destroyed the eagle O…. so unless Trotter or Barber were going to block, catch or run the ball – as usual you are full of shit – but note that Dawkins was in fact here for that game!

none the less – now I know why Jake calls you Rev – the Rev Jessie JAckson – and all your disparaging anti semetic remarks – of course – you analysis is wrong, your consluions are wrong and your hypthesis is wrong – but hell – your songs – you are always wrong – now your bigoted too

Bottom line is Joe Banner’s negotiation tactics and desire to determine someone’s fair market value would hurt the team because valuable players such as Westbrook and Trotter had to go through the ringer to get a deal that was not only fair market as a player on the field but also in the locker room, and how do you measure that. That’s what Banner’s blind spot was. Lurie finally saw it, that’s why hesaid hehad to do what was best for the team. Banner’s handling of the D Jax situation was detrimental on and off the field as well as the locke rroom because other players were most certainly watching that contract situation. If Banner was stil lin control of contracts I doubt if Shady McCoy would have gotten his extension because Joe could not work with Drew Rosenhaus which is why Lesean fired him . It was not Drew. It was Joe!!!

Oh no. Banner was the only front office guy in the league that guarded money carefully. The pats are paying Welker what he wants. The bears are catering to every whim or Matt Forte. Drew Brees gets whatever he wants contract wise. The giants spend big left and right. The Steelers shell out big bucks all the time. OH WAIT, THAT’S ALL UNTRUE…. so Song’s point is…. what, bullshit? Songs – stop acting like a three year old and trying to make shit up – Banner’s job was to get the best value for the team – he wanted to get the most talent, for the least amount of money.. happens in every sport (see that Billy Bean baseball movie this year..) for an immature anti-semetic idiot to theorize, based on ‘shekel hoarding’ that the eagles didn;t win a Sb is pure bullshit..

so perhaps Joe had an abrasive style – that did not stop the offense in the TB NFCC game – that did not blow out Buckholder’s knee in the STL NFCC game, nor did it make the offense play like crap against Carolina… all of that is pure BS.. It also did not stop the patriots from the big second half they had (and Trotter was on the field for that! – along with Dawkins) – perhaps Joe didn;t get along with agents – he payed Vick 100 mill and we set the team turnover record!! Kelce was making a rookie 6th round draft picks pay and had a great season – Hayensworth got a huge contract and promptly did NOTHING.. westbrooke got an extension, had a huge season got another one, and then poof – injured…. LeSean McCoy takes over..

They are dollars Songs – that is what pro NFL players are paid in Dollars, not yen, euros, shekels, pounds, rials, bullion, or anything else – dollars..

and there are COUNTLESS examples of teams that FREELY spend their money that get ZERO return (Dan Snyder would NEVER be called a dollar hoarder now would he)

EHL – only one major glaring whole to your theory – probably the most successful franchise in the last 15 years – the patirots – are notorious for treating any and all like du-du during contract negotiations.. Samule came to the birds becuase he agreed to play 1 year under the tag if they agreed not to tag him again – ask Wes Welker if he felt the PAts jumped all over ‘valuing him in the locker room’

too many people make too many generilizations that are not supportable b the facts of by history.. we have seen MANY press conferences with happy eagles.. we just tend, becuase of the bitterness at not yet winning a SB, tend to remember only the negative things..

waiting for the first person to twist that into ‘apologizing’

Key’s to Eagle Offense in 2012

#1) The Play of LT Demtress Bell
#2) The Play of WR jeremy Maclin (who I believe has a break-out season)
#3) The Play or TE Brett Celek, who had a great bounce back season last year, hopefully LT Bell playes well enough to Celek can remain running routes and m,aking plays down the field
#4) The Play of a Big WR (is it Riley Cooper or Marvin McNutt) who can give the Eagles a legitimate Big Target on the outside once inside the Red-Zone
#5) and of course, the play of QB Vick who doesn’t have to be Superman, just play smart, protect the ball and protect himself and get the ball to your playmakers..

