Report: Banner Didn’t Say He Wouldn’t Have Done Jackson Deal

Philadelphia Inquirer Eagles beat reporter Jeff McLane tweeted a message yesterday involving former Eagles President Joe Banner.  It was in response to an article written by Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe concerning Banner’s opinion of the contract the Eagles agreed to with DeSean Jackson.

Bedard made some statements about what Banner thought of the Jackson agreement.

Here’s the message which McLane communicated.

“Joe Banner did not tell the Boston Globe that he wouldn’t have done the DeSean Jackson deal. @GregABedard, as he restated, was simply giving his own opinion. By the way, Banner would have done that team-friendly deal and advised Howie Roseman in the negotiations. Banner had issue, however, with Jackson’s original asking price last summer and with paying a player, with obvious risks, who should have had motivation to play in the last year of his contract”.

Notice the end of the statement.  Banner had issue “with paying a player, with obvious risks, who should have had motivation to play in the last year of his contract”.   This comment comes right after saying he would have done the deal.

So which is it?

Don’t forget…technically he still works for the team as an “advisor”…still has his office at NovaCare….still getting $$ and benefits from the Eagles…..he will keep his official statements much more simple in the future…..you won’t get a really honest answer from Banner until he is actually with another team.

I am “Bannered Out” and to what does any of this matter now moving forward… Banner is gone, Coach AR has what he has wanted for a few years now, which is no interference from Banner and the Front Office about putting a roster together and re-signing what he believes are the core players to help them win a Super Bowl…
Let’s focus on the 2012 Team, the Players and Coaches who are going to make it happen.. Let’s Go Birds..

Reid has stated that he is planning to have a very physical training camp this year as opposed to what has happened over the last few years. I guess he is getting away from his theory of keeping guys fresh for the long season.

More contact is great for helping the team get off to a strong start in September, as long as we don’t have a greater number of injuries also.

If I see 1 more freaking article on here, about Banner, or how changed & improved Vick is, I’m going to rip out my eyes. God, I can’t wait for camp, Phillies, Flyers & Sixers transactions, because I can’t stand it anymore. NO ONE GIVES A CRAP ABOUT BANNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Garry – clearly people don’t care about this nearly as much as you do.

But to your question of “so which is it” – well, you’re oversimplifying it. Banner/the media members that are putting words in his mouth – didn’t state a contradiction. In one case it’s whether Banner would have done the deal that Howie did – when Howie did it. That’s a different thing than would Banner have given Desean the money Desean (and Rosenhaus) were asking for at the beginning of last season. So different timing, different $ amounts, different GMs, different Desean production/level of play contexts. It’s NOT as simple as you’re trying to make it out ot be Garry. The franchise tag, being finnished with his deal v. having time left on it… also huge parts of this. Come on man, give it up. Clearly you have a major vandetta against Banner, and/or Lurie, and/or Reid – not a shocker since you’re a former player, connected with the team, and close to more recent former players. But seriously man, give it up.

double talk
n.
1. Meaningless speech that consists of nonsense syllables mixed with intelligible words; gibberish.
2. Deliberately ambiguous or evasive language. Also called doublespeak.

G,

This is garbage news. It doesn’t matter. Are we going to get reports every time Banner farts?

Here’s a suggestion. Why don’t you use your past football experience and write a thorough column on why the linebackers will be better this year? Tell us about why Demeco Ryans will sure up the middle and why the rookie will help with Tight Ends like Carlos Emmons did?

Give us something of substance instead of chasing ghost stories and reporting what others have already reported.

bsm – please elaborate. What are you saying? That we don’t actually know what Banner would have done if he had full power for the Desean deal? That there’s really nothing to look at here?

What do you mean by soley posting the definition of double talk?

Oh, I get it. You mean to support Garry’s suspision that Banner would have done the deal because Banner stated something that would have been a ‘con’ in the ‘pro’ ‘con’ excerise of deciding whether to sign Djax.

So basically you’re saying you aggree with the ASSUMPTION that you know what Banner would have done….ok….so….what?

Hi Schill

The point is, this particular story doesn’t matter. Knowing one way or the other won’t change the outcome of any games played this year.

