Cowboys Using Hybrid Draw Play To Attack Birds

Jones running for yardage against the birds The Eagles defensive front has been having a great deal of trouble with the Cowboys draw play which is really an abbreviated draw play. the runner is able to hit the hole quicker.

They run it against the Eagles as a way of taking advantage of the size edge their offensive line has over the Birds defensive line.   They try to get the Eagles to take a side on their pass rush and this opens natural running lanes for the backs.

Tony Romo doesn’t drop deep in the pocket on these runs like most draw plays, he only takes a three- step drop which is normally used on short throws like slant routes and quick outs.¬† Normally draw plays are five or seven step drops.

Romo takes the snap and drops from center like he’s getting ready to get rid of the ball on a quick throw, then hands the ball to the running back who is set up close to the line.

ON these plays, the defensive linemen will normally take a side on the pass rush and that will open up natural running lanes for the Cowboys backs.

The running backs use the method made popular by Vince Lombardi, they run to daylight.

Running to daylight means the back goes wherever the opening occurs.¬† There’s no hole that is designated for him to run to because the offensive linemen take the defenders whereever they want to go and the back reacts to it.

The run is one of the anchors of the Dallas offense.