Key’s to the Eagle Defense in 2012

#1) The Play of DT Antonio Dixon who by all reports is in fantastic shape, has lost some weight and could be a real force in Washburn’s Scheme.. Some great play by Dixon will allow C Jenkins, F Cox more room to operate as well as moving up and down the D/L to create confusion and havoc for opposing OL
#2) The Play of MLB D Ryans who has had a great introduction and start with the Eagles, His leadership, toughness and football smarts should help the other young LB’s immensely
#3) The Play of CB D Rodgers-Cromartie, who has every incentive to have a great season.. He is in a contract year at one of the premeir positoins in the NFL (CB) who can become highly paid if he performs at a high-level.. He has the Starters Job on the outside and will team up with Asmo and will play a more man-press style which suits his skills much better that playing in the slot must of the time last year when Samuel was an Eagle..
#4) The Play of Safety Nate Allen who I believe will have a great season and be considered strong as an All-Pro. It’s his 3rd Season, He’s Healthty and in great shape.. I stated last year that he was only about 80% at the beginning of the Season and probably should have been on the PUP list to start last Season, but the Eagles were in need of bodies to play Safety that he was probably rushed back too soon while not heathly and then lost some confidence.. He rebounded with a strong 2nd half of the 2011 as he got his legs 100% back below him.. I expect a great season for him in 2012

The above quote cleary and definitively demonstrates that you utterly lack an understanding of the difference between man/press coverage and Asante Samuel conerback play. Despite your lack of understanding, there is a huge significant difference. And tackling a guy who is waiting for a pass to be thrown to him on a bubble screen is illegal.

IYeah Schill – you would think – after a man who constantly gets on here and acts like he has a freakin clue what he is talking about and on top of that wants others to agree with his points of view – would have a clue – but.. I present the Rev Jessie ‘the anti-semite’ Jackson Songs –

I am willing to bet Songs doesn;t even know what the real meaning of the term bubble screen is… as usual he is trying to ‘sound’ like he has a clue – because clearly – as any person of REAL football intelligence would be able to tell songs – the two most imprtant keys to stopping a real – not made up in Songs mind – bubble screen – is the Defensive end getting upfield into the passing lane (wow – not the CB) and how fast the OLB on that side gets out to make the play –

see in a ‘real’ not songs imagined – bubble screen – the WR takes one step upfield, and then running back inside towards the QB – while at the same time, the extra rcvrs/TE and OL release to try and come out and creat a seam…

so DUMB ASS – the key ‘tacklers’ verse a bubble screen – are the linebackers!

but I digress – running a bubble screen against DCR – if he is playing press man as expected (the same with Asmo) would mean the WR would take one step – to whihc he would be gettng jammed – and then releasing towards the QB – with DCR – who is as fast as DJAX – stepping with him – in other words, the bubble screen is not really a play designed to beat press coverage.. or verse a CB standing in your face..

see Songs – what you did you absolutely ignorant turd, is you took a play that was VERY effective against your ‘buddy’ Asante, you read the words of people that have a clue, then you tried to copy and plagarize them – clearly demonstrating you have absolutley ZERO understanding of 1) what type of defense the eagles will play – as a Wide 9 with the DEs getting up the field puts the DE direclty in the passing lane (don;t you hate when that happens – plus the dude is alreay OUTSIDE the OT… 2) That the most important ‘tackler’ on a bubble screen is #1 the OLB and #2 the MLB (a bubble is designed to gain 5 yards.. and hope it breaks, the OLB wants to hold it to 2 to 3 yards..

and 3) the difference in styles between a CB that sits off and tries to read the QB and react to the CB (Asante) verse CBs that want to disrupt and intefere with the WRs forcing the QB to hold the ball..

but then again – what else would anyone expect other then you being a clueless shit!

D – where’s the confirmation you got? That OJ texted back? i saw that, but there’s little else at this point. I’m optimisitc and would like it – he’d bring potential updside – little if any downside – worst case he sucks, or is busted, but costs us very little when money isn’t an issue for us. He’s not going to make it hard to sign Maclin or any other young guy we need to keep. Best case is he helps out at safety. We don’t need him to start and play all the time. Just to help out.