I think as fans, at least I, like to hear more about the details of the players, techniques, etc. to get a better understanding of the game. Tell me why a certain player is be better or worse. Use of hands, head gestures, knees bent, etc. This is what I expect from G as he has the actual past experience. He’s not just some football junkie wannabe. He’s been there, done that. Use experience to explain to us what is happening, what goes on in the locker room, meetings, etc.

G, I mean no personal disrespect, but give us what we really want.

Eric – oh, believe me – I agree wholeheartedly. But G doesn’t seem to be into doing this site for the reasons you and I want him to be. It gives him some side money, extra notoriety, and a way to extend his brand. He’s rarely invested in providing original content and frequently, if not most often, reposting other stories with a negative media slant.

Schill…this article corrected an earlier article that G had written….if he hadn’t written it I am sure that there would be whiners on here pointing out that the statement had been corrected. My suggestion..get your information from others sites and provide your comments and discussion here…..there are a diverse group of fans on the site, that is what makes it a good fan site, not the limited offerings of articles or breaking news….take it for what it is IMO.

greenfan – good points. I do follow that suggestion…

And I agree about what would have happened if G hand’t posted this one too – however, the way he ended it showed that he’s sticking to his guns – the banner hater/conspiracy theory take on things…

I got an even better suggestion. If you don’t find the article by the site’s owner(or anyone for that matter) newsworthy, important, etc..etc.., don’t read it. Even better, Don’t respond bitching and complaining about the “unimportant story” Maybe others do care since Banner did have an important role within the org.

Schiller you are so funny.

If somebody does not say what you want, you’ll fill in the gaps, to support your position.

Ever since G Cobb went upside your head, you’ve been a very bitter man.

Let it go. It’s just a football blog. Take a trip to Syria…That should help your focuse.

Now. What I meant by putting the definition up, was that Banner was giving a classical political double talk. He said what he meant, now he has to clean it up. Sorta like the “I miss spoke” line politians use. Instead of just saying “I lied”.

PS – the Eagles signed a Safety from the Redskins…

bsm – but that’s the thing he DIDN’T say what he meant. The orriginal report was an opinion by a reporter and NOT a Banner statement at all. Nothing gets into that thick skull of yours does it?

A reporter said what HE thought Banner meant, wrote about it, and now Banner has to clean THAT up. Got it?

I could care less about what Banner said or says. He is essentially gone from the Eagles spokesman role. It’s all I can take to see him in that dorky kindergarten

I didn’t just bitch and complain, I made a suggestion to G on how to improve his site. This is an open forum and we are free to congratulate good stories and ridicule bad ones. This is what makes us fans, fans. I can appreciate G’s honesty and he is free to criticize the Eagles for lousy moves and he does.

Are we always supposed to be nice even when the content stinks? Without honest feedback, one would keep doing what they do not knowing if it’s good or bad. Heck, if I told G this was a good story I’d really be lying to him and saying it stunk when his back was turned. Are we not free to criticize G when he makes lousy moves?

And songs I heard you walked around with your ass clenched so tight if we shoved a lump of coal up there it would turn into a diamond!

Look at those blatant anti semitic comments – why do you have to make reference to the Jewish states monetary unit to help your point – are only people that use shekels cheap – you need help – I thought you were going to use Pesos, or Yen, or wait – Dollars – what we actually use here in the states –

EricT my statement wasn’t directed at you in particular, But far too many on this site are too selective with their bitching. Since WE ALL are being so honest, I just thought I’d throw my hat into the ring. There are plenty of articles/threads I find boring and not interesting. I simply either ignore them. Some on here are not offering honest critique, but simply bitching and contrary for the sake of being contrary. I don’t want this site to devolve into the other site that’s become plain pathetic.

hi Cold,

I totally understand. I read most if not all of G’s stories that he posts. This one just struck a nerve as it seemed he wanted to get to the bottom of something that really doesn’t matter in the short term. If over the next 3-5 years we see the Birds falling apart due to poor cap management, then this is a bigger story and we can all play the “I told you so” game. Until then, whether Banner is here or not will not change the W/L column.

I just want to see more stories about the real side of football, the side we never get to see but that G has and does. Is that too much to ask?
